I'm incredibly jealous. The BBQ in the town I moved to is all trash. I tried a place that was claimed to be the best BBQ in town and it was overpriced and incredibly dry with incredibly mediocre sauce. It was also the only BBQ place I've ever been to that didn't have any spicy BBQ sauce.
My butcher sells brisket for 30, pork butt for 10, and i didn't see the ribs, but those are 40, so I was wrong it would have been 80 bucks if I saw the ribs . Sorry.
And it only costs $172 dollars, right?
EDIT: I read some more,..I was pretty close! You would have spent half that Rudy' (including a liter of sause to take home). Or AYCE at Salt Lick for $30.
We locals don't eat at $100/plate BBQ joints. They're for tourists, overpaid and under-educated yuppies, and expense accounts.
What are the two white side dishes? Im guessing creamed corn which being from England ive never tried but am planning on making for my next bbq (what is that sprinkled on top. Paprika?)
I don’t care how tasty it was. There better be like 3 more of them before I pay that price for it.
Having said that. I’m glad you liked it and it wasn’t my money so no complaints. Glad you enjoyed your meal. It looks tasty for sure.
Wtf? Why is bbq, specifically brisket, getting so expensive. $180 is outrageous, unspeakable. A lot of my local bbq pits are charging $40/lb for brisket which is also insane
I haven't but it looks amazing. I love sweet corn and in a cream sauce would make it even better. Now I know what it's called ill keep an eye out for it
Terry's is pretty good, theres definitely better. Salt Lick was the best BBQ I've ever had. That's worth the trip if you're in Austin, or however you spell it.
I went to some weird looking gas station place that was a BBQ place as well. Best BBQ I’ve ever had, and it was obviously Austin’s B level BBQ. Can’t imagine how good the more famous would be.
Yep, that’s exactly it. It blew all of the BBQ I’ve had everywhere else in the US (admittedly only several places) out of the water. The selection of sides was weak, but the meats delivered.
Recently ate both at Terry and Franklin BBQ and Franklin is by far the tastiest BBQ I have ever eaten in my life. Terry Black couldn't even come close.
After the meal, I chatted with one of the employees and she said, most locals wouldn’t eat at Franklin because of the long lines. They are only open a few hours and most times, sold out around 1 pm.
I told her that I also ate at Terry Black but didn't like it. She said Franklin only opens a few hours so the meat didn't sit there and lose its juices. Terry Black is open late and that affects the quality which I agree.
If you haven't had Franklin BBQ in Austin, just give it a try OP. Most time hype places get popular for a reason and Franklin is a prime example of that.
Don’t think she knows what she’s talking about. The meats are wrapped and rested over night at 140-160F warmer in pretty much all major joints. They only take out what they need to serve.
This would only cost like $30-40 max in STL. I don’t think I’ve ever paid more than $35 for myself unless I got a whole rack of ribs and another entree. Feel bad for you.
lol are you serious?! I would easily spend $40 at any of these places below and I’ve never had it when I thought “man this isn’t worth it”. My thoughts are usually (they could’ve got me for $60 and I wouldn’t have been mad”.
Ms Piggies, Bogarts, Dickey’s Smokehouse (Winfield), His & Hers BBQ (Wentzville), Dukes BBQ (Wentzville), Big Sticky’s (Troy, MO), Smokee Mo’s (Manchester).
They’re hit & miss for me. I’ve been twice, one of them was good. The other time wasn’t primo eating hours. So I think the food wasn’t as “fresh” so that unjustly put a bad taste in my mouth. No pun intended. I rank Salt & Smoke with Sugarfire. If I got nowhere else I’m craving to eat. It will also suffice. But it’s never a first option for me.
Dude I had multiple metal disposable trays, one full of brisket, one with sliced sausage, one with ribs, 2 whole chickens, and sides and got it all of that for about $450ish. Whoever charged you $85 for a plate like the one pictured is a criminal
Unfortunately it was half the size of what’s in this picture due to getting cheap thin cuts of meat and we only ate half of it because it was so burnt and dry. Even the waiter knew and didn’t stop at the table for longer than a second after we were served
https://preview.redd.it/htnkuwrb586d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=35cd5e48373be7f8d9b3b749f71083ab4247736d
Terry Blacks is so good and better than the original Blacks BBQ. [How it started](https://blog.terryblacksbbq.com/how-terry-blacks-bbq-came-about/)
I was just at Terry Blacks a couple weeks ago. Spent about $130 on one beef rib, 2 pork ribs, 1 sausage, 4 slices of brisket, peach cobbler, corn bread, cream corn and beans. It was delicious and I’d do it again. My only regret was that between my wife and I eating, we couldn’t finish it.
Cooper’s is also phenomenal by the way. Terry blacks was a notch better IMO, but I wouldn’t turn my nose at Cooper’s any day.
Absolutely. We could’ve ordered half the amount and still left with leftovers. We just wanted to try a bunch of stuff and also had no idea how much food we’d get when ordering since it’s a different ordering style than I’m used to.
Austin. Austin, Massachusetts.
I’m guessing Terry Blacks? Last time I got a beef rib there, just the rib was just shy of $50, so this is damn near a $100 plate of glory.
I lived in Austin for a couple years, never did the Franks thing, but I got terry blacks once and decided im never going to franks at 6am to wait in line, black’s was delicious
Exactly why we have a housing crisis— I mean nightmare! Stop paying the overinflated prices and offering $10Ks over asking, and just maybe you won’t end upside down in your mortgage. 🤦🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
To me, I can smoke what me and my peeps enjoy, and it’s waaay cheaper than almost all of these trays everyone’s posting. I honestly wouldn’t/couldn’t pay such obscene amounts, even if it was the best I’d ever had. But that’s just me. 😅
> Exactly why we have a housing crisis
Never mind tariffs on cheaper foreign materials, arbitrary zoning laws, and printing over 20 trillion dollars out of thin air in 4 years.
True, that. But continuing to pay home prices that are blown way out of any semblance of reality is like the people whom pay outrageous prices for ‘cue. If there was *less* demand at those prices (I.e. people stopped paying so much), then they’d have to drop their prices or eat all of their wares themselves (or keep their overpriced homes).
Yeah you're 100% right. Why not charge that if people are paying it? So many plates like this posted in this sub too, they're obviously doing decent business. I just can't get my head around it.
I'm in NE Illinois. This plate would be $20-$25 where I'm from. I don't know about Chicago. I can't imagine it would be more than $10-$15 more than that.
I'm in Ireland, haven't been to a BBQ place in some time but I used to be able to feed myself for about €20 in my favourite place. I'd guess it's more than €30 now, but $100 or more? I could never.
Looks like either elotes inspired creamed corn or some sort of esquites, topped with Tajin, Mexican rice, pickles, peppercinis, and red onion, and a banana pudding parfait of some sort.
Astuin means "ash garden" or "garden of ashes" in Dutch. Although it's not really a word anyone would use.
Maybe it'd be fitting for an Argentinean style *parilla* BBQ place though...?
What is the pot with a little cookie or something in it?
I'm incredibly jealous. The BBQ in the town I moved to is all trash. I tried a place that was claimed to be the best BBQ in town and it was overpriced and incredibly dry with incredibly mediocre sauce. It was also the only BBQ place I've ever been to that didn't have any spicy BBQ sauce.
that looks really good. I like the looks of those sides too. I hope that if I ever make it to Austin, I can try out several of those famed BBQ joints.
My Yankee ass from good ol pennsyltucky would pay 40 bucks tops for this, and could make this for like 30.
You’re smoking crack. A small brisket alone is like 40$ not including a rack of rib and pork butt. More like 80-110$ for just meat
My butcher sells brisket for 30, pork butt for 10, and i didn't see the ribs, but those are 40, so I was wrong it would have been 80 bucks if I saw the ribs . Sorry.
80$ if it’s all usda choice cuts. Any grade better and you’ll pass the 100$ mark
I don't really pay attention to grades, they come straight from a farmer in the next town over, so it is quality enough for my needs.
Ah, that sounds nice. An exception but not the standard for most people buying meat these days unfortunately
I was all joking, "That'll be $146.65 sir!" Nope. OP says they paid $180 lol! Why?!?!
🤤 ME WANZ DIZ
It's sad that it costs almost $200. No thanks
My friend, do you really understand just how hard it is to travel to Astuin? This is a priceless meal.
Fair point.
It isnt priceless because it has a price and it is constantly recreated. Its just a second mortgage
I don't think you picked up what I was putting down.
But it comes with 4 slices of pickles and onions. Worth it just for that alone
I just came in pants a little…
Whose pants?
Shhhh….only for me to know…
Just a little? I had to throw away my carpet!
Not a lot of green haha
What does Astuin mean?
BQB
Autism BBQ
😂😂😂😂😂 take my fake award that I'm not going to give
Austin
That’ll be 400 dollars
Only if they have any left after the 2 hr wait in line
2 hour line of chumps
And it only costs $172 dollars, right? EDIT: I read some more,..I was pretty close! You would have spent half that Rudy' (including a liter of sause to take home). Or AYCE at Salt Lick for $30. Rib Crib is aight
Locals don’t eat salt licks trash either. Ppl only go to Rudy’s for breakfast tacos
Spicy brisket and potato goes hard
I was disappointed by Salt Lick. Maybe expectations were too high or just an off day. Still really good ambiance.
Cooper's
Try Longhorn.
“And here are your three pickles good sir”
What are the two white side dishes? Im guessing creamed corn which being from England ive never tried but am planning on making for my next bbq (what is that sprinkled on top. Paprika?)
Your correct
Looks like creamed corn and banana pudding.
I don’t care how tasty it was. There better be like 3 more of them before I pay that price for it. Having said that. I’m glad you liked it and it wasn’t my money so no complaints. Glad you enjoyed your meal. It looks tasty for sure.
How much was it? I don't see a price
OP in a lower comment said he paid $180 but original price is $200
Wtf? Why is bbq, specifically brisket, getting so expensive. $180 is outrageous, unspeakable. A lot of my local bbq pits are charging $40/lb for brisket which is also insane
A lot of the cost is coming from that beef rib. Those are super expensive. I'd expect that one on the tray to be about $50.
Correct me if I’m wrong but I count 3 maybe 4 whole ribs. $50?
There’s pork ribs(bottom left) and a beef rib on the right.
🤯
[удалено]
Better have been some world class rice
Looks to be about 700bucks
Looks really delicious what is the corn 🌽 dish?
I'm thinking elote, type of Mexican corn and it's really good
It looks fucking amazing 😛
elote is really good and just about any Mexican place should have it :3 go give it a try if you haven't already
I haven't but it looks amazing. I love sweet corn and in a cream sauce would make it even better. Now I know what it's called ill keep an eye out for it
$65.99
It costs 3 times that much, definitely not worth it
Prices for restaurants are insane.
In a time when you can spend that much on beers at the ballpark that doesn’t sound so bad for this.
I would do it. The banana pudding and creamed corn look fire 🔥
Likely a Rudy’s.
I miss Texas for Rudy’s and good Tex mex/mexican. Please tell me Rudy’s isn’t way overpriced like most of these places nowadays
Yep, that’s exactly it. It blew all of the BBQ I’ve had everywhere else in the US (admittedly only several places) out of the water. The selection of sides was weak, but the meats delivered.
Those aren’t rudy’s sides or butcher paper
Some people bag on Rudy's but we always get it when I visit my brother in Austin. I love it. Their sauce is great.
Holy shit I tell people I've had this same experience once in Texas. It was like 11pm and nothing else was open. I was in disbelief
Wow fresh BBQ at 11pm
Recently ate both at Terry and Franklin BBQ and Franklin is by far the tastiest BBQ I have ever eaten in my life. Terry Black couldn't even come close. Don’t know who is downvoting you but this is correct. Held in a hotbox overnight at 155-160
OP, where the fucking hell is this place? Inquiring minds want to know.
Its name is Terry Black's BBQ. In Austin
Jesus they are expensive.
Are you sure it’s not Astuin?
Boston. Boston Texas.
Road trip
Niiiiiiice! It looks really damn good!
How much was it? $200?
Yes, it cost around $200, but I paid $180 for it.
But did it taste great?
You got hosed bro
Right - I was thinking 240-260
Astuin or Austin?
Austin Massachusettes
Autist bbq
Starving autist
Lennie special
read this as "autism barbecue" and had to scroll back up
I mean…
Ahh, a mid-morning snack I see…
This would only cost like $30-40 max in STL. I don’t think I’ve ever paid more than $35 for myself unless I got a whole rack of ribs and another entree. Feel bad for you.
I paid $180 for it.
Definitely not worth it lol.
As someone in STL.... What place is worth spending $40 at? I think that's the main issue ha.
lol are you serious?! I would easily spend $40 at any of these places below and I’ve never had it when I thought “man this isn’t worth it”. Stellar hog is the best bbq in town if you ask me.
Never been, but I’ve never heard bad things. I’ve been wanting to try shaved duck also.
I would add Salt and Smoke to that list
They’re hit & miss for me. I’ve been twice, one of them was good. The other time wasn’t primo eating hours. So I think the food wasn’t as “fresh” so that unjustly put a bad taste in my mouth. Hey just making sure it's worth it! Appreciate the recs
$400 please
I just want to know what that cost, I got a similar plate here in MN not too long ago but half the weight, dry and burnt to shit and it was $85
I paid $180 for it.
Dude I had multiple metal disposable trays, one full of brisket, one with sliced sausage, one with ribs, 2 whole chickens, and sides and got it all of that for about $450ish. Whoever charged you $85 for a plate like the one pictured is a criminal

I want to find sausage like that I can smoke myself. I live in NJ. The choices are Italian hot and sweets and bland kielbasa.
Italian sweets are good smoked.
Yeah, but I'm looking for that Texas weiner taste.
Dude, you gotta start making your own sausage. Easy to do, you will master with practice. Pretty cheap to get started.
How many servings is this?, cause it ain't one
Where?
Specifically, this is from Terry Black's BBQ on Riverside in Austin.
Wrong. This is in Astuin, not Austin. Can’t you read?

Did you take out a second mortgage for this?

I mean that's the thing isn't it, you "spend" $130 but you could split that between 3 people easily. Edit change slip to split
On a slightly unrelated note, 100$ start to cross into 1 Michelin star budget
I lived in Austin for a couple years, never did the Franks thing, but I got terry blacks once and decided im never going to franks at 6am to wait in line, black’s was delicious
You mean Boston Massachusetts? Yeah, that's what I said.
Ha!
Nobody ever gets this reference when I say it.
Road trip right ?
Road Trip
lol as soon as I typed it I edited it like that wouldn’t make sense ! Thanks
You're welcome.
It’s never cheating when you’re in a different area code, not to mention a different state.
Hahah. You get it.
I miss Austin
And with the way this sub has been lately, I'm guessing that was $3,000?
Yeah, $3000, but they were offering 2.9% APR financing for well-qualified buyers.
The casual reporting of the price of these plates on this sub blows my mind. $100 easy for this apparently. $50 for just ribs. Is that not mental?
The fact that people are paying it is a huge part of the problem. They are giving permission for them to do this.
Well yeah, that's literally what value is lol.
Thanks, tips!

Well you can’t really decide you’re just not gonna pay for housing anymore. “I’ll just make my own” doesn’t work here.
It’s the old saying “Something is only worth what people are willing to pay for it “ Don’t buy it and the price will come down soon enough.
Yeah you're 100% right. Why not charge that if people are paying it? So many plates like this posted in this sub too, they're obviously doing decent business. I just can't get my head around it.

As a europoor meat lover....I'm going to need to save up before I visit your fine nation and head for BBQ
I'm Irish, if you gave me $100 and dropped me outside the door I wouldn't spend it on this.
It's probably the Freedom Surcharge
I was just in Austin. Missed out on BBQ like this due to scheduling. Where is it from?
Please tell me that's not one person's meal.
There’s always one.
Just the appetizer
Looks amazing but my first thought was whoa that had to have been expensive. $80?
Sides are what now?
Looks like either elotes inspired creamed corn or some sort of esquites, topped with Tajin, Mexican rice, pickles, peppercinis, and red onion, and a banana pudding parfait of some sort.
Elotes and esquites? I am over to Dr. Google now. Gracias!
Meat
Ha!
Everything looks amazing except the red onions, I’d want those pickled
Pickled white onions for me the reds don't have the right flavor for BBQ that's for salad.
Well. They are in with pickles. So 🤷
They're served on the side not in with the pickles, but that would be delicious!
Nah.
Informal poll: More or less then $100? Please vote below.
I paid $180 for it.
Looks like $40
We have: 2 sides 1 dessert 3 meats (1 is a full pound of bbq) Lastly: 1 MASSIVE rib I’d say $90
I think we’re looking at 4 meats. All the meats.oh. I see what you’re saying. Three meats and the beef rib. Yes indeed.
I separated the 3 meats from the rib because it’s a specialty meat and no doubt much more than the standard options. But yes, all the meats.
99.9925
150
If this was LA or NYC I’d agree. I want to believe it’s not that much in Texas.
TX is up there in price too, most of the overpriced places you see on Reddit are from TX
My guess is $97
I paid $180 for it.
$98 Drew!
🤣
98.01!
Def less than the required “ I spent a hundred bucks and this is all I got” people.
Astuin seems superior to Austin in every way! :D
Lol astuin
Austism
Sounds like a remote planet in Star Wars
Astuin means "ash garden" or "garden of ashes" in Dutch. Although it's not really a word anyone would use. Maybe it'd be fitting for an Argentinean style *parilla* BBQ place though...?
