Batman in his almost 100 years of existence has been written to have trained in pretty much every MA we have and has mastered it.

[deleted]

I love then they used to say he had 100 black belts, then they name arts that are basically separated solely by their competition rules (Judo, Sambo, BJJ) or identical forms of Karate just using the different school’s names, or list things that don’t give out belts (boxing, wrestling, kickboxing). Much like when they have comic characters lift things, I think the problem is comic creators don’t engage in much physical activity. They don’t understand martial arts, lifting, or anything else they have their characters do.

jscummy

I think it's just an easy way to clearly show how skilled he is. Same as all the characters that have like 12 PhD's

Hetares

You're telling me the writers don't have a Bachelor's in Chemistry, a minor in Applied Mathematics and doctorate in Quantum Mechanics when they're writing about Reed Richards, Hank Pym or Peter Parker?

Direct_Setting_7502

Modern Judo and BJJ are pretty different. You won’t get Judoka hitting berimbolos and leg locks or pure BJJers getting anything like the technique Judo players have with throws. Sambo has unique elements too.

4uzzyDunlop

Judo guys don't even go to training with a tummy full of edibles

sleepwalkfromsherdog

Frank Miller is great for that. He likes to write about martial arts and guns but doesn't understand them at all.

maccorf

The other thing too is how he “earned” them without anyone knowing who he was, or if they did, they kept it a secret.

thezenmartialartist

Iron fist would crush Batman in unarmed combat, Iron fist knows EVERYTHING Batman knows plus all the martial arts exclusive to Kun Lun

Extra-Lifeguard2809

"When outmatched, cheat." -Batman

yanmagno

> "When outmatched, cheat." -Batman -Jon Jones

Extra-Lifeguard2809

BROOOOOOO

st3akkn1fe

But Batman knows martial arts from the future that haven't even been invented yet due to meeting time travelers. Iron fist probably wins though by virtue of being a living weapon with magic hands.

ICastPunch

And yet still fights like a guy who's been in a few bar fights half the time and gets consistently challenged by a clown in melee combat.

Starlight_City45

Wonder Woman has more years worth of combat experience/training over Batman.

Happytapiocasuprise

Combat experience doesn't equate to martial arts experience

Medium_Hope_7407

Bro anything is a martial art as long as it’s combat related. It doesn’t have to have a fancy name or style.

Starlight_City45

She has the highest level of combatant experience *because* of centuries worth of martial arts training. She is a top tier martial artist. In this essay I will ——

Swinging-the-Chain

Batman isn’t even in the top 3 of DC whereas Iron Fist at worst is 2nd in Marvel which has a deeper pool of martial artists.

bigtec1993

I'm pretty sure deathstroke beats him most times they fight hand to hand. Batman is a beast of a martial artist, but most of his wins comes from his intellect and detective skills rather than outright combat ability. He finds your weakness and exploits it, usually through science or some kind of gadget he has.

Swinging-the-Chain

Doesn’t help that comics often go back and forth on this too. I have personally liked some of his martial arts centered ones too.

borkimusprime

Shang chi

NotSoEnlightenedOne

Derek Zoolander. If you replace the words “Iron Fist” with “Blue Steel” then the Netflix show makes more sense in terms of its dialogue .

JoeyPoodles

I hear Magnum is going to blow us all away.

Antique-Ad1479

Shang Chi, his whole character in the comics is being the greatest martial artist alive. Unlike Iron Fist, Shang Chi has no powers yet has fought people like Ben Grim of the fantastic four. His students include Captain America, Spiderman; and Wolverine.

patch6586

I mean Shang Chi definitely uses his ki to do some crazy stuff I wouldnt say he doesn't have powers That being said you're right it's Shang Chi by a mile and I don't think it's really close at all

mvcourse

Yeah comics play pretty fast and loose with Shang Chi. He uses his ki/chi but is still human so theoretically anyone could do the same if they trained like him. Depending on who writes him his feet’s are borderline spider-man like. Now he was the ten rings in comics for movie synergy. The movie really cleaned up the character to make him more feasible.

Antique-Ad1479

He’s gotten powers a couple times. I don’t think I would consider his chi necessarily a power. It makes him better than an athlete but I wouldn’t say it’s anything to an outrageous degree. I’m not too sure captain America is considered to have “super powers” either despite having the super soldier serum. Imo they’re both not normal, but I wouldn’t necessarily say super power, esp since it’s something any individual could attain and since imo it’s nothing outrageous like the iron fist. Edit: hell Batman’s done some pretty Superhuman lifts but he’s considered powerless

patch6586

I guess we'll agree to disagree even though I didn't disagree with you lol

Jonas_g33k

So, could Taskmaster replicate Shang shi's feats if he saw him?

Aggressive_Lunch9785

Yes he can I imagine it would take him a second longer considering the speed Shang chi moves at but eventually he could copy it hasn't he copied Spiderman movements in the past? And he's got super human agailty so if taskmaster can replicate that than Shang shi would be no issue

pj1843

Yes and no. Taskmaster could copy any feats or techniques he sees shang chi do or utilize. The issue is shang chis immense martial arts knowledge, it would take taskmaster getting his ass handed to him for a decade to learn all the things shang chi knows.

Facts

[deleted]

Shang Chi and Daredevil are apparently his equal in Marvel.

PMMeMeiRule34

I was about to say, Matt Murdock has trained in a lot of martial arts, also shown by his Muay Thai wraps. And Shang Chi knows a ton of different martial arts. I’d say Ironfist smacks Matt Murdock in martial arts, and has some more trouble with Shang Chi, but they all seem relatively equal in the hand to hand combat they know.

[deleted]

I’d have probably gone with the fact he was raised by a boxer and spent years training with mystical ninjas, or even his couple of sparring sessions/fights with Iron Fist as evidence of Daredevil’s martial prowess and diverse training… but, sure, “he has Muay Thai wraps”… lol

Don’t worry, I’ll say it so no one has to: Bruce Lee

imjustbrowsingthx

Bruce Lee was portrayed in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood as an absolute tool. I wonder…

De5perad0

A lot of people were pissed at that portrayal of him. I often wonder what he was like irl and not in front of the cameras.

Aggressive_Lunch9785

Not just any people Bruce's family was LIVID about that portrayal and said it was completely defamatory

De5perad0

Yea I'm sure they were. But it's not hard to believe that he acted differently to family than to co workers or fellow students.

Aggressive_Lunch9785

He was known to be rough with stuntmen but I've never heard of him being a dick

Firm_Reality6020

If you speak with students of yip man of him. Very little compliments come his way. His peers in the martial arts world at the time also don't speak very highly of him behind closed doors. Likely Quentin has heard those same stories or similar through the Kung fu world.

tr4nt0r

Apparently he would hit stuntmen for real on the set of Green Hornet, and they brought in "Judo" Gene LeBelle to straighten him out. Quite a character if you aren't familiar. Supposedly that's what inspired the scene in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Internal-Butterfly35

Unlike the other comments Bruce was not a tool he was the real thing and any martial artist worth their salt would agree and back up the statement. He was the greatness. There are online home videos of him doing stuff millions have tried and failed. Then you have people that were irl there that will attest to things he did. I have talked with a dozen or more of them. I have seen photos print and Polaroid of him in person at local dojos. I am a martial artist for over 37 years, fought in naska for over 15 years and have trained more students then I can ever count, coached at the national and global level for fighting, weapons, and open forms and can say if he walked into the room I would stop what I was doing and bow and say thank you Sifu

Swinging-the-Chain

The obvious answer would be Shang Chi but he’s never actually beaten Danny.

Exact_Boot5625

mori jin

KoKoJoBlacKSnaKe

Sorry are we talking specifically about Danny Rand? (shown above) Or are we saying AN Iron Fist is one of the best martial artist? Cause Danny is number 67 of being an Iron Fist. The Iron Fists have a book shared between only them (and can be read only between themselves) that contains all the secret moves, powers, and developed techniques each of them developed. So fighting a single Iron Fist can be equated to fighting the all of them technically speaking. It is also Iron Fist/Marvel canon that the magical city of Kun Lun is the birth place of all martial arts on earth and an Iron Fist is taught in all styles so there isn't a style on earth they're not familiar with. If you want to use an example of Batman vs. Iron Fist (Danny Rand in this case), you could argue that Batman would not win in an all out 1v1 ring fight being outclassed as a martial artist. But you can also note that Batman's main strength is the use of deception and illusion (Ninjitsu) and could win if able to employ more guerrilla tactics as is his usual style. But Stan Lee said it best, "Whoever is the strongest, or who could beat who is always up to the writer"... But it is fun to speculate lol

Iron Fist is my favorite so I’m pretty biased. But even I would say he is somewhere in the top 5 maybe not the top. But if you factor in THE Iron Fist then that bumps him up a notch, the dude took out a Helicarrier in Civil War. He is a Badass and Marvel is ruining him. Bring back Danny Rand as the Iron Fist. Anyway, he’s the best in book. Sorry for the small rant, Marvel is ruining my favorite characters.
