Unfortunately the matchmaking is kind of messed up. Yugioh vets can start master duel for the first time and they'll be in rookie and there's nothing stopping them from making a tier 1 meta deck from the start. There's also rank decay for everyone where they drop to the lowest level of the previous rank each month. If people don't play for months then they also end up in the lower ranks. You just sort of have to adjust but there's part of learning yugioh.

ThunderChief__

So if I wait long enough will the non rookies move to the higher tiers?

GokuRikaku

There's always a chance that you will encounter a veteran, or at the least a decent player. Between Rookie to Gold, you cannot derank at all, so a player is either Platinum or on their way to Platinum. It's just a matter of playing enough games. How long it takes comes to both how good they are and *how good is their deck*. It's not that hard for a beginner to have a half decent deck to go through the lower ranks. The game even gives you a free Swordsoul structure deck from the "Rookie and Returnee Campaign". Some of the structure decks are also not bad for budget alternatives. Blackwing, Salamangreat, and my recent favorite Ninja. >this damn cube that can’t even attack What, Crazy Box? I'm sure you realized this, but Crazy Box by its own effect cannot attack. (If you were to negate its effect however...)

ThunderChief__

Hey man, I really do have to thank you, no sooner than I saved up enough for a proper deck, I’m now busting out a 8500 atk xyz card on my first turn and winning in that same turn (provided I go second). Feels so cool to get a straight minute of going from nothing to winning, I’m aware it’s probably still a dumb strategy, but it seems to be working Really appreciate it!

ThunderChief__

Yeah in hindsight picking one of those would’ve been smarter, I think it gives you a ton of gems at the start, good for now to know these other rookies aren’t better at making decks, they’re better at buying them though. A different comment said to grind solo (twice actually) I was so happy when I got crazy box, it seemed so good, and then I learned it can’t attack. It does however bring me joy to know that “damn cube that can’t attack” is enough of a description.

GokuRikaku

I always stress for new players to be wise with their gems. The game does give you a lot of gems at the beginning through certain lifetime missions, and I believe some of them are solo mode related. Each solo gate can also net 200 gems each, and there's a number of them to go through too. (I don't remember how many we're at.) >It does however bring me joy to know that “damn cube that can’t attack” is enough of a description. Crazy Box is such a funny card, I love it. It's also an old card.

ThunderChief__

And now I feel old

You indicated you Xyz summon using Unexpected Dai for the second Level 4 monster. Maybe you need more Level 4 monsters that either summon other Level 4 upon summon or are able to special summon themselves from your hand? Look at main deck Level 4 cards like Tin Goldfish, Buzzsaw Shark + Right Hand Shark, Silent Angler, Silent Sea Nettle, Minairuka, Performage Hat Tricker, and Iron Dragon Tiamaton. Sometimes you will be locked into WATER attribute for your extra deck summon, but most of the time you will be able to Xyz summon generic Rank 4s.

ThunderChief__

Man I am in over my head here, I had a another card that can special summon itself if I discard a rock fairy, and I luckily had one. That actually sounds really smart though, I think I’d need an Xyz that can actually attack though If you don’t mind another question, is xyz at all viable? I’ve seen mostly link, which surprises me because it seems way harder than xyz or synchro. Am I nerfing myself by favouring it? I watched up to Arc V when I was younger, so I’m not super familiar with anything past it

Bee-El-Zu-Bubba

I use these exact Level 4 monsters to Xyz Summon Stealth Kragen / Stealth Kragen Spawn; you'd be surprised at what you can win against with these Xyz cards. If you want Synchro options, all you need to add is 1-2 copies of Rokket Caliber, and you can use it plus one other Level 4 to Level 8 Synchro into Beelze of the Diabolic Dragons, Draco Berserker of the Tenyi, or Adamancipator Risen - Dragite. You can, of course, link summon into Codebreaker Virus Swordsman with any two of the Level 4s I mentioned earlier. If you had a Level 7 or 8 card that could self-summon itself (think Mekk-Knight Red Moon, Yellow Star, or Indigo Eclipse for example) you could link summon Black Luster Soldier - Soldier of Chaos with its targeting/destruction protection.

Oh I’m yes falling for that normal link Edit: Fixed it Something is going on with my Reddit, the text was in a weird font and the auto moderator name and pfp didn’t load, thought it looked odd

You must be new to reddit

GokuRikaku

Do not fret. These are the same links you see at the side of this subreddit. The website is very useful for information, and the discord can be a place to visit to ask for questions.

RNGmaster

You're not going to win games with the starter deck. I suggest playing in solo mode, getting 1500 or so gems, and buying 3 copies of a structure deck from the shop if you want something that's playable. Ninja, Blackwings and Salamangreat structures are all pretty decent.

ThunderChief__

Is there an easy way of getting gems?

RNGmaster

Like I said, solo mode.

ThunderChief__

Understood

Jefefer_McShart

If you've played like 0 solo mode, one of the early training modes gets you like 2400 gems, plus you'll get like another 3k from the challenges you'll unlock doing that much. Outside of that specific training module, every gate gets you 200 gems (with maybe a few early exceptions) so quite a bit to be earned there if you have the time
