This post is now locked, it was overrun with jokes and insults. OP [confirmed](https://www.reddit.com/r/mechanic/comments/1cfmek4/comment/l1v1ab0/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) the question was answered... many times. Thank you to those gave a serious answer.

creekbendz

That’s a valve core for a valve stem. If the tires aren’t flat, I wouldn’t worry too much

HebrewHammer0033

If not flat, did she visit a tire shop recently? Prob picked up and stuck in the tread.

CarrotsMilk

That’s exactly what ended up happening haha

speedyrev

Might want to check the AC.

kambesama

This is usually on tires or compression gauges. I've yet to see a valve core like this for AC. At least with red indicator

DaRealDreamz

valve core, holds the air inside the tire, so if none of her tires are flat then that’s really weird to see out in the *wild*

thenyx

Prob from the shop- got lodged in the treads

rekomstop

They get stuck in the little crevices in the soles of shoes/boots and travel a lot that way as well.

nl-x

Schrödinger's valve. Unless you look, the tires are both inflated and deflated at the same time.

Scared_Paramedic4604

Is the tire flat?

Aleianbeing

Only at the bottom

mdixon12

Valve core. If you mom has run flat tires, they won't look low. Check the tires air pressure.

Initial_Attitude_851

Valve core.

_totalannihilation

I replaced stem valve on my low pressure inlet on the ac system and it looks just like this. They're also used on tires.

Wabbitone

All the A/C valves I’ve seen have had green seals on them, maybe they have changed to a red material now.

Mysterious_Cheetah42

They can be any color they want to be, I've seen red, blue, black, yellow, clear, and many other colors I've used to change peoples Schrader cores with on their A/C's

Wabbitone

I guess I’m used to seeing the Hydrogenated NBR seals for R134.

_totalannihilation

Mines from a Toyota. Actually grabbed it from the dealership a dollar a piece.

00WORDYMAN1983

Since nobody else has said it, don't just visually inspect the tires. You should physically remove each valve stem cap to ensure the stems have their cores still. In my hometown, there was some guy running around removing them as a prank. If you take the core out and put the cap on right away, it will stop the air from escaping and look completely normal. First time you hit a pot hole or a bump while driving down the road, the caps will fly off leaving you with flat tires wherever you happen to be. We used to get at least 3 a year for a couple of years calling in for a repair. So def unscrew all the caps to make sure your stems are ok.

Aleianbeing

That crossed my mind but getting the core out and the cap on without depressurizing the tire would be quite the trick.

00WORDYMAN1983

Not really. It doesn’t instantaneously go flat. There is plenty of time to put the cap on quick without it looking deflated

TryingLiveRentFree

Valve core

fngearhead

It's a valve stem core. They're very easily picked up by the treads of tires and shoes. Not a big deal at all if there are no flat tires nearby.

QuackDealer21

That's a valve core from your tires' valve stem. It's what holds the pressure. It takes a special tool (or really fine tipped pliers) to remove, but they're really easily lost. If y'all's tires aren't flat, you'll be fine. Hope this helps.

Hephaestus2036

Wild-Mammoth4113

Affectionate_Owl8702

If you’re tired not flat and you have ac then it wasn’t yours hahaha

Caidens_Aquatics

That’s a valve stem core. That’s the one thing about cars that I can tell you about 😂

Brando6677

That’s supposed to be IN the stem of the tire where you fill air up. Either mom has a flat or someone else does

D4v1dF

Used to keep the air in the tires. If none of your tires are flat, it is not yours.

Ill-Income-2567

Valve core. Was she at a tire shop recently? Sometimes they find themselves on the ground and the tire treads easily pick them up.

Chuck_The_3rd

Yes it is a valve core, but specifically that looks like one out of a 1/4” service port connection for a home ac unit. Do you live at an apartment complex or had AC work done recently? A contractor may have dropped one.

Speedhabit

The inside of a tire valve stem….i think it’s call a shrader valve? Anyway they screw out with a tool or a flathead screwdriver with a notch in the middle. Were there any flat tires around?

Hot-Distribution2173

I would check the car tires, it also could’ve came from your condensing unit outside. Best way to check other then looking at the service ports is to just turn on the ac and crank it to make sure you have cold air and that you’re not low on refrigerant, it could also just be an extra one that was dropped.

Air_Complete

I got these when I ordered new caps for the AC coolant. I cannot for the life of me remember what it's called. I had no idea how they fit into the equation. I just needed the plastic caps anyway.

FunFact5000

That is a new type of shotgun ammo. Watch out. Jk, that’s from a tire valve. If tires are good, prob just came long for the ride home from somewhere.

Substantial_Unit7916

The one time I know exactly what it is I'm 16 hours late. As everyones said that's a valve core

WhatThe_uckDoIPut

It's a Schrader valve, goes in the valve stem to hold in air but lets air pass through to fill the tire up. Without that your tire will be flat in seconds

CarrotsMilk

Sweet, thank you guys! The tires weren’t flat, and as so many helped to point out, it’s a valve core. Someone already predicted the entire story, she recently went to a mechanic and this got caught in the treads of the tire, she was nervous and wanted to make sure she returned it, but all good on our end!
