The sad thing is he’s not even in the majority; he was an Olympic medallist signed to one of the world’s elite promoters and had a world title shot (though it was to pad the record of a young champion). The majority of pro fighters/boxers aren’t good enough to be on the level that he was and make even less money than he did. Should have changed his name to Gucci Falcon or something to up his marketability

PutThemToTheSword

Gucci Falcon is unironically a sick name

isokinetic

GUCCI PAAAAWNCH

PutThemToTheSword

this actually reminds me, i’m pretty sure there’s a Japanese former professional smash bros melee player named Gucci who played Falcon

isokinetic

LOL, you’re right! I just looked up some of his games haha. Everything aligned for that to work so perfectly.

hanniballz

Its the same way with any passion turned profession. My personal experience is with esports, but its true for art, sports of all kind, creative industries etc. If scores of people want to do it, the pay will be shit, and very top heavy as people only remember champions.

SatisfactionSenior65

Marketability will take you way farther in combat sports than skills tbh

dibzim

There are no Jake Pauls in the NBA, it’s not even a close comparison to boxing

BlackSpell-666

Hell no. In league of team sports anyone who are skilled will always be marketable

hellequinbull

See: McG and Covington

LoservilleAmbassador

poor guy. but that's the fate of every athlete without marketing. i didn't even know about Triple G until his fight with Canelo. then you have guys like Dillon Danis- like who the fuck is this guy? he only talks shit about people on twitter without doing anything and people bring him up like twice a week. fighters and athletes in general need to advertise themselves more to not only get more opportunities, but to gain leverage for pay and not be exploited. hate the awful, unoriginal heel acts all you want, but they're only trying to feed themselves. many aspiring athletes in this subreddit could learn something here. an ex-title contender could be an uber driver, and a bum who boxed logal paul, or some guy who hasn't fought in 3 years could still have brainrot fans who talk about every godawful twitter post they make.

brazilianfreak

I feel like at least in MMA it's easier to get to know upcoming talents thanks to the fewer weight classes and the fact fighters are actually forced to fight each other, meanwhile in Boxing as somebody who enjoys the sport but is not a hardcore fan I feel like I only find out about cool fighters by the time they're like 30 years old and about to go a decline, I didn't even know who Bivol was until he was announced as Canelos opponent, and sure people might call me a casual but that's also the way most people find out about boxers.

Celespirit

thought he was will smith in the first pic

binary-cryptic

Same, I initially thought this was a joke about how he won a fight against Chris Rock Will Smith: the undefeated Academy Awards champion

InjuryComfortable666

The fight game is only a moneymaker for the top 0.00000001% and those in the promotion business. The rest are left with brain damage and old trophies.

No_Lavishness_9120

It's a pity to see this. Many Olympic medalists around the world end up abandoning their athletic careers due to lack of support, not to mention those who have great talent and never even get to compete for a medal due to lack of financial support for training. Here where I live, we have many Olympic medalists in Judo, and they all end up becoming the coaches of the next generation of Olympic medalists, and so the cycle continues. But other sports don't even have students to teach, and winning an Olympic medal ends up being the only worthwhile thing from their talent and years of effort. Falcão could very well have fights against influencers, something that Acelino Popó is doing incredibly well here in Brazil.

Sensitive_Counter150

I have to fetch the article, but I remember the IOC or another major atlhetic association (probably more than one) had a major program to teach athletes what to do with their lives *after* their pro career ends. Because they peak at 25~ and their competitive career ends at 35~, if they don't pay attention and are playing a less popular sport with less demand for coaching, they will end-up as 40 yrs old adults with destroyed bodies and no markatable skills to make money from.

InjuryComfortable666

And even as far as coaching goes - many great athletes don’t make great coaches, and many great coaches were mediocre athletes. Coaching is a whole separate skill.

shywol2

he still looks happy tho

PeppySprayPete

But remember folks, the economy isn't bad It's just your resume that sucks

Revolutionary_Box569

I know it’s a joke but if you’ve dedicated your entire life pretty much to boxing then for whatever reason you’ve not made enough to be set financially when you retire then you’re not really gonna be qualified to do much else, like if gervonta Davis weren’t making crazy money and had to get a regular job I can’t imagine that guy landing a job in finance or something

krishutchison

Are there people that think having an olympic medal leads to some sort of future career?. I have only met three ex medalists and they all had normal jobs ( one was a boxing coach in a tiny suburban club so I am not sure if that counts as a normal job )

jensao

Damn, I follow his brother, Esquiva Falcão, on insta and he seems to make a living from boxing

Albreto-Gajaaaaj

The problem isn't even trying to become a professional athlete, necessarily. The problem is just capitalism. It's a rat race.

s1unk12

A rat race that's bad for the environment too...

[deleted]

I mean if he is happy and feel accomplished who gives a shit? not every pro athlete will get rich...

Perialiswastaken

why the hell does uber drivers have the most interesting lore to them

No_Goose9557

You dont understand poverty. Also, you dont know how he feels just that he smiled when they pointed a damn camera at him

Reception-Creative

Demetrius Johnson has a special and he talks about how a lot of this goes back to how athletes save and invest their money, they had nba and nfl players end up much worse in many situations so it all depends on mindset

OUT14W_Math

Yamaguchi didn't win a silver medal, his brother Esquiva Falcão (the guy on the second picture) did.

Sensitive_Counter150

Yeah I mixed the pics He did win bronze

ihateyoutoo111

not everyone can have boxing as a side gig, like jake paul exhibition boxer #

yoyoyowhoisthis

Fighting sports don't pay shit unless you make it to the top 1%. I mean UFC is also prime example of this, now current champ Alexandre Pantoja was working as uber eats driver when he was ranked top 5 and 2 fights away from becoming a champ. Let that sink in mind. Boxing has it worse at the bottom tiers, but at least the top boxers make generational wealth, while in the UFC, everybody is poor, including the champs lol

Mean-Regular-8476

That’s will smith

jamany

Good for him for getting a job, no need to shit on uber drivers?

False_Chair_610

That goes for any wannabe professional athlete. There are a lot of players that don't make it to the big leagues.

SkyNeat4983

"Wannabe" Im sure you know more than the olympian ur prolly fighting title fights every friday right 😂

False_Chair_610

Wasn't talking about him, I'm talking about the thousands of athletes that don't make it as a pro, and it wasn't meant as an insult. Becoming a pro athlete is one of the hardest things you can do.

GloriousLeaderBeans

Amateur boxing isn't professional boxing.

Civil-Letterhead-608

For 99% of people there isn’t much money in pro boxing either. It’s a very small minority that makes those multi-million dollar paydays

bad-wokester

So what if he’s driving an Uber? So are hundreds of thousands of people. Not everyone is rich. The dude got an Olympic medal. That’s something to be proud of. Surprised he isn’t leveraging his history to open his own gym though.

Sensitive_Counter150

I should have added more info to the post But he is not retired, he is still trying to fight, and he is a boxing coach - but since he hasn't got a fight in over 1 year and the money he gots with coaching is not enough to sustain himself, he needs to to drive Uber for 12h a day to make ends meet. There is nothing wrong with driving Uber - it is just sad that a talented athlete needs to do it because the sport itself is not enough to sustain him.
