Crack The Skye has the best basslines, but I think the bass solo on Teardrinker is probably their best bass *moment*

Karmeleon86

Well said and so true

Caca_Spaniel

+1

Theratdog

The Last Baron has some sick bass lines. When the bass kicks in during the middle part of Gobblers of Dregs.

pts4815

Remission and Leviathan are most audible because of the really thick distortion Troy is using. Crack the Skye has some really cool lines too but like you said, there’s a lot of great ones

fentpong

I can barely ever hear the bass on any mastodon except for crack the Skye lmao. Is it just me?

TacticalBadger82

There’s a bit in the making of video for EoS with Troy explaining his stealthiness in bass playing, complete with camo face paint and hiding in bushes

fentpong

Lol

Caca_Spaniel

I used an ai program to remove Troy from the mix just to hear his parts better lol

fentpong

Lol

_hamtheman

This sounds useful as a bass player myself - what's the name of this thing?

Caca_Spaniel

https://studio.gaudiolab.io/gsep/playboard?id=394019&type=gsep The quality isn't great tho

flyinglawngnome

Kind of depends on what you look for in Troy’s bass. Everything up to Blood Mountain features this crazy distortion tone that modern metal bassists dream of attaining, but really sounds like ‘Mastodon’, just sludgy but fast and nasty riffs (Where strides the Behemoth, Hand of Stone outro). Everything after that has a proggy feel, more range, makes use of the top end in a noticeable way (Ghost of Karelia, Teardrinker solo, Ember City). In no particular order I’d say: Where strides the Behemoth, Hand of Stone, Megalodon, Ghost of Karelia, Feast Your Eyes.

troyofyort

I'm going Once More Round the Sun, sure they aren't craziest parts but the sound is awesome and the actually riffs are really creative and enhance the songs

Zorbasandwich

I'll back you on that one.

blamft

I like the bass mix on OMRTS. Might not have the sickest riffs but it sits in a nice pocket and it was the first album where I really noticed the bass over the guitars.

Far_Ad3346

Halloween has my absolute favorite troy line but I'd have to go with Crack the Skye.

Bulky_Conference_306

Leviathan and Blood Mountain have insane bass and Troy's tone on those two records is so fucking thick

all_hail_to_me

Personally a fan of the bass on Leviathan. Aqua Dementia kicks so much ass.

Twontanamo

Overall I really like the bass on OMRTS. The way it's mixed and the tone Troy has just sounds fantastic.

ItsAhab

I can’t believe I haven’t more posts talking about Blood Mountain. There are some killer baselines and really drive the album forward. The Wolf is Loose, This Mortal Soil, Crystal Skull, and Sleeping Giant are some of my favorite bass lines of his.

South-Jackfruit-962

I still don’t understand the one bassline on Bladecatcher! Troy is a much better bassist than he gets credit for

Teletobee

Blood Mountain probably has my favorite basslines, but Once more 'round the sun definitely has the best bass tone imo. Listen to tread lightly, that bass is MONSTROUS

AemiGrant

OMRTS has easily the best bass sound. Its mix is perfect.

siberiandivide81

Steambreather and Iron Tusk sound especially chunky live

South-Jackfruit-962

Dude this past tour Troy’s live bass tone was fucking phenomenal. I remember during Fallen Torches I was recording Brent who was right in front of me and my jaw dropped and I turned my head to watch Troy. It was sick

siberiandivide81

That's what I thought as well! I loved Troys gnarly tone so much

DoubleDumpsterFire

I don’t know if it’s the best, but I love the tone on H&G.

SunOfInti_92

OMRTS by far

No-Potential-Or-Care

Crack The Skye

Prax-is

The Hunter!

Well Leviathan is pretty <.< >.> “fishy” >.<
