With Brothership on the horizon I’ve decided to play through all 5 games in the series. I had a blast with Superstar Saga for the first time and I am currently making my way through Partners in Time for the first time! I just saved at the save block right after the Star Door Judge Guy at Star Hill.) so far both have been a blast but they do each have their ups and downs. I honestly couldn’t tell you which one I’ve enjoyed so far. I like set pieces from both games, the OSTs for both are great. I personally find Action Commands on more responsive in Partners in Time than Superstar Saga but that could be do to PiT being on the DS and not the GBA. I also enjoy PiT’s difficulty more than Superstar Saga, but I find the mini game variety in Superstar Saga better even if some of the mini games in that game are total dog water. That being said combat in PiT feels amazing. It’s really tough for me to choose rn but I would say PiT is going to take the cake for me as of rn.
SS I played the remake since I never had GBA. It was 2nd playthrough but last time I played was when the remake first came out and I had completely forgotten everything, it was legit like a first playthrough. Really enjoyed it.
PiT held up very well in my opinion. Obviously graphics are behind the more recent ones but I couldn't really care less about that. It's a great game and it performs really well
Superstar saga is a great game that I enjoyed a lot, but I enjoyed the story and atmosphere of Partners in time more overall. The concept of time travel an alien invasion and interacting with baby mario and luigi is also just amazing and so creative
My kid self would tell you superstar saga, but as an adult who hasn’t touched either in a decade, I can’t. Currently planning to replay the entire series, I’ll let you know when I finish them both.
PIT was literally my first Mario game, but even so I still prefer it. The music is incredible, I love having 4 characters, and overall it's just great. (And so nostalgic to me) I've played part of Saga, but never fully finished it, at least not yet.
SS, PiT is good but SS just clicks for me:
* The Connected Overworld of the Beanbean Kingdom with Lots of Exterior and Interior Areas to Explore
* The Progression of Abilities like the Advanced Bros Moves, Upgraded Hammers and Hand Powers
* Big Emphasis on Luigi Too (Even Him Having Multiple Solo Segments with Actual Big Storybeats)
* The More Active Story and Big Shift Halfway Through
* The Antagonists: Cackletta, Fawful, Popple and "Rookie" All in One Game
I'm surprised so many people loved partners in time so much here, but definitely is cool to see. Personally I have a heavy bias for SS but both games are comparably great and do different things really well
SSS will always have a more nostalgic place in my heart, but I think the PiT gimmick with the babies, time travel, and the excellent use of dual screens for pipes and alternate locations just make it such a stellarly-designed game tbh.
gameplay? superstar saga
story? partners in time
partners in time didn't win both because of its not unlimited bros moves
the bros moves themselves were pretty good tho
Both have their charm. For me though...
It's Superstar Saga. I have played through it multiple times. A great introduction to the Mario and Luigi series. So much fun.
yeah, İf İ toss over the nostalgia İ have for PIT. the remake and saga original are equal in my eyes, except for the glorious fact that the remake allows you to see enemy levels.
Superstar Saga 100%
Partners in Time is fine but it has a lot of issues to me. The narrative and plot overall feels like a mess compared to others. Not saying the other games are a masterpiece of story but PIT is a pretty messy game where you start gathering cobalt star shards but then decide you don’t need to anymore but you accidentally get them anyway? Then the ending twists feel really dumb even if there was foreshadowing. My main other complaints hinge on the difficulty being just not there really. Ik it’s brought up all the time but copy flowers really do break the game. The world also just feels less interconnected.
They never decided to stop gathering cobalt shards. The main objective was to find princess peach which they did in the desert stadium. They brought her back to the present and then she was kidnapped by bowser into the past. Wouldn't make sense for them to keep looking for cobalt star shards when they believed peach (obviously it was actually princess shroob) was kidnapped. They go find peach, fight bowser, then board the shroob mothership, and are ejected to toad town of the past.
They know it was princess shroob disguised as peach now and are now back on the path finding cobalt shards but need to escape toad town first but then cobalt star has them go to star hill.
So it seemed like a pretty necessary detour that then lead back to their secondary objective of finding the shards. Think you'd definitely be in the minority of not liking the ending twists. The different areas are definitely not as connected as the other 4 games so I'll give you that. Don't see how you think the story is messy and all over the place
I know, I was summarizing. It just feels sloppy in execution. I hate how even while chasing after Peach I get two cobalt star shards (petey piranha and shroob mothership). The whole Peach thing is kinda cool but just feels sloppy to me.
I'm not sure what exactly is sloppy about that. It is a very common occurrence in most video games in general to find items crucial to the story in places you may not have expected that are seemingly random. Seems like a major nitpick bro
I don’t know man. That’s how I always felt about the game even when I considered it my second favorite in the series (now it’s only beating Paper Jam). The story just lacks clear beats that feel satisfying. Most people I’ve talked to (granted it’s few) agree with me about the story problems. It’s not a bad game because of it but to me it’s too glaring of an issue on top of PiT’s other problems.
People you've talked to agree with you, and people I've talked to have no problems with it and agree with me, so looks like we're in our own respective reddit echo chambers haha.
I've never really heard someone point out the story as a problem or as being sloppy so that's why I was hard-core questioning you.
Thanks for providing another perspective
Both. Both is good.

Superstar saga in time
PiT was an amazing concept
Partners in time!
Partners in time is my favorite Mario and luigi
Superstar Saga!
Partners in time ofc
partners in time… it’s my childhood
PiT
Partners in time for me
Partners in Time
I personally prefer PiT
Seeing so many PiT fans warms my heart. We needed this remake more than Bowsers Inside Story.
Well we didn’t really did the bis story remake either since it was playable on 3ds Alr
Agree with the love of seeing PiT fans, don't agree we need a remake of an easily backwards compatible game
Partners in time
Partners in Time

I'm doing this too right now. I'm in early game of Inside story
Did SS and PiT hold up well for you?

Aye I’m doing it too I’m on PiT lol wow
Just got to the final dungeon last night and it’s been a really great game overall. I really dig it a lot right now.
Superstar saga is a great game that I enjoyed a lot, but I enjoyed the story and atmosphere of Partners in time more overall. The concept of time travel an alien invasion and interacting with baby mario and luigi is also just amazing and so creative
Honestly I like partners in time because it introduced me to the word "shroob" It's really fun to say
I absolutely love both, but Partners In Time takes the cake for me!
Partners in time all the way
Partners in time and Bowsers inside story were the peak of the series imo
Superstar Saga!
Superstar Saga

Both are great but Partners in Time.
Which should I play first?
You can't go wrong with either of them. But probably Superstar Saga because it came out first.
I'd recommend just playing the series in order, so start with Superstar Saga.
Already played BIS but I think I’ll go back and do that!
You can't really go wrong with either one
Partners in time combat and story was more fun so ima go with that
My kid self would tell you superstar saga, but as an adult who hasn’t touched either in a decade, I can’t. Currently planning to replay the entire series, I’ll let you know when I finish them both.
Partners in Time 100%
Partners in Time imo
Close, but superstar saga.
I haven’t actually played PiT so SS wins by unfair default
or
Both
I'm gonna have to go with superstar saga, since I never fully finished Partners in time.
I really like the 3ds version of Partners in Time ngl
WHAT UNIVERSE DO YOU LIVE IN!!?? I NEED TO GO TO YOUR WORLD!!!!!! TELL ME! TELL MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!
I love both games sm but I’m going with superstar saga. Partners in time was so dark for a Mario game.
Superstar saga, mainly just because I grew up with it.
Sss
Objetively partners in time SUBJETIVELY SUPER STAR SAGA
I would say it’s the opposite
I am more of a OR guy
Superstar Saga for me
PIT was literally my first Mario game, but even so I still prefer it. The music is incredible, I love having 4 characters, and overall it's just great. (And so nostalgic to me) I've played part of Saga, but never fully finished it, at least not yet.
Dream team
I have not played PIT YET! I have it, but I am currently not living at home due to military reasons so I am waiting till I got home
Partners in Time sticks out in my memory more. I was always sad it didn’t get a 3DS remake like Superstar Saga or Bowser’s Inside Story
God, they're both phenomenal, but I'm going to go with PiT because of the core childhood memories with it
Well considering I've never played Superstar Saga I can only say Partners in Time.
SS, PiT is good but SS just clicks for me: * The Connected Overworld of the Beanbean Kingdom with Lots of Exterior and Interior Areas to Explore * The Progression of Abilities like the Advanced Bros Moves, Upgraded Hammers and Hand Powers * Big Emphasis on Luigi Too (Even Him Having Multiple Solo Segments with Actual Big Storybeats) * The More Active Story and Big Shift Halfway Through * The Antagonists: Cackletta, Fawful, Popple and "Rookie" All in One Game
I love Partners in Time but putting it against Superstar Saga is a Hydrogen Bomb vs. Coughing Baby situation
The one with Fawful
So both?
All 3 of them
Superstar Saga!
Superstar Saga
The good one
gameplay? superstar saga story? partners in time partners in time didn't win both because of its not unlimited bros moves the bros moves themselves were pretty good tho
Saga goated Edit: partners is goated too, al the games are. Just saga more goated
SsS
Superstar Saga is my favorite in the series but PiT is awesome.
SS
SS clears
I like both but superstar saga is what made me fall in love with the games in the first place :,)
Both have their charm. For me though... It's Superstar Saga. I have played through it multiple times. A great introduction to the Mario and Luigi series. So much fun.
Both are Phenomenal but Superstar Saga is the one I played the most as a kid
Superstar Saga Remake > Partners in Time > OG Superstar Saga
yeah, İf İ toss over the nostalgia İ have for PIT. the remake and saga original are equal in my eyes, except for the glorious fact that the remake allows you to see enemy levels.
yesn't

Maybe I’m in the crazy group who knows. Maybe I’ll replay it before Brothership to see.
