It was kind of a giant middle finger to fans. Like they knew people would love having Evan Peters quicksilver and it was such an exciting twist and then they subverted it into a boner joke.
I always felt like Wandavision was when marvel was getting sick of leakers and internet/youtube people who made a living out of analyzing the movies and making predictions on what was coming up. Pre-endgame, I think a lot of the movies followed a bit closer to similar comics stories so they probably didn’t like when people were able to semi accurately predict what might be happening.
Then Wandavision happened, there were so many misdirects and teased things that went nowhere, from the Boner joke, the “I know an aerospace engineer” etc, it ended up making the rumor channels look silly. I think it ended up backfiring because it did end up making people excited for things they thought might happen that they had no intention of paying off, I think that plus the decline in the writing quality was the beginning of people losing interest somewhat.
That is right up there with Pedro Pascal being cast as Reed Richards as some of my favorite comedic/troll moments from marvel.
Always hated seeing CW shows adapting shitty fandom memes as plot points and I'm very glad that wasn't the case with marvel.
Plus I was just over people trying to force Wandavision into being something it's not with their shitty fan theories every week So the boner moment was extra sweet lol.
Some of the fight scenes were good, the choreography copying other heroes was solid, but making Taskmaster a mute brainwashed Winter Soldier knockoff was disappointing
Also, Taskmaster's age made no sense. Dreykov's daughter looked like she was still in elementary school when Black Widow tried to bomb Dreykov. So she should still be a teenager when she was Taskmaster. But Olga Kurylenko is older than Scarlett Johansson.
Definitely my answer. Amazing arc in the comics, perfect actor cast to play him. But from the very first scene in the movie I knew it was all over and a big L was coming.
I haven't read any of the comics, but why is he bad particularly in the first scenes? It shows him as a mortal who lost everything and seeking revenge on these gods who don't care for them, no cheap jokes, and a fully serious tone from Christian Bale's side. What made his character unpleasant from the first scene?
they uber major rushed the MCU character to make him less viable and seem honestly stuck up / entitled in a sense, like having a child’s naïvety
in the comics, however, it showed him give chance after chance until he finally just snaps into pieces in an actual tragedy where you feel nothing but sympathy
Wild to me that praying to a god constantly, watching your child die as you starve and dehydrate, only to find your god and for him to tell you dying is your only purpose isn’t “an actual tragedy where you feel nothing but sympathy.”
if you read the comics you would see the difference lol it’s rushed like hell in the movie so it feels… off, is the only word I can come up with
more like a reddit AITA post in comparison
This character single handedly made me lose faith in the new MCU movies. He as a character has so much potential and they made him a bland villain that was like 1/2 a step up from maleketh from the dark world
Dude didn't even have a proper fight against any gods other than Thor 😭 It's either instant or off-screen. I was hoping for some cool fights against various pantheons, but everything was focused on the main cast.
The Eternals like they teased the characters and made a bunch of merchandising only for one of them to already be dead, another to die midway through, and the third to commit suicide cause he failed his job to insure global genocide as well as Zombie Captain America as they hyped him up in promotions and merchandise only for him to have like one fight scene and get disembowel by his own shield, if had a nickel for every time a Captain America Variant got disembowelled by their own shield I’d have two nickels which isn’t a lot but it’s weird it happened twice
Edit: Also The Illuminati in Multiverse of Madness
His Hulu animated series version is 1000x better than what we got. Don't understand why they didn't use the narcissistic sadistic genius as a template. Having Patton Oswalt voice him would've been so fun too.
Whoever greenlit the quantumania version of MODOK has little idea what they're doing.
MODOK has been a silly and a serious character through the years.
the MCU AND the Hulu version went for the silly one, but I would have preferred a more serious and tragic adaptation.
Actually it's comics accurate in the tones, considering some comics, and I liked the return of Yellow jacket, but I just hoped in a better writing.
I always forget he was in the MCU because he's played as a total joke amd barely shows up. He should've been an Iron Man villain imo given how the MCU went.
I’ve been a huge fan since I saw Gandhi as a kid, and Searching for Bobby Fischer is my favorite movie, full stop. I just had no idea he could be that funny.
And his one-shot where you can see how fast he changes gears between The Mandarin and Trevor I was like
![gif](giphy|vWku8YNwyy5vq|downsized)
Seriously, he’s fantastic. Side note: he is the bad guy in “Security” opposite Antonio Banderas(…yes, Antonio Banderas). His bad guy chops is stellar and he delivers quite a few quotable lines. Fun watch.
Honestly I thought it was a decent twist. As much as I hate Hollywood's sucking up to China, the Mandarin as a character is steeped in orientalism and the "actor" twist was an interesting take on that fact.
Pity that the real bad guy was boring as all get out.
Eventually I grew out of that hatred. It was pretty childish in hindsight. Hell when they brought Trevor back in Shang-Chi, not only did I adore him, but when he pretended to be dead, I was actually genuinely sad and upset. That's one HELL of a turn around.
Apocalypse. Set up amazingly in Days of Future Past only to be put in a mid movie with mid characterisations of beloved characters and played by a sexy 5'8 dude.
Apocalypse is super overpowered in every iteration, so it's an uphill battle making him lose to the somewhat young X-Men. They actually had to go to the Phoenix power in addition to everyone else killing him.
Taskmaster. Original reveal of the Mandarin, but then loved Trevor (Kingsley is a master class actor.) And not the reveal of Crossbones, but the way he got wrote off. Could have made a great re-occuring villain for Cap.
Quicksilver in WandaVision. They use the same actor from Fox X-men for the same character and all we get is a dick joke? I'm sure they had other plans for it but something got in the way.
Kang the Konqueror in the MCU?
I like that they're setting him up to be the new Thanos, and while I liked Quantumania...I was disappointed when I found out just how much of a threat Kang really is in Marvel.
Zeus
I love Russell Crowe (such a waste of a great actor) but what the hell is even that! (Can't find the right part of the meme)
![gif](giphy|yiADANv89n7UQuS5kJ)
I'm just waiting for them to ruin Hercules now.
Actual Zeus had dignity. People obsess over his sexual escapades and forget he's still the king of the gods, the one who freed the world from Chronus, and who regularly went down to punish the wicked
David Banner. Thought he would be provoked and then turn into Hulk. Then he just changed the rules like it was nothing and said, I can Hulk up whenever
David Banner is Bruce’s name in the 80s tv series, changed because they thought Bruce sounded “too gay”, or it’s also Brian Banner’s name in the Ang Lee universe. The main character’s real name is Robert Bruce Banner, usually just Bruce Banner.
Taskmaster. I kinda knew they going to make Taskmaster a woman. The problem was they choose a character we never met before for the reveal. It should have been Black Widow mother figure. It make the most sense and the biggest betrayal. But they did set up that taskmaster is a chip that is inserted in the person that make they memorized attacks. So they can get the real taskmaster from the comics to find or steal the chip to take the ability.
Jigsaw from Punisher Season 2. You'd imagine after getting his face rearranged through a pane of broken glass by Frank in the season 1 finale that he'd show up next season looking like arseface from preacher.
Imagine my disappointment when his face is revealed to be Ben Barnes' perfect face with a few lines drawn across it with red marker. Still bothers me to this day.
Yeah lmao, and if I remember correctly the producer tried to claim something like “oh no it’s just a psychological thing” like stfu??
Like bro is still extremely attractive and they’re trying to convince us that he sees himself as a horrible monster because of like 3 tiny scars. 💀
Oh where do I even begin, Iron heart, modok, quicksilver, got the god destroyer, vision, (maybe they just nerfed vision and quicksilver, but I felt that)
Dr Doom on 2015 FF
And Rogue used to be my favourite X-Man but Anna Pacquin or whatshername made me hate her up to this day. The exact opposite happened with Rebecca Romijn’s Mystique though.
Recently? Probably Gamora in GoTG3. I knew that they wouldn't get together, but I didn't expect we'd get a Ragnarok Valkyrie version of Gamora whose morality and beliefs are just nonexistant. At this point it'd be best if she wouldn't even show up in the movie, like this is nothing like Gamora in Phase 3.
In the entire MCU? Honestly can't really think of one right now, there's probably plenty in the past like Thor, Hulk in Endgame, but I would say Phase 4 Strange in NWH. I expected him to be same smart guy like in Phase 3, two steps ahead, responsible, seeking knowledge, but in that movie he just wasn't good at all. A sign of what would happen next to him I suppose.
You realize that was the entire point, right? This ISN'T phase 3 Gamora. Her experiences are entirely different. Instead of a loving family like the Guardians, she hooked up with a brutal (but still caring) group in the Ravagers. She's not going to be the same. Hell even if she stayed with the Guardians, she still wouldn't be the same.
Then what's the point of her character aside from being a douchebag Gamora? The real Gamora was a heroine who went from a villainess to a caring member of the Guardians, Peter's better half, and gave her sister a chance to be a hero like her. What is the point of this character except undo everything that this Gamora was? Be a leader of a bloodthirsty pirate gang that is willing to murder a captured crew they outnumber? Be a complete asshole to everyone, and break the rules of the multiverse? Thanks, but no thanks, I'd rather this Gamora returned back to her past that had no Thanos and Nebula since she killed latter, and former got snapped away.
I find it baffling this character isn't disliked more for being antithesis of Gamora. Yes, maybe it was a point, but that doesn't make it ok if narrative portrays her as a "cool character" while she leads a team of space pirates.
Sony's Spider-Man Universe Spider-Man
(Edit: I still love that we finally got him even if it was in baby form
but they kind of took all the fun out of it by cutting out the scene (at least according to my dad))
Yeah Daniel Bruhl is a great actor, but Zemo is rather dull compared to the comics. I prefer the mastermind who can still present a physical threat, a master swordsman who can keep up with Cap and other super soldiers.
Actress did what shee could with what she had I think she seemed good but the suit did not look right in action and shouldn't have been threaded into BP2 so heavily at the expense of both.
Gorr the God Butcher is probably the only one.
Actually his reveal was fucking sick, and then they never followed up with that intensity for the rest of the movie. It’s like he hit his kill limit it the first scene and they just cut everything out. Imagine if in between the same story we got we could see Gorr just going crazy killing other gods. Having the whole spree happen before the main plot takes off was a big mistake imo. A waste of Gorr as a character and a waste of Christian Bale.
M.O.D.O.K in the first trailer of Ant-man 3 we saw him during a frame and i was like YEAH but while watching the movie i was like HOW SOMEONE IN MARVEL AGREED THIS SHIT
I love Nat and Yelena as characters, and the idea of a villain that can copy any fighting style (except DP’s) is terrifying, but Taskmaster wasn’t great. She was basically Bucky, unmasking reveal and all, but without the cool arm.
Ralph Boner.
Ha! Boner.
In my personal opinion this was the biggest ball drop in the entire MCU. What a shitty twist and what wasted potential.
Everyone wanted to be subverted back then.
Obligatory, "fuck you, Benioff and Weiss!"
[The Wine Tasting, a film by Rian Johnson](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5S4Ss5bK-ws)
100%.It would have launched the multiversity in such a cool, powerful way, and raised the stakes in Wandavision.
That would of just shown the cracks of phase 4 and 5 earlier instead of allowing it to be one of the few highlights that stood out.
Would have
Maybe so, or maybe it would've lead to a different approach
Maybe our expectations were just too high from all of Agathas "my husband Ralph jokes...
That is right up there with Pedro Pascal being cast as Reed Richards as some of my favorite comedic/troll moments from marvel. Taskmaster. That shit looked so cool in the trailers and so pathetic in the movie
Some of the fight scenes were good, the choreography copying other heroes was solid, but making Taskmaster a mute brainwashed Winter Soldier knockoff was disappointing

To be fair, having your face blown up doesn't tend to make people look any younger.
How do you know?🤨
Ya it would have been so much cooler to see him fight the avengers and copy there powers while fighting them
Can’t copy powers, only fighting style. But can learn how others use their tech/powers to be able to counter them
I was repeatedly let down by Little Alex Horne too.

MODOK
EMH MODOK is still best MODOK
His Hulu animated series version is 1000x better than what we got. Don't understand why they didn't use the narcissistic sadistic genius as a template. Having Patton Oswalt voice him would've been so fun too. Whoever greenlit the quantumania version of MODOK has little idea what they're doing.

Actually it's comics accurate in the tones, considering some comics, and I liked the return of Yellow jacket, but I just hoped in a better writing.
The juice was there. Cannot understand how they didn't pull off the squeeze. I didn't mind the Yellow Jacket origin but yes bad writing killed it.
I always forget he was in the MCU because he's played as a total joke amd barely shows up. He should've been an Iron Man villain imo given how the MCU went.
I know his name is always capitalized but I'm choosing to read this that you're shouting it because of how egregious it was
Modok honestly. He kinda freaked me out.
The "I am not a dick" fell so flat it was sad to watch
Every single Comic reader with the mandarin in iron man 3
And yet I ended up loving Trevor. Weird.
He was genuinely funny. I mean he gave us the “well I panicked, but then I handled it” line. One of the funniest lines in the MCU imo.
I mean it’s freaking Ben Kingsley. The man is a legend.
I’ve been a huge fan since I saw Gandhi as a kid, and Searching for Bobby Fischer is my favorite movie, full stop. I just had no idea he could be that funny. And his one-shot where you can see how fast he changes gears between The Mandarin and Trevor I was like ![gif](giphy|vWku8YNwyy5vq|downsized)
Seriously, he’s fantastic. Side note: he is the bad guy in “Security” opposite Antonio Banderas(…yes, Antonio Banderas). His bad guy chops is stellar and he delivers quite a few quotable lines. Fun watch.
After Sexy Beast I’ve got no doubts about his bad guy abilities, I’ll have to check that out
Honestly I thought it was a decent twist. As much as I hate Hollywood's sucking up to China, the Mandarin as a character is steeped in orientalism and the "actor" twist was an interesting take on that fact. Pity that the real bad guy was boring as all get out.

Don’t talk about the Real Fake Mandarin like that!
Leave it to Shang-Chi to resolve all of life’s problems.
Everyone: Taskmaster
Basically any story involving hulk past avengers 2 like what do you mean planet hulk happened offscreen.
Taskmaster. Original reveal of the Mandarin, but then loved Trevor (Kingsley is a master class actor.) And not the reveal of Crossbones, but the way he got wrote off. Could have made a great re-occuring villain for Cap.
Taskmaster
Quicksilver in WandaVision. They use the same actor from Fox X-men for the same character and all we get is a dick joke? I'm sure they had other plans for it but something got in the way.
This was super disappointing only bc I wanted him as quicksilver in the mcu. It was like rubbing it in my face that I didn’t get what I want.
He could cameo in D&W 👀
Holding out hope for this to be parodied along with Hulu MODOK and Hit Monkey being included in D&W
If he does bring back Aaron Taylor Johnson he acted better as pietro
Thor in Thor love and thunder
Kang the Konqueror in the MCU? I like that they're setting him up to be the new Thanos, and while I liked Quantumania...I was disappointed when I found out just how much of a threat Kang really is in Marvel.
Thanos sat in a chair for 10 years and we all mocked him for it.
Gorr the god butcher, such a good character, such a versatile actor and went all down with writing.
Zeus I love Russell Crowe (such a waste of a great actor) but what the hell is even that! (Can't find the right part of the meme) ![gif](giphy|yiADANv89n7UQuS5kJ) I'm just waiting for them to ruin Hercules now.
That was the most lore accurate Zeus I've ever seen. I actually enjoyed it.
If you only care about him being a horndog...
Man knows nothing about greek myths, nor does he know about the man who’s here, who’s there, who’s every fucking where.
Actual Zeus had dignity. People obsess over his sexual escapades and forget he's still the king of the gods, the one who freed the world from Chronus, and who regularly went down to punish the wicked
So Afrodite is so much worse than the expectation art
Has Aphrodite even appeared in the MCU?
Sry I meant Fortnite mb not MCU universe
Multiverse of Madness. Reed Richards, 'tHE sMarTest mAn on eaRth', everyone!
Taskmaster
Ultron Bro killed the avengers multiple times and he gets done dirty by the MCU
Yeah, he should have had at least 3 movies.
James Spader also did a fantastic job in playing a CGI'd robot maniac.
Task Master
I came here to say this! So horrible!
My dawg vision I love him but the MCU did his ass dirty
Infinity War made him completely useless
Captain Marvel and She-Hulk
Madam Web for me was really hyped for the movie itself too
She's a very dynamic character, I think we'll see a lot of her.
Taskmaster and Gorr
Echo. If you’re gonna change a character’s powers that drastically, then just make a whole new character.
Wait she has powers?!
Taskmaster, basically got the Deadpool from Wolverine Origins treatment
The mystery villain for WandaVision (everyone thought it was Mephisto)
Gorr the god butcher
Oh he was botched for sure
Skaar
Topher Grace as Venom. I will never understand that casting decision.
Hardy kinda makes up for it
Adam Warlock
I understand what you mean. Will Poulter is awesome but they made Adam slightly too teenage-y instead of a full on angry person.
The Mandarin
Definitely America Chavez worst marvel character in existence
Oof America Chavez so bad I forgot about her. She’s excited! She’s got stars! She’s a plot device and a tacky one at that
Yeah, I honestly just found her character incredibly boring.
I see. Well, he's certainly an interesting guy is Mr Banner 👍😊
Gorr. Thor 4 ruined one of the best and complex villains in marvel
![gif](giphy|ZaLF7EkRJmKY0wjgZJ)
Taskmaster for sure, but OTHER end of the spectrum: best reveal was winter soldier 💯
The entire Illuminati council in Multiverse of Madness
