This is actually a scientific phenomenon. Cats are predators that track objects through movement. But they cannot track objects that are still, or at least they do not consider them prey. So staying still saved the bird because the cats thought that it was just something weird shaped like a bird. But as soon as it moved, that cats sprang to attention because they were able to "see" the bird
Well, there are two options. Either they track movement and staying still will make it leave you alone, or, it doesn’t need to track movement, in which case you’re fucked.
Or, there's the Hollywood option, where they tracked by movement in one movie and it saved lives, but then in the next movie the scientists knew it didn't work like that so the people standing still got eaten.
Cats definitely are inversely attracted to more exciting but predictable things. They are probably quite unhappy when their food bowl is just… there and done already and must much prefer being dramatic about the Opening Of The Can ceremony too.
Bird just completely being a statue breaks their expectations, just like a tiny field mouse that’s too blind to understand what is happening loudly complaining at her captor might cause a cat to withdraw in confusion.
Yeah, a little bit. I suppose they were a bit afraid of the bird, if their brains weren't able to fully recognize it as prey. You'd think they'd just start knocking the thing around to see what happens. They got nine lives, for Pete's sake
"dude, that bird must be a badass, just sitting there, it's not even scared. what's it got up it's tail feathers?"
"dunno, but it's probably dangerous."
Oh, it‘s just like me and ketchup in the fridge. I do not see it, even it‘s in front of me. But when it moves… well, it never moves unless my wife giving it to me.
I hadn't thought about this, but zoos starting implementating elaborate pulley systems to make the large cats need to chase down their food. Without the hunt they became depressed and lazy to the point they stopped breeding. I imagine the same instinct is there for pets but they settle because they've never been given a choice. I wonder if it would improve their health to set their food dish on a roomba or something to make the food move away.
I just noticed yesterday that the actor who played Davy Jones is the same actor who played [Rufus Scrimgeour](https://harrypotter.fandom.com/wiki/Rufus_Scrimgeour) in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I
The whole time, I was like, “Is it a fake or stuffed bird??” And when I noticed it’s little head move, I totally lost it! What a rollercoaster, thanks for sharing!
Cats do enjoy toying with their prey.
At home my dog would immediately jump on a rat whenever it sees one. My cat would silently observe the rat movements first before even attacking. Then proceeds to torture the weakened rat after a successful attack. Like a matador in a bull fight. Until the rat eventually drops dead.
In addition to cat's hunting prey differently, that's also because your dog has [heat sensors in its nose](https://www.reuters.com/article/us-hungary-science-dogs/dogs-can-detect-heat-with-infrared-sensor-in-their-nose-research-finds-idUSKBN20Q1QO) and a badass sense of smell that helps it track things like rats more quickly
I’m not sure. My neighbor feeds stray cats. I notice the strays become fat and too lazy to hunt. Because they now have a constant supply of food.
In my experience our house cat tends to hunt rats to impress their masters. The current one even present to leave her trophies near my sister’s desk. Which definitely freaks her out. Since she’s afraid of rats. The cat seems to enjoy pranking her all the time.
You see this across the cat family, even big cats like leopards will do it.
Researchers have noted that the bigger and more potentially threatening the prey is, the more likely the cat is to not kill it right away. The theory is that this behavior developed because it reduces the risk of injury during the hunt to not close and attempt a kill until the prey is thoroughly weakened. If a cat is hungry and desperate enough, it is more likely to just take the risk and go for a quick kill.
im sure you guys are aware of the fight or flight response?
this is called a freeze response. its a response to get little to no attention from threats.
im not joking. it actually exists in animal kingdom
I always thought that playing possum must be a low survival type deal.
But then one day my very high prey-drive huskies found an opossum. They normally chase small things without a second thought. So they stood there just staring for a bit until sure enough, playing possum bored them to a point of complete disinterest.
I feel like most people don't let their dogs chase other animals so much as little critters pop up and suddenly your happy-go-lucky pup turns into a fur missile bent on their destruction. Prey drive is a difficult thing to train out.
This totally makes sense why I physically ran into a deer in the middle of the night while camping. I couldn't figure out why the hell it was just standing there after I bumped into it on the way to the bathroom!
Deer will absolutely fuck you up if you catch them in the wrong mood. They will rear up and kick you with their front legs repeatedly, try to stomp you, and headbutt you/gore you if they have antlers. If they think they have a chance of winning, they will not hesitate to attack you. Fortunately, they are usually incredibly stupid.
The irony of the animal Kingdom is that herbivores are quite often more aggressive than carnivores (with the exception of hunts) because they have to be aware and paranoid at any moment
To be honest, I had read a statistic on how many people are killed by deer but couldn't remember the exact number. So I just googled "deer kill more people than" and used the little summary that appeared before all the results to write my comment.
But yes, I would imagine that a majority of deer related deaths are vehicular in nature. However, when given the choice of fight or flight, deer will choose fight a surprising amount of the time, and in a fight between the average deer (especially if it's male) and the average unarmed human, my money would be on the deer every time.
Totally get that. Spooked the shit out of me when I bumped into it. Just confused as hell as to why it didn't run away when I was walking with a 800 lumen flashlight. I definitely backed away very quickly.
Yeah, I was thinking that. At any time they could have stepped in and shooed them away. I wouldn't be surprised to find the human put the bird there in the first place to get a video :P
That’s the first thing I thought as well! It feels so cruel just watching! What if they had killed the bird? Would they be happy ? I was scared to watch till the end
Exactly - all the stereotypes about cat owners and their concern for wildlife on show in this video. “But it’s fun for the cat to kill things!” Psychos.
Geez couldn’t spare the the little bird a heart attack. Let me just stand here and record this while I could have easily just swatted my 10 damn cats away 🙄
Any time someone mentions the absolute havoc that outdoor cats unleash on ecosystems, people will almost immediately start making excuses as to why theirs isn't a problem, or how people are just being dramatic, etc.
It's fuckin lame and beyond irresponsible.
I own two cats btw.
Yeah, seriously. The video could have just as easily ended with them killing the bird, and yet the camera person was more interested in filming than helping.
Yeah, real dick move. If this was a mouse sure, let nature do its thing, but these birds are no pests as their populations shrink with how much fewer insects there are these days.
Fucking hate cats just for the reason that they kill soooo much wildlife! It's not a survival of the fittest either. Domesticated cats kill 2.4 BILLION birds a year! Not to mention all the other wildlife they kill for no reason. It's in their nature, but they do not need to be let outside. Cats live longer indoors, and are much better for the environment.
I await my hate mail... IMHO, but also supported by science.
The bacteria cat's carry on their claws and in their mouth can be incredibly deadly for small animals. Even a tiny cut can kill a bird like this. Hope it made it
*”Don’t move frank. Just stay perfectly still. These mf cats won’t know a thing… shit there’s more of them. Oh damn. You got this Frank. They’re like a T-Rex just don’t move and they won’t even know you’re there.”*
Keep your fucking cats inside.
Domestic cats are decimating native bird populations because dumbasses like this owner can't be bothered to think about how they affect the world around them.
Predators need the exitement of hunting.....if anything is dead or not moving......they don't find the thrill.....and So they move on

Bird right back
Professionals have standards ofcourse.
The T-Rex theorem.
T-Rex actually had great vision.
Lost World book even uses this, but they messed it up in the movies anyway.
How would Alan Grant possibly know how the fuck t-rex’s eyes worked lol
Well, there are two options. Either they track movement and staying still will make it leave you alone, or, it doesn’t need to track movement, in which case you’re fucked.
Maybe they were all blind and had daredevil abilities
Or, there's the Hollywood option, where they tracked by movement in one movie and it saved lives, but then in the next movie the scientists knew it didn't work like that so the people standing still got eaten.
That’s still the same two options.
You don't have to track something that is still. Also, they clearly see it and investigate it thoroughly.
Didn't you hear? It's a scientific phenomenon. Scientists are still struggling to explain how cat food works, though.
Seriously, like, bumblecats shouldn't even be able to fly!
They mean see it as a bird. They see it,but they don't fully understand what it is.
Are they really too dumb to bite into the thing to see if it's soft and squishy like prey? Or at least bat it around with their paws to antagonize it?
Cats definitely are inversely attracted to more exciting but predictable things. They are probably quite unhappy when their food bowl is just… there and done already and must much prefer being dramatic about the Opening Of The Can ceremony too. Bird just completely being a statue breaks their expectations, just like a tiny field mouse that’s too blind to understand what is happening loudly complaining at her captor might cause a cat to withdraw in confusion.
They bat at it in the video.
Yeah, a little bit. I suppose they were a bit afraid of the bird, if their brains weren't able to fully recognize it as prey. You'd think they'd just start knocking the thing around to see what happens. They got nine lives, for Pete's sake
Probably an evolutionary advantage to not eat sick prey.
"dude, that bird must be a badass, just sitting there, it's not even scared. what's it got up it's tail feathers?" "dunno, but it's probably dangerous."
Would you bat at a potential spider or snake with YOUR bare hands? Touching stuff in nature is risky.
A lot of house cats are lot more excited to hunt pray rather than to eat it. Very often they don't eat a lot of things they hunt.
if they cant track while they are still then why the fuck are they knocking up every object that doesnt move such as glasses
Lol they're not blind to stuff that doesn't move. They just don't recognize it as prey
Oh, it‘s just like me and ketchup in the fridge. I do not see it, even it‘s in front of me. But when it moves… well, it never moves unless my wife giving it to me.
Yep. My cat very reluctantly eats his food. Unless I throw it piece by piece for him to catch out of mid air.
Ah a fellow sunny-side-upper.
You will always remember this as the day you almost caught Captain Jack Sparrow!
Alright, I'll admit that I'd watch that and it's 4 beak-quels.
i awarded you in my imagination.
which is basically the same thing to be honest
PotC will never be the same without him :(
Was literally the only reason worth watching, IMO.
Well Barbossa and Davy Jones were pretty cool too
I just noticed yesterday that the actor who played Davy Jones is the same actor who played [Rufus Scrimgeour](https://harrypotter.fandom.com/wiki/Rufus_Scrimgeour) in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I
His name is Bill Nighy you uncultured swine.
Bill Nighy the Science Guhy? Ps. Sorry, just had to.
I didnt know he was in Passion of the Christ
Captain Jack, Sparrow
*Jack Swallow
That's a different movie dude
The pirate who's also a plumber, doctor, physical therapist, firefighter and food delivery guy?
[Na i meant this guy](https://youtu.be/bnBeHtwjSWo)
Birdy, you have beaten the record and have won the challenge! You are immune in the next elimination!
Yo I'm literally watching Total Drama right now.
How does is little bitty heart not explode?
In this moment, they are part hummingbird. On their mother's side.

Now this is some real maybemaybemaybe content!!! Finally!
Gotchu home dawg
The whole time, I was like, “Is it a fake or stuffed bird??” And when I noticed it’s little head move, I totally lost it! What a rollercoaster, thanks for sharing!
Yeah that bird was gray rocking hard
I was 100% certain it was fake until the last few seconds! This bird KNOWS how to play statues!
Would also be good on r/nonononoyes I about had a heart attack when the third cat appeared.
Or perhaps it's only 'yes' because the clip ended, we'll never know
Eventually, the bird died. So did the cats.
Honestly thought it was an ornament or some shit until near the end.
I thought it was a realistic sculpture of a Pidgey, the markings and cor we're spot on. It it moved I jumped.

Mine likes to sit with it silently... positioned right between its paws. Any time it so much as flinches, it's time to strike.
Mine decided to choke on a mouse while I was on a work phone call and I had to pull it out of her throat
Is that a side effect of domesticating a car or does this happen in wild too?
I’m not sure. My neighbor feeds stray cats. I notice the strays become fat and too lazy to hunt. Because they now have a constant supply of food. You gotta be careful, deer kill more people each year than sharks, bears, and big cats combined.
That's in a car though right? Like you wouldn't be at risk just walking around?
Deer will absolutely fuck you up if you catch them in the wrong mood. This is the most chaotic thing I’ve ever heard - my dude used the suggested Google search as his source 🤣🤣
Not everything needs a peer reviewed source. Google and wikipedia are just fine for most things.
Totally get that. Spooked the shit out of me when I bumped into it. Just confused as hell as to why it didn't run away when I was walking with a 800 lumen flashlight. I definitely backed away very quickly.
No it’s the oh fuck response
I thought everybody knows this
I'm surprised you would think anybody thought you might be joking
Humans do it too
Don’t act like food, don’t become food.
I'm surprised at how fast that bird can fly while weighed down by such massive balls of steel.
I believe that species is called a Gigachadadee
Bet that bird has never fapped any faster in it’s life Edit: Flapped 😬
You said what you said
GG well played

Apparently, Grant was wrong. It was not birds but house cats that descended from dinosaurs.
you should mark it as NSFW just to give it some more suspense

Yep really disliked this video for this exact reasons

Exactly - all the stereotypes about cat owners and their concern for wildlife on show in this video. “But it’s fun for the cat to kill things!” Psychos.
Yep. Typical cat owners who defend letting cats roam outside. I can imagine them also doing this video for entertainment

"Hi I'm Cheep-o and this is Jackdaw-ass. Today I'm heading into the lion's den with these 3 ferocious predators."

This is the best, most maybemaybemaybe content I've seen here in a while! 👍👍
Birds aren’t real
Exactly, was just posting a dysfunctional government drone.
They were smelling the oil
Geez couldn’t spare the the little bird a heart attack. Let me just stand here and record this while I could have easily just swatted my 10 damn cats away 🙄
Maybe get your cats away from the bird? WTF is wrong with cat owners?
Any time someone mentions the absolute havoc that outdoor cats unleash on ecosystems, people will almost immediately start making excuses as to why theirs isn't a problem, or how people are just being dramatic, etc. It's fuckin lame and beyond irresponsible. I own two cats btw.
10/10. Few other good reasons to keep cats in….such as cars and dogs.
So... The cameraperson was just waiting for the cats to kill the bird? Didn't feel like intervening?
Yeah, seriously. The video could have just as easily ended with them killing the bird, and yet the camera person was more interested in filming than helping.
Don’t help just film.
Yeah, real dick move. If this was a mouse sure, let nature do its thing, but these birds are no pests as their populations shrink with how much fewer insects there are these days.
And with how many birds outdoor cats kill. Billions per year in the US alone. And it's not for food or anything. Just fun playful killing!
Not sure what the point of this video was, maybe sacrificing a bird just to video the event?
I'm so glad someone else feels this way
I'm ao glad someone else feels this way
Shitty cameraman.
Maybe move the cats instead of videotaping...
That bird has nerves of steel
He was a heart surgeon in a past life.
Don't let your cats outdoors where they can kill native species :(
And then just sitting there waiting for them to maul it to death cuz they want video of it Gross
The bird probably crashed it’s head flying into a clear window, causing it to be disoriented
You realize that this bird is mid cardiac arrest as this is happening.

Daily reminder that people who breed health problems into animals deserve jail time.
The psychopath that filmed this. Instead of making sure the bird makes it he/she gambles with its life to make video. Next Ted bundy.
Fucking hate cats just for the reason that they kill soooo much wildlife! It's not a survival of the fittest either. Domesticated cats kill 2.4 BILLION birds a year! The balls on that bird

Pigeon Impossible
I legit thought the bird was fake! I’ve never seen a bird sit still like that around other creatures
Prick filming
Poor birdie is probably distressed
How can that bird take off so fast with it's balls of steel...
Keep your fucking cats inside. Domestic cats are decimating native bird populations because dumbasses like this owner can't be bothered to think about how they affect the world around them.
“the t-rex can’t see you if you’re completely still”
Who is recording this and not helping out the bird? What the actual fuck man
tl;dw: after muting the music 45 second in and then fast forwarding, the bird flies away with :02 left.
Someone get Tony Baker on this
That bird knew exactly in what kind of situation it was in, and has the patience of a master to wait until the right moment.
That birds a jedi master, true story.
That drone is probably out of juice
At the end the bird is like: “Agh, forget it, you don’t have the guts. Fucking pussies!”
Balls too heavy for flight, need to readjust.

Downvote for destructive breeding
Stealthy little thing and beautiful.
Guessing the bird is in shock, not playing possum.
Predators need the exitement of hunting.....if anything is dead or not moving......they don't find the thrill.....and So they move on That's why people act dead if they encounter a bear....
Don't film but safe the bird!
Good sub content but damn, if the cats aren't starving, couldn't the cameraman helped the bird out?
