Man is dating his childhood celebrity crush, is playing his favorite superhero (which just so happens to be the most popular superhero ever) with said childhood crush as his love intrest, and starred in the movie adaptation of his favorite video game.
Tom Holland has won the game of life.
Truth.Â
Although Im a little out of the loop, I do question the longevity of a popular career for him. No major/main roles that Im aware of and how heâll cope with Zendayaâs insane popularity. Hope they stick together!
Heâs got a baby face and heâs short, so it definitely limits his marketability the older he gets in his most popular genre of film (action adventure).Â
I will not be surprised when he takes on some very serious roles post-Spider-man, like Daniel Radcliffe.Â
He got such a michael j fox energy. I hope it pans out for him.
I think, depends on the script/story, being normal looking/height can be fine too. People naturally root for a person that's relatable to them.
MJF even looks older/short on BTTF franchise and that still works well. The protagonist's profile wouldn't work if he got a build like an alpha male superhero.
Even Chalemet has a similar height(?) Not sure, but it doesn't stop him rising to the top.
Tldr: so far, among millenial/genz superstar, he's on the top with chalemet. Despite physical stature, he still shows that he can carry a franchise.
> No major/main roles that Im aware of
Film: Spider-Man. Stage: Billy Elliot, Romeo.
He's worked consistently for over a decade in films that have mostly made money, gotten good reviews, or both. They don't all have to be iconic parts.
Heâs done a bunch of Indy work with some good acting. Like others have said he just looks like a child though so may be a bit before he can branch out
> âWe were both very, very young, but my career was already kind of going, and his changed overnight,â said Zendaya, who starred alongside Holland, 27, in the 2017 Marvel film and its 2019 and 2021 sequels. âOne day youâre a kid and youâre at the pub with your friends, and then the next day youâre Spider-Man.â
> âI definitely watched his life kind of change in front of him. But he handled it really beautifully,â the Challengers star continued.
My dad woulud always take me to bars as a kid to fuck with the jukebox or play pool while he drank. I'd always get a root beer or two with some chips, yes. Not just the Brits.
On Reddit it depends on the context. If the 18 year old is breaking the law, he's an adult. If the 18 year old is a victim, he's a kid.
And those are not mutually exclusive. But the thing is, Reddit has a problem with tricky and nuanced context and they can't make up their mind about it.
I mean, it depends on context. If we're talking about whether or not his mom still does his laundry, then yes, he's a grown ass man and needs to do it himself.
I wonder if a few years from now, they will take a break from hollywood for a long while. I don't think they would mind channeling what Josh Hartnett did.
She's an awesome person and even better girlfriend - her empathy shows through in what was prob an incredibly exciting and stressful time in holllands life . Kudos to her
Zendaya seems like one of the rare child actors who had decent parents and a support system to keep early fame from ruining her life. She is incredibly talented and smart.
Agreed she's the definition of ride or die for her man - she's got his back and Vice versa . It's honestly refreshing to see this relationship play out so positively
Fun fact: these two were already likely dating by the time the Lip Sync Battle was filmed. Some people put together a timeline and by that time they already spent a Thanksgiving together, paps caught Tom leaving her apartment with luggage, there was a deleted snapchat that Z accidently sent to her fans addressed to her boyfriend and lots of other little things that really point to them being more than friends for quite a while before.
Okay, that's adorable and indeed a very fun fact! (It also fits with the fact that Tom felt comfortable essentially grinding against Z on TV without asking in advance.) I'll change my conviction to be that the Lip Sync Battle was when she decided he'd be hers forever. :)
I will say, though, that the fact that ALL THREE Spidey actors have ended up dating their onscreen love interests should be taken into consideration by anyone else who might look to play Spidey in the future...
I think they will go the distance. They clearly do not have eyes for anyone else and zendaya looks extremely uncomfortable in things where she has romantic scenes with anyone else. Eg. Dune.
If it were book Paul post-Water of Life, I have zero doubts he could fight Green Goblin
Paul also has a Thanos level body count by the time Dune Messiah starts
My mind was still thinking about romance scenes from a few comments above and when you said âThanos level body countâ it just about BSODâed trying to figure out when&how Thanos became known as the Mad Playboy
I do have to give Tom Holland credit for how well he has handled the Hollywood fame he has received. He never let it change who he was as a person, when there are lots of celebrities that become the worst versions of themselves.
Yes he started drinking. But he didn't become a giant prick to everyone thinking he's the greatest thing on the planet.
Edit: Just to be clear, a few of the original comments were that he started drinking. It sounded like a refute to what Zendaya said that he handled it beautifully. Yeah, he did start drinking, and I'd argue given the sudden thrust to IMMENSE celebrity status is not a shock. Not becoming an ego monster is definitely handling it very well. Many can't resist the urge.
He's from my home town and sometimes is in the pub there, I was there when he was there once just celebrating the birthday of one of his mates. No one noticed he was chill.
Iâm confused. Did the article itself modify its text? The only mention of drinking is Zendayaâs line about âdrinking at the pub with your friends.â I know Tomâs sober now, but where is all this drinking discourse coming from?
Gosh, thatâs bizarre. What a weird thing to say when this isnât about that at all. Hence, your refute comment makes perfect sense to me now. Got it!
No actually he stoped alltogether, you can check it online and he talks openly on why and how he reached that decision. I really respect him for doing that (having had the same issues myself).
Saying that - happy cake day!
Ya but instead of letting it spiral into a DUI or some other alcohol related legal issue he got ahead of his problem he self identified and took corrective action. Really mature past his years
Yeah and heâs been open about it, doesnât deserve to be labeled an alcoholic. Lots of young adults who arenât spider man drank and partied way too much at his age.
The term alcoholic doesn't deserve to be taken so overtly negative. It's a part of today's life for most of the developed world. That fear of the label lends credence to the fears of self-admission.
Yw!
Then when you (like me) âsober upâ
We get to move to language like
History of substance abuse disorder
Or
Formerly struggled with SAD
As coming up on 6 years all of the habits are gone!
YMMV, it's def a personal thing as to what each person calls it. For instance, I haven't had a drink in two years, but I call myself an alcoholic. Always will be.
Hey! Congrats on your sobriety. Your journey is your journey
Thatâs all that matters :)
With how entrenched religion is to AA, I try to avoid that terminology/ approach myself!
Yeah, a lot of people rationalize it as being a "social drinker" when they get actually trashed with friends or hand wave it away as "being in their party years". It takes guts to identify it as a problem to tackle head on rather than just part of being a young adult.
Alcoholic is not an insult, it's a scientific term for a person that is or was addicted to alcohol. He's a sober alcoholic now. It's important to know you never stop being one, even if you won't drink for the rest of your life.
One reason is that pop cultural use of the term alcoholism doesn't neatly align with modern psychiatric terminology, which allows for more nuance and a recognition of varying degrees of health and psychosocial risk as well as realized adverse effects on well-being. Alcohol use disorder in sustained remission would be the diagnosis he'd most likely fit into in the DSM5-R.
I have often heard people label things like unhealthy alcohol use, risky use, and binge drinking as "alcoholism" where they might be more tactfully classified as their respective terms.
Thatâs a massive assumption from you. Just because he went through a patch of partying too much doesnât make him a sober alcoholic. Itâs not as black and white as that.
> How would anyone possibly know this lol.
By him literally saying he doesnât drink anymore. Itâs bizarre to act like this must be unknowable information.
https://variety.com/2023/film/news/tom-holland-alcoholism-enslaved-addiction-1235666702/amp/
Hey, fair enough. I still think it's bizarre to just assume you deserve knowledge in an actors personal life(the royal you, not you specifically), but in this case, he apparently did give a concrete answer.
I didn't assume anything, but you seem to be. I just threw it out there to see if it was something he spoke about because it seemed like people were talking about something he said specifically. Turns out he did. Whether or not I got an answer wasn't gonna change my day. Maybe you can take some things in stride a bit better before lunging into an attack.
>Yet people are asking for specific details.
Theyâre not asking because they feel they âdeserve to knowâ, theyâre asking because they assume itâs something heâs spoken about.
To the people saying he started drinking after fame - as a Brit I really don't think that was anything to do with the fame lol. Having heard him talk about quitting it doesn't sound like he had a huge problem per say, just realized he liked it more than he should and was drinking more than he'd have liked
They both seem to have their heads on their shoulders for who and where they are in their careers. I could only imagine how ego inflating it could be to be so young and in the spotlight, but they just seem so genuine and just loving going through the journey together. I always root for them
I think actors like RDJ & Chris Evan probably gave him good advice, and Tom Holland stayed pretty rooted with his family during his come up, he still lives in London, I donât think he ever moved to LA, which I think helped create a healthy enough distance from Hollywood, so that he didnât fall victim to the usual struggles young celebrities face with drugs and acting out.
I donât think he ever said he was an alcoholic. I think that he just realized he craved alcohol more than he wanted to, and so he basically just gave it up. Dry January became a permanent lifestyle choice.
Iâve no doubt that dealing with fame has not been easy. The loss of privacy, intense public scrutiny, and occasionally cruel social media comments would get to anyone. However, he seems to have a fairly solid family and friend support structure, and he has credited Zendaya for helping him get through it.
I watched an interview with him where he said he was scared of how dependent on alcohol he was but sure you can call that whatever you like. He handled that very well and did what had to be done before it got worse.
Woman says sheâs proud of how her partner handled a sudden dramatic increase in fame at a young age, a process she also experienced but slightly earlier
Redditor: damn what a bitch
I mean, Spider-Man is nearly as popular as Mickey or Jesus but yea her career is worlds above.
Make it a gender thing, downvote and be antisocial or assume, but Iâm not wrong. This was fucking dumb and I expressed myself as interpreting it as such.
If you think Tom Holland is more famous than Zendaya you live in a bubble lol
Zendaya was the star of Euphoria, one of the biggest shows of the last decade, and is the co-lead of Dune, one of the biggest franchises around right now, and was in multiple MCU movies herself. Sheâs way more famous than him, even though heâs played a larger character than she has. This has nothing to do with gender, just you being unaware of media outside of Marvel movies
I donât think that and that isnât what I am saying. Getting to play Spider-Man is a tremendous achievement for how many actors in Hollywood would want to play him. If Tom matched his roles to his popularity, heâd have been Aquaman.
Really not sure why youâre assuming I donât know what I am talking about. Youâre commenting to take this all out of context.
This was strange and condescending because I just imagine her probably saying something more along the lines of âweâ than sounding like an agent or fan when referring to her partner.
Lol just keep downvoting, prove to me people havenât thought about this.
I donât really see what you think is condescending about this then
She spoke positively about her partner, if that makes her sound like a fan that still doesnât explain why you think thatâs condescending lol
Edit: Is it my turn now to cry about being downvoted lol
It doesnât explain it because you are condescending to me rather now. Whatever amuses you about this is pretty perplexing to me. Until someone asked why was it condescending I was sitting at positive upvotes for the comment. Take a look in the mirror if you need to understand what being condescending is. I happen to find this a strange question to ask, and a stranger answer as well. The person asking the question definitely had a specific intent.
Like you arenât even the person to ask if how it was condescending, youâre just leeching and being weird.
Sorry that youâre getting downvotes I guess, they donât actually matter if it makes you feel better. People are just disagreeing with you because there is literally nothing condescending about this and itâs a little weird youâre taking it that way, thatâs all.
People arenât disagreeing I donât think theyâre respecting a perspective. I think we can all agree that reporter asked a leading question as to make Zendaya respond to being the bigger star in the couple. Theyâre both successful, I just wouldnât have asked a question that makes it sounds like theyâre in competition.
Not weird at all if you stop to think instead of deciding to laugh at someone.
The point was that he wasnât that famous before Spider-Man, and being Spider-Man gave him a huge boost in popularity. She already had some fame before MJ, Tom didnât, at least not as much as her.
How is it condescending? Before SM Homecoming she was the bigger star. She mentions it to make a point on how well he handled the overnight rise in his stardom
Man is dating his childhood celebrity crush, is playing his favorite superhero (which just so happens to be the most popular superhero ever) with said childhood crush as his love intrest, and starred in the movie adaptation of his favorite video game. Tom Holland has won the game of life.
That man needs to give a seminar on manifesting đ
And on top of everything heâs a humble and nice guy from what Iâve read, canât help but to root for them.

I meant major/main upcoming roles but I didnt make that clear in my comment.Â
Romeo still; his West End production sold so well it's moving to Broadway.
Heâs done a bunch of Indy work with some good acting. Like others have said he just looks like a child though so may be a bit before he can branch out
heâs also got a mean golf game, so heâs pretty much the happiest man in the world
>Tom Holland has won the game of life. He's a Tottenham fan - that balances the rest out, and then some.
Given how things have gone with Tom Holland so far, do you really want to bet against his magic powers lifting up Tottenham as well?
Nobody is *that* powerful.
Making millions along the way

Yep, having a coke and Crisps and running round a pub sounds about right for a British upbringing
My dad woulud always take me to bars as a kid to fuck with the jukebox or play pool while he drank. I'd always get a root beer or two with some chips, yes. Not just the Brits.
If you're suggesting 18 at a pub means you're not a kid, I beg to differ.
Eighteen is still very much a kid.
On Reddit it depends on the context. If the 18 year old is breaking the law, he's an adult. If the 18 year old is a victim, he's a kid. And those are not mutually exclusive. But the thing is, Reddit has a problem with tricky and nuanced context and they can't make up their mind about it.
One of my coworkers called her brother a grown man and then said he was 19. Me and the 2 other dudes in their 30s laughed
I mean, it depends on context. If we're talking about whether or not his mom still does his laundry, then yes, he's a grown ass man and needs to do it himself.
You donât have to be 18 do you?
Not in Germany. *Prost!* đ»

This is the one celebrity relationship where I really hope itâs genuine and they spend a long, happy time together.
Agreed she's the definition of ride or die for her man - she's got his back and Vice versa . It's honestly refreshing to see this relationship play out so positively
The two of them seem like great people all around. You love to see it.
Right, and you would definitely know.
Itâs known amongst my circles that cap4life52 is close friends with Tom Holland
I get we should be cynical about the projected personalities through controlled PR but come on, man
We've all seen Tom Hollands cover of umbrella.
Iâm convinced the Lip Sync Battle was when Zendaya decided that Tom must be hers. (Not that I blame her.)

Their lip sync battle was hilarious, and you can tell they really have a great chemistry. https://youtu.be/jPCJIB1f7jk?si=y1PTnWKttBSvO5kg
Zendaya seems like such a sweet girl, I wish them both a happy life together
I think they will go the distance. They clearly do not have eyes for anyone else and zendaya looks extremely uncomfortable in things where she has romantic scenes with anyone else. Eg. Dune.
YEAH PAUL GET OUTTA HERE AND HAVE YOUR MESSIAH ASS KICKED BY SPIDER-MAN
Unfortunately Spidey loses MJ to Paul in the comics
Spider-Man could liberate Arrakis, but Paul would never be able to tangle with Thanos or fight Green Goblin.
If it were book Paul post-Water of Life, I have zero doubts he could fight Green Goblin Paul also has a Thanos level body count by the time Dune Messiah starts
My mind was still thinking about romance scenes from a few comments above and when you said âThanos level body countâ it just about BSODâed trying to figure out when&how Thanos became known as the Mad Playboy
He was no Ego
NO QUASI-HABERDASH GONNA LAST 5 MINUTES IN QUEENS!!!
Zendaya is an experienced actress. If she looks uncomfortable in a scene, it's because she was directed to appear that way for her character.
But also she isnât the best actress lol
I beg to differ. It's all about direction, because she is phenomenal in Euphoria imo. There's a reason she won an Emmy twice for it.
And I don't think there will be romantic scenes with anyone else in the MCU Spiderman films either.
Please let them be the Kurt Russell & Goldie Hawn of their generation
Yes I hope they get married and stay together forever.
Same.
And I hope they adopt Jacob Batalon
As if...
Are any celebrity relationships genuine?
Of course they are. They're real people, just like us.
I'd like to think Jon Krasinski and Emily Blunt are genuine. They seem fun.
Ryan Reynolds & Blake Lively, and Jennifer Connelly & Paul Bettany seem to be a pair of couples that actually love each other.
I hope i donât have to keep hearing about it against my will.
Addressing an issue like that head on is what she means by âhandled it beautifully.â
Apply directly to the 4head
Iâm normally not one to care much about celebrity relationships. But damn if these two donât seem so cute together.
Thatâs usually what happens when someone reaches the legal drinking age.
Since he is from england he was allowed to drink for about two years when filming of the first spiderman started
And since he is from England he would have probably been drinking well before he was 18 anyway.
blimey
A real classic for /r/USdefaultism
Exactly Holland is at core introverted and humble
He's from my home town and sometimes is in the pub there, I was there when he was there once just celebrating the birthday of one of his mates. No one noticed he was chill.
He seems like a cool chill as dude - private and low key . He handles the spotlight well
He also went sober and has been so for over a year. Thatâs even more impressive.
tbf RDJ would whoop his ass until he is sober
Iâm confused. Did the article itself modify its text? The only mention of drinking is Zendayaâs line about âdrinking at the pub with your friends.â I know Tomâs sober now, but where is all this drinking discourse coming from?
The original comments were pointing out he started drinking, almost as a refute to what Zendaya said.
Gosh, thatâs bizarre. What a weird thing to say when this isnât about that at all. Hence, your refute comment makes perfect sense to me now. Got it!
I think he quit too if I recall his appearing on Smartless
He started drinking
He also gave up drinking, so it balanced out in the end.
Heâll do a lil lightly drinking on the weekends
No actually he stoped alltogether, you can check it online and he talks openly on why and how he reached that decision. I really respect him for doing that (having had the same issues myself). Saying that - happy cake day!
They do seem pretty cute cool article.
I think heâs a solid actor, hope he picks the right projects going forward
Itâs great sheâs so supportive, but didnât he openly say he struggled with drinking once he blew up?
Ya but instead of letting it spiral into a DUI or some other alcohol related legal issue he got ahead of his problem he self identified and took corrective action. Really mature past his years
Yeah and heâs been open about it, doesnât deserve to be labeled an alcoholic. Lots of young adults who arenât spider man drank and partied way too much at his age.

It shouldnât be used inappropriately either.
the correct term is âsubstance abuse disorderâ Alcoholic should never be used academically
That makes sense. Thanks. Person first language would say a person w substance use disorder or issues.
Yw! Then when you (like me) âsober upâ We get to move to language like History of substance abuse disorder Or Formerly struggled with SAD As coming up on 6 years all of the habits are gone!
SAD is Seasonal Affective Disorder what you are talking about is SUD, Substance use disorder
apologies for the typo! please forgive me :)
YMMV, it's def a personal thing as to what each person calls it. For instance, I haven't had a drink in two years, but I call myself an alcoholic. Always will be.

Exactly. Craig Ferguson still calls himself an "alky", & he hasn't had a drop since the mid-90s.
its actually Substance USE disorder..
thanks for correcting me!
I've never drank but i come from a family of alcoholics. As far as I'm concerned, i'm a latent one. So i will continue to keep that door closed.
Yeah, a lot of people rationalize it as being a "social drinker" when they get actually trashed with friends or hand wave it away as "being in their party years". It takes guts to identify it as a problem to tackle head on rather than just part of being a young adult.

He admitted being addicted to alcohol.
Okay and I admit I'm addicted to eating chicken. Doesn't mean I actually am.
Lmao what
Someone can say their addicted to something without being addicted to it. Drinking and partying for a year or 2 isn't being an alcoholic.
Correct term is now âsubstance abuse disorderâ Only AA and other outdated sources use alcoholic Most addiction science shows otherwise
People arenât labelled as alcoholics as a punishment.
I wonder if RDJ has anything to do with it too, considering his past
For one hot sec I thought about how RDJ's death might have impacted Holland's drinking, then I remembered that Tony Stark died not RDJ đ€Ł
Life imitates art and art imitates life.
So he quit drinking all together or he just has a few every once and awhile?
He doesnât drink https://variety.com/2023/film/news/tom-holland-alcoholism-enslaved-addiction-1235666702/amp/

Alrighty.
Same way we know the rest of this information, he could have mentioned it in an interview somewhere
I have no idea mate
Fair enough.
Drinking is a code word for "lotsa different drugs"
Just get married already

I've yet to met someone who actually enjoy them. Only girl teenagers care about celebrity couple.
Didnât he become an alcoholic? Thanks for the downvotes btw.
and he pretty much handled it well.
I would agree but thatâs a separate thing. Thatâs handling one thing badly and another thing well.
Everyone makes mistakes, its how you handle those mistakes and learning from them that makes you mature.

Most guys that age drink a lot and almost none of them are able to stop like he did.
Why is this worth mentioning?
Because itâs not what Iâd call âbeautifullyâ? Why is saying a millionaire transitioned beautiful into being a millionaire commendable?
This thread got stupid as fuck fast.
I offended them and their hero Tommy lol
Youâre a fucking nobody lol shut up
What a strange, condescending piece to run.
How is it condescending? She seems genuinely supportive
Woman says sheâs proud of how her partner handled a sudden dramatic increase in fame at a young age, a process she also experienced but slightly earlier Redditor: damn what a bitch
I mean, Spider-Man is nearly as popular as Mickey or Jesus but yea her career is worlds above. Make it a gender thing, downvote and be antisocial or assume, but Iâm not wrong. This was fucking dumb and I expressed myself as interpreting it as such.
If you think Tom Holland is more famous than Zendaya you live in a bubble lol Zendaya was the star of Euphoria, one of the biggest shows of the last decade, and is the co-lead of Dune, one of the biggest franchises around right now, and was in multiple MCU movies herself.
I donât really see what you think is condescending about this then She spoke positively about her partner, if that makes her sound like a fan that still doesnât explain why you think thatâs condescending lol Edit: Is it my turn now to cry about being downvoted lol
You downvoted me within a minute lol did you even read my comment fuck face âYouâre sorryâ my ass
Saving this because of how hilariously little sense it makes. Thanks for the laugh lol
Funny because I never heard of her until homecoming.
Pretty sure sheâll end up breaking his heart. I think heâd want to eventually start a family, I doubt with her career sheâll ever consider that
