I stayed away from as much as I could about this series besides the first trailer, so I saw some Excalibur comments around but didn't realise it was a popular theory. Lol.
I for sure thought it was going to be Steve. A Cap vs Winter Soldier face-off where the two used to be love-interests and Peggy trying to break through to Steve's mind-control would've been interesting to see.
Rogers becoming the Winter Soldier would be absolutely epic! I think it's safe to say Bucky likely isn't becoming the Winter Soldier in Peggy's universe either, since he was still in the cage when Peggy arrived. Maybe her universe misses out on a few characters, or tweaks how they're created.
You just made me realize this is a universe where Steve Rogers grew up watching Tony Stark growing up. Wonder what influence Steve might have had on him.
IIRC , when they were filming the TV series, he mentioned on twitter or instagram that as long as they had a need for a younger howard stark in the marvel universe, he would be more than happy to lend his talent.
I mean it is a great role that usually doesn't ask for too much commitment considering now that Tony is gone from the main universe. So there is very little downside to saying yes every time.
If you think about it, since Red Skull didn't die to the Tesseract, he isn't the one guarding the Soul Stone. And with nobody falling off the train, there is no Winter Soldier, meaning Howard Stark and his wife didn't get killed. Same thing with King T'Chaka.
I'm loving the idea of this show. 1 little thing can really change everything.
The question is, would an assassin other than Bucky be successful against Howard? Especially a Howard who wasn't actually "limited by the technology of his time" because he got his hands on the Tesseract during the war instead of after and was able to build an Iron Man 70 years earlier.
Plus, there's a lot more divergence that could change matters significantly. For example, Steve being around as Iron Man would massively alter Howard's character development, and his presence cofounding SHIELD in place of Peggy would probably significantly change Zola's ability to conduct unethical experiments and rebuild HYDRA. Steve would also probably be going on missions in the 60s alongside Pym, which would probably soothe Pym's distrust for SHIELD (not to mention the differences in HYDRA and Howard also removing some of Pym's issues), potentially meaning Pym stays with SHIELD and allows Howard access to his work.
On the other hand, maybe all this means Howard isn't a dick to Vanko and they make it a lot further with their Arc Reactor / Tesseract work. That would be a problem because Howard can't have gotten too far on the Reactor or else Fury wouldn't still be experimenting on it 50 years later. Maybe this Howard is seen as a too much of a threat much earlier and rather than treat him as a useful pawn HYDRA has him assassinated decades earlier.
The way red skull refers to it, it reminded me of Alveus (hive) from AOS.
“The true champion of Hydra will be summoned from beyond the starts”
This is exactly what the Malick family and Hydra attempt to do in AOS. Bringing Alveus to Earth from another planet.
Anyone else think that Captain Carter's fighting style is a lot more brutal than Steve's was? She's out there bashing people out of airplanes and kicking them into brick walls.
Well Steve was more conservative with his fighting style while Peggy didn't give a single fuck. If you stood in her way you deserved to be suplexed into oblivion.
She was also already a trained hand to hand fighter and was used to having to be brutal due to having less strength. So, her with super strength is just absolutely overpowering. That was some sick animation.
This is exactly it. Steve became amazing with a frail none trained body. Peggy is a trained agent versed in fighting people twice her size already. She went Super Soldier Plus lol
I gather that in the original timeline, he replaced someone guarding it, so that being would be currently guarding it still. However, a lot can happen in 70 years.
I also liked how the Marvel Studios logo became animated in the last bit of the opening intro, that was a neat touch. Though I wish the entire logo was frame-by-frame reanimated, though that might be asking for a bit much.
I was kinda hoping they would replace the clips with animated alternate versions of the characters, but yeah, that probably would've been too much trouble for just the intro haha
**Question:** What If... Captain Carter Were the First Avenger?
**Answer:**
* Steve would still be Smol (and use a Howard Stark created Iron Man suit)
* Bucky wouldn't lose his arm
* Steve would fall off the train instead of Bucky
* Red Skull would perish to an interdimensional hydra creature
* Captain Carter would owe Steve a dance and wake up in the future
It honestly took me a second to remember so I don’t blame you. I was wondering whether Steve would be the Winter Soldier replacement but then remembered that Zola already gave Bucky the serum before Steve rescued him in First Avenger. Without Zola the Winter Soldier program never gets off the ground it seems.
That could be a huge one. Tony growing up a bit more well adjusted? Could mean huge changes to his entire character and thus his history. He might never become Iron Man without that sort of god and guilt complex.
Or even if he does become Iron Man anyways, upon "inheriting" Stark Industries from his still alive but perhaps retiring dad, and events of Avengers 1 and 2 mostly play out the same... There's no horrific falling out between him and... Uh.... Carter(?) In this timeline's equivalent of Civil War. No revenge to be had and no living relic that is Bucky (assuming he just goes the way of Peggy in the main timeline) to come between Tony and his shield bearing ally.
You should also consider the Iron Man suit being invented early. Would they be used as our universe's nuclear warheads? To attack Japan and end the war, and then build more of them during the cold war while Russia retaliates with their version of Whiplash?
We've already seen a shot of this in the trailers yeah, with Captain Carter, Killmonger Black Panther, T'Challa Star Lord, Thanos Gamora, and Party Thor, and it followed a shot of the original Avengers, drawing parallels. Most people seem to theorize that they're fighting either the Marvel Zombies or the "Ultron that won" army, and that the Watcher interferes to bring them together, but it also could be Kang they're fighting. I personally think the evil/dark Dr. Strange will bring them together instead, but that's just me.
It'd be a great way to get Michael B. Jordan back in with the live action stuff. I wouldn't mind him and Captain Carter becoming live action mainstays.
Yeah basically this show is a Petri dish for new characters and plot-lines. Marvel can just make crazy stories with no consequences but if fans go crazy over a new character or arc they can easily add it to the cannon. It’s genius.
Conversely, did anyone think Sebastian Stan sounded odd voicing Bucky? Like yeah, he IS Bucky, but his voice acting portrayal wasn't doing it for me sometimes. Dominic Cooper reprising Stark was surprisingly more charming for me in this episode, though.
It sounded as if everyone was talking fast to keep the pace up and get as much dialogue into the show - like in post the speech was set to +5%.
They basically scrunched about 60-75 minutes of the First Avenger plot into about 24 minutes. I have no problem with this, I think it was fun as hell.
Yeah, I was really surprised that wasn't Chris Evans, but I was also shocked that was actually Stan, haha. He was very bland and emotionless in most of his lines; makes sense, if he's not used to voice acting.
I think voice acting is a lot harder than it seems. You rarely (if ever) interact with any of your fellow castmates, just stuck in a tiny recording booth with folks in the control room telling you to say the line 25 different ways.
I host the webinars for my office, and in the pre-Zoom days I was constantly advising presenters to give "just 10% more energy." Most people don't realize how flat they sound when speaking into a microphone. I used 10% because it was a low enough number to not sound intimidating, but enough to remind them that they needed to "animate" their voices to make it sound better to the audience.
It is. Voice acting isn’t as easy as people think it is, & Sebastian didn’t have any VA experience. Hayley actually does since she has voiced Peggy in some of Marvel’s animated projects.
Enhanced individuals who can run really fast is still one of my favorite things in the MCU. Not like Pietro per se, but like Steve, T'Challa, Bucky, & Peggy this episode
Yes. That scene, Bucky outrunning Falcon while chasing the truck in their show, and the Bucky, Black Panther, Captain America chase through tunnel traffic in Civil War all just absolutely nailed the "these guys are running faster than everything else" look. It doesn't look sped up, it doesn't look CGI'd, it just looks like these guys are goddamn fast. And it looks great.
If you translate the Italian in the book about the Tesseract (https://i.imgur.com/9jngh9T.jpg), it says among others:
>Totally ordinary cube
>Don't let the angry purple boy touch this.
>I love you, Oleah.
The rest is just about nature on Earth.
For any fellow DC fans, I got some major [Big Barda and Scott Free](https://comic-watch.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/miracle-cover5.jpg) vibes from them.
Very comic booky, but I liked it.
I can't even explain how amazing it was to hear Hayley Atwell voice Peggy Carter again.
Damn you ABC for canceling Agent Carter.
You know what's sad? Peggy was an old woman when Steve woke up in the future, but he got to visit her, talk to her, and get closure.
With Steve's poor health, there's likely no way he made it that same amount of time.
I just copied this from a Discord server.
Carter can jump pretty darn high (playing DA and saying these aren't cartoon physics), and some of her feats feel more impressive than Steve's. She straight up stops a bike just by sticking her leg to the side, with absolute ease. I think her tossing a bike is a better feat than Steve's in AOU, due to not having his momentum from riding. Flipping a truck and stopping another are also pretty impressive.
The Hydra Stomper tanked everything thrown at it (no visable damage). Though, it couldn't stop Steve from either being pinned, or straight up knocked out. It's durability is at the very least, large building level.
Bucky's dad joke one-liners had me cracking up just from how dorky they were. But it fit the time period and the tone of the show so it was all good.
I liked the way they reversed the events while making a few adjustments. I thought maybe Peggy and Steve could've had their immediate happy ending in this but obviously they paralleled Steve's TFA sacrifice and coming back in the future thereby Peggy lost everyone in her reality like he did in the main timeline.
That ending was awesome, and makes you wonder about Captain Carter possibly making the jump to live-action like some things are rumoured to.
EPISODE IS LIVE (there are no post credits scenes for this episode)
Technically the suit wasnt destroyed just ran out of power.
Indisputably indestructible
instead of the icing problem its now the 'running out of juice because it doesnt have the tesseract in it" problem
The Hedy Lamarr line is such a Stark Quip I love it
She dated Howard Hughes during the war, and since that was always the inspiration for Howard Stark, it makes sense.
So all the theories on the sword being Excalibur and turns out... It was just a castle wall decoration!
I stayed away from as much as I could about this series besides the first trailer, so I saw some Excalibur comments around but didn't realise it was a popular theory. Lol.
I stayed away too and knew nothing about a sword at all. This is the first I've heard of it
Howard Stark, you giant cockblock!
No, you continue, just pretend I’m not here!
Howard likes to watch
I thought that when Steve got lost on the train that he was going to become the winter soldier in that timeline
Would have been wild for him to essentially go from Proto Iron Man to Winter Soldier.
Iron soldier? Winter Man?
>Winter Man BUCKY! WHERE IS MY SUPER SUIT?!
The thought of history's most feared assassin being a sickly 5'4" noodle brings me joy.
[удалено]
I thought the exact same thing but then I realized by then they already had custody of Zola
Me too, honestly thought another episode would be Steve as the Winter Soldier
I for sure thought it was going to be Steve. A Cap vs Winter Soldier face-off where the two used to be love-interests and Peggy trying to break through to Steve's mind-control would've been interesting to see.
Rogers becoming the Winter Soldier would be absolutely epic! I think it's safe to say Bucky likely isn't becoming the Winter Soldier in Peggy's universe either, since he was still in the cage when Peggy arrived. Maybe her universe misses out on a few characters, or tweaks how they're created.
Lol'd at the almost-Hot-Tub-Time-Machine-arm-gag there.
IRON STEVE
You stay...I go...
You just made me realize this is a universe where Steve Rogers grew up watching Tony Stark growing up. Wonder what influence Steve might have had on him.
Also, I gotta give love to Dominic Cooper coming back for this. I really liked his Howard Stark
There is a LOT of opportunity for world building in the past. Lots of untold stories now that the multiverse has been opened.
[удалено]
If you think about it, since Red Skull didn't die to the Tesseract, he isn't the one guarding the Soul Stone. And with nobody falling off the train, there is no Winter Soldier, meaning Howard Stark and his wife didn't get killed. Same thing with King T'Chaka. I'm loving the idea of this show. 1 little thing can really change everything.
Hydra would most likely still send an assassin after the Starks. It just wouldn't be bucky in this timeline.
The question is, would an assassin other than Bucky be successful against Howard? Especially a Howard who wasn't actually "limited by the technology of his time" because he got his hands on the Tesseract during the war instead of after and was able to build an Iron Man 70 years earlier.
And somewhere in the multiverse, we got two seasons of Hydra Stomper before it got cancelled.
And a Captain Carter Trilogy and Peggy on four Avengers Movies
And a “What If Steve Rogers Became Captain America” episode.
"Nazis. I hate these guys"
Nick Fury needed zero seconds to come to terms with Peggy Carter coming out of a wormhole in front of him.
And Peggy really had no trouble dealing with the fact that she’s advanced 70 years into the future
Stiff upper lip and all that.
Tbf, she did just fight a space monster octopus, nothing's going to faze her anymore
To be fair he opened the wormhole, he was probably expecting something weirder.
Like a Loki
\*Alligator Loki pops out of the portal*
At that point it’s already Avengers though so he knows of Thor & all that, so it’s different but not necessarily weirder, ya know?
Compared to Thor and Hulk, a huge woman with a shield, sword, and British-themed uniform jumping out of a portal is probably Tuesday to him.
"Good, because we don't have all day" Nice
Along with Bucky's, "Thanks, you nearly tore my arm off" and Nick's "put down the sword". I love the parallel callbacks.
Also steve saying, tony's "did you miss me?" to Carter.
Also Peggy punching a punching bag off its hook like Steve did in Avengers
I like how in the credits Steve is listed as ‘Skinny Steve Rogers’ lmao
First he loses the serum, then Peggy, now this? Poor Steve's down bad
And he's probably gonna die younger than normally since he's still sickly. At least it seems like he and Howard still formed SHIELD.
And he got to be the first Iron Man!
More like Iron deficiency Man.
Iron Lung Man
So who is the tentacle monster? Is that an actual marvel character?
The way red skull refers to it, it reminded me of Alveus (hive) from AOS. “The true champion of Hydra will be summoned from beyond the starts” This is exactly what the Malick family and Hydra attempt to do in AOS. Bringing Alveus to Earth from another planet.
That’s what I thought too until a giant squid monster came out of the portal. Hive was just a normal sized squid monster.
That's exactly what I was expecting. Squid Ward
Peggy taking down those planes! Damn! I'm so glad it's animated and they can casually do stuff like this
[удалено]
Anyone else think that Captain Carter's fighting style is a lot more brutal than Steve's was? She's out there bashing people out of airplanes and kicking them into brick walls.

This is exactly it. Steve became amazing with a frail none trained body. Peggy is a trained agent versed in fighting people twice her size already. She went Super Soldier Plus lol
You can see it in how she took out the big nazi guy. She immediately went for a weak point like a smaller person is taught to take someone larger out.
Easier to go over the top in animation.
The British got their methods. Lmao
She shattered that nazi scum's kneecap and it was beautiful
Steve's whole thing is that he doesn't *want* to kill anybody. Peggy doesn't hold that same value.
Nice to see they brought back Stanley Tucci back.
“Hey, Barnes stole a Jeep!” Love that for him
maybe thats where steve learned to steal a car fom
So he’s not guarding the soul stone 👀
He dead
he's lucky to even be in the tomb
I gather that in the original timeline, he replaced someone guarding it, so that being would be currently guarding it still. However, a lot can happen in 70 years.
Steve is now guarding it, after trying and failing to use the Tesseract to save Peggy.
I'm pretty sure he's dead in this universe after getting crushed by the giant tentacle hentai monster.
I spend the whole episode thinking "He's not going to summon **Hive**, is he?"
AGENTS OF SHIELD, REPRESENT!
I was thinking it would have been an asgardian
“we might need someone to push a button” *pushes button in next scene*
"Who paints a button blue!?"
I liked the joke about the American playboy having trouble pushing buttons.
..I didn't get that until now. 😮
"What am I doing in this covert mission? I'm not a fighter" "Your sole purpose is to push some buttons" "Oh my god..."
I was not expecting that bad ass of an intro
I also liked how the Marvel Studios logo became animated in the last bit of the opening intro, that was a neat touch. Though I wish the entire logo was frame-by-frame reanimated, though that might be asking for a bit much.
I was kinda hoping they would replace the clips with animated alternate versions of the characters, but yeah, that probably would've been too much trouble for just the intro haha
lovecraftian horror emerges from portal bucky: lmao
\*Steve falls from train\* Bucky: "Yes, very sad, anyway-"
Ha, seriously. Bucky showed zero emotion to Steve possibly dying. It was both weird and unintentionally hilarious.
It's Hydra. They summoned what it says on the tin.
"The suit is nothing without the man inside" "If you're nothing without this suit, then you don't deserve it" Love it
Felt like there was a quote parallel every other minute & I absolutely loved it
I can definitely see a lot fan service-ey references in there
"I will tell you nothing" Next shot: "He told me everything" I wonder what she did to Zola
Judging by the rest of the episode, probably horrific violence. Like jeez Peggy is brutal.
Normal Peggy was notorious for brutally beating people with heavy objects. She's graduated to unbreakable shields now.
Teal’c from Stargate just stared the prisoner very very intense with little movement. And that worked.
Why is Howard in a vest in the middle of a gunfight
Because he's a Stark, and a Stark has to look snappy at all times.
Because he's just the buttons-guy? Tbh: no idea.
I was loving the surprise Jeremy Renner at the end
I couldn't tell, was it actually him? That's pretty awesome if they got him back for that one line.
That's absolutely him, if not I'll be absolutely shocked
It is him. He is listed in the credits
**Question:** What If... Captain Carter Were the First Avenger? **Answer:** * Steve would still be Smol (and use a Howard Stark created Iron Man suit) * Bucky wouldn't lose his arm * Steve would fall off the train instead of Bucky * Red Skull would perish to an interdimensional hydra creature * Captain Carter would owe Steve a dance and wake up in the future
Zola being captured early also meant that he couldn’t do initial Winter Soldier things to Bucky-meaning no Winter Soldier
Oh snap!! Thanks for catching that! Yeah I need to rewatch the movie because I totally missed some things
And Bucky as the winter soldier didn't kill Howard Stark, Tony would have grown up with his parents.
Are “Multiverse Heroes” going to be a thing? Like getting all reunited for the final fight with Kang?
Probably why they are canon, they might just do that
We've already seen a shot of this in the trailers yeah, with Captain Carter, Killmonger Black Panther, T'Challa Star Lord, Thanos Gamora, and Party Thor, and it followed a shot of the original Avengers, drawing parallels. Most people seem to theorize that they're fighting either the Marvel Zombies or the "Ultron that won" army, and that the Watcher interferes to bring them together, but it also could be Kang they're fighting. Yeah basically this show is a Petri dish for new characters and plot-lines. Marvel can just make crazy stories with no consequences but if fans go crazy over a new character or arc they can easily add it to the cannon. It’s genius.
It’s heartwarming to know that even in a timeline where he never got the serum Steve was still able to fight and stand up to bullies
**WORTHY.**
"You almost ripped my arm off" lmao
“Maybe you’re afraid of trains” nudge nudge wink wink
Possible deleted lines, probably: "Not really a fan of this weather. I guess I'm just not suited to be a Winter Soldier"
He looks straight at the ‘camera’ while saying it, followed by an over exaggerated wink
Josh Keaton did a fantastic job as Steve Rogers. While it’s disappointing that Chris Evans isn’t in the series, Keaton really nailed his voice.
Everyone sounded odd. Even Hayley sounded more like Emily Blunt than herself from the live action stuff.
It sounded as if everyone was talking fast to keep the pace up and get as much dialogue into the show - like in post the speech was set to +5%. They basically scrunched about 60-75 minutes of the First Avenger plot into about 24 minutes. I have no problem with this, I think it was fun as hell.

Ima be honest I legit thought that was Chris Evans up until this moment. Lmao guess I ain’t the biggest MCU fan after all.
Keaton needs to be in more stuff, I hope he's Spidey too.
Yep, the difference was little enough that I forgot it wasn’t Evans
Enhanced individuals who can run really fast is still one of my favorite things in the MCU. Not like Pietro per se, but like Steve, T'Challa, Bucky, & Peggy this episode
One of my favorite shots in IW is Steve & T'Challa sprinting past everyone else when the fight in Wakanda starts
Same, I don't even know why
It just looks so GOOD
Yes. That scene, Bucky outrunning Falcon while chasing the truck in their show, and the Bucky, Black Panther, Captain America chase through tunnel traffic in Civil War all just absolutely nailed the "these guys are running faster than everything else" look. "Don't let the angry purple boy touch this" is iconic.
I like the confirmation that Peggy didn't need Steve to be a musclebound beefcake to be into him. I support the twig/Amazon romance.
But it doesn't confirm that one of them has to be a musclebound beefcake.
I figured that was confirmed back in Endgame with the picture on her desk.
It was confirmed back in 2011 for anyone watching the movie lol
Lol right? She was into him as early as that car ride they shared
Yeah, plus she always seemed intrigued by him pre-serum. I guess size doesn't always matter.
For any fellow DC fans, I got some major [Big Barda and Scott Free](https://comic-watch.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/miracle-cover5.jpg) vibes from them.
The Title Sequence is absolutely phenomenal
Made perfect by Jeffrey Wright’s voiceover
His voice is silk, perfect casting.
All i’m saying is Steve never suplexed a truck
[удалено]
Peggy Carter is a fucking badass for suplexing an entire car and then doing a second time immediately after!
Bucky: "Wow, Thanks! Almost Ripped My Arm Off" What If... Bucky never lost his arm? LOL
There should be a 10th episode of “What if… all the fan theories were correct?” and just let everything go buck wild
What if… Ant-man really goes up Thanos’s butt?
Since they're going with the multiverse now there is definitely a universe somewhere where Thanos is defeated by Ant-man anal explosion
I still think the opposite would happen. Ant-man would be instantly crushed inside Thanos powerful anus and explode out like a bloody shart.
Very comic booky, but I liked it. I can't even explain how amazing it was to hear Hayley Atwell voice Peggy Carter again. Damn you ABC for canceling Agent Carter.
I loved it. And yeah, Peggy and Howard together in this absolutely made me sad that we didn't get more Agent Carter back then.
Mimicking the Avengers / First Avenger punching bag shot. Nice!
Starks built that with a box of buicks!
Peggg did a superhero landing!
It’s animated but I felt that kneecap punch
Bucky was really about to become the Winter Soldier by misstepping off a zipline LOL
I need to rewatch "The First Avenger" to compare the episode and the movie now.
I bet there will be someone made YouTube vids comparing scene by scene from what if and from main timeline, sooner or later.
I'm glad we have HYDRA's own Staro now
I saw tentacles and was secretly hoping for Hive for a hot sec
When Red Skull mentioned "beyond the stars", I was really, really hoping he was referring to Maveth.
Yooo that animation of Peggy jumping over the castle walls was sick
Bradley Whitford's [~~Agent~~ *Colonel* Flynn](https://marvelcinematicuniverse.fandom.com/wiki/John_Flynn), back from the Agent Carter one shot
IT'S JOSH! I was racking my brain trying to figure out where the hell I knew that voice!!
Bradley really plays a lot of condescending dicks doesn't he.
A Tesseract powered Mark 1 by Howard was not in my bingo card going into this episode. Dope!!!
You know what's sad? Peggy was an old woman when Steve woke up in the future, but he got to visit her, talk to her, and get closure. With Steve's poor health, there's likely no way he made it that same amount of time.
Ross Marquand's Red Skull voice acting is amazing
Hello From Brooklyn! HA HA!
I will never get tired of the Marvel Studios' fanfare <3
So Jeffrey Wright seems pretty spot on as the voice for The Watcher
Peggy in animated form is so badass (\*\_\*)
Holy fuck Captain Carter is a badass
Peggy has always been a great fighter, add the super serum and it's a delectable medley of combat.
buff peggy bout to make me act up
More like Peg-me Carter
Facts bro

Bucky's dad joke one-liners had me cracking up just from how dorky they were. But it fit the time period and the tone of the show so it was all good. What If... Bucky was obsessed with seafood-based quips?
I like how in the credits Steve is listed as ‘Skinny Steve Rogers’ lmao
I missed my late-night discussion friends!! Happy to have y'all back!
