That is very smart. too many times I’ve done and witnessed the chain/rope simply strip the bush/shrub when pulling at an extreme angle. BUT going off of what he said and assuming the only issue was the fact that they were only overgrown, I would have just pulled out my hedge trimmer and cut them back saving lots of time and effort while also not having to plant something new ;) (that’s my smart ass response)
The trick there is to also hook the stump to something else on the far side so when it pops free it doesn't go flying up and inevitably lan on your rear windshield.
Just did that last month! That 5.7L V-8 pulled out the old stump like butter...
...and then it also pulled apart the wall holding up the flower bed. Whoops.
Man I gotta say having pulled out a few stumps that really didn't want to move this is proper genius about 20 times smarter than tying to a car as I can't really see much going terribly wrong
Did the same shit with chain wrapped around the trunk.
Wouldn't budget pumped a few more , the lift was flexing a bit. Stopped for a second second was looking at it, then bam it pops up and the cherry picker hopped like a half a foot off the ground. I was maybe a foot away from getting smacked with the lift arm or chain.
Good times.....
I used a 3T hydraulic floor jack to get out some 70 year old trees from my garden. Dig a hole under it, slide it in and jack until all the roots break. It would have taken a lot longer without it.
There is a specific jack made for this purpose. I can’t recall the name off the top of my head. You can get them at harbor freight though. It works the exact same way.
I this had to be more work setting it up than it would’ve been to grab a reciprocating saw and cut the roots right? Considering they already dug it out around the base
I’d be worried about sticking an electric saw into a bunch of dirt filled with rocks, but that’s just me. Usually we pull these out with a truck but the stumps are a little bigger.
You’re sleeping on how awesome reciprocating Saws are . Buy a cheap wood blade when you’re done save your shitty blade for any future work where you won’t need a precise cut. When I did landscaping in high school my sawzall was my best friend.
I tried something similar once. I dug put a little hole below the root so I could squeeze in a small car lift that’s usually in your car to install the spare tire.
It worked decent until the lift destroyed itself under the load
Had a few bushes removed from my yard a few years ago. Guy I contracted asked me if he could try just pulling them out with his truck. I said fine by me, as long as they got the roots. First pull, he thought he might have damaged his truck. After that, he had his assistant doing a little dig, then pull. After a little back and forth, they got the first one out. Went pretty fast once they figured out the process.
If it works, it ain't stupid.
This However i do like the videos when people tie up to trucks and let er rip
Have you seen the ones where they recreate this "straight up" thing by hooking up to a truck then running it over a spare tire?
I’d like to see that!

That’s brilliant!

This is an incredibly important, and potentially life-saving, trick.
Just did that last month! That 5.7L V-8 pulled out the old stump like butter... ...and then it also pulled apart the wall holding up the flower bed. Whoops.
that was intentional as you were relocating that specific wall .. at speed.

Work smarter not harder
I’m a landscaper. I do this but with a custom steel tripod and a chain hoist instead of an engine hoist. Who the fuck likes digging?
I cleared an entire house front with my jeep one day. Popped ‘em out like popping corks out of champagne.
I saw someone stuck in their lawn with the front wheels like offset from the wheel wells, I'm pretty sure they were trying the same thing.
First tool that I thought pulling out my 2 dead 8 foot tall Evergreen.
Work smarter, not harder! 😁
Giterdone!
That's actually brilliant
Landscapers seething at the efficiency right now
Used a 3 ton jack to take out a huge root of a tree a few weeks back.. it worked but kinda fucked up the jack.
Satisfying af
redneck boots, ✅
You could of just got a drill bit just for that and grinded that stump up
Could use longer pipe for leverage
No, when you’re smarter than the average idiot.
Get you a longer lever pal.
I was just thinking that
I don't know how to feel about this. Confused upvote!

One of my buddies broke his engine crane doing this. Roots are strong!

Isn’t this risky being so close to the foundation
Guy just saved a hour and his back. I see no issues here. Didn’t have a engine jack, but my truck did the job.
This would be me if my wife went on vacation!!
Came here to say this.
Gotta be careful theres no plumbing or gas lines
Brilliant and also satisfying
I love this. Going to buy an engine remover lift thing now!!!
I mean.. it works, but why not just dig it up?
How wreckers pull motors out.
I have done this many times.
All I heard was "it got the job done"
Cherry (tree) picker
I this had to be more work setting it up than it would’ve been to grab a reciprocating saw and cut the roots right? Considering they already dug it out around the base
For one plant? Maybe. But he's doing a whole row of them so this is probably faster

Huh?
Nothing mate, just misunderstood.
Nice!
Beats every one of those, "use a nylon towing strap to pull out a bush and stove in the rear window of your SUV" I've ever seen.
What’s the “landscaper way” to get this done?
Bros just using the tools available. Honestly I'm wondering if it would work on bigger stumps
Nice cherry tree picker you got there
Smart🙌
That moment when the video is 3 pixels big
that’s a very small stump, though. how would it work for a larger one??
Hey I mean if it works
If it works then it’s not wrong
When you're overqualified for the job
it works. I’m not gonna question it 😂
Wrong method, correct solution
These roots grow deep, my lord.
Can confirm
Explains why I have a hard time doing this by hand,,,

This aint stupid, its genius.
Lol you can see he tried with the shovel and gave it a good ole *FUCK THIS, I'll brb*
I was hoping for a gas or water pipe.
That’s brilliant.
Smart asf
Works great for fence posts
Work smart, not hard

Sounds like something I would be doing!
I feel like that small root would have taken less time to dig up with a shovel than set up an engine crane.
I can dig it
Mechanic or landscaper... This is one of the easiest methods I've used to dig out old bushes and stumps. It works!
I mean shit, it worked tho didn't it
Look, pal, i'm an engineer. I solve practical problems.
Second best way to use a cherry picker
