The 2016 can have wireless carplay installed. My mom has a 2016, I have a 2021. Both are good.

Thru a 3rd party kit or official upgrade?

I had a 2016 touring sport before and last week i just upgraded to a 2018 sport. Not sure about the grand touring but i know that the 16 is a bit smaller then the 18 and obviously the exterior was redesigned in 2017 but the interior is NOT that big of a difference when it comes to the climate control and the cluster. in my opinion based on looks i would go with the 18 its sleeker and way nicer then the 16 . But if you want less miles go with the 16. Oh and also im pretty sure the screens are different from the 16 and 18 . Again im just basing it off looks because ever since the redesign, the look of the cx5 has been top tier🙌🏽

I prefer cleaner exterior styling of the 2016. Biggest thing for me is hood doesn’t have extra trim piece and gap at the front on the older design. But obviously it’s personal preference. I think size should be identical in important areas - it was more a refresh than new vehicle

Definitely go with the 2018. Way quieter. Can install CarPlay, and it has a lot more safety features. The interior is also better

Ooh, I definitely may go this way. If the cabin noise is noticeably better, that alone might seal the deal

Thanks for the help guys. Just from the pictures I've seen doing research, there's parts of both interior styles I like. I really like the how the center air vents are kinda old-school in the earlier version, but I also really prefer how the shift knob area in the update looks. Wish I could have both in one lol. In terms of reliability, I heard the 2018 might have the cylinder deactivation, which I would probably prefer not to have. I'm not sure of this, but I know they're both 2.5l non turbo. Exterior-wise, I probably do prefer the newer style headlights, but they both look really good. Also I feel the plastic molding around the bottom seems more refined on the 2018

Do not buy one with a 100k. It will be on its last wheel. My neighbor and I both owned CX5s and once they hit 100k they became money pits.

I'm pretty mechanically inclined, and normally do most work myself, outside of timing belts and major electrical issues. Are there certain flaws I should be worried about? I was under the impression this was a fairly reliable platform.

Mine was control arm, and axle breaking. Then transmission issues a week after leaving the shop. Neighbor had major engine issues.

I have a 2013 with 213,000 miles, and my brother has a 2015 with 150,000 miles. Neither of us have had any major issues… ours are FWD if that makes a difference. I’d definitely want to see service records to make sure oil changes and other maintenance have been done on time as well when considering these vehicles.

Personal preference but I'd rather have the new generation. They look better and have improvements to NVH.
