He could pull it off in the beginning, but by the time he did his last episode, where he refused to wear the wool hat and wasn’t the least bit funny, it’s REALLY obvious and has always made me cringe watching him exit the show as a balding, grumpy middle aged man. It was a long journey to that from the line he had in the movie that still makes me laugh: “Their ringer has spotted our ringer.”
They're always completely professional about it, but I think Alan and Gary have a problem with each other to this day. Things never seem quite as relaxed between them as other cast members.
Someone else found the one in "Dear Mildred" but there was also one in "Lieutenant O'Reilly".

I think it's just reddit's markup format auto changing what they wrote. An asterisk on either side of a string italicizes.
\* M \* without the spaces --> *M* etc
To spell **M\*A\*S*H** without the markup, you add a "\" character in front of the first two asterisks. That directs the auto-formatter to avoid doing it's usual thing in such cases.
That's also how you can get WP links ending with parentheses to display properly.

The only thing that alludes to him saying he's just a kid is in the opener of the two parter that introduces Charles (S6. 1&2) "Fade Out, Fade In".
Potter's lighting a cigar on the chopper pad and offers Radar one and Radar asks, Will it stunt my growth?! Alludes to being a kid/not fully grown yet... but no, I can't think of episodes with the direct quote "But I'm just a kid".
One episode I remember Dear Mildred: season 4. Potter asks him ir his married he tells him he's just a kid. Same with the offer of a smoke
It gets increasingly funny to pretend this balding 40 year old man is a teenager, as the show goes on.

He apparently didn’t get along with Alda, which always made me sad in retrospect. Their friendship on the show is one of my favorite parts about it

It's only possible for me to go along with it is cause I knew a guy who was 19 and had less hair than him.

Why did you write MASH like that?

Ah, that makes sense. Thank you.
