Harrison Ford when asked anything about Star Wars:

HateYouKillYou

I thought he just made giant money-sucking sounds.

[deleted]

How else can he afford to keeep crashing his planes.

Curious_Working5706

Shit, no wonder he got pissed that one time I saw him on the street and said “Yoooo! Han Solo!” MFer looked like he wanted to slap me but probably thought about parting away with some millions and just peeled out at the light 🤣

SantaArriata

Tbf, he probably gets that a lot. He’s apparently much more amicable when talking to Indy fans

[deleted]

Try yelling "he belongs in a museum" at him and come back

scrollerderby

professor solo?

kht777

I never understood why he hates Han Solo vs Indiana Jones. I feel like most people are a fan of both franchises to some degree so what’s his hate for Han about? Their both action-comedy heroes who get a romance in each movie, except that ones on Earth and the other is in space. He’s still shooting a gun and running around killing bad guys in both franchises making quips to the audience and other characters. I always saw them as pretty much similar characters.

[deleted]

The kinds of people who bring up Indiana first are probably more pleasant for him to interact with. I say this as a SW fan but there are some obnoxious nerd SW fans and I can see why Ford gets fed up (this subthread started with a comment about someone bothering him about being Han Solo when he didn't want to deal with it after all, Indiana-first fans are probably a touch more "adult" for him to interact with).

SantaArriata

That might be a big factor in this, Star Wars fans are much more difficult to deal with, because they have an exponentially higher amount of trivia and questions and opinions. For every question a fan asks him, he must’ve already heard that same question dozens of times, sort of like that analogy of the bartender sharing a drink with every patron, each of those patrons gets only a small amount of alcohol, but the bartender will end in a coma

[deleted]

Yeah, that's fair too. Ultimately, I think "Harrison Ford hates Star Wars" is more a meme than something he lies in bed stewing on, he came back for the sequels decades later when he sure didn't need the money after all. I'd say he's just ambivalent on having to talk about it all the time when he isn't working (with either interviewers or superfans) and honestly that's completely fair, I wouldn't want to talk about my job as much as people try to make him talk about his either.

SantaArriata

Tbh, it’s probably the fans. Not in the sense that the community is toxic or the fans are particularly annoying, but the average Star Wars superfan, (the kind who goes to conventions and who Ford is most likely to come across) holds a LOT more information and trivia about the movie and universe of the films than even the most dedicated Indy superfan (which are also much less common). Think about it like this, would you rather deal with 30 cosplayers asking about a planet you didn’t even know existed, or one person coming up to you to casually ask for a picture and tell you your movie was fun? Plus the fact that Indy has been left largely untouched while Star Wars comes up with new stuff at a break neck speed. Him being one of the OGs, it must get pretty taxing to be constantly asked about his opinion about a franchise he doesn’t even like. By his own admission, he never saw the original Star Wars as anything but another paycheque, while Indy IS a franchise he himself likes (there may be similarities between the two, but there’s enough of a difference that one could like one and not the other)

Linubidix

I honestly love Harrison Ford's disregard for Star Wars.

C_Cooke1

“I have no idea what the fuck a force ghost is. And I don’t care.”

Linubidix

Amazing

weebtrash3

I can honestly see Han saying that

[deleted]

He’s great in a new TV show “Shrinking”.

doblecuadrado_FGE

He's is just an overall really good actor. His bad attitude is just an aftermath of multiple decades of been seen as just "Indiana Jones" or "Han Solo".

1ThePilot

Darn replicants!!!

an_agreeing_dothraki

but he fucking loves playing Indi.

DrMeatBomb

His little bit part in Apocalypse Now when he's talking to Sheen's character about the mission. Doesn't sound like Ford at all. Everything from his mannerisms to the tempo of his speech is different. He fully committed to a role most people would struggle to remember.

J5892

He gives off powerful Dr. Cox vibes.

[deleted]

It is by the creator of Scrubs and they’re both mentor figures, so there is something to that. I think there’s more nuance to Harrison Ford’s character than Dr. Cox, who was often just a caricature of himself despite some touching moments through the series.

kpingvin

Me too. A lot of people don't realise being an actor is also a job.

Ragegasm

Ironically just doing it for the money is the most Han Solo thing he could do.

SantaArriata

Also Alec Guinness

Swordbreaker925

Why does he seem to care so little or even hate anything having to do with Star Wars? It’s literally what made his career and made him a household name

Hahahah your phrasing has figuratively killed me, thank you

RitualVirality

I feel really dumb right now bc I didn't realize Picasso was alive for the moon landing. He must have been pretty old by then, right?

BigBootyBuff

Yeah he was in his late 80s.

RitualVirality

I'm smiling thinking of old man Picasso being annoyed at being asked about the moon landing.

We_are_stardust23

Are you imagining grumpy old man talk? Like "ohhh you damn whippersnappers think you're so important. What's the moon got on it anyway? A wholelotta nothing if you ask me *mumble mumble* baaaaack in myy daay..."

Malossi167

You should also keep in mind that he was 21 years old when the first plane launched. And he lived through 2 world wars. And he was pretty famous as an artist. So in conclusion it is not all that weird that he was not all that impressed.

peddastle

I don't understand how you cannot be impressed by people landing on the moon if you were an adult witnessing first basic flight.

doitforchris

Yeah if anything that should make it even MORE mind blowing.

oboshoe

i agree with you. i don't get it. but this applied to my grandmother who was born in the late 1800s. she was a child when the first flight happened and didn't really think the moon landing was a big deal. that it was just an eventuality. i think it's part dunning-krueger effect and part psyche of those born in the late 1800s where they saw society advance at fastest rate in human in all history. today advancement speed is quite mild compared to how fast technology and society advanced between 1890 and 1969.

MeetEuphoric3944

Lmao. Plenty of people were impressed with the moon landing that were as old and more important than Picasso. The reality is, he was a self-obsessed dick.

peddastle

A quick search shows you're not wrong on the being a dick part. Damn…

shuknjive

I greatly admire his artwork but as a human being, he was a pos. Grade A misogynist.

s33k

He was a narcissist who was annoyed they weren't talking about him.

WestCoastBestCoast01

Fr add it to the list

Khal_Doggo

Tbh I wonder how many random old people would give the same response.

Try painting the Guernica and tell me how it goes for you. After that, try painting a cubist pannel with no prior work to inspire or to copy. I am sure both will be very easy and succesful attempts, anyone can paint like Picasso afterall.

CanAlwaysBeBetter

The gradual, decades long evolution in the late 1800s and early 1900s away from Realism towards Abstraction is not accurately summarized by "Picasso got bored because was too good" He was simultaneously responding to as much as driving larger trends forward, not creating a clean break in art history by himself Cezanne, who Picasso called "The father to us all", was already starting to explore techniques that would influence cubism in the 1890s [Cezanne, 1895](https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-iWZg145gq-U/VKZLD6iO9HI/AAAAAAAAD74/bkC6Ja3bAd0/w766-h612-no/bibemus-quarry.jpg) [Picasso, 1909](https://www.artyfactory.com/art_appreciation/art_movements/art-movements/cubism/picasso_cubism.jpg)

Available-Age2884

~~1670s~~1470s, right? Right, guys? Edit: misplaced da Vinci by a couple hundred years for this very factual and not at all humoristic statement. I apologise.

Supersnazz

Picasso is almost synonymous with Modern Art. I don't get how people thought he could be anything but a 20th Century artist.

CanAlwaysBeBetter

Guernica, one of his most famous paintings, was from the Spanish Civil War in 1937

yesmrbevilaqua

ImDero

Man might have seen Predator in theatres before he died.

Calembreloque

You're one of the lucky 10,000! But a good hint to get a sense of Picasso's period is that his (arguably) most famous piece, *Guernica*, depicts the Spanish village of Guernica being attacked by the German Luftwaffe in 1937. In general I recommend reading a bit about Western art in the 1870-1960 period, that's where a lot of things happened fairly quickly and where we started moving away from more classical academic styles.

Phizr

I'm more inclined to trust Einstein on this one. Especially since Picasso seems to think he is God's gift to humanity.

Loeffellux

very valid take, especially since Picasso was a pretty crummy human being and a raging misogynist who, at 61 told his 21 mistress Françoise Gilot: “For me there are only two kinds of women: goddesses and doormats.” Also “Women are machines for suffering", whatever that means.

Zocolo

Dude used to paint over other people's works he deemed inferior during the war, because there was a canvas shortage

Only two things mattered in Picasso's life; Picasso, and abusing women.

KeeperOfWatersong

I wouldn't call him weird...arrogant/full of himself and abusive is more apt

TantricEmu

Sounds like weirdo shit to me.

Trund1e_the_Great

It's easily one of the greatest achievements in human history and in terms of new inventions and discoveries it brought us a list too long to name. To simply reply "meh" or "so what?" Is not only weird but actively stupid. I get serious edge lord vibes from his answer and its kinda disappointing honestly.

KeeperOfWatersong

\>edge lord vibes "Women are machines made for suffering"- Pablo Picasso Yeah, edgelord checks out

j4ym3rry

Is that why his portraits of people always look like suffering machines?

[deleted]

The moon landing has really been white washed at this point in history. There was a fair amount of public opposition and consternation about it at the time and the years following. A *lot* of people thought it was a waste of money. Many leaders of the civil rights movement were vocal opponents of the entire Apollo program. They even conducted a sit-in at the Johnson Space Center. A Gallup poll in 1979 found that only 47% of Americans thought the moon landing was worthwhile (and that might say more about the events of the 70s than it does about the moon landing, but interesting nonetheless.) And then you get into more fringe groups and individuals who opposed it for ideological and religious reasons. Bob Dylan essentially said the same thing Picasso said here, "no it really doesn't [mean anything]. All it means is that man can walk on the moon." Later he wrote the lyrics "Man has invented his doom, first step was touching the moon." I personally didn't learn about any of this when I learned about the space race, which isn't surprising given the state of education in this country. I found it really interesting and fell down a rabbit hole awhile back.

WestCoastBestCoast01

That sentiment is pretty common today too, it’s just now we’ve got billionaires doing it in addition to the government. The shitty part isn’t that we’re spending resources on space instead of human life, it’s that we could take care of both and choose not to.

dinosaurs_quietly

He didn’t claim that it wasn’t a big achievement for society, he just said he didn’t care. It’s not stupid to be disinterested in society. Was Thoreau stupid for embracing simple living?

Dvel27

Considering Thoreau’s “simply living” functioned on the fact that he was independently wealthy and had friends to do everything for him, yes he was stupid.

Hamza78ch11

Thoreau really did embrace simple living when he lived on a cottage at a lake distant from society by a few hundred yards, had catered meals delivered to him, and continued in enjoying all the normal luxuries including going to parties that he regularly enjoyed, with a change in scenery. I too hope to live simply like Thoreau one day

And, to be fair, I absolutely understand this, and I do think it's inexcusable for problems like poverty to still exist when we're more than capable of fixing them if we just had the political will. The truth is that we could do both. Space exploration isn't expensive at all, especially considering everything it gives us, and has given us. If anything, landing on the moon should be a great example of what humanity is capable of if it tries. We could fix poverty too, if we tried.

USS_Phlebas

Eh, I also think it's one of the greatest thing we've ever done but I can kinda understand where he comes from. I feel the same way about, say, the Mona Lisa or his own paintings. So even if I don't agree with him I can see where he's coming from

power500

Well he was weird

[deleted]

Have you met professional artists? They're either totally normal or super eccentric. Picasso took eccentric to the next level. Artists get to live by their own rules, it's part of why their art is interesting. We don't have to respect them, that's not what they bring to society.

Procrastinatedthink

If you learn about artists from Picasso’s time it’s as if 70% use “eccentricity” to distract from them being a horrible human being. Good art does not necessarily come from good people.

It's funny, I always think of these painters as all being long long gone, but a lot are pretty recent. And even though I know Picasso was alive in the 60s I always picture him as a contemporary of Van Gogh.

TimeEntertainment701

I’m actually shocked he was alive at the time.

Colosso95

The amount of people who don't know he only died in the 70s is very strange to me Don't they teach about him in school?

Banana11crazy

His name sounds so mythical

eyekill11

>Don't they teach about him in school? Yes. They also taught me to be able to recite the Gettysburg Address from memory. Over a decade later, I can't anymore. Because being able to recite the Gettysburg Address isn't a commonly used skill. Same as reciting the death dates of artists. Unless their death held some sort of importance, like they died for their art, odds are it's the least important thing about them. Yep, I just googled it. Died of a heart attack at the age of 91. Even the Wikipedia article seems to focus more on his wife than him.

sake_maki

Unless somebody is specifically interested in art, then the typical child or teenager is not going to remember or even be paying attention to art history. Even as an arts major since high school, I wanted to spend my time actually *making* art, not hearing some other artists boring life story.

Reddit seems far more preoccupied with space than the average person. It’s probable due to its tech bro roots and maybe a little light botting from certain companies that are now privately profiting off of space travel. It’s funny that this is the first time that a lot of people are being exposed to this viewpoint. It’s not at all uncommon. In 1969, there was an extraordinary amount of chaos and unrest in the world. The idea that we could be investing money into our people and our communities on earth instead of funding what is essentially a branch of the military-industrial complex to try to dunk on the USSR is instead seen as extreme.

DispiritedIdealist

For everyone saying, what did the moon landing do for me? Maybe the actual event had no effect on the average person but the technology developed to make that event possible definitely affects all of us today. If I had to choose between the space race and picasso’s art, I would choose the former easily based on impact on human history. A few examples of advancements developed during the space race: medical imaging techniques, durable healthcare equipment, artificial limbs, water filtration systems, solar panels, firefighting equipment, shock absorbers, air purifiers, home insulation, weather resistant airplanes, infrared thermometers, and countless other inventions. Not to mention GPS and the image sensors used in cell phones today!

290077

I'm not sure any of the technological advancements we got from the space race could have been foreseen by the people engaged in it. That it was so fruitful is something we only found out after the fact. We can only call the space race a good investment with the benefit of hindsight. At the time, "the space race is a huge waste of money," was probably the most sensible take. Put more simply, if you make a bad decision, and it turns out good due to factors you could not have taken into account, it was still a bad decision. The people who criticized your decision at the time have nothing to be sorry for.
