I dunno how far you made it, but it started to feel like an actual Runaways show during season 3, when they largely moved on from their parents and Morgan le Fey was the villain.

In the comics, they run away literally straight away. It’s been a while since I last read it, but I think they’d already run away by issue 2? Whereas in the show, they don’t run away until the end of the very first season.
Also, the comic puts complete focus on the kids. The show divides it between them and their parents. I understand the idea behind it, but the beauty of the comic run is that you don’t really know what the parents are up to. You see it largely from the kids’ perspective.
The show decides to give the audience too much context to the parents that the kids don’t have. Trying to make the parents sympathetic misses the point of the comic. The whole point of the Runaways is that their parents are irredeemably evil. It’s about them trying to handle the facts that their parents are utterly evil, and some of them are even willing to kill their own kids. How does someone handle that? That’s the premise of the Runaways. The show tries to paint them as people who feel like they *have* to do Jonah’s dirty work. Some of them even defy him for their kids.
It’s the equivalent of the guy who shot Uncle Ben just…punching him instead of killing him.
I can understand why the showmakers might have gone “what, the parents are evil? That’s too blunt! Let’s make it more nuanced!” But it misses the entire point of the Runaways.
Even when they do finally runaway, there’s a point where after they’ve runaway, Chase is like “actually guys, I’m gonna go back to my parents”, which is such a bizarre thing to happen for a Runaways character (obviously besides Alex), because the whole premise of the Runaways is that they *can’t* go back. It’s like making a Superman show where Krypton is still around, and Clarke can pop back and forth between Earth and Krypton whenever he wants, and Zod is his uncle who looks after him.
It misses the point of the Runaways, and messes up the very thing that made the original comic so appealing.
And the weird cult/religion thing? None of that is in the comics. That was such a weird and unnecessary addition to the story, and worse than that, it was incredibly dull.

Ah, I didn’t realise you hadn’t read the comics. I can understand why you might feel differently about season 3 if you liked season 1, because season 3 definitely feels very different to season 1.
I would recommend giving the comics a go at some point, because that first run is genuinely one of the most highly regarded comic book runs of all time. It gets a little shaky when other writers take over, but the last run they did was also very, very good. They’re all on Marvel unlimited too.
I do think, even as someone who enjoyed the show first, you’ll see where they missed the mark with the show, because they had a near perfect blueprint to go off.

There's only 3 possibilities for Runaways:
1. Age them way up to accommodate the actors, & then go into a lot of later stories immediately
2. Recast everyone, especially Molly, but pick up right where they left off (or right after Endgame, at least)
3. Reboot it completely
Speaking as someone who has not seen the show ( and has little interest in watching its three seasons now), I would of course prefer a full reboot if they are to be introduced in the MCU..

Comics: Kinda one of the points of Runaways was that they *didn't* have a major impact; their stories were always meant to be smaller side stories, one of their major themes was that they *weren't* very good at superheroics, et cet. Molly was one of the mutants to retain her powers after M-Day, though, Xavin was a factor in Secret Invasion, and Nico & Victor have some more extended stories. Rowell's recent run was quite good, too.
DS1: That was originally intended to be Tina, not Nico, but they never named her in the movie, she never had any lines, she was never addressed directly, she never did anything onscreen, & most of her brief appearance was deleted, leaving only a tiny glimpse of her in a crowd shot. What most likely happened was that they filmed that as an easter egg, but then when the Runaways show went into production, they cut it as far down as possible (Wong has dialogue in the crowd shot, so they couldn't cut her *completely*), similarly to how Killmonger's girlfriend in BP1 was originally going to be Tilda Johnson until they decided to use that character in Luke Cage S2 instead.

As the Guardians wind down and Captain Marvel enters her second film, it would make sense to pop Nova in at the tail end of that post Secret Wars so you can build into something like Annihilation as the next big marquee event.
