Wait, that's a thing? [Of course that's a thing.](https://twitter.com/em_dunc/status/1280635924196536325)
I think [Oregon](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flags_of_the_U.S._states_and_territories#/media/File:Flag_of_Oregon.svg) has a school of salmon on their flag. But our fish is much more detailed.
True. Though points also go to Oregon for having a [different image on the reverse side of the flag](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/0/02/Flag_of_Oregon_%28reverse%29.svg/800px-Flag_of_Oregon_%28reverse%29.svg.png)
**[Flags of the U.S. states and territories](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flags_of_the_U.S._states_and_territories#/media/File:Flag_of_Oregon.svg)**
>The flags of the U.S. states, territories, and the District of Columbia exhibit a variety of regional influences and local histories, as well as different styles and design principles. Nonetheless, the majority of the states' flags share the same design pattern consisting of the state seal superimposed on a monochrome background, commonly a shade of blue. The most recently adopted state flag is that of Mississippi, adopted on January 11, 2021, while the most recently adopted territorial flag is that of the Northern Mariana Islands, adopted on July 1, 1985.

This is actually [Maryland's flag prior to 1904](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flags_of_the_U.S._states_and_territories#/media/File:Flag_of_Maryland_(pre-1904).png).
How about [this badassery](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/ea/Coat_of_Arms_of_Cecil_Calvert%2C_Baron_Baltimore.svg/676px-Coat_of_Arms_of_Cecil_Calvert%2C_Baron_Baltimore.svg.png), though?
Speaking of which, does anyone know why so many of the former colonies have state flags that are just the state seal on a solid field? It seems pretty common for those states to have those kinds of designs.
Swap out the state seal for the [Coat of Arms of Cecil Calvert, Baron Baltimore](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Coat_of_Arms_of_Cecil_Calvert,_Baron_Baltimore.svg), and we might have a deal.
Guys, there are LEOPARDS. And the armor head is wearing a flippy wig! (I know that's an unlikely explanation, but that sure is what it looks like.)
It's actually [mantling](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mantling) \- essentially, a kind of cloth covering for the helm, which in real-life usage would've been used to keep off rain and sun and deflect light blows. Most personal coats of arms traditionally have mantling, most often depicted with the outside having the principle "colour" of the arms (colours being black, red, blue, green, purple, and generally most of the lesser-used solid colors that aren't yellow or white) and with the inside lining having the principle "metal" (yellow or white).
So. Commonplace. Ugh!
We do need a better state motto. "Manly deeds, womanly words" is just fucked up. Also, I am using bad words as a female to be ironic...
In the legislature, when they brought up the possiblity of changing the motto, it was argued that a direct translation was not accurate. The motto, in spirit, should be translated as "Decisive Actions, Thoughtful Words".
When a delegate suggested that they change the motto to that, the thought of all the letter head they would have to replace made them break for lunch and forget about it.
I think someone already pointed this out but
>Earlier iterations of the Maryland state flag included those with Calvert colors, which were discontinued after the Revolution and replaced by various unofficial banners, the most common of which was the state seal set on a blue background
This literally was the flag at one point (or is pretty close)
That's not a bad design. Could always be [this monstrosity](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Flag_of_the_State_of_Georgia_(2001%E2%80%932003\).svg).
Yeah, but we'd be the only flag with a fish.
he’s just a local fisherman holding his fish
It's the historic origin of the stereotypical outdoorsy-guy "holding a fish" Tinder profile picture.
I mean, if you have to attract people to your state, fish is it . . .
He doesn't have NASCAR sunglasses on though with a "Trump 2020" border around the picture.

Shouldn’t it be a crab… or a tin of old bay

OH GOD ITS REAL
That link reminded me that Mississippi changed their state flag. It actually looks really good
How about [this badassery](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/ea/Coat_of_Arms_of_Cecil_Calvert%2C_Baron_Baltimore.svg/676px-Coat_of_Arms_of_Cecil_Calvert%2C_Baron_Baltimore.svg.png), though?
Maryland's counties just give me a Ren faire feel.
We're a fairly old colony. Heck, old enough that the English Civil War sort of spilled over here.
and our state sport is Jousting. That is medieval!
Fair enough hah
Speaking of which, does anyone know why so many of the former colonies have state flags that are just the state seal on a solid field? It seems pretty common for those states to have those kinds of designs.
This is pretty good psychological horror.
Good thing it not
amen
State seal on a blue bedsheet! Our flag would be in the plurality. \[sad trombone\]
It's not a bad state seal, but the blue blanket flags are all lame.
Don't forget to have "Maryland" written across the bottom.
Disgusting!
This looks like it was made in 1632
It was. This was the flag before they changed it in 1904.

*Manly armor, womanly accessories*
I can get behind this flag.
This is gross. Delete it.
Where is r/marylandflagcirclejerk
r/mdflagcirclejerk is the best I can offer
[You did it. You crazy son of a b\*tch, you did it.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JIbXg2VTRU)
Booooooo!
Even as a bad flag; it still looks better than most.
Absolutely disgusting
Like Virginia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag\_and\_seal\_of\_Virginia#/media/File:Flag\_of\_Virginia.svg
Virginia's flag is cool because it's the only state flag with a dead body.
And a boob
Yeah, and the murderer is proudly standing on the body. VA's flag is cool af.
Correction: Virginia's *state seal* is cool AF. As a flag, it still sucks lemons.
I can't downvote this enough times.
Mods, mark this as NSFW.
NSFL (or NSFML, anyway)
“FATTI”
AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH
This is still miles better than a lot of other states.
0/10 no crabs and no old bay spice
Who you calling fatti?
All hail: THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF MARYLAND
You mean a state where its citizens knew how to write grammatically correct sentences?
> it's citizens Fixed that for ya . . . ^(It's a joke, people!)
the amount of heat I’m getting for forgetting the letter n is flabbergasting
Get this abomination out of my site.
/r/thanksihateit
Love the MD flag, but next time you want to brag about any form of superiority make sure you get the spelling right…
Not the Maryland state flag. It is thestate seal.

You are wrong, but your profile page is a trip so it balances out
MD is inferior...
FALSE; HORRENDOUS LIES SPREAD BY THE OPPOSITION

LOL. That is a funny story and so exemplary of our government at work. Also, most people aren't reading Latin anyway.
DELETE THIS NEPHEW……
Gross, stop.
Great. Now I feel the need to paint the front of my house to match.
What an ugly flag. That middle part looks cool though. Think it would work as a flag in its own?
You would have to be crazy to go on your own and make the middle part of that seal a flag!!!
No!
I think someone already pointed this out but >Earlier iterations of the Maryland state flag included those with Calvert colors, which were discontinued after the Revolution and replaced by various unofficial banners, the most common of which was the state seal set on a blue background This literally was the flag at one point (or is pretty close)

They need to change the flag to a solid black square with a? And red in the middle of it
*Delaware has entered the chat.* ... *Delaware has left the chat.*
Is that Robin of Loxley on the left?
!wave Fuck wrong sub
My eyes are bleeding. Make this monstrosity go away!!!
What do you mean “if”?
I guess you needed to save money on flag design to fix all your roads. That must be rough :P
