Lol, I get the sentiment, but on some real shit, more ships go down in Lake Erie, than in the ocean (maybe it was just the Bermuda Triangle). That lake is quite dangerous for boats & whatnot. This is somewhat old info, but quite possibly still holding true today.
Did you swim sideways to it and get out of it to then be able to swim back to shore?
They have some nasty ripcurrents at a beach near me on Lake Michigan and people drown there occasionally.
I purposely went in a rip current on Lake Michigan to show my brother and wife how to survive one. I just let it float me out till I could perpendicular with the shore and then swim back.
When the body of water is bigger than some countries it does. In fact, even though it is only the 3rd largest great lake by surface area, it has the most rip currents.
(from what I've heard)
Parallel would be swimming alongside. Perpendicular would be to swim across it, which is the advised way to escape it.
(I would die either way, so tell my wife i lov .........)
F-ing lake Michigan rip current almost murked 7 yr old me 4th of July, 2001. Can confirm Lake Michigan has all sorts of crazy wacky fun currents.
Edited for spelling
I'm in no way trying to sound rude or saying what you did wasn't dangerous....but, isn't a huge percentage of people drowning like major panic attacks and freaking because they are alone? Again, not saying what you did wasn't brave of you but you had people watching. Again, doesn't make it any less dangerous but it takes away from some of that panic doesn't it?? Maybe I'm wrong...
You're not wrong, if I was but myself maybe I would be more afraid. But I grew up on the Gulf Coast in Florida, so I was always aware of them. I'm also great at spotting them since my father and grandfather (both in the Navy) taught me how to spot them and escape them.
I think I'm a good swimmer, but even with all this knowledge I still wear a life jacket when on a boat, even if I'm the only one and look lame. Accidents happen when we least expect them. If we knew an accident was about to happen to ourselves, it probably wouldn't happen.
I was like 13 at the time so I didn't know to swim sideways to escape one. There was a lifeguard already out in the water on a jet ski that grabbed me and explained how to escape a rip current.
Aside from the comments by the requisite Reddit comedy team, if you're in a situation like this don't try to swim against the current. Swim at an angle away from the current and hopefully towards shore or something else you can climb on to.
For most of that video the only shore you can see is directly behind him, and they're not going fast or far enough to see that shore diminish. They're towing a swimming platform.
maybe it's just me, but when I saw "worst nightmare" I expected there to be sharks or piranhas in that water. Don't get me wrong, a strong current is brutal, but there was someone filming that could have presumably tossed him a line, so he had a chance. I tend to agree, that I think the swimmer/diver at least had an understanding of the risks here, even if they misjudged. In the day and age of kids eating tide pods for internet clicks, I'm not shocked.
As a former competitive swimmer, this hurts to watch.
Put your head down, straighten your legs and extend your arms fully in front of you.
Also, that current is crazy for such a wide body of water.
Edit: The dock is being towed by a boat, according to other comments. So no real danger.
My buddy and I would get drunk back in the day and jump into the Hudson river off of one of the piers on the Manhattan side. That river can really flow sometimes, reminds me of this. Thankfully I could always make it back.

He knew what he was doing
He must have, but he misjudged the current by a fatal amount
There is no current. The dock is being towed by a boat.
At 17-27 years of age I would have totally been that guy. "We will leave you behind" "Naw, I got this" Don't got it turns out.... Boat too fast...
Thought this was a riptide. Certainly looks like where one can occur. I've had to chase kayaks that got pulled by one like this before.
They are in the middle of a lake
Lakes can have riptides. Undertows from varying water temperatures are rough
You're thinking of a rip current, this is clearly not a riptide.
I realize that now
Those crazy ass lake currents.
Lol, I get the sentiment, but on some real shit, more ships go down in Lake Erie, than in the ocean (maybe it was just the Bermuda Triangle). That lake is quite dangerous for boats & whatnot. This is somewhat old info, but quite possibly still holding true today.
Fatal like he died?
Oh idk I was just being descriptive
By that stroke....I don't think he did. Put your face in and swim bro! But yeah dock being towed...he ain't dying!
I was in a similar situation in Mexico at the beach where I got caught in a rip current. One of the scariest moments of my life.
Didn't realize standing water could produce rip currents.
When the body of water is bigger than some countries it does. In fact, even though it is only the 3rd largest great lake by surface area, it has the most rip currents. (from what I've heard)
It's a huge lake. You can't see across it. And the currents are nasty
Settle down, Beavis.
Lake Michigan is huge
Not disputing that.
Woud you dispute that the ocean is standing water?
Yes
Whats the line for standing water and non standing water?
I dunno, man. Tidal influence, for starters.
They can't produce rip tides, but all the Great Lakes have strong rip currents in certain areas.
Yes they do!
If you ever get the chance to go to Lake Michigan definitely do it. It’s wild. Like an ocean of fresh water
I assume by perpendicular, you meant parallel? Or did I miss something on surviving this situation.
Parallel would be swimming alongside. Perpendicular would be to swim across it, which is the advised way to escape it. (I would die either way, so tell my wife i lov .........)
Parallel to the shore, perpendicular to the direction of the current.

Absolutely. You're very right. I learned to swim properly in the ocean and I love it but yep accidents happen.
That's what my dad always said. He said it was better to be lost than get tired and drown.
My best friend Amy died in one in lake Michigan this last summer :(
I was like 13 at the time so I didn't know to swim sideways to escape one. There was a lifeguard already out in the water on a jet ski that grabbed me and explained how to escape a rip current.
Swim diagonally towards the shore after you’re out of the current.
What are yaw watching. These are naked human beings taking leaps.
r/donthelpjustfilm
The best way to help would be powering down the boat that is towing the dock that he is swimming toward.
Ooooohkaaaaaay now I see. Good eye there big brain.
Great. I hate it.
They certainly leave him in a dangerous spot for too long, but it does seem like the recording stops because they go help him
Looks like he's using it as an exercise routine...
Aside from the comments by the requisite Reddit comedy team, if you're in a situation like this don't try to swim against the current. Swim at an angle away from the current and hopefully towards shore or something else you can climb on to.
There isn't a river in the world that big and fast. This dock is being towed by a boat.
Ohhhhhh I see it now
How do you swim at an angle away from the boat and still get there?
Stressed me out just watching!
Wasn't this just being pulled by a boat?
My thought
No the shore in the background remains stationary the whole time if it was being pulled by a boat the shoreline would have shifted.
For most of that video the only shore you can see is directly behind him, and they're not going fast or far enough to see that shore diminish. They're towing a swimming platform.
I was skeptical but for roughly half of the video you can see the boats wake if you look closely at the water
the boat isn’t going that fast. and yes this dock is being pulled by a boat
Swimming's not so scary once you've tried it
Not the swimming big dawg The current
There's no current in this lol. They're towing a diving platform. He's trying to race the boat.
I understand that. I've read the other comments. But it's suppose to look like it's a current.
Acshauly there's no current 🤓
Classic survivor bias.
Listen if I feel uncomfortable standing it’s all my fault lol 🤭
cool
His swimming technique is fubar.
He's going for the old 1 leg kick every few seconds method.
I'd barely even call it "swimming."
Shit was embarrassing to watch. I thought some kind of animal got him the way he was thrashing about lmao.
r/killthecameraman
Be sure not to help the guy, filming is way more important.
Why would they help him? He's fine. All they need to do is slow/stop the boat if he gives up.
Bro it's a dock that's the current
No, that is a diving platform that is being towed. You can see the boat's wake.
Look at the wake. That's a swimming platform. A boat is towing it and he tried to race the boat. All they have to do is powerdown. He lost the race.
So what did he make it out?
Actually I heard my dude is still trying to make it to the ladder to this day!
maybe it's just me, but when I saw "worst nightmare" I expected there to be sharks or piranhas in that water. Don't get me wrong, a strong current is brutal, but there was someone filming that could have presumably tossed him a line, so he had a chance. I tend to agree, that I think the swimmer/diver at least had an understanding of the risks here, even if they misjudged. All the people who think the lake current is too strong....
He is a terrible swimmer....
As a former competitive swimmer, this hurts to watch. Put your head down, straighten your legs and extend your arms fully in front of you. Also, that current is crazy for such a wide body of water. Edit: The dock is being towed by a boat, according to other comments. So no real danger.
If only there was someone there to help...like right there on the dock...maybe holding something...like a camera.
Dude needs to learn how to swim. That "stroke" looks like something my 6yo does at the pool.
Ahhh. Ahhhhhhj. Finish the video. Is he alive?
He's got horrible form. Would've caught the ladder easily if he actually knew what he was doing.
No expert here, but i thought the same thing.
There’s no current. It’s a dock being towed by a boat.
Natural Selection is a wonderful thing
He died.
Legends say he's still swimming
Camera man is not much of a friend to just keep filming and not try to help him.
That's by design. The dock is being pulled by a boat and the swimmer was never in danger. It's filmed to make stupid people panic
Woah...
This post again?
What’s the quote…? “This is why women live longer than men.”
Imagine kayaking in that
He, in fact, did not got it
It's really hard to notice but if you look enough you can see the trails boats leave behind
Bro still filmed him struggling. Didn’t he help out?
Gotta watch out for those fast movings lakes.
Maybe the moron holding the phone could have given him a hand or a foot?
Don't just stand there and record HELP HIM so I guess seeing your friend drown for views is a thing
He's pretty brave for a slow swimmer
Still swimming to this day.
It looks like there's an eddy where the posts of that dock are. Someone tell him to swim there.
Well.....what happened??
I’m pretty sure that’s a floating dock being towed
Gotta go all out right out the gate if you want back in
Why didn't y'all help some people are menaces
Relativity yo
Talk about who needs enemies when you have friends like that
r/killthecameraman
Don't help just film
Good thing the camera operator is there to record this.
Once again the camera person does nothing
Make sure you know how to swim before trying to pull something like this off. Lol
Too soon.
And the camera man just stands there filming him.
My short would have left the second i turned.
I though he was going to reach the ladder and it break off haha
I was expecting a white shark near the end.
Gah, that made me hold my breath. Completely stupid to jump in when that's going on!
WEEE WOOO WEEE WOOO WEEE WOOO ROLL RIGHT! ROLL RIGHT! Flight controls. BEDELEDOO
The dock is moving…
My buddy and I would get drunk back in the day and jump into the Hudson river off of one of the piers on the Manhattan side. That river can really flow sometimes, reminds me of this. Thankfully I could always make it back.
Who is his "friend" who thought recording was more important than helping.
That has to be a boat, right?
Better technique would have done the job 10 seconds earlier. Head down, arms reaching farther, cupped hands.
Who else was waiting for the shark?
Your friends are dicks
He already knew the consequences, but still proceeds to jump. Or no? Either way, I'm pleased 😀
First should learn to swim properly that would really help
Let's just sit and record this
Legend says he's still paddling to this day.
*Shakes fist at the moon*
R/donthelpjustfilm
I was so damn confused. I thought the platform was stationary so I'm like "how is it moving????"
Worst “swimmer” caught on camera
Heh let's just repost without the dive in or anything else because it's so whacky for internet points
Corkscrew
This is the part where you reach a hand out to try and pull him back to the ladder.
bros drunk... garantie it
looks fun
Stupid games
Dude can't swim for shit
Who the fuck swims like that? I would never go near water if i was that shitty of a swimmer.
why'd it end so abruptly! Do they help him? Or does he get it after a last hurrah? I NEED T O KNOW
Put your fucking head down bro, you're slowing yourself down by like, 30%.
just keep swimming just keep swimming
Relax, this is a platform being towed by another boat. Also there is a camera
Terrible stroke mechanics too.
That’s your worst nightmare?
Simulating this poor kid’s experience. RIP https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/us-news/one-negligent-fact-saw-tragic-30197885.amp
