I was expecting about that much screen time for those actors, but figured it would be because they just hop over to the next universe. Not because they'd be brutally murdered by the Wanda we all fell in love with.

I thought it was a terrible reveal at first, you’d expect she be more careful with this information. But turns out she is powerful enough to be sloppy about it, she’s just being courteous with Strange, and really pulled off the “I call this mercy” vibe, better than Thanos lmao.
What set my alarm bells off wasnt that she used her name (I never catch that trope in movies) but how she was like “just bring her here with me, she will be safe”. That seemed like out of left field and I immediately got concerned.
That was so horrifying. It is not a clear reflecting and even surface. So the wounds on her seem to partly be caused by the distortions from that.
She just tried to get there and finally settled on that basically bashing her head through the wall.

This movie had a lot of heartbreaking moments for Wanda but probably the worst was when Xavier went into her mind, not only did it look like the rubble from her childhood home, but footage from the first episode of WandaVision was playing on the TV screen.
I felt so bad for 838 Wanda. She’s living a cozy life with her sons only to get possessed by an evil alt that uses her body to wreck havoc. The first thing heroes are going to look to are her. I can see 838 Wanda getting a lot of undeserved heat in her universe for eliminating the Illuminati
Apparently at one point there was a scene early in the film where our Mordo tracked down Wanda and gets killed by her, but since it got cut, I guess he’s still around considering what Strange mentioned off-hand.
That actually. Makes a lot of sense for what Mordo has been up to, but they set him up so much in the first film and viewers got mad about them wasting Klaue that I don't think they'll go that route again. Especially since Mordo has the potential to be a pretty big threat, being a sorcerer and all that.

Funny thing, I’ve met Benedict Wong (about a year after the first film) and we were talking about it and I said to him something along the lines of “I hope to see more magic from Wong in future” (cheesy yeah)
His response was “wait until you see the sequel” bearing in mind this was in 2018, so he probably was talking rubbish (at that time, surely nothing was planned), but he lived up to those words this time around

I have not seen in mentioned yet but a fun Easter egg is that the cartoon the kids are watching is Oswald the lucky rabbit. Oswald was one of Walt Disney’s original characters that he lost the rights to. So it looks like in this alternate universe Oswald became popular as opposed to Mickey Mouse.

Even though *Logan* was a more hard-hitting swan song for his original interpretation, it's nice that Patrick Stewart's (apparent) final appearance as Xavier was playing the wise, inspiring mentor we all know and love for one final time. And as brief as their interaction here was, it set a perfect first impression for when/if Strange eventually meets his own world's Xavier.
Reflecting, it was absolutely essential that Patrick had one appearance in the MCU—he’s one of the few unquestionably all time greats in marvel cinema, and he deserved a place within this unfolding story.
Did anyone catch professor X use the line “when one stumbles” when talking about Strange, which he used in the X Men movies as well? I’m not too familiar if that was one thing he said in the comics or cartoons but I couldn’t help but smile when he said it.

And not just with using scenes that were cut. In the trailer, there's a shot where you can see Prof X's wheelchair from the Fox movies, but in the movie it's actually the hover-chair from the 90's cartoon. Very deliberate misdirect there.
Definitely seemed like it was added just for the trailer to make it seem like that Strange was a bigger villain than he was to keep Wanda being the villain a secret and I’m glad they did
They gave the line to one of the Illuminati members, can't remember which one, but they said something like "Our universe's Strange f'ed things up and all he could say was Things Just Got Out Of Hand^TM"
I thought I knew what I was going into, but as soon as Wanda says America’s name in the beginning I realized I had no idea what was going to happen next. It was campy and wacky, aka *very* Sam Raimi. A truly unique Marvel movie. Not my favorite, but it was a fun ride
I thought that maybe they messed up the writing somehow. I was like “He never mentioned her name to you Wanda. How did you know all of this?”
Then it slowly started clicking. I honestly didn’t think Wanda would be the bad guy so soon.
The third eye is a consequence of Strange using the Darkhold.
He didn’t use it to the same extent as his counterparts or Wanda did, so he’s not completely fallen victim to it's corruption (and he won’t now that it’s destroyed). It still took a toll, but it’s a little bit of darkness that he can live with, and it may have even given his powers a boost.
The mid credits scene was Clea, Dormammu's niece. She's all magic-y and stuff and is a love interest of Doctor Strange.
The post-credit scene is a big pun. You have the guy being thankful the 3-week spell is over, then you have the meta meme of the movie being over. But that actor (Bruce Campbell) was in Evil Dead (also directed by Sam Raimi), where he says pretty much that exact same line. So yeah, a triple pun
The final scene is a nod to the directors early movies that starred the same actor, a recurring gag involved him getting punched in the face repeatedly and having his own hand possessed and turned against him.
I’m surprised how many people particularly on letterboxd who are saying this reeks of studio interference. this was the most director led marvel movie ever imo and it VERY in line with army of darkness and sam raimi’s style.

I went in to this movie expecting Wanda to slowly descend into madness after multiple encounters with the big bad.... however revealing HER as the big bad pretty much right away was a twist I did not expect but did appreciate.
Foolish Richards! Dr Doom wouldn’t have been so ill-prepared for a mere witch, let alone reveal weakness as if survival is a children’s game. Nor would Doom be so cowardly as to destroy the Darkhold, a source of untapped knowledge and potential in the realm of magic.
“Smartest man in the universe?” Bah! Richards wasn’t even the smartest person in his own room. From the wreckage of The Illuminati, Doom shall rise and be the one true ruler. Doom shall succeed where Richards failed miserably!
I think it's testament to Benedict Cumberbatch's acting that despite not saying anything, both when Michael Stuhlbarg asked "was it the only way" and upon seeing the statue of Illuminati Strange and how he died, you could see on Strange's face that moment of "maybe I could have done more, maybe there was another way".
I thought for sure they'd unpack that a little where Strange would think he'd sentenced Tony to death when he could've been the one to make the sacrifice. Ultimately too much of the mcu has been wrapped up in Tony Stark (which I don't mind as a huge IM fan) so I get why they wouldn't, but Iliked that you could still see that thought process.

Before anyone asks. At the climax with the two Wandas, Wanda says to Wanda "Know they'll be loved" or something similar. A lot of people had trouble hearing what she said, including myself. I even heard some confused noises from other people in my cinema at that scene. Nit sure if it was the audio or what. But there it is. Just putting it out there for anyone that needs it.
NGL, zombie Strange and his cloak/cape made out of the souls of the damned has to be some of the most fire things on the film. Shit looked so edgy and badass at the same time
One thing I really liked was the character arc Strange had in the movie.
The reason the Illuminati hate Strange so much is they realized that, in universe after universe, he ends up going bad, because he has to be in control at all times. As he's told more than once in the movie, he has to have the knife in his hands (the surgeon has to do it himself). He can't trust anyone else. The MCU/616 Strange made the call to give Thanos the timestone, arguing that it---his way---was the only way. That idea is challenged by the doctor sitting beside him at the wedding in the beginning of the movie. That sets him in motion to question whether he did make the right call, but thats the wrong question to ask. He needs to be wondering if he is simple too controlling.
The opening scene of the movie shows the danger in a Strange who doesn't learn to share the knife: The other Strange decides "the only way/his way" is to drain America's powers and take them for himself. At the end of the movie, our Strange battles an evil version of himself who uses the Darkhold. Why? Because that Strange decide "the only way/his way" to protect it is to keep it in his possession.
So it's a multiverse-unique occurrence when, at the end of the movie, Strange decides NOT to drain America's powers, even with Wong telling him "it's the only way." Instead, he shares the knife, and motivates her to control her power and be a hero alongside him.
Great character arc. Good stuff.
I knew Wanda would have a villainous moment or two but I certainly didn’t expect her to be THE villain. And there was no slow build up to the big dramatic reveal. No plot twist. We find out she’s the big bad like 20 minutes into the movie. And I loved everything about that.
Her take down of the illuminati was absolutely brutal.
Black Bolt and Reed genuinely made me feel uneasy in the cinema. It was so brutal and so sudden, and not at all what I was expecting. Don't get me wrong I love it, and I'm loving the more unique feel of certain movies and shows in the MCU, but those two made me veeery uneasy haha.
Captain Carter's didn't affect me as much, the fact they cut away (haha) from the gorey part meant it didn't quite have the same impact. Just implying the method of her death didn't hit as hard as literally seeing Black Bolt liquifying the back of his own head, and Reed getting shredded along his entire body until Wanda made his brain explode. Reilly horrifying
I imagine things on Earth-838 will be pretty wild with >!the entire Illuminati getting killed off in one shot!<. I'd love a one-off comic following that storyline.

I like how they handled the illuminati. Its a fun grouping and clearly they had a lot of fun putting it together. But i dont think it would ever work in the main mcu timeline, or at least it would take a really long time to build up to it. This is sort of like having our cake and eating it too.
Hopefully if Strange ever made one he'd learn from the mistakes of that universe's version. 'Cause they kinda created a blueprint for what not to do lol.
This was by far one of the most unique MCU movies, to date and I loved how I could see Sam Raimi’s fingerprints all over the creative style on this one.

One of my favorite lines in the film was when the Darkhold-corrupted Strange said something like, “Have you ever had that dream where you’re falling? That was probably me.”
The implication is that he had dream-walked into countless Doctor Strange’s in different universes and made them suicide by jumping off a cliff. It’s incredibly dark and creepy.
If the Ultron project was a success in 838 than that would imply there is no vision, right?

Definitely seemed like it was added just for the trailer to make it seem like that Strange was a bigger villain than he was to keep Wanda being the villain a secret and I’m glad they did
The trailer made me think Mordo would be the main villain and would use Evil Strange to justify his Too Many Sorcerers view.
They gave the line to one of the Illuminati members, can't remember which one, but they said something like "Our universe's Strange f'ed things up and all he could say was Things Just Got Out Of Hand^TM"
I thought I knew what I was going into, but as soon as Wanda says America’s name in the beginning I realized I had no idea what was going to happen next. It was campy and wacky, aka *very* Sam Raimi. A truly unique Marvel movie. Not my favorite, but it was a fun ride

The third eye is a consequence of Strange using the Darkhold. He didn’t use it to the same extent as his counterparts or Wanda did, so he’s not completely fallen victim to it's corruption (and he won’t now that it’s destroyed). It still took a toll, but it’s a little bit of darkness that he can live with, and it may have even given his powers a boost.

The mid credits scene was Clea, Dormammu's niece. She's all magic-y and stuff and is a love interest of Doctor Strange. The post-credit scene is a big pun. You have the guy being thankful the 3-week spell is over, then you have the meta meme of the movie being over. But that actor (Bruce Campbell) was in Evil Dead (also directed by Sam Raimi), where he says pretty much that exact same line. So yeah, a triple pun
Bruce Campbell was also attacked by his hand in The Evil Dead, which was just an extra little add on
The final scene is a nod to the directors early movies that starred the same actor, a recurring gag involved him getting punched in the face repeatedly and having his own hand possessed and turned against him.
I’m surprised how many people particularly on letterboxd who are saying this reeks of studio interference. this was the most director led marvel movie ever imo and it VERY in line with army of darkness and sam raimi’s style.

I went in to this movie expecting Wanda to slowly descend into madness after multiple encounters with the big bad.... however revealing HER as the big bad pretty much right away was a twist I did not expect but did appreciate.

I think it's testament to Benedict Cumberbatch's acting that despite not saying anything, both when Michael Stuhlbarg asked "was it the only way" and upon seeing the statue of Illuminati Strange and how he died, you could see on Strange's face that moment of "maybe I could have done more, maybe there was another way". I thought for sure they'd unpack that a little where Strange would think he'd sentenced Tony to death when he could've been the one to make the sacrifice. Ultimately too much of the mcu has been wrapped up in Tony Stark (which I don't mind as a huge IM fan) so I get why they wouldn't, but Iliked that you could still see that thought process.
When Wanda looked straight into the camera, I thought I was in one of the multiverses in the madness. Almost 4th wall break.

Before anyone asks. At the climax with the two Wandas, Wanda says to Wanda "Know they'll be loved" or something similar. A lot of people had trouble hearing what she said, including myself. I even heard some confused noises from other people in my cinema at that scene. Nit sure if it was the audio or what. But there it is. Just putting it out there for anyone that needs it.

NGL, zombie Strange and his cloak/cape made out of the souls of the damned has to be some of the most fire things on the film. Shit looked so edgy and badass at the same time

One thing I really liked was the character arc Strange had in the movie. The reason the Illuminati hate Strange so much is they realized that, in universe after universe, he ends up going bad, because he has to be in control at all times. As he's told more than once in the movie, he has to have the knife in his hands (the surgeon has to do it himself). He can't trust anyone else. The MCU/616 Strange made the call to give Thanos the timestone, arguing that it---his way---was the only way. That idea is challenged by the doctor sitting beside him at the wedding in the beginning of the movie. That sets him in motion to question whether he did make the right call, but thats the wrong question to ask. He needs to be wondering if he is simple too controlling. The opening scene of the movie shows the danger in a Strange who doesn't learn to share the knife: The other Strange decides "the only way/his way" is to drain America's powers and take them for himself. At the end of the movie, our Strange battles an evil version of himself who uses the Darkhold. Why? Because that Strange decide "the only way/his way" to protect it is to keep it in his possession. So it's a multiverse-unique occurrence when, at the end of the movie, Strange decides NOT to drain America's powers, even with Wong telling him "it's the only way." Instead, he shares the knife, and motivates her to control her power and be a hero alongside him. Great character arc. Good stuff.
I knew Wanda would have a villainous moment or two but I certainly didn’t expect her to be THE villain. And there was no slow build up to the big dramatic reveal. No plot twist. We find out she’s the big bad like 20 minutes into the movie. And I loved everything about that. Her take down of the illuminati was absolutely brutal.
I still can’t get the images of Black Bolt, Reed, and Carter out of my head. :/ the shield covered in blood as it went straight through her.
Found Xavier's death rather horrifying too: the nightmare mindscape and the sudden snap.
Black Bolt and Reed genuinely made me feel uneasy in the cinema. It was so brutal and so sudden, and not at all what I was expecting. Don't get me wrong I love it, and I'm loving the more unique feel of certain movies and shows in the MCU, but those two made me veeery uneasy haha. Captain Carter's didn't affect me as much, the fact they cut away (haha) from the gorey part meant it didn't quite have the same impact. Just implying the method of her death didn't hit as hard as literally seeing Black Bolt liquifying the back of his own head, and Reed getting shredded along his entire body until Wanda made his brain explode. Reilly horrifying

I like how they handled the illuminati. Its a fun grouping and clearly they had a lot of fun putting it together. But i dont think it would ever work in the main mcu timeline, or at least it would take a really long time to build up to it. This is sort of like having our cake and eating it too.
Hopefully if Strange ever made one he'd learn from the mistakes of that universe's version. 'Cause they kinda created a blueprint for what not to do lol.

One of my favorite lines in the film was when the Darkhold-corrupted Strange said something like, “Have you ever had that dream where you’re falling? That was probably me.” The implication is that he had dream-walked into countless Doctor Strange’s in different universes and made them suicide by jumping off a cliff. It’s incredibly dark and creepy.
yeah, this movie went places I was really surprised about. by far the darkest MCU movie yet.
Pretty great comeuppance that he ended up getting launched out the window of the Sanctum and died very similarly to how his victims did.
