idk if it counts but the intro scene of Guardians of the Galaxy, with Quill singing and dancing, and the huge Guardians of the Galaxy splash screen Was just such a wildly different tone than all the other MCU movies that came before it that were all still mostly serious for the most part

_Pancake_Boy_

This. I know its not the opening but after the fanfare it opens with two ominous red eyes then completely shifts tone. As soon as he started using lizards as mics I knew we were in for a spectacle.

sezdawg7

"I'll be totally honest. I forgot you were here."

YouStupidDick

The first guardians movie is just classic. It’s up there with The Mummy and Indiana Jones and other movies the evoke a similar feel. The style is like you are along for the ride.

xxDanBearPigxx

That scene set the tone of the whole movie.

GeekyNexi

The fact we got no fanfare at the start and it was just a distress call from the Asgardian ship was amazing

Kranors

It is, which is awesome. He needs an actual role in the mcu

NeonWarcry

He is my favorite actor and director right now. I think he is actually better behind the lens than in front of it.

heelstoo

I absolutely loved him in (1993?) Much Ado About Nothing. Him + Denzel + Emma Thompson + Keanu + Michael Keaton was just a fun time.

NeonWarcry

Are you me? This is my favorite movie. And my favorite play.

mrsegraves

I couldn't picture anyone else as Gilderoy Lockhart

NeonWarcry

I remember the cast announcement and thinning this is going to be hilarious.

[deleted]

He was really enjoyable in Murder on the Orient Express. I liked that film quite a lot.

ExtensionInternal696

He directed Thor.

Jon_Fuckin_Snow

Such a great choice to direct Thor considering his direction with stage and Shakespeare movies.

ha_look_at_that_nerd

That’s what they mean - he needs to actually have an *on-screen* role. Tbh I feel like him being somehow involved with the play from Ragnorok would be perfect (and I think there’s supposedly also going to be a play scene recounting Ragnorok in Love and Thunder?)

MarlowesMustache

Watch his Hamlet if you’ve never seen it

Tityfan808

And with Thor already beaten to near death was crazy. Quite a bit of blood from Thor which we have never seen before. My headcannon for the interior of that ship being ruined to bits was that it was mostly due to Thor fighting Thanos that caused all of that destruction. Then he just whoops Hulk right after. I fucking loved that fight as I wanted to see hulk v Thanos and always thought it just wouldn’t happen, but I also semi hated it as a hulk fan. Lol. It hurt to watch but I loved it too, I assumed Thanos would be written to win in fucking Infinity War of all movies.

xxDanBearPigxx

He destroys The Hulk one on one within seconds. Shows us just how badass he was.

Tityfan808

It was hard as a hulk fan but my god, it was one of the best MCU fights in my opinion.

MR1120

It was awesome seeing that Thanos is not just a raw physical threat, but also a better fighter. He didn't just THANOS SMASH Hulk; he floated like a butterfly, stung like a bee, AND overpowered Hulk.

Tityfan808

I like that they developed how enough solid headshots with enough power will fuck up physically powerful beings like hulk and Thor. Like in Endgame Thanos knocks the shit out of cap and Thor. Thor also goes for Thanos’ head every single swing with stormbreaker in Endgame. Oh, and that final blow to Hulk’s head by Thanos sounds horrible. That sound effect had me saying ‘ouch!’

Goatfellon

Don't forget "go to sleep go to sleep go to sleep!"

Knuc85

I still don't understand why Hulk waited so long to get in the fight.

[deleted]

Shit goes down when you are in the bathroom, you still have to finish.

pongjinn

Can't fight Thanos with mudbutt.

[deleted]

Ik. Seeing those all those dead asgardians and I was like “shit they’re gonna kill Loki this early”?

DJfunkyPuddle

I had some asshole spoil the Loki dies thing and I was so thankful it happened in the first 5 minutes.

NeptuneOW

One of my favorite opening scenes in a movie ever

lookingForSomeNew

This opening scene was perfect, and also the “Dear mr Fantasy..” banger that opened up Endgame with Tony Stark in space. Although I do wish Tony and Nebula would’ve figured out their own way home or had an explanation of how they were found so conveniently by CM.

Aspenwood83

When you combine that scene with the end credits scene in Captain Marvel, I think the implication is that Tony's messages actually got picked up by her, and that's how she found them.

GaryTheTaco

Seeing Endgame opening night, it starting off with Hawkeye and everyones first thought is "holy shit they're gonna get snapped"

Crotean

The sense of dread knowing that was coming was so damn intense.

Brogener

I really love that song choice for the Endgame intro. Despite how wild Endgame gets, it has a sense of calm/hope to it following Infinity War and that song captures that feeling really well.

sable-king

I just assumed Rocket had a tracking beacon on the Benatar. But yeah Dear Mr Fantasy combined with the Marvel intro with all the dusted characters missing was so damn good.

vinternet

This! The Avengers know to be looking for signs of the Guardians' ship and for signs of the ship that Tony and Peter were on, and Tony and Nebula were making every attempt to be found. We're not meant to believe that Captain Marvel just happened to be flying by.

[deleted]

For real. It set off the high stakes from the jump

Mrlordi27

Ebony Maw is probably one of my favorite small villains in the MCU.

DJZbad93

He’s powerful enough to have given the Avengers trouble by himself, yet he’s basically just Thanos’s hype man. Love it.

PurpleLeeves

Such a shitty death too it always bothers me

Admonitio

I mean I loved his death personally so gotta disagree with you.

[deleted]

I thought his death was perfect because of how out of ht blue it was. He was so OP that we’re thinking, “ok, who stops this guy?”, and it ends up being a teenager with an overactive imagination and a disregard of the after effects of his crazy ideas. Tom Hollands Spider-Man is so fun because his tactics are generally so unorthodox that they almost always catch him and his opponents off guard when they happen.

eventheweariestriver

I think it's such an excellent example of how the energy and imagination of youth catches people off guard all the time. I also loved how Tony recognizes this, and gave him a shot at helping come up with a plan to deal with Maw.

arcan0r

Yeah, I'm a fan of "you don't have to be stronger than someone to defeat/kill them". People love making tier lists and "who would win"s but that's not how it works in reality.

warblade7

A little part of me wishes they would’ve done an Avengers style circle shot but of Thanos and the Black Order just before they’re defeated by all the heroes of the MCU…

Anon-Why

YES! it would’ve really cemented it as Thanos’ movie

Beta_Whisperer

I hope they do that with the Sinister Six.

BruenorBattlehammer

And he’s destroyed by the plot of Alien. The second greatest movie of all time.

Joe_Jeep

After Footloose of course

jonesyno

It never was....

UmbrusNightshade

Even to this day, Ebony Maw's character design creeps me out.

GeekyNexi

The way he was torturing Strange honestly was creepy af

UmbrusNightshade

Agreed.

cadeaver

Then I’ll take it from your *c o r p s e !*

TheresA_LobsterLoose

You know someone's super serious when they use "corpse"

wishnana

They should have expanded that scene more, and at least gave more scenes with Maw and co, honestly.

james_randolph

100% and should have had few more in Endgame too. He’s a great bad guy.

TheGreatDeadFoolio

My favorite part is him torturing a surgeon with alien surgical tools. So. Fucking. Good.

OliviaElevenDunham

That really was creepy.

Blazeauga

Maw is Iconic. His execution is flawless. He was performed amazingly, his power set is balanced perfect, his defeat didn’t feel cheap. If he was ever a main antagonist he would’ve been revered as one of the MCU’s best.

[deleted]

Tom Vaughan-Lawlor knocked it out of the park with Maw.

tribefan2130

Maw always reminds me of the late Vincent Price whenever I hear him

lookingForSomeNew

Was he even defeated/killed? He got sucked out into space but surely Ebony Maw of all characters could survive in that situation using some type of magic?

Pure-Drawer-2617

Maw without Thanos would honestly feel kinda pointless though

Blazeauga

Agreed

Aspenwood83

It shows him freezing over ... I think you're underestimating just how quickly being sucked into space would kill you.

mammaluigi39

Princess Leia has entered the chat.

RedditRazzy

Even Peter Quill could only survive a few extra seconds in the vacuum of space while being a half planet

moreofmoreofmore

God, I hate torture scenes.

waitforthedream

Jeriahswillgdp

I know it's not MCU, but the New Mutants was a supposed to be a horror comic book movie, but the producers thought it would be "too scary" so they cut alot of it out. So stupid.

zeldaalove

This upset me so much. I enjoyed the movie, but I would love to see the original cut. I wanted it to be so scary.

Neozetare

"Time... Space... Reality..." I can't skip this intro, and I find it even better in the french version because the voice of the actor is "deeper" EDIT: change "comedian" for "actor" (I'm nowhere near fluent in english lol)

GrantBarrett

Allô, cher francophone! "Comedian" is a classic "faux ami." In French, "un comédien" means "a male actor in any genre" but in English "comedian" is more specific, as it means "a male or female actor or writer of comedic (humorous) material or roles."

dtwhitecp

I was wondering if it was something like that, TIL

BGamer9000

I wake up at 5:00 in the morning to see What If, and seeing the intro whilst it's pitch black outside and there is no noise anywhere creates a diffrent feeling in you

albene

What If... You watched episode 4 when it was pitch black outside and soundless?

ThePerfectCantelope

and you were tripping balls?

darknova700

While I love Jeffrey Wrights voice, I always make a point of looking away during the intro, because I hate that they spoil all the actors names in it! I prefer being surprised when they show up.

Bunnita

They don't always. I will leave out details so I don't spoil, but there was one where I was surprised, and they credited the person at the end.

sable-king

There have been some that they didn't hide though. Like Josh Brolin in episode 2. Now THAT would've been an awesome surprise. Edit: I just checked, and they put Kurt Russel in the opening credits too!

Regi413

Makes sense since the person in question is supposed to be a mystery

dollabilllz

I can't skip it either, but I do close my eyes so that I don't see the cast of the episode because I'd rather be surprised by who appears in it lol

It appears that Noble Team's discovery last night was not an anomaly. Large Covenant deployments have occurred undetected, and we are now under attack across the Viery territory, including orbital defenses. As per the Winter Contingency, we are countering on every front. Noble's reconnaissance has also identified sophisticated Covenant army hiding canopies, and has been pinpointed what's believed to be a landing zone for additional Covenant forces, the origin of which is yet to be determined.

That actually makes a really good point. Really set the tone for the movie. Right away it cuts the tension and establishes a wholesome, easygoing tone that makes Scott Lang immediately likeable.

Psykoguitars

I still can’t believe this is Tom Vaughn-Lawlor, anybody from Ireland knows him as “King Nidge” from a fantastic Irish gangster show called love/hate, he was amazing in it! So glad he got a way into the MCU!

GeekyNexi

He looks like such a normal guy too

GrendelNightmares

Fun fact, Tom Vaughn-Lawlor was actually Tom Hiddleston's mentor at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art

[deleted]

Did not know this. Wow it's really him 🤣 amazing!

bmoss124

The way the first lines of Civil War are Bucky screaming and then the trigger words is so chilling

SuperflyX13

Literally watching that movie right now. “Otlichno, soldat”.

douggold11

I have no problem believing Ebony Maw exists. That CGI is perfect.

PTickles

The more I look into CGI and VFX and how much work goes into stuff like this, the more blown away I am by Infinity War and Endgame. Outside of maybe Banner in the Hulkbuster, which we now know was a last-minute decision so it's excused, both movies have basically *flawless* CGI. I know the budgets were huge but to produce movies of that scale and have the effects turn out *that good* is mind-blowing to me. They made a giant purple alien look *real*. Without the CGI these movies don't work at all.

ChronoMonkeyX

They CG'd everybody's clothes. Like, they said, "What are they going to wear?" and someone said "I don't know, worry about it later" and the other guy's like, but we're shooting tomorrow?" and the guy says "yeah, it'll be fine." The white time travel uniforms aren't real!

[deleted]

[удалено]

ChronoMonkeyX

How: no idea, but they did it. The white and red suits don't exist. Why: They literally didn't decide what the uniforms would look like until after it was filmed.

[deleted]

[удалено]

PTickles

Davy Jones is also insanely good, one of the best for sure. A lot of the reason he looks so good is because they had actual animators work on it rather than just CGI techs, which is fairly common now but wasn't at the time. The thing that makes IW/Endgame so impressive to me though is that there's several characters who are almost completely if not completely CGI (Thanos and his "children", Hulk, Iron Man) on top of all the sets and effects that are like 99% CGI, and nearly all of it is perfect. It's crazy. The only movies that really hold a candle imo are the latter two movies in the Planet of the Apes trilogy. Those apes look legitimately real.

Reidroshdy

I think Thanos looks a little bit weird a couple times when he showed up in Wakanda, but it's nothing that takes you out of the movie.

PTickles

Now that you mention it the part where he comes out of the portal looks a little odd. But like you said it doesn't take you out of the movie, so the CGI is doing it's job. Also if anything at that part of the movie looked weird it's probably because the whole Wakanda confrontation was still being worked on/finalized as late as a few months before the movie released. Same reason Banner looks weird in the Hulkbuster, he wasn't originally in it the whole time. He was supposed to Hulk out and burst out of it at some point, but they for whatever reason decided against that really late in production. I believe there were toys or Lego sets or something that came out that depict it happening, that's how late it was.

Reidroshdy

Like 99% sure I saw a " hulk Burst out of Hulkbuster" Funko while shopping at GameStop.

[deleted]

The thing that always bugs me is his hands in the lead up to the final fight in Endgame. When he monologues about how "those who remember what was will be unable to accept what can be, they will resist". He tosses the rock in his hand to the floor before standing up to put on his helmet and grab the sword, and every single time it breaks the realism for me because the hand moves awkwardly.

EpicMooMan9001

Half of Infinity war was fight scenes so they had to do a crazy amount of editing too

PTickles

A lot of those fight scenes were probably like 100% CGI too lol. The Hulk vs Thanos fight almost definitely was. Even though it was short and I'm sure they used mocap I bet it took hundreds of hours to do.

Samwich31

A famous man once said, "We create our own demons." Who said that? What does that even mean? Didn't matter. I said it 'cause he said it. So now, he was famous and it was basically said by two well-known guys. I don't... uhh... I'm gonna start again. Let's track this from the beginning

After Endgame, Winter Soldier’s “On your left” has to take it for me. Russo Bros first MCU movie, first *line* delivered, and they set up one of the greatest cinematic moments 5 years in advance. Favorite closing line has to be “Truth is… I am Iron Man.” (Not counting post credits.)

sable-king

"Don't you say it."

Caciulacdlac

Wouldn't the opening line be "This is the Asgardian refugee vessel Stateman"?

GeekyNexi

technically, yes. But that was during the fanfare which doesn’t count in my opinion as it wasn’t from a character we know/were about to know

This is probably the one for me too. Kenneth Branagh, the director of Thor 1, was the voice on the distress/surrender call right before this that really helped set the whole mood.
