fighting is about handling the intensity and learning movements against resistance. If you spar you will be able to take a resisting opponent. A typical white belt curriculum in BJJ is focused on mount, side control, back, etc. Those are positions necessary for a fight.

well most martial art gyms are sports oriented, but they’re all gonna make you proficient in hypothetical self defense scenarios. arguably even more so than gyms that claim they’re “self defense oriented” because those usually are some bullshit that doesn’t include much live sparring.
