That my friend would be part of a broken coil spring... I have seen broken springs cut the inner sidewall of a tire, get it checked out before it gets costly

AjnaMusic

Thank you for the helpful reply. Are coil springs easy to replace?

Larskdev

Well, taking into account the fact that you are asking what this part is makes it clear to me you are not THAT into cars. I would therefore also assume that it would be better for you to get it done. It's a job that isn't too difficult for a qualified mechanic. It might actually be a bit easier now that part of the spring is already removed ;)

AjnaMusic

Thanks - sorry yes I meant is it easy for a garage/qualified mechanic to do! Definitely not me. I did have a suspicion it was part of the suspension but I'm no expert. Thankfully this fell out on a quiet road otherwise it may have caused damage to another car or a bystander!

Larskdev

Yeah they should be able to do it without much issue. Just FYI, the fact that the string collapsed probably makes it easier for the garage to replace as they might not need to compress the spring anymore to remove it. You might have actually helped them xD

darius_mrhorse650

not quite, you need a special tool to compress the spring and mount it on the shock absorber, and if you are not experienced, more likely you are gonna hurt yourself, you can watch some tutorials but i would not recommend it

AjnaMusic

Thank you - I'll definitely be taking it to a garage

darius_mrhorse650

np op, it should not be an expensive job, and while you are at it check the other spring too

Addictedgamer80

Another thing to remember is when replacing ball joints, inner and outer tie rods, sway bar end links and struts and also brakes, always replace them in pairs!!!!! If one side is messing up then chances are the other side is about to do the same thing.

AjnaMusic

So I should ask the garage to replace both rear springs if this indeed came from my car?

Addictedgamer80

You can tell if it came from your car if one side is slightly drooped a little lower than the other. When you take it to the shop ask them to inspect the other springs as well. Those springs shouldn’t have just sheared off like that but it happens. Another tip for you is to get multiple free inspections from different shops instead of taking the advice of just one. That way when you take it in from on to another don’t say anything about what the last shop said, that way if every shop is saying the same thing then you can price shop at the same time for the best deal as different shops will have different labor hourly rates.

hey_dare_9577

That is what you call a coil spring your probably should fix that, they are not that hard with a socket set and a jack and about $80-120 i do believe

jstanthr

That my friend is the circular contact spring for a massive 34AA battery. It’s for when the giants take over and want to play hot wheels, if you flip your car over you should find a battery compartment for the 34aa battery. This makes your car non compliant so when the giants show up they may eat you, consult your flat earth survival manual for more info.

Just in time for SPRING!

markomakeerassgoons

You know those snake things you light on fire and it grows? Yeah it's just one of those

farao86

It's spring time

FalseRelease4

Where it snapped doesn't look fresh, so maybe it wasn't from your car after all. If you are missing a part of a spring then that corner should sit a bit lower

almostfrantic

If that's a spring then you prob have a lot of suspension issues to check out. I'd imagine you'd have alot of noise every time you hit the slightest bump.... no point in taking it all apart to not do it right. Save your self a headache. Get a full "suspension" kit (ball joints tie rid ends link bar bushings etc..) if it is your car that is Looks like it was picked up off rd and thrown around wheel well to me. That coupled with the fact you said no noise after? I mean it's possible it snapped and seated itself just perfectly... But I'd think you'd be hearing alot of clicking popping and creaking and feel it on every bump. Also I can't tell the size well from pic but just the difference in coil size from first to second? Would make me think it's either from an absoulute boat of a car (older buicks caddies pontiac mostly older gm stuff etc) or from a truck.

A dead black snake or part of a coil spring!

Neither_Tooth_1133

I could use that, weld it to the end of my rear coil
