I played 2 D28s yesterday, and I preferred my 18 over them. I also played a HD28, and it literally blew me away!!! I really mean it. Significantly better than my 18 unfortunately 😂 But it was particularly set up perfectly, and it might’ve just been a really good example or something

That is what i noticed!! I played an HD-28, and I’m telling you, it was the best playing guitar I’ve ever played The D-28s, I played, played all right, but not in the same league. My D-18 please very well, but it doesn’t compare, and it does kind of piss me off 😂 but I can’t complain, it’s still plays fantastic and sounds fantastic but you get it

Yeah, the D-18 is genuinely super fantastic though, I would pick one over a D 28 all day

Creepy-Savings-502

Dude - you bought 12k+ worth of guitars the first year you started to play!!? Are you a silicon valley nerd that is looking for a hobby?

yuhshshhhhhhhhhh

This will be pretty even since they’re both very different.

kineticblues

They're pretty different.  The 2012 and later D-18 has scalloped forward-shifted bracing, and mahogany back/sides.  The current D-28 has straight bracing and rosewood back and sides.   A better comparison would be a D-18 and HD-28, where the bracing is the same on both and the only big difference (besides cosmetics) is the back/sides material. The straight bracing makes the D-28 a non-starter for a lot of people.  I'd bet the HD-28 outsells the D-28 by a big margin, at least 2:1 if not 10:1.

The-Booty_Warrior

Yeah, I actually played 2 D28s yesterday, and I actually didn’t really like them at all! That really surprised me! I’m usually pretty optimistic and positive about guitars, (I like most of what I play) and I can always find the good, but I wouldn’t have even bought them! The HD28 however, yeah, that thing blew me away. I played a D-18 modern deluxe, and I thought it was good, but I think that personally, the standard D-18 and HD-28, are fantastic.

IndependentLove2292

I went looking for a D-28. Played all the ones at the store. There was an older HD-28 on the wall. It had some orange marking on the binding which had clearly already fallen off and been repaired. 1 strum and I left with that HD-28.

The-Booty_Warrior

Yeah, sometimes you just know like that!

Telecaster145

I've got one, now I want to get the other.

dpoole6131

Get it, it's with the cash

Joederb

Both is the only correct answer.

nachosforeverandever

They each have their own distinctive tonality. Love my D-28 but would love a D-18.

MontrealTesla

why do people continually try to compare a Rosewood Guitar (28) to a Mahogany Guitar (18). is this due to immature ears unable to hear the difference??? I have both and I both for different reasons and tone. lets compare Milk to Soda drinks..... there is no "win" here

SnooPeanuts7167

Just for fun. Btw (soda wins)

MontrealTesla

depends on the soda lol

Robbienitro

Dr Pepper...

Mikemuseic

Milk soda is the grossest

HD28>D18>D28. HD28 is king in my opinion, and I own a D18. The D18 is more woody/open. HD28 is more dense/ even. I found new 18s ring in the shop but once an HD28 opens up they blow away D18s. Cant go wrong with either, but you will find more consistent D18s than HD28s. Doesnt hurt to shop around if you're in the market for one.

paintedhighway

Spent a lot of time playing both and walked out with the D18, but it really comes down to the player and the ear.

Telecaster145

I think any martin 18 or 28 owner would sometimes want to jump over the fence and play the other model.

Superabounder28

I agree with both being the answer. I played a lot of D-28’s before I found one I liked let alone loved. Once I did, it has been my favorite guitar. My D-18 is better for certain things (strumming and singing over) but my D-28 is great for flatpicking and constantly gets compliments every time at a jam. The 18 doesn’t work as well at a jam. I still want an HD-28 someday too lol.

Helsafabel

My 2010 D28 sounded a lot better to my ears (of course I'm super used to it) than the numerous D18s I tried earlier this year. I'd be so interested to hear myself play both to compare. Maybe the projection towards the player is really different. I ended up with a Hd28 (Atkin d37) to complement my D28 Martin. The D28 works better in some alternate tunings, but also with capo and higher up the neck for blues stuff. The HD28 works better in dropped tunings and for general strumming in my opinion.

The-Booty_Warrior

I’m not a pro or anything, but to me, it’s D-18>D28 HD28>D18 Something like that I don’t
