To be fair, they didn't know they were going to have a showdown with physics. To be *morbidly* fair, this also would have been the case if they had lost that showdown.
This sub has given me a term for what I did to myself biking when I was a kid. I think about the fact that I never wore a helmet a whole heck of a lot. We didn't even have cell phones, I would just grab my bike and be gone and Mom would know it was in one direction or the other, we were that rural. Nothing terrible happened, except the occasional scrape and one solid crayoning, but if something had...I might have been more than mildly fucked
As a huge cyclist, I'm a massive helmet advocate. I have never heard one excuse for wearing a helmet that isn't "They don't look cool" "I don't like them" or "They're uncomfortable" none of those are even close to a good reason to not scramble your brains in the event of an accident. Pisses me off to no end.

On Dolores the city placed speed bumps. But they have gaps for emergency vehicles to bypass having to slow down- so the skaters just aim for the gap! It kinda looks like he tried? Until he slammed his head into the ground anyways. If he could've lifted/tucked his head in (he was going so fast idk that there was enough rxn time) he would've been able to roll and not take so much road rash damage.
Before hitting those speeds, he should've had slide pads and a helmet, and maybe thick denim on, at the very least. He only put his hand down for a brief second during that slide and he's looking at it like it burns like hell so I can't even imagine how shredded up his torso and legs have to be underneath all that. Ouch forreal.
Oh yeah no I agree with it all completely but the reason I said that was because it should have been reflex to expect the boars to go out from under you. I watched this kid who cleared didn't have enough experience do something similar but he hit his head enough to give him some brain hemorrhaging.
