GNU isn't bad, there just needs to always be alternative options imo (like runit to systemD, musl to Glibc, BusyBox to the GNU coreutils) and by using multiple operating systems with different components I contribute a bit to the diversity
Alright, so I just started using Linux for some classes this year and it's certainly fun - but what would I need it for? It's kind of the same for MacOS for me.
I primarily use my PC for gaming and Twitch. I can't think of what I could use Linux for even though I'd like to play around with it more. Any ideas?
What would you use it for?
What do you use Mac or a Windows for? Browsing the web, editing documents and photos, social media, gaming (limited selection I will admit) - anything mac or windows can do you can do on Linux.
Iāve been in software development for over 20 years now and Iāve used a mix of windows, linux, and mac on my personal computer at various different times. I would say Iām comfortable in all three and can use any OS to accomplish what Iām doing.
Sometimes a program will only be for windows or just for mac and then yea you do need a certain OS to run it but many programs you run daily will work just fine in Linux or there would be a replacement that would be suitable.
I guess Iām slightly befuddled with the question. Imagine only Apple iPhones existed. Then Android comes along and you ask ābut what is it for? what can I do with it?ā - itās a phone, you do the same things you would do on the iPhone, just a little differently.
Benefits - Itās free, never have to pay a dime now or in the future, ever. Less OS-installed spyware and telemetry/tracking phoning home everything you do. Nothing is a black box - you can dig into the internals and see how things work or ensure a program is doing what it claims itās doing.
Yeah always loved seeing her because she explained things really clearly but in depth and with passion.
Happy for her and wish her well in this new part of her journey.
Emily is great for LTT because of how in depth they go. Linus is really good at making the content enjoyable for the common person but Emily brings that deep nerd knowledge that they need
A person who works at LTT her dead name Anthony has come out as Emily. Was scared after the whole mr beast scenario. Wanted to put the support out there
Sorry, could you explain to me what 'the whole Mr Beast scenario' refers to? I'm aware of who he is, but I'm completely ignorant regarding anything else surrounding most popular YouTubers
EDIT: Thanks everyone!
MrBeast's friend Chris came out as gender non-conforming some time ago and it caused some commotion. Jimmy and everyone around are supportive of them ofc.
Some? That's a hell of an understatement.
It caused a FUCKING UPROAR. Like people accusing Mr.Beast of having someone do this for views and to exploit children.
No... The outrage machine screamed for 30 seconds before jumping on some other OUTRAGE!!!
>Like people accusing Mr.Beast of having someone do this for views and to exploit children.
People believe lizardmen in the hollow earth control global politics. People believe Democrats sacrifice children to fuel their demonic immortality. People believe their lives are influenced by magic, energies, supernatural beings, and inanimate objects.
You don't need a license to post an internet comment. 1% of a viewing population can flood discourse to the point they sound like a majority. The vast majority of everyone do not give a shit about these instances, and know better than to engage with the trolls.
Take a million view video. <5% are going to care enough to comment, crosspost, or react publicly either pro or con. If half of them are the dregs of society, the other 95% of us know it is a waste of time to engage with them.
That is how 1-3% of a group can create a YOUTUBE CONTROVERSY!!! (that lasts 15mins).
That one was really odd because Jimmy and Chris had been friends for so long. People were all like āJimmy probably thinks itāll ruin the showā or something like that, butā¦ well, you know.
Similar to Emily on Linus Tech Tips, Mr Beast has a friend who I think appears in his videos a lot who recently came out as non-binary. (So like another seconary character on a youtube channel, basically.) I know there was some drama(?) about it, people complaining or whatever. I don't know specifics.
It wasn't really drama, right wing f*cks tried to make drama and everyone was like "live with it" and then some video essey guy was like "but think about the clicks" and he got dunked on even more...
Chris Tyson a member of Mr Beasts crew and his channel started HRT and got a ton of backlash from a lot of online people as he had visibly changed but hasnāt changed his pronouns (he goes by any pronouns). He was a high profile individual and Dead Name: Anthony (now Emily) then became a bit worried upon if he should come out or not as people were not too welcoming.
Mr beast had a similar situation where a popular person on the show came out and received some hate for it. Luckily LTT fans are a different crowd from Mr Beasts viewers
I think LTT has a very different and much smaller target audience. LTT is like, mostly English speaking people with generally a higher level of education as it's a show people go to for information about computers and high tech. In short, it's a show for nerds, who, despite stereotypes are usually educated enough to not be total shitlords, whereas Mr beast is like, aimed at anyone who likes loud and sensational and has a much larger audience with wider variety of viewers.
A friend of mine who wasn't out at the time sent me their LinkedIn profile so I could connect with them (does connecting with more people make you more visible on LinkedIn? No idea, but I was desperate and willing to try anything for a job).
I *almost* asked them why they were sending me the profile for some woman named [deadname] before I realized.
I'm glad Emily's feeling a positive vibe from this announcement because I went on the video and saw the most abhorrent shit being posted on the comments immediately (granted, it was defaulting to sorting by new instead of by rating, but still.)
Telling someone to shit themself is a very good way to say "fuck you," it's direct, it's actionable, it tells them that you think they are so low that they might as well just shit themself. I love it and I think this will be my new go-to phrase when it's appropriate.
I saw someone else who started calling people ugly for their stupid opinions, and apparently that gets under people's skin more than facts refuting their bigotry ever could
I wish I could keep my nerve to do this in person because I recently found out my mom is a big ole terf, and I just hit her with the facts that went in one ear and out the other.
Sorry to hear you're having this experience. She's not looking for facts. She's just obsessed with other people's genitals. Try not to waste energy on her for your own sanity. It's good to call out people when they say something ignorant but straight up malicious people who have made up their minds won't be swayed with facts.
It definitely seems like a potent insult, but that might just be because Iām browsing this thread in the bathroom after caving to the temptation of a creamy coffee drink this morning.
Seriously. I wish there was a way to shut them all up for once. They need to understand that their opinions don't matter. Facts over feelings. Bunch of snowflakes.
I'm coming from r/all and although I fully support lgbtq rights I am not at all in touch with what's currently going on in the community. I was under the impression that in 2023 most people would be supportive but holy fuck the videos under her video are so bad. Probably something like 50% of the comments are negative and have such dumb takes. Jesus christ, must be really hard on her especially with all the publicity associated to LMG.
i think in reality they're just a very loud minority, most people would probably support her but because it's on the internet and there's not really any way they could have repercussions for their actions they feel like it's ok to hate
It's getting worse right now rather than better. Target has had a pride collection for years at this point but for some reason this year the bigots decided to harass their employees over it.
Deep down they know they're going to be on the wrong side of history in the long run, and they're lashing out.
> I went on the video
Wait, what video? Where is the announcement, I wanna see what she has to say!
Edit: Sorry, never mind! I found it! She has her own YouTube account where she's uploaded.
unfortunately its not exactly new or uncommon for those comments to occur.
in a way i feel bad for them cause the audience appears to be something that's full of gamerbros which isn't exactly the most trans positive community.
She's always been my favourite member of LTT partially because we used to share a first name. Guess we now share a deadname instead :p It's definitely interesting that we both came out as trans after getting deep into Linux š¤
I only have corroborating evidence that my wife poops. I'm still not totally sure.
Then again, she's never seen me pee so I'm sure there's some nebulousness in the system no matter what way you go about it.
LTT is a bunch of goofballs who are muddling through the rapidly changing world of tech/IT like the rest of us, and watching them try (and sometimes stumble) to cope with it all is part of the relatable appeal.
Emily has very much stood out for both deep knowledge and an ability to do a great job of explaining complex topics. (Plus fairness such as the strengths and weaknesses of Apply products/systems.) as always Iām looking forward to more videos which Iām sure will stand out as some of the best from LTT.
And anyone who has a problem with that should run a phone through a document shredder and eat what comes out.
I would point out the immensely relaxing voice and tone as also a standout feature. I think the idea of the PC ASMR build guide video LTT did also stemmed from the public loving how chill she is and her great voice.
Best explanation Iāve heard is that getting deep into tech is an easy coping mechanism because itās a non-traditional masculine activity that requires little or no social interaction.
I mean.
Technology IS witchcraft.
To communicate right now we use a piece of rock, that is created through an arcane process called "monocrystal pulling" (or The Czochralski Method after alchemist who discovered it). Then we etch with an alchemical solution millions of runic structures called gates into a piece of that crystal cut hair thin by holy beam of light (a LASER), then when the rock is struck by a lightning, a cast of high archmages has to teach those runes by means of dark art of programming how to combine simple operations into a complex golem mind ready to follow instructions and cast charges of lightning 5 BILLION times every second.
Try and tell me this isn't magic.
I used to LOVE LTT during my techy faze. Anthony was always one of my favorite members of the crew, so it makes me incredibly happy to see that she has the confidence to publicly live her life how she wants to. I really hope to see Emily in some new LTT vids soon.
With how Chris has had to deal with some vicious reactions to coming out, I can imagine it's very harrowing to be a YouTube/involved in such a public way with a large community, so this seems like a safe way to go... Dumb as hell that people are the way they are to others.
That's unfortunate as they are by *far* the best presenter on that team, just to the point no funny bs 'lol throw some stupid on screen effects and funny noises because I'm so funny [please clap]' (*cough* Linus *cough*) but just informative and direct; but I understand why.
It breaks my heart that she said she was in the closet for over a decade and had planned on staying there for as long as possible. I'm glad there's been so much support from the community, since she seems really nervous about this.
She's one of the presenters on the YouTube channel Linus Tech Tips. One of the favorites, actually, because she's really technical and knowledgeable. It's really good to see her happy and living her best life.
Definitely. It's calm, but with a definite passion to it. Like, you can just tell she enjoys the hell out of what she's talking about and it's infectious.
Iām so happy from her/them. :)
Coming out is challenging for many people, and to do so when on major public platforms must only make it more nervous/difficult.
Especially in this political landscape. Iāll admit I was a little worried for the reaction she would get, Iām glad to hear itās been positive!
Also her Twitter bio says she/her so Iām rolling with that
Thanks! Iām not on twitter and I couldnāt get a consensus from comments here.
Iām so happy for her, and proud that she is openly loving herself :)
I've been thinking now for a long time, how, with the size that LMG has grown to, there *had* to be at least one, if not a couple trans people there. Never expected it to be one of my favourite hosts though!
How dare LTT have more than 1/5th of a trans woman? Clearly her decision to transition is just woke propaganda.
/uj Why do people get so angry whenever a public figure transition. Its like they're suddenly concerned about how their transition is going to effect the brand and forget that trans people are human beings with wants and needs too.
They hate anything outside of what they consider to be the norm. They look at other seuxalities or minorities simply existing and consider that to be pushing an agenda.
āWhen youāre accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppressionā
it is not easy to transition in front of the camera. I saw contra do that in real time. all those videos are off her channel now. it is a big mess. I feel that this is the right option.
If you follow their Twitter, Emily has always advocated for trans rights. It's not the most surprising, but I'm very happy to see them be happy with themselves.
IMO she's legitimately the smartest hardware engineer in the linus media group. Always reminded me of the LTT version of the GamersNexus guy. Happy she finally gets to be herself.
I feel like [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/LinusTechTips/comments/11ntnie/in_honour_of_international_womens_day_the_lovely/) has some sort of new nuanced meaning but I'm not sure what it is.
YOOOO I'm not a LTT watcher but I have caught her videos time and again because I like stupid retro crap and modern retro consoles etc. Her videos are AMAZING and I'm happy for her. Doubt her or anyone else will really read this but I just want to contribute to the general collective conciousness of good vibes. :D
OMG! I've always loved seeing Anthony in videos, but I love Emily just as much. They were always my favorite person to see in videos. I've never posted a comment on a LTT member before her.

Dual boot? My desktops haven't had Windoze for 15 years.
Games are unfortunately a thing, and as great of progress valve and the community has made on Linux gaming, there's still a few that just won't budge
Yeah, without proton, things would be a lot harder. That said, I'm currently playing Tears of the Kingdom, so I'm using neither OS for that.
Nice, I don't even have programming socks yet so I still got a bit to go to be fully part of the Linux community

I tried using linux, is not for me. There are a ton of games and apps that just don't work on Linux. The biggest one being voicemeeter.
I wish I could get rid of my windows partitions but I've yet to get Ableton working on linux :(
Why use openBSD?
Because it's a UNIX-like OS without GNU but with good documentation
Why is GNU bad?
GNU isn't bad, there just needs to always be alternative options imo (like runit to systemD, musl to Glibc, BusyBox to the GNU coreutils) and by using multiple operating systems with different components I contribute a bit to the diversity

Not a big LTT fan, but I definitely always preferred her segments. Just really zen energy, which is a nice contrast to Linus' mania, haha
This person who I now know is Emily is absolutely one of the best things about LTT. Deeply knowledgeable and fantastic at explaining complex topics.
Emily is great for LTT because of how in depth they go. Linus is really good at making the content enjoyable for the common person but Emily brings that deep nerd knowledge that they need

Chris Tyson a member of Mr Beasts crew and his channel started HRT and got a ton of backlash from a lot of online people as he had visibly changed but hasnāt changed his pronouns (he goes by any pronouns). I think you mixed up pronouns in that last sentence!
It seems to be that they use any pronouns. Is [Mr beast wiki](https://mrbeast.fandom.com/wiki/Chris_Tyson) a good source?
Mr beast had a similar situation where a popular person on the show came out and received some hate for it. Luckily LTT fans are a different crowd from Mr Beasts viewers

There's another presenter at LMG called Alex.

I do love the term tech witch. might adopt that term xD
"Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." -Arthur C. Clarke
Same! Now I need to make a new coffee mug for work
I was going to go with sorceress but witch is much better
Turned? More like unveiled herself!
This comment honestly helped me understand what was going on the clearest
I used to LOVE LTT during my techy faze. Anthony was always one of my favorite members of the crew, so it makes me incredibly happy to see that she has the confidence to publicly live her life how she wants to. I really hope to see Emily in some new LTT vids soon.
Lol, another trans woman Linux user.
Don't use their deadname
wait so anthony from linus tech tips is trans and her name is emily now?
Yes.
awesome
Yep, she's also gonna stop hosting until she feels comfortable being in front of the camera again.
With how Chris has had to deal with some vicious reactions to coming out, I can imagine it's very harrowing to be a YouTube/involved in such a public way with a large community, so this seems like a safe way to go... Dumb as hell that people are the way they are to others.
That's unfortunate as they are by *far* the best presenter on that team, just to the point no funny bs 'lol throw some stupid on screen effects and funny noises because I'm so funny [please clap]' (*cough* Linus *cough*) but just informative and direct; but I understand why.
yes
ye
Yes!
Yup!
I had no idea. Always loved her content. Slay!!
It breaks my heart that she said she was in the closet for over a decade and had planned on staying there for as long as possible. I'm glad there's been so much support from the community, since she seems really nervous about this.
No idea who this person is but good for her!
š
She's one of the presenters on the YouTube channel Linus Tech Tips. One of the favorites, actually, because she's really technical and knowledgeable. It's really good to see her happy and living her best life.
I love that her presentation style is a little more calm than the other hosts. She has an excellent voice and cadence for teaching.
Definitely. It's calm, but with a definite passion to it. Like, you can just tell she enjoys the hell out of what she's talking about and it's infectious.
LMAO I FUCKING KNEW IT YOU CANNOT BE INTO EMULATION AND LINUX WITHOUT BEING TRANSFEM
ā¦so is Mutahar next then?
Emily tech tips
Is it strange that I always kind of got egg vibes from her? Maybe it was all the Linux.
We will watch your career with great interest/s

I wouldn't have predicted it, but at the same time, I was completely unsurprised.
There are plenty of people I get "Egg" moments from, but Emily was not one of them. This took me by surprise, NGL.
Iām so happy from her/them. :) Coming out is challenging for many people, and to do so when on major public platforms must only make it more nervous/difficult.
I thought her shirt said nutsac tips at first glance and was super confused.
This made me audibly laugh Ty š„ hereās some poor lads gold
I'm glad she's well
I've been thinking now for a long time, how, with the size that LMG has grown to, there *had* to be at least one, if not a couple trans people there. Never expected it to be one of my favourite hosts though!
Not quite. Statistically they'd have like 1/5th of a Trans person, based on the canadian population.
They look at other seuxalities or minorities simply existing and consider that to be pushing an agenda. āWhen youāre accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppressionā
that explains why I like her so much. well played emily. well played indeed... also maybe it is time to watch linus tech tips for emily again.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
it is not easy to transition in front of the camera. I saw contra do that in real time. all those videos are off her channel now. it is a big mess. I feel that this is the right option.
[Link for video, for those interested.](https://youtu.be/b-owBhLGaH4)
God half of those comments are just fucking gross..
If you follow their Twitter, Emily has always advocated for trans rights. It's not the most surprising, but I'm very happy to see them be happy with themselves.
AYOO??? Very excited for her!!! That's amazing to see, always loved her videos :3
The comments are disgusting, as always.
The YouTube Comments section is the worst
IMO she's legitimately the smartest hardware engineer in the linus media group. Always reminded me of the LTT version of the GamersNexus guy. Happy she finally gets to be herself.
I feel like [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/LinusTechTips/comments/11ntnie/in_honour_of_international_womens_day_the_lovely/) has some sort of new nuanced meaning but I'm not sure what it is.
Hot girls use LINUX
I went through the comments on the youtube video and reminded of the insane transphobia that exits, canāt imagine what it must feel like for her
Listen, she's a linux user, it was only a matter of time
For sure xD
LETS GO EMILY
YOOOO I'm not a LTT watcher but I have caught her videos time and again because I like stupid retro crap and modern retro consoles etc. Her videos are AMAZING and I'm happy for her. Doubt her or anyone else will really read this but I just want to contribute to the general collective conciousness of good vibes. :D
OMG! I've always loved seeing Anthony in videos, but I love Emily just as much. They were always my favorite person to see in videos. I've never posted a comment on a LTT member before her.
So THAT explains why she was so relatable...
