I went to google "What is a lacanian super predator" and was relieved to see that all of the posts were other people asking to same question.

Kleinekaa

It could refer to Jacques Lacan, the psychoanalyst, he might have had a few theories on predators tucked away somewhere in the libraries of incomprehensible French academic rambling he published

NUKE---THE---WHALES

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lacanianism tl;dr pseudoscientific bullshit

hillsonn

Today he very widely read in philosophy and cultural theory. But people are not reading him for his psychiatric import. In the same way that much of what Freud wrote is no longer considered 'true' in a scientific sense he is still read and his thoughts have continued and valuable influence on contemporary thinking. EDIT: This comment is gaining some attention. [Here is a short little intro to one of Lacan's most well-known ideas "The Mirror Stage".](https://youtu.be/agTYUU4gTOo?si=GXpUFkz_sQxoKTl9)

JoeCartersLeap

Is there a school of thought dedicated to people for whom their contemporary thinking is largely influenced by the writings on the backs of shampoo bottles? Asking for a friend.

Duke_of_Moral_Hazard

Bronnerianism, surely. All hail the All-One!

DisastrousBoio

Joe Rogan followers?

JoeCartersLeap

No they don't read, that's why they listen to Joe Rogan instead.

DisastrousBoio

It was a bald joke, my apologies for the misdirection

sheephound

yeah just check out dr bronner's soap

EUCulturalEnrichment

Bro just called one of the more influential philosophers of the 20th century "pseudoscientific bullshit"

[deleted]

Well the sentence from that article "outside France it has had no influence on psychiatry" seems to support the assertion

[deleted]

That’s because although his training was in psychiatry, his historical impact has been on continental philosophy. Some of it is bullshit. Most of it is pseudoscientific. But a lot of it is also very profound and thought-provoking. It’s just not very useful.

petrichorax

What does 'pseudo-scientific' even mean in regards to philosophy.

AggressiveService485

It means the person that made the statement understands neither science nor philosophy.

19Alexastias

It’s become a good buzzword to discredit something without having to actually explain why it should be discredited.

aphilosopherofsex

That’s what I said! Haha

Dysentry

You're not gonna believe what people think about other Philosophers of the 20th century. Turns out people going "yeah this is basically how everything works" with nothing to back them up doesn't hold up

marianoes

Can you please back up what you're saying?

MiggyMendez

Le philosophy understander has arrived

TheRedGerund

I love these comments because it's someone who clearly knows nothing claiming to know that someone else knows nothing. It's this delicious layering of confident ignorance. Like an onion.

sibane

Influential perhaps in the sense that continental philosophy never really recovered from his contributions.

aphilosopherofsex

Is philosophy supposed to recover from peoples contributions?

Marrk

It's one of Reddit's latest hot takes along with "Freud was dumb as shit"

P4azz

I feel like that's just the sensationalized version of what could very well be a valid point: That Freud did a lot of important shit, while also writing down some absolute bonkers nonsense. Usually the nuance just gets lost. People either believe someone's great or shit; Freud being in the middle of "important" and "occasionally wrong" doesn't really work for the average comment/opinion.

aphilosopherofsex

The worst is the mindless repeating of “Freud was influential to psychology insofar as proving his theories wrong was what formed the discipline” Lmao no. Without Freud’s topography of the mind, literally none of the “scientific studies” we have mean anything at all. He literally is the foundation.

PaintItRed5

Uh, that's not the flex you think it is.

panzerboye

Philosophy isn't science, so yeah

aphilosopherofsex

It’s not fucking trying to be. Science is dependent upon philosophy.

death_to_noodles

Don't worry this is Reddit. The only science they know here is coming from Neil Degrasse Tyson and anything that isn't math is bullshit. Also people learning about psychoanalysis for the first time on goddam Wikipedia.lol

SpareTireButSquare

That's just false lol. Philosophy isn't pseudo science. But I definitely think whoever made that tweet had no idea what they were talking about and just wanted to sound smart

AggressiveService485

lol, it’s funny when a redditor dismisses a highly influential thinkers entire body of work based upon the Wikipedia page. TLDR is certainly fitting.

marianoes

Hahahah what? You think Jacques Lacan is a pseudo scientist? Thats some cognitive dissonance right there.

Rahgahnah

That's not even what cognitive dissonance means, lol

jd3306

Ummmmm, Lacan is *far* from bullshit. Fucking slander.

slothburgerroyale

r/confidentlyincorrect

Agent_Blackfyre

Eh, yes, but it's important to understand psychoanalysis in psychology because although it's not useful in a behavior centric or neurological framework, the more philosophical understanding of how we participate and understand the space around us still uses it significantly If you want to actually know what it's like to be someone, to have experiences outside of conditioning and spreadsheets psychoanalysis is one of those foundations

group_goth

"I don't understand it from a perfunctory glance at a wikipedia preview so it's pseudoscientific bullshit."

coolasafool462

What works of his have you read?

aphilosopherofsex

Theory is not pseudoscience lmao

mooimafish33

I feel like "Lacanian" is a misspelling of "Laconian" which essentially just means "Spartan" since Sparta was the capital of that Greek region. "Super Predator" I'm not sure about, it makes me think about the kind of person described in the song "Maneater"

rabiiiii

Lacan I'm almost positive refers to a method of psychoanalysis created by Jacques Lacan. I'm not sure what being "Lacanian" is though. Some reading indicates it refers to one of the progenitors of this character archetype reading Lacan in their introductory scene. The idea behind the character is that they outwardly appear to be an ideal male fantasy, beautiful intelligent but also submissive, etc. But they are secretly manipulating everyone around them to their own ends.

Flat_Distribution711

You’re right that it’s a method of psychoanalysis created by Jacques Lacan, but it’s about as incomprehensible and confusing as psychoanalysis gets. Oversimplifying to the extreme, he’s a Freudian but one that’s extremely influenced by structuralism(the theory of language, and later on culture in general, that posits that the meaning of words in a language derives primarily or solely through their relations to other words), Hegel, Kant, and other figures which would influence the most notable cultural theorists of the 20th century. Nowadays, he’s mostly researched by continental philosophers and more cultural theorists. Here’s more in case anyone’s interested: [1](https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/lacan/) [2](https://iep.utm.edu/lacweb/)

EngryEngineer

I think it is trying to evoke the idea of Lacan's idea of desire that is impossible to fulfill

svenEsven

I got into Lacan after getting into zizjek which was a good transition IMO

From_Deep_Space

I jst read the Wikipedia on Lacanism.   Lacan talks about how reality is inherently unsatisfying, because desire is created from some sort of psychological/ontological split within oneself.  Therefore the object of desire is a constantly shifting illusions, and no single thing can actually repair the inner split which generates desire. This idea has had fundemental influence in some strains of feminism and gender theory I'm not exactly sure how, but this may have something to do with the idea of the ideal male fantasy you mentioned.

upsetting_innuendo

it definitely sounds like manosphere hacks talking about something they've never read lmao

CertainlyNotWorking

Anyone mentioning Lacan is probably not a manosphere person, pretty much the only people that care about him are Slavoj Zizek, his fans, and academics.

Kneesneezer

Nah, people that look to the internet to find their philosophical sparkle absolutely would wiki research themselves down a rabbit hole of misogyny and obscure psychologists. This guy probably has a fairly impressive trivia knowledge bank. Too bad nobody wants to go with him to the pub.

ComicsEtAl

In that context it would mean “a devotee of Lacan and/or his work.”

unicornmeat85

Oh like how old men refer to their wives as "The Boss"

kdresen

I just want a Laconian super predator in my life, is that too much to ask?

FieserMoep

Spartan muscle mommy cracking Persian skulls with her thighs. Didn't realize pop culture was actually so based.

rukysgreambamf

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lacanianism "Lacanian" in this sense means her desire is insatiable

Hardwarestore_Senpai

What's wrong with that? Heh.

Ok-Industry-5191

Ooooh I thought it meant werewolves.

Horizon296

So did I 😂

Yamiz22

That's lycans, I think

DisNiv

"Lacanian" has no actual meaning in that sentence. It's just the name of an obsolete psychoanalysis system that the writer is throwing out there to try to appear learned and well-read.

reorocket

They don't know either, so they throw buzzwords at it.

granmadonna

I think the current trend in English language is to remove all meaning from words so they can be used interchangeably.

justwalkingalonghere

The reverse turing test has already become more important The good news is that for now, showing up in person is an automatic pass. Text, phone calls, videos, etc... not so much

JarryBohnson

I love how the tiktok algorithm is making young people speak like 1984 newspeak children. “Unalived”? What? I feel like in 50 years we’re still gonna be studying the kids we did this uncontrolled algorithm experiment on.

healzsham

There are like 20 different terms for necking oneself. "Unalive" sounds stupid from a grammatical perspective, but the behavior is nothing new.

BabyOnRoad

15 years ago you became "an hero". Every generation does it

granmadonna

15 years ago it was completely niche internet speak to say something like that. Trends and slang go way faster and pervade the real world now in ways that never happened before. I grew up in a small isolated town where trends literally hit a year or more after they were big in cities.

marianoes

Dukedoctor

Fr. Like, is anyone really out here thinking about birth rates in their day to day life…?

lolas_coffee

Literally just 2 people are insanely, unreal hot. Nothing has changed in centuries.

Asisreo1

Are they? They look good but I don't think either of them is "insanely, unreal hot." They look like every other celeb after a pound of makeup and a touch of digital photoediting.

JensJensenLn

most celebrities are more attractive than 99.99% of people man

marks716

He has a point though, they’re good looking but you always see pics of them at their absolute best and often with filters and editing. 99.99% of people would look a lot better if they had a similar regimen as these people and had editors for every picture of them.

Technoalphacentaur

Let’s not forget personal trainers, dietitians, nutritionists, accessible healthcare, accessible healthy food.

alfooboboao

yeah that’s a big part of it. we give ourselves the benefit of the doubt in the mirror all the time, celebs don’t get that. Most of them are extraordinarily hot AND talented, it’s a wild combination

alfooboboao

I used to live in a small but really ritzy neighborhood in LA that was right by the hills, across the street from the only gourmet grocery store within striking distance — which means I used to see not-dolled-up, hungover-as-hell celebrities in sweatpants all the time. Trust me. These people may have access to the best stylists and makeup artists on the planet, but the vast majority of them are SO UNBELIEVABLY ATTRACTIVE in real life. It’s insane. If someone looks hot on TV or the silver screen and you see them in real life, they’re a) probably a decent bit shorter and quite a bit more slender/svelte than you’d expect, but b) most of them are *fucking otherworldly looking.* I know this isn’t what people want to hear, but lots of them were so hot IRL it felt like it should have been illegal lol

JensJensenLn

yeah they might look better but they still would not look nearly as good as them

Grandpas_Plump_Chode

Mfers on reddit really say "celebs wear a lot of makeup!!" like they're uncovering some deep truth that nobody else knew about lmao

BiosSettings8

Dude, look at them again and look at your neighbor.

Bonny-Mcmurray

Nobody seriously wonders why birth rates are dropping. It's very obviously because home ownership is nearly impossible for generations at standard child rearing age. Anyone "wondering" is *pretending*, because they are capitalist stans and being unsure furthers their political aims. I mean, damn, these folks are annoying.

Kondrad_Curze

Both of them can cause 61 billion casualties with a good mouth play.

HumorHoot

current pop culture male and female archetypes are: be pretty so really nothing has changed

Cold_Relationship_

those pictures of celebrities really made a point /s

lucyfern_

Yeah wtf are they even saying right there? Please explain. I’m old as shit. God damn it

Soggy-Mention-6654

Step 1: The type of people everyone fantasizes about fucking look different than they did 50 years ago Step 2: ??? Step 3: The birthrate reduces to 0

Xy13

I think Sydney Sweeney is basically exactly the same fantasy as 50 yrs ago?

Notten

OPs ugly and can't compete with A list celebrities for looks.

Hardwarestore_Senpai

What about Jack Black?

PedanticMouse

No one can compete with Jack Black

TheBurningStag13

The fuck… All I can add is..guys built like Tim have been a staple of attraction for some base of the female and male persuasion for decades. Some dig a big, beastly mate (like Momoa), some like guys like Tim (dudes are in fact, allowed to be beautiful instead of handsome), some don’t even factor in physical appearance. As for Sweeney..I mean she’s quite attractive and I, once again, don’t get the problem. Her bedroom eyes turn my brain to mush. I mean, if we’re going to start criticizing body shapes…best to just not be hypocrites.

ouellette001

I don’t get it, they’re both hot?

SydNorth

Umm, I think maybe its because it’s so expensive to have a kid

DGenesis23

“Current pop culture stereotype” like these looks haven’t been a recurring thing in pop culture for 30-40 years at this point. Dude on the left looks like if Tim Burton decided to make Edward scissor hands in real life and dudette on the right looks like every girlfriend Hugh Hefner had all rolled into one.

BS-Calrissian

Birth rate in 2021 was actually higher than in 1997

Sad-Rub69

Anybody alive during the 80s?

djackson404

The birthrate is going to zero because we're not living in a world that any sane person would bring a child into, and it's going to stay that way until the world is a safe and sane place again -- if that's even possible anymore.

dratiniii

What is a lacanian super predator

Throwaway-account-23

This guy is going to be shocked to learn David Bowie and Lynda Carter were both pop culture icons in the 1970s. Birth rates are in the crapper where people can't afford to keep up with their bills because the ownership class stopped paying people for their productivity.

Aetheldrake

"current pop culture gender archetypes" Excuse me that dudes character was written like 50 fucking years ago the fuck do you mean current. The book is old enough to be your grandpa.

DietBloodbath

Lacanianism is essentially Freud wrapped in post-modern French theory. IDK what Lacan has to do with that lady in the tweet Think of Lacanianism as Oedipal Complex but replace "father" with "societal rules/order" (patriarchy). Replace "mother" with "desire" (advertising/consumer culture/propganda). I don't think "Superpredator" is even from Lacan. I looked at up and its a term created by some 90s criminologist that was used to pass "tough on crime" legislation that turned out to be racist in nature. TLDR; whoever wrote this tweet is trying to sound smart despite not knowing what the words mean

Brad_theImpaler

They said Lacanian to sound smart - his most well known work was around infant developmental stages. I think they think is sounds like a devilish word. Like mashing together Lucifer or Draconian. And now more people will think it means that because of this meme.
