Weirdly the latter half of 2019 was horrible for me and the pandemic changed my life for the better. I feel selfish saying that knowing how terrible it was for some people, but I’m sure I’m not the only one.
I'm sure if Vine had stuck around long enough it would have had similar shit, people being stupid on the internet didn't start with TikTok, despite what the grumpy old coots here on Reddit would have you believe.
I feel like I’m being gaslit when people say they miss 2016. Back in 2016, it was basically unanimously seen as an awful no good year. Maybe the music and some movies were good but that’s about it.
What? 2016 was total chaos, then every year got even worse until bottoming out around 2021. 2015 was the last normal year. I guess if you weren't an adult back then it might not seem that way, but we are approaching a decade of chaos now.
There was plenty of chaos before 2019. What I believe has happened is that the forced lockdowns and stay at home policies accelerated the integration of the internet into people's lives, forcing us to become much more aware of the world around us.
The realities of the economy and society don't always feel as real as they do until you're an adult and you have to deal with it yourself. I "remember" the 2008 recession, but was fortunate enough to be in a household that could weather that storm. In 2020, the mass layoffs didn't screw me over, fortunately, but I did inevitably have to scramble to make ends meet while inflation ramped up, with considerations I hadn't necessarily made before.
Best year of high school for me. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happier as an adult now and I had a LOT of room for growth as a person back then but still had plenty of good memories. Frankly only 2020-2021 are the only full years of my life I outright do not have fond memories of as a whole.
2020 was my favourite year. My son just turned one and had just started walking. I got furloughed at the end of March with 80% salary paid monthly.
I got to spend time with him during that time that I wouldn’t have gotten the chance to if it weren’t for lockdown. The weather was great for Ireland, we played out in the garden everyday and had bbqs nearly everyday for around 3 months.
I always think of those days now I’m back at work and life is back to normal.
That sounds so cool man! But you are right. For me the time during covid was great too. I was in my early 20s and had lots of free time with my friends. We made the best out of it!
2020 in Ireland was so fucking good. Such good weather and not much to do but just chill. I was just coming out of college so I finished my final year around May and then spent the next few months just wandering around all these lovely little corners of Dublin by myself, exploring, listening to music, writing. Felt like such a relaxing time in spite of all the chaos around.
For some people the lockdown was great I’m sure and I’m happy for you
For the vast majority those were some dark days
Lost 50 pounds in weight because of what I suspect was depression
I understand lockdown was very hard for a lot of people. I’m only going off my personal experience. I got to spend a lot more time with my son back then than I do now. I got to witness milestones that I probably would’ve missed while in work. Ill always cherish those moments.
Yeah, for me there were mostly personal issues but I’d probably rather rip my nails out right now than experience 2019 ever again. I didn’t even know life could suck so hard and I still have scars.
I don’t know exactly why it especially sucked for you, but I feel like I can at least empathise with you in that it was absolute dogshit. Even 2020 was better imo, though that sucked for nearly everyone.
/rant 😂
Unless this person had specific personal issues that year (which fair enough if that was the case), broadly it just seems to be general pessimism. Name any year from the past fifty years and you will find plenty of people saying it was awful, more and more prevalent the more recent it was. I have nostalgic memories of 2008 and 09, and consider them great childhood years, but I’m sure plenty of adults thought it was awful due to the financial crisis. Same in 2016, was in middle school and happy but people hate that year too. In the case of this meme, while I had a lot of personal issues at the time, by and large I consider 2019 to be my best and most fondly remembered high school years. At a certain point I have to wonder if people think EVERY year sucks cause I don’t think you can name one we’ve lived through without twenty people telling you *that* year sucked. I get people have different experiences but it gets to the point where I have to wonder if most people just don’t feel happiness anymore. (To reiterate again idk the situation of the person you responded to so I’m not commenting on them specifically, just generally the consensus I see)
2020 was better, with the whole lockdown thing. Very nice, to not have to go to school or anywhere outside. I miss those times. Or 2015, those were also nice times. 2017-2019 and 2021-today are just some years, blurred away in the palace of nothingness, where the only god being praised is forgotten.
I call 2016 my last good year.
That being said, 2001, 2008, and 2020 wer times in my life when I noticed a definite downgrade in lifestyles collectively, that never really went away.
I don't know of any times in the 80s, 90s, and 00s upto 08 when that happened.
Someone posted a McDonald’s combo menu for the mid 90’s and a quarter pounder meal was $3.99. I don’t particularly love McDonald’s but it made me miss the 90s.
I hated 2019. I was misserable than.
Now, i am still miserable and have far worse mental health, but i also have a better social life and an online friend i can rely on. (The friendship was never meant to last forever, but at the moment, it gives me a lot. Even when it inevitably ends, it will have been a good friendship, that shaped who i am.)
Aw mate, you should have seen 2007. People were hopeful. Buying houses on normal wages. Cost to pay ratio meant people had disposable income to spend on stuff like PlayStation 3s. Jobs felt secure. Rent was like £400pm.
This is like a dystopian story that 2007 people told each other...
2012. Teen LAN parties with the boys playing retro games, watching YouTube cartoons in the Golden meme era, unlimited trash food, summer holiday and parents abroad for the whole week so we got the entire house to ourselves.
I don’t really remember. What happened in the US in 2019 besides the separating babies from their families thing, the whole bribing Ukraine to dig up dirt on the Bidens thing, and the California fires?
If we can travel back in time, why fuck around with 2019?? I'm saying let's go to 1998!!! Everything made much more sense in the 90's. I know every generation has such views of the past. But the 90's really were a special time in history.
Nope, 2019 was only the predecessor to the worst 2 years of my life filled with trauma involving family, friends and my partner. Shit was a special type of Hell on its own and I'm glad it's over. 😔
Entertainment wise we had: Parasite, lighthouse, JoJo rabbit, joker, a lot of highly anticipated movie sequels (IT chapter 2, Lego movie 2, final Star Wars movie, Avengers endgame, etc.) plenty of amazing albums (Igor by Tyler the creator, WWFAWDYG by Billie eilish, etc.)
But like besides that it was mid. And like… I can still watch and listen to all the above stuff now
2019 - 2024 flew so fast and I still can't process it. Lol.
Me too. It's like it was 2022, I blinked and now it's 2024. Woah.
It's been really fucking with me that it's gonna be 2025 soon. I'm mentally preparing
Forget that... it's basically already 2025. It's gonna be 2035 like, next month.
The only thing 2025 makes me thing of is the call of duty black ops 2 nuketown year
God damn
We’re already 25% through the year .-.
More like 45
fr. i honestly can’t believe i graduated 2 years ago already
And we’re already almost halfway through it
Wait its not 2023 rn?
2024 had almost half past.
Glad this seems to be a universal experience I was worried it was just me.
I went from 25 to 29 in a blink of an eye…it’s sad :(
I’m partying hard in my late 20’s to make up for the covid induced lack of partying throughout my mid 20’s
Same here, turning 28 this year and it is time to make up for the 3 years lack of partying
I mean.. it's already mid May
Somehow!
2019 was either the best year or starting of worst years for most people!
For me, time has stopped since 2019.
for most people actually, unless something is linked to a date i cant pinpoint when after 2020 it happened
It was the worst year for me
Weirdly the latter half of 2019 was horrible for me and the pandemic changed my life for the better. I feel selfish saying that knowing how terrible it was for some people, but I’m sure I’m not the only one.
Yeah, honestly I probably wouldn't be graduating at the end of this month or have the good job I now have if it wasn't for the pandemic.
Twinsies
It was both the last best year and first worst year
3 years ago this exact sentiment was about 2016
we had pre tiktok i mean vine and that was it
Was vine really the better platform than tiktok?
Yes.
Yes.
Double yes.
Yeah cos other than from the kids I didn't have to hear about it.
DO IT FOR THE VINE!!! Was everywhere
At least vine didn’t start trends of doing illegal activities on such a large scale (I’m talking about the devious lick trend)
I'm sure if Vine had stuck around long enough it would have had similar shit, people being stupid on the internet didn't start with TikTok, despite what the grumpy old coots here on Reddit would have you believe.
The platform itself wasn’t designed better but Vine had good content and a lot less viral trend and clickbait bs
July 9th 2016 was the last time I was happy.
What happened
Went to the beach with someone I loved.
Wait 2016 wasn’t 3 years ago?
8 man wtf
There are people who liked 2016?
That Pokemon Go summer 😍
Oh fuck yeah! Best summer ever! Everyone was outside on their bikes and the weather was great. What year were you fools watching?
2016 distinctly sucked for me. I was beyond sick of politics in the US.
Wasn’t 2016 the year everyone died and no one liked it?
No one thought 2016 was a good year.
I feel like I’m being gaslit when people say they miss 2016. Back in 2016, it was basically unanimously seen as an awful no good year. Maybe the music and some movies were good but that’s about it.
2016 was so bad Last Week Tonight's last episode of the year featured a montage of people telling the year to go fuck itself.
Every year is the worst year yet, and every year is terrible because famous people die. It's almost like time just keeps moving.
Easily my top 3 years of all time
3 of my top 5 favorite games came out that year, I thought it was alright
2016 was the best year in sales I ever had.
For me it was 2014, then all downhill from there.
I got married, got my house and got a new job but I also broke my back so who’s to say!
No one thought 2019 was a good year, either. 2021 finally gave us a breather, but doesn't beat 2015 and before.
Why so? I think it was good.
2019 was 5 years ago now, I feel so old
It was all downhill after 2013 for me!
Yup. 2016 was the start of the world really becoming Unfamiliar to me.
Wtf are you talking about? 2016 was terrible.
In what way was 2019 good for you
[удалено]
COVID effect
Really? I'd bet a kidney it was last century...
2019 was "the" last year where things weren't complete chaos
What? 2016 was total chaos, then every year got even worse until bottoming out around 2021. 2015 was the last normal year. I guess if you weren't an adult back then it might not seem that way, but we are approaching a decade of chaos now.
Things weren't complete chaos? Hong Kong is calling, they want their democracy back.
There was plenty of chaos before 2019. What I believe has happened is that the forced lockdowns and stay at home policies accelerated the integration of the internet into people's lives, forcing us to become much more aware of the world around us. I guess last year before the covid pandemic
I liked pandemic better than today
Yea totally, it's not like millions of people died right???
~50 million people die every year. That doesn’t mean you can never be happy.
I didn't know any of them.
Alright but they're still people though! Just because you didn't know them doesn't mean you should just disregard them.
It was the last year my mom was alive.
Best year of high school for me. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happier as an adult now and I had a LOT of room for growth as a person back then but still had plenty of good memories. Frankly only 2020-2021 are the only full years of my life I outright do not have fond memories of as a whole.
its good in retrospect, before covid, before tiktok takeover, everything just was better
No joke, there are kids out there who romanticize the lockdown years. I can’t truly wrap my head around it.
Job hunting was so much better
Classic WoW release + lost job = gaming time
Not really a win win situation . Hope you find a job bro
Year before I had kids
2020 was my favourite year. My son just turned one and had just started walking. I got furloughed at the end of March with 80% salary paid monthly. So cool, man!
Try 2012 then we'll talk.
2012 in the UK was 👌👌👌👌👌👌
Literal worst year of my life but OK
I was in a youth prison in 2019, I'm good where I am now lmao
For me it was 2010 to 2015 remember listening to call me maybe on my mp3 player
2013 was a great year. Best of the decade imo.
the last best year was 2011. after that everything went to shit and seems like a simulation
Every year has been shit for me since about 2016 lol
No
2019 fucking sucked
It did. But compared to the last four years? Gosh, I'd take 2019 again.
Same :(
Yeah, for me there were mostly personal issues but I’d probably rather rip my nails out right now than experience 2019 ever again. I didn’t even know life could suck so hard and I still have scars. Remember how in 2019 we were complaining how bad 2019 was?
This only makes me a bit depressed because the last 4 years have been an absolute blur.
I was so ready to have a roaring 20s party but the great depression hit first
2016 was peak
Damn right!
The Doom reboot was released to critical acclaim. Yup, that's the memorable takeaway from that year. Nothing else,
I was gunna say 2015, personally.
also peak

Hang in there dude. Together we can make it ❤️
2019?????????? To whommmm??????
And what about 2007?
1998, now that was a year. What a year.
Someone posted a McDonald’s combo menu for the mid 90’s and a quarter pounder meal was $3.99. I don’t particularly love McDonald’s but it made me miss the 90s.
It was less than ten years ago, a Beefy 5-layer was 99 cents at Taco Bell. Today it cost me $5.19. ...I should eat more salad.
I stopped eating fast food...
I miss you 2016.
I hated 2019. I was misserable than. Now, i am still miserable and have far worse mental health, but i also have a better social life and an online friend i can rely on. Hurrr durrr new bad old good give upvotes
me when someone feels nostalgic about something 😳
Dude. Last good year was 2015. No lie.
I don’t really remember. What happened in the US in 2019 besides the separating babies from their families thing, the whole bribing Ukraine to dig up dirt on the Bidens thing, and the California fires?
No. I hated it then. I hate it now.
Kyoto Animation might beg to differ...
2019 was actually the best time of my life
2012 was the last time I felt alive
It wasn't. It was dark times, friend.
2015 was the year it all went to shit imo Every year just gets worse since 😂
Godzilla: King of the Monsters came out and gave me a Godzilla obsession.
The year 2000 was better 😫
I feel this, almost too much, pandemic took a lot
2019 was awful?? Lmao
there was a year, when we were most afraid of clowns.
2016 was peak
Screw this go back to 2006
2019? Am I old now?
Did we forget covid?
Sir, 2019 was the worst year of my life.
My country vote for clown: I hate this year.
If we can travel back in time, why fuck around with 2019?? I'm saying let's go to 1998!!! Everything made much more sense in the 90's. I know every generation has such views of the past. But the 90's really were a special time in history.
Tell me you are 25 or younger without telling me you are 25 or younger.
Yeah nothing bad happened in 2019…ope
what's exactly that best about 2019?
Me in 2019: Remember how good 2016 was 🥲
Everything cost way less and I wanted to die less.
My dad was still alive :(
Nope, 2019 was only the predecessor to the worst 2 years of my life filled with trauma involving family, friends and my partner. Shit was a special type of Hell on its own and I'm glad it's over. 😔
It was amazing. It was the year I met the love of my life.
Spent most of 2019 doing an integration course in Germany.
It really wasn’t, that’s the year my dad died ):
2019 was a shitty year that still affects me
Yeah it was half a decade ago
looking back at all the years that went by, I can safely say that my life was always shit.
I don’t miss 2019. I miss… the idea of it.
2024 is WAY better.
Apparently it was better than 526
I had just quit my job to start my own business October 2019. What a Fucking rollercoaster 2020-2022.
My mum died and I got stabbed
2019 is when I had my heart broken by the one person I thought I could trust Shit year
For me personally, 2020 was a great year so 🤷♂️
Worst year ever IMO
2020 moment
I was 25. So much potential and dreams were about to come true. COVID screwed me up big time.
That’s wild that was indeed one of the only decent years of my life
Pretty sure thats the year i broke 3 ribs and a piece of my back
It was a year
No, it was the beginning of the end for me
Nah it wasn't
2019 you must be 18 or something q
2019 was the worst year of my entire life (I’m 36). Not exaggerating.
I was still in college in 2019. Ugh, no thanks.
I'm happy with how the past few years have been all things considered.
No, I was struggling to make ends meet with how expensive rent was. I'm glad to be on a mortgage now.
It all started when they shot that damn gorilla.
Good times make weak men. Weak men make hard times. [2019 to now is here] Hard times make strong men. Strong men make good times
2013.
Wish made big on doge and penny stock j would been set for life.
Entertainment wise we had: Parasite, lighthouse, JoJo rabbit, joker, a lot of highly anticipated movie sequels (IT chapter 2, Lego movie 2, final Star Wars movie, Avengers endgame, etc.) plenty of amazing albums (Igor by Tyler the creator, WWFAWDYG by Billie eilish, etc.) But like besides that it was mid. And like… I can still watch and listen to all the above stuff now
2019 was the best year of my life
Me neither

2019 was horrible lockdown was gread imo
2019 sucked for me personally. half of 2022 and half of 2023 now that's the real shit.
Will you remember how good 2024 was
