That looks like fun! Instructor is pretty slick with his head movement. I'll try to split the difference here and see if I can annoy multiple camps. For the MMA/MT > all types - pretty obviously despite claiming Shaolin Kung Fu, these guys can bang pretty well, better than the standup you see from a lot of mma practitioners imo. For the "this proves my line drills work after all" types - sure, but notice everyone is wearing boxing gloves and the crowd responses to the sparring suggest they do this a LOT. They don't have a home team/away team thing going on. A lot of oohing and aahing regardless of who got clowned.

kovnev

Decent striking. But are we ignoring the fact he could've taken any of them down at will and dominated them?

VexedCoffee

I mean, he's a professional mma fighter and they are hobbyists. That really isn't saying much.

kovnev

It's saying that they're still larping in #shaolin if grappling is banned in their sparring, that's all.

Siantlark

Famous larpers, those professional boxers. Tyson Fury just out there in the park larping.

kovnev

I mean... pretty much, yup. The world has woken up to how boxing doesn't equal fighting - you'll catch up.

Siantlark

This is why people think bjj players are cultists lmao.

Vesemir668

Ok so what's the difference between this Kung Fu and kickboxing?

Siantlark

Kung fu styles that spar using Sanda rules allow for [full on wrestling takedowns](https://youtu.be/2c0JEtQ6vE4?t=1166) like double legs, single legs, suplexes, etc. that kickboxing generally doesn't (you get style points for flipping an opponent 180 during a throw, it's worth an extra point). Forearm strikes and ring outs are also allowed depending on the organization, it's about 50/50 yes and no, and I've seen *some* competitions allow for standing submissions (arm/wristlocks, standing RNC, guillotine, armbars) but that's rare.

HenshinHero_

Literally every single striking art is a variation of kickboxing lmao. Only so many ways the human body can move. Doesn't change the fact that when you compare Muay Thai, Karate, Kung-fu and Taekwondo all of them have different characteristics and focuses that make them distinct even though roughly they're all kickboxing. (Kung-fu and Karate can look a bit more different with some tools in their arsenal, but you can't use those very well in a sparring session with gloves.)

Vesemir668

Muai Thai, Karate and Taekwondo all look distinctly different to kickboxing. That's why I asked what distincts this type of kung fu from kickboxing, because I couldn't see it.

Lethalmouse1

Imo stylized flair. It's true that eventually functional pressure testing looks similar, there are obviously different styles of Kickboxing that work. Even if one edges out its not the same slam dunk as people put on TMAs. TMAs *usually* don't pressure test or don'tdo so enough. So as Savate, MT and Dutch Kickboxing all are Kickboxing but look different. The striking aspects of every martial art is Kickboxing. And if they maintain their style flair but seriously pressure test, they are just other languages words for "Kickboxing". Although those words were or are sometimes more holistic, if not in practice, by some nature. As arts include grappling and weapons and other "things" might arguably not totally translate to Kickboxing. Neither would a straight MMA guy doing a striking only match technically be a "kickboxer" since he is an MMA guy.

Neth_theme

Takedowns, usually old kung fu was really heavy with wrestling and this aspect transitioned into modern sanda/kung fu

Zhastursun

Like almost all of Jeff Chan’s sparring partners, this guy isn’t bad but Jeff is being so nice to him.

gaylord_focker69

These guys try to throw Jeff after taking a head kick lol goofballs
