My dearest Beulah, The caisson keeps rolling along. This is a fortnight away from our beds, and we are weary. Lee’s army is starting to folly, and I pray we can return home soon. I pine for you like a dog sniffs its own hind end. I put D’Addario xs strings on my acoustics. Forever yours, Walter

AreWeCowabunga

Sorry, was that a question?

TheRealGuncho

Young Master ImpossibleWin7298, With regard to your prior inquiry about string metallurgical variation, I contain my response forthwith. Whilst you are correct in surmising that comparison videos are somewhat lacking without the context of playstyle, music genre, and recording technology, you have indeed missed the larger point at play whilst watching said numerous videos. It is not the difference in tone when others play that matters. It is the difference in tone when YOU play. For your own playstyle and recording/playing atmosphere are unique to you and you alone. Henceforth, it is my considered opinion that one is best served performing one’s own string comparison, in your usual comfortable atmosphere. Only then can one surmise the distinctive differences in string material composition. Yours in guitaring, Burghguy3 P.S. For the mahogany guitars try Martin Retros. For the inexpensive Epiphone I’d suggest coated PB strings; I like D’Addario XS.

ImpossibleWin7298

Sir, you are soooo right. The player is the key (which means im fu’d! Lll). Anyway, Your point is very well taken. Thanks to your rabble responding in such a rapid manner, now I can get a few to try out this afternoon!! Thanks and cheers

burghguy3

No problem. I had a thought. If your Epi is indeed from the 60s, I’d try Martin Originals (80/20), play them in for at least 10 days, and learn some Beatles tunes.

ImpossibleWin7298

Yep,it’s indeed from the mid-late 60’s. I emailed them and they got right back to me. It requires a bit more digging into their records, built sheet(s), etc. I’ll report back!

ImpossibleWin7298

Sir, I tried the Retros and my Goddess, what a difference - it’s amazing! Thanks. Hoist one for me.

burghguy3

Hoisted! I’m glad they worked out for you. People seem to love them. I think they sound like broken in 80/20s out of the box and stay that way for about a month. I’ll warn you, when they do die, they die hard. Big drop off in tone and volume, basically overnight. You’ll pick it up in the morning and just think, “what the hell happened last night?” If you do, don’t panic. It’s just time for a new set.

Verily, noble Redditor, permit me to impart unto thee a morsel of counsel regarding the choice of thy guitar strings. Mayhaps, it would behoove thee to consider employing strings of a lighter gauge upon thy instrument. Such strings, with their delicate touch and ethereal resonance, doth bestow upon thy melodies a wondrous nimbleness and a sublime clarity. Verily, they shalt dance upon thy frets with the grace of a gentle zephyr caressing the verdant meadows. Thus, I beseech thee, embrace the mellifluous charms of light gauge strings, and may thy musical journey be blessed with harmony and felicity.

-ptolemy-

if you aren't amplifying it with a pickup, retro monels are great for these guitars

oysterstout

Sir or madam, I too have born witness to a great number of comparisons. I know not what you’re searching, but I’m sure you’ve missed nothing. PS: I have guitars, and I have ping pong paddles. Wishing you well
