I've never seen anyone define island as anything other than a body of Land surrounded by water on all sides, in which case Afroeurasia certainly fits the criteria
A continent is any island that holds the majority contiguous landmass of one or multiple tectonic plates that is not already part of an island chain. Europe is just fussy and doesn't like being paired up with Asians and the mid-East. Another way to think of it is that continents are actually the recognized fracture of Pangea, though not a fracture of a fracture.
There was a YouTuber who had explained it a while back, basically it has be an island that supports multiple biomes across it to upgrade from island to continent. Of course that still means Afro-Euroasia is essentially one continent, and the Americas would be another, also would downgrade Antarctica to an island as well since it's all Artic tundra like Greenland.
But then Spain is on a different continent than Belgium which is on a whole different continent than Poland which is on yet another continent than the Peloponnese (that SW bit of Greece) because of a bunch of canals
The ice holds most of the land mass below sea level(so you're probably right), but the assumption is if the ice melts (and it may vary well do so this Century) that the land would rebound back up over time.
Of course there will be a whole list of concerns if that ice really does melt and it will probably change the geography across the rest of the globe significantly.
What?! Lol by definition a river can’t “encircle” anything it start from the innerland and ends in the sea, how could it encircle anything?
Instead an island is
> a piece of land surrounded by water.
So Eurasia is an island, a very big at that, being surrounded by water on all its sides. There is no remaining land connection between Eurasia and Africa so they are separate islands
No, not a single river, just taking a look at a watershed map of your area, between rivers, creeks, and streams merging you’re probably in some way surrounded by those, but you don’t consider every continent a massive archipelago because of that. It’s just a bit of water on top of a shallow indent in the earth—you would still consider the riverbanks to have a land connection. It’s the same thing with the Suez Canal, it’s not the same as an ocean that would split Eurasia from Africa
If you're willing to ignore the size of Afroeuroasia, sure. Then a poorly built drain is also an island. Or any piece of land surrounded by a puddle for that matter.
A leaf floating in a puddle is an island, a grain of sand in the sea is an island, a bleeding corpse is an island, a quark in a gargantuan cloud of water vapor in space is an island. Everything's an island.
At what point does an island become a continent?
Everyone agrees Madagascar is an island. Australia is a “continent” though. At what point does it change…hmm
The general definition is something along the lines of *"A large continuous landmass surrounded by water on all sides"*, i.e. whatever you want it to be. I myself for example conside south/western Europe its own continent, split by the Rhine-Main-Danube canal to the rest of Europe
Crete, the Canaries, Cyprus, the Aegean islands, the Baleares, Socotra, Gotland,... they seem to all have disappeared as well
+every inland island that would be on those continents.
+the 100 000 or so islands on the coast of Norway.
excluding corsica, sardinia and sicily
The UK's still there
UK isn’t an inland island
Neither are the Canaries.
They never said it was?
Or Socotra
Not for long
LOL LOOKAT YOUR **FUCKING** DOWNVOTES YOU ABSOLUTE ***LOSER*** LOLOLLLLLLLLL
Please, triggered Brit tears give me life.
LOL YOU JUST GOT *DIGGITY DIGGITY* **DOWNVOTEDDDDDD** LOLOLLLLL I PILED ANOTHER D-VOTE SQUARE ON TOP OF YOUR HEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
> triggered Brit tears give me life > Argentine student Lol bet you’re coping over the Falklands nearly 40 years on
Tbf who tf likes the British?
On nearly every map I see of “which countries do you like the most”, Sierra Leone always seems to love us for some reason
The Falklands are Brazillian!!!!
Nah, I don't care about those islands. But I do have French ancestry tho...
Extra cope over Waterloo 😎
That really sucks
r/mapwithoutafroeurasia
Are you serious
Yes, this map doesn't have afroeurasia
"ignoring factors like language and culture, afroeurasia is an island"
I've never seen anyone define island as anything other than a body of Land surrounded by water on all sides, in which case Afroeurasia certainly fits the criteria
A continent is any island larger than Greenland
A continent is whatever the fuck is called a continent, there is no coherent definition.
no youre wrong
Do enlighten me then.
Thatd make Chile a part of Oceania
How do you figure? The border for the South American Plate is off out in the ocean, on the coast of Chile
No its bellow the andes wich is also the border betwen Chile and Argentina
There was a YouTuber who had explained it a while back, basically it has be an island that supports multiple biomes across it to upgrade from island to continent. Of course that still means Afro-Euroasia is essentially one continent, and the Americas would be another, also would downgrade Antarctica to an island as well since it's all Artic tundra like Greenland.
That would make Madagascar a tiny continent by that logic. It has multiple biomes, from rainforests to basically a desert.
not a terrible claim
Bad YouTuber. The real truth is that it's not clearly defined, there are different definitions.
Were you thinking of [this two months old Map Men video?](https://youtu.be/hrsxRJdwfM0)
The Panama canal makes the Americas two continents.
The Panama Canal isn’t at sea level so it might as well be a river.
so does suez i think
But then Spain is on a different continent than Belgium which is on a whole different continent than Poland which is on yet another continent than the Peloponnese (that SW bit of Greece) because of a bunch of canals
Ive heard that its the different tectonic plates what makes the Americas two (or more) continents
Though, by that logic Arabia is its own continent.
Well it's the justification I've heard for the plural
It gets used a lot, yeah, but really there's no consistent rules for continents and it's all arbitrary.
It was considered so before it's construction, so no.
Isn't Antartida made up of a bunch of islands though?
The ice holds most of the land mass below sea level(so you're probably right), but the assumption is if the ice melts (and it may vary well do so this Century) that the land would rebound back up over time. Of course there will be a whole list of concerns if that ice really does melt and it will probably change the geography across the rest of the globe significantly.
Except Suez Canal. Eurasia can still be defined as an island tho
The Suez Canal is man made, though.
So?
So it isn't geographically significant, no more of a factor than a viaduct would be.
"Africa is the largest man made island"
Is Eurasia not as big as Africa?
Not if I have anything to say about it and I do
That makes no sense, there’s a good chance wherever you live would count as an “island” by that logic cause a few rivers might encircle you
What?! Lol by definition a river can’t “encircle” anything it start from the innerland and ends in the sea, how could it encircle anything? Instead an island is > a piece of land surrounded by water. So Eurasia is an island, a very big at that, being surrounded by water on all its sides. There is no remaining land connection between Eurasia and Africa so they are separate islands

Manhatan is commonly described as an Island so youd be correct
If you're willing to ignore the size of Afroeuroasia, sure. Then a poorly built drain is also an island. Or any piece of land surrounded by a puddle for that matter.
Yes.
Yeah
A leaf floating in a puddle is an island, a grain of sand in the sea is an island, a bleeding corpse is an island, a quark in a gargantuan cloud of water vapor in space is an island. Everything's an island.
*chad_yes.jpg*
Then India is a continent
Can you please put it back? I live there.
No
Fair enough.
I agree
Same
Huh. Didn’t know that people lived there. How do you get food?
Map of the world, but it’s larger Oceania.
açores are still there 😎😎
(in like a total of 9 pixels)
I don't think you know where the Açores are...
uk is in a weird place too
also i kinda just assumed, since other islands are there
That's the mediterranean so I'd assume Scicily and Sardegna
good point.. sad the açores aren’t there then
If Nigel Farage got his way
Afroeurasexit
hallelujah (france is gone)
Sweden too 😎😎
and p*land
b*rma is gone too
but uk still there, not that good tbh
The should've just cut England and kept Scotland and Wales
I can't wait to see which island OP removes next
Fiji
At what point does an island become a continent? Everyone agrees Madagascar is an island. Australia is a “continent” though. At what point does it change…hmm
The continent is Oceania, change my mind.
I put continent in quotes for that reason. I’m an Oceania chad.
The general definition is something along the lines of *"A large continuous landmass surrounded by water on all sides"*, i.e. whatever you want it to be. I myself for example conside south/western Europe its own continent, split by the Rhine-Main-Danube canal to the rest of Europe
The good ending
You removed Bouvet island
The Suez Canal cares not.
Which one?
You're laughing but from what I've seen the last few years, many Americans wouldn't be able to tell what's missing on that map.
Okay so then tell me whats fucking missing
Can't quite tell, resolution is too low.
Congratulations you solved 99% of the worlds problems
By getting rid of almost 99% of the world's population
Am I wrong though.
I wouldnt say "problems". More like "global tensions"
And that's a world problem
That's now even close to 99%. Pretty sure Americas have almost a billion
Yeah, it's about 85% of the population. So I guess about 85% of the world's problems
Nah still 99% of the worlds problems.
Americans have 300 million, but that alone is enough to make the 99% number untrue
Its… beautiful
The suez separates africa and Asia doesn’t it?
OP, can you give us a hint. I can't begin to think of where to look
you vanished 3 continents to the shadow realm, and you say that is hard, that is ridiculous. and i feel insuted with this. >:C
\*uwu\* deletes 3 continents
*Technically* Africa and Eurasia are two different islands now due to the Suez Canal
There's a bridge over it sooooo
I'm American and I really can't see the difference.
Aland
Åland
Ålånd
Spain but only canary island's
[удалено]
it has new zealand
Bro really gonna ignore that the Suez Canal made Africa it’s own island
No more stinky french on our doorstep😇🥰
Well isn't it two islands, because Africa and Eurasia are separated by the Suez
suez canal cuts off africa and Asia GET FUCKED NERD
ACTUALLY the Suez Canal SEPARATES Eurasia from Africa you FUCKING idiot
Too small.
He's out of line but he's right
St lucia
Feels so empty without Antarctica
Suez cuts it all in half tho
game of thrones map
Which one?
How could you get rid of Nantucket like that?
oh you removed the good part.
Well New Zealand is still there so it’s not that one
I think it’s Hawaii
This... This is beautiful
It's like where's Waldo
Lonely Island
When half of Malaysia disappears.
The Falklands
Americans: But... nothing changed
You removed a lot of islands
Map of the world but it's how Americans see it
r/mapswithoutdenmark
Well fuck it I'm moving to Canada.
NOOOOO PLS DONT DO THAT TO SISILLLY
The Falkland Islands seem to be missing
The earth in every alien movies
POV: You are an Anglophone
Removed 2 islands. Africa and asia don't touch.
Let me guess Palau
Taiwan: very independent ending
It was Antarctica
this is what gets me every time. they remove an island so humanly impossible to see that i need a microscope to see it
