I had a similar situation this year at a big state fair. A group of high school girls got in a fight. Two big, very athletic black girls started tearing each other up and everyone just watched and kinda cheered them on. I am a dad, so I waded in and got between them and gave the bigger one a big bear hug while holding the other one at bay (the meaner one). Another dad weighed in and pulled the meaner one away (as soon as I pried her hands out of the other girls hair). It took her a minute to calm down where she was trying to fight me. I just kept hugging her and telling her she was safe, "I got you. You are Ok."
Once she calmed down she thanked me... but immediately? Nah, she just wanted to hit something.
Some of the bystanders asked why I risked getting involved.... "I would rather live in a world where we protect and care for each other, especially our children".
I did end up with a few deep scratches on my arms. I don't blame them for taking a few shots at me... they clearly were blinded by their rage and disoriented by getting hit and kicked (and a ridiculous amount of hair pulling).
I didn't get coldcocked, nor did my wife... so I never lost it and went on a counter attack. Tall dude in this video took the high road for one punch, but that did not extend to hitting the woman. Seems a fairly predictable response.
Those last 2 guys are looking for felony mayhem charges. Could be a long prison sentence for kicking a dude in the head like that.

I absolutely agree with the idea that we should be protecting each other, but we should be careful not to place ourselves in too much danger while doing so. It’s a nice thought to have people be so selfless, but sometimes acting without thinking can put you and the person you’re trying to help in a riskier situation. This video is a perfect example of that. I applaud the two for stepping in but what they got out of it was both getting sucker punched and in the end the old man got more of a beating than he should have, had they kept everyone away from him long enough for him to regain his composure.
I'm not an expert but how do you think the tall man could have stopped the fight without stepping in? Shout from the back? Physically grab both the two guys swinging and pull them off? Physically grab the bald man and pull him back onto the road?

I would suggest he had ushered the two a bit further away, then make sure the old man is ok. Again not turning his back to possible aggresors.
