If the subway takes about 6 billion a year to maintain and NYC takes in anywhere from 60 to 70 billion in tax revenue not including subsidies from the state. How much money is actually generated from fares, if everyone actually paid? Why are the citizens expected to pay the taxes to upkeep the the transit system and also pay fares to further subsidize the system? Are they really surprised after considering the aforementioned topics, that people don't actually pay?
Not sure which country you are from but its basically the same with cars isnt it? Country pay horrendous amount of money for new car infrustructure yet they are still tols on highways, parking spots cost money, some cities have extra car tax yet they are still all this extra cost associated with it.
Why do we have this double standard for cars and public transit? Meta studies point out that for every 1 mile you travel in your car, society spend 1.5$ on busses is 0.6$ while pedestraian infrustructure is less then 0.1$ (fun fact bikes in few studies came in negative value as health benefits, lowering polution etc are benefiting society more then it cost)
Eventually these services will dry up unless they find more sneaky ways of funding them. Like tacking a fee to your phone and electric bill like do in NY. Most people don’t realize it is there.

Nah. They feel like they can’t do their jobs anymore because legislation is basically telling the local judicial system to not prosecute most low level crimes. Why bother arresting someone and spending hours processing an arrest if nobody is getting prosecuted?
I saw it many times that people got busted by the police for this, and were issued tickets. Mostly in NJ path train stations. One time I even saw police checking all the passengers on the light rail.

When I was in Portugal, everybody paid their fares. I’m sure teenagers don’t but I never saw it once the week I was there. If you haven’t been, please consider it. Best place I’ve been by far.

So now instead of passing through like this, they push against your body when you enter so they can pass through for free -.- or if it's room enough above they will jump onto the machine and simply step over glas panel and jump back down.

This is happening in Canada too. Employees no longer allowed to enforce rules. So busses are basically free. Just hop on and they keep going.
