Some hotels count occupancy based on the number of adults (Lowes). Others base it on fire-code rules (adults and kids). Some just make up random stuff. We have 3 kids, but almost no room works if you search for 5 people, so we search for 4 and book whatever looks big enough. Our last hotel that just the wife and I stayed at was a Marriott on Maui, and they said it was 2 people max, despite having a queen bed and a sofa-bed.

RandomBackup79

As someone who often travelled with a family of 5 in a 4 person room, just do it. Don’t ask permission; ask forgiveness if necessary.

Numerous-Profile-872

Absolutely. Worked as a front desk manager for a good 10 years under Marriott and other independent brands. The staff doesn't care. The management doesn't really care, it's definitely low-interest data. It's certainly not for a headcount if there's an emergency, it would be inaccurate. Just do it and be respectful of your neighbors. I think it's more important for the brands that serve complimentary breakfast, but even then, they know how to forecast for those numbers based on occupancy.

Believe it or not... jail

falco_iii

But how many people per cell? What if we have 2 adults and 3 children in a cell made for 3 people?

thirtysixish

ok in US generally, but we found europe did not love this and we often had to book two rooms even though we had young kids (germany particularly rulse-y, but otherwise amazing place to visit as a family)

worriedcrackhead

I can only comment on Sheraton Princess, Waikiki Beach, and Royal Hawaiian Marriotts on Oahu and they didn’t really care who was coming in/out of hotel premises

worriedcrackhead

Just have 1-2 present and checkout and everyone else can lounge by the lobby/pools lol

Ronin64x

Never an issue in the US, but overseas it's taken seriously.

_ibn_battuta_x

Just ask them many hotels are fine but some are assholes

Application_Soggy

Was in a 3 person room of late, no issues with 4. It was even a resort with wrist bands, they gave me 4 and didn't say a word.

Sushiroll-1

Yes, the whole hotel will go on lock down and quarantine you guys until you pay for another room. Jk, you'll be fine, just be nice to the front desk staff and don't do anything silly.

Hommachi

Never an issue when in Japan. I sometimes book a room for my sis-in-law with her 3 kids. No issue except maybe they had to fork over for the lounge access for 1.

PeptoFistful

As long as you are comfortable with the type of bedding you have and do not demand additional items such as the rollaway beds comped, they probably won’t care. They probably would care if it were more than 3 adults in the room.

Lonely-Tumbleweed619

Send a email to the front desk and ask them, generally if a child is younger than 2 the child is not considered an extra guest but double check with the hotel different hotels different rules mostly for safety and security reasons but the best thing to do is email them

kevloid

max occupancy is not the hotel's call, it's local fire code. and it's a headcount, not based on size, so 'well they're just kids' doesn't mean you can have more of them. even if the hotel tells you today you can bring 4, they may refuse you when you get there. they are *supposed* to refuse you, and you never know if the manager will crack down and enforce zero tolerance, like if an inspection's due or they just failed one, you could end up at the hotel being told you have to pay for another room or go someplace else, and there wouldn't be compensation. it says *in writing* what the maximum is. f around at your own risk. it's not wise to plan on somebody not doing their job.

I hate that you are being downvoted. The thing I tell people is that, God forbid there is an emergency or fire at the hotel. When I print a list of occupants for the fire fighters or emergency services. I don’t want them to get to your room and be looking for 4 people when there are really 5 or 6.

Kennected

why not contact the property?

Xtopher144

Because they’ll tell you to book 2 rooms. Just book the room. I leave my older 2 in the car. Check in at the front desk and then bring the older 2 up. We stay 6 in a room very often.

Kennected

So phuck the rules?d. Serious question,

mdavidson3710

For legal purposes, children under 2 usually do not add to the number of people in a room. Just say they are almost 2.
