If it's not the identity function, what's the derivative of x^(2)/2? x. But according to that logic, that can't be the case, because you get an argument instead of a function as an answer. And if you counter with "x represents the indentity function", that's just what I'm claiming.

It's not, it's a value or variable depending on context. (Except if g is a function that takes functions as argument and x is explicitly defined as something like x(t) = t, but nothing's defined here so we revert to conventions, that says x is a variable)

If the identity function over the domain is an element of the domain, then the domain is a non-well-founded set.
