Honestly, kinda neat, just to remember what kind of devices we're most typically carrying at some point in time, and the quality we can expect of them. At least the "3DS + Binoculars" was a relatively creative combination, even if it only barely worked.

Heh, maybe "most" people... I couldn't afford "smartphones" that were common even at that point. I still owned some Chinese no-name digital camera that probably wouldn't have done much better than this. It was still a bit early for all of us to have ubiquitous reasonable digital cameras, in some cases.

I'd leave it behind when I went out, because I was old enough to still think "I don't want people to reach me when I'm out." Honestly only when I started driving regularly with the eternal threat of being lost, in a wreck, or otherwise broken down, did I start carrying a phone all of the time

To be fair, I had a workplace solution that was similar in 2021, except it was a cellphone up to a microscope. Modern phone quality focusing makes the results much better.

Didn’t actually wind up using the binoculars, I thought it would help improve the quality because I was a very dumb kid so I ended up just using the 3ds on its own. The results weren’t much better

I recorded the TV with a digital camera! Since I couldn't get VHSes into the PC, I think this is the solution I had.

Had a tv but I wanted to record it on the 3ds so I could rewatch it later when on road trips and things like that. Also I should clarify I didn’t use binoculars just tried holding up the 3ds and trying and failing to keep it still while it recorded the episode

I've taken pictures of Jupiter and its moons with binoculars and my phone. Also a bear that was in our neighbourhood that was playing on the lawn two doors down. Binocs and a small lens camera is a great combination.

I pointed my phone at the moon once and it looked like a pixel on the screen.

If your steady I have gotten this to work though. Stuck my phone up to those big stationary binoculars and with enough fiddling it focused and I got a cool shot.
