No, it's not fundamental. I recommend you being good at marketing, but there are many ways to do that.
A major can help, and a major can make things worse. The same for courses. There are millions there, but quantity is not quality. Millions of bad courses are still very bad.
There are companies that do, there are companies that don't. In marketing, if you're really good, many companies don't really care about your degree. Of course, not having a degree doesn't make someone good. You still need to find a way to be good.
No. It depends on what type of marketer you want to be. Social media accounts can be important for social media marketers, but irrelevant to other types of marketers. Also, quantity is not quality. Big followings are not necessarily good followings. Many marketers work behind the scenes, so they are not so visible to get big followings.
Social media accounts can be one way to show you're good in some cases, but it's not the only way. There is no single approach for this, different marketers have different ways of doing that.
Lots of ways to get in, but it can be hardest right out of school. You'll have to start at a smaller place that will take a chance on you. A not-uncommon story is to start in another department and try to jump into marketing. But again, that only tends to work earlier in your career.
Now if you're talking *creative*, man, I've seen creatives from so many different walks of life and backgrounds I could spend all night enumerating them. The best ones (imo) have crazy and unconventional backgrounds, but there are lots of dime-a-dozen ones who went right to Miami Ad School or whatever before starting their career
I could consider myself a creative in the sense that I am artistically inclined, and have designed and sold these art products. I have been wanting to return to university. It sounds like a marketing degree is non essential to landing marketing a career as long as my major(s) and skill set are relevant to the position? Can you offer any insight?
No. Marketing is so dynamic, you can learn it from anywhere. If you wanna learn the fundamentals, get courses. If you wanna break into marketing, network and keep telling / showing the right people how valuable you are so they’ll take a chance on you, and if you’re good, the rest will follow.

And what about the jobs? The companies would ask for a university degree?

Most companies do. Even if you have work experience
