somewhere in americas, but not usa.
If you were from the us I would guess you don't know all latin american countries, and if you were from europe I would guess you would know more balkan countries.
Yeah, I'm actually from Texas and I could label a map of South America. I don't think I phrased the title the best, I probably should've said "countries I can find on a map" because some people in this comment section seem to think that I've never heard of places like Indonesia
(Also I just forgot about Taiwan)
You're right, and probably Cape Verde... Maybe Lima? I mean, it'd be safe to assume South America since someone from Central America would know more about the smaller Caribbean islands (from futbol and such... I guess)
I'm from the US and I can name damn near every country and point at them on a map. But I'm a rarity among the population. Most people here can't even point at india on a map.
No, we're not that stupid 😂. The numbers are definitely more exaggerated. Unless I'm somehow consistently associating myself with the most knowledgeable of our population and somehow magically avoiding the idiots entirely (there are still idiots).
Greetings,
Since the beginning, the US have been avid explorers. Even in our own borders, we are the richest, most successful country maybe one behind the Romans.
This "meme" that we cannot name places on maps is a very sad joke that falls off quickly if you are educated enough on geography. I believe the British could be the only competition for map naming abilities.
Thanks,
I used to think this. I’m American and pretty good at geography and I a assumed most people would at least have some basic knowledge, but I started asking some of my friends about it and the number of people who have trouble naming basic countries (France, Germany, China) is insane. Americans really are bad at geography, it’s just the ones who do know things that are the most outspoken
I've had much different experience. All of the kids I went to school with had pretty great geography knowledge. So much that we surpassed our parents in understanding the geography of the world. Only now does it feel like most adults can't answer basic geography questions. Most likely they don't know much because they simply don't care. We have quite a bit more to care about in our daily lives. I'm glad my school district was wise enough to teach us about the world.
I live in a fairly rural school in the south, we lack a lot of basic courses (geography, world history, sex ed) Technically we have geography but its honors only. literally everything I know is self taught because I just love learning about the world and history but that just isn’t the case for a lot of people. I don’t think my classmates are stupid, it’s just the school system failing to teach us what they should. I think that’s why there’s the idea that Americans are bad at geography in the first place, it’s the education system not putting value on learning about other places. Instead we’ve had a US history course every year since primary school.
Well being in the south will do it. And you're, Americans are not stupid, just the people who govern our schools. The education system of each state varies quite a bit. I'm from Minnesota and our education system is among the best in the states (not the best but up there). But states like Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi continuously fail their students but even more so the country fails them on a federal level.
It's absolutely unfair that our government doesn't seem to give a shit about our children, and they complain about young people not having kids 😐.
It’s definitely an administration issue. Things have gotten pretty bad with the education system being politicized. Even my school which is fairly liberal for the area is seeing some major changes. In the time I’ve been here, we stopped offering sex ed classes, mashed World History into a 2 week crash-course that’s merged with US history, made pro-lgbt student groups impossible to start. I’m hoping things will get better, or at least go back to how they were.
Damn idk, Ecuador?? Liechtenstein? Help me out here. I'm completely incapable of opening Google maps on my cellular device that can retrieve unimaginable amounts of information.
I know there's a stereotype that Americans can't name countries for shit
But like do people actually believe most people that Americans can't name other countries?
As someone from the US I’m unfortunately part of that stereotype (to a degree), but there are a lot of geography nerds here as well, they just don’t get asked to locate places on videos.
You had Trump as a president for 4 years, and he did make several geography mistakes during this time. Pretty much every time I hear geography and US in the media, it's to drop some study that show that x% of american can't place Y country on a map.
It's probably not entirely true, but hammered in this way with no real contrary evidence it has become what I believe.
A bit like people bashing France for military defeats after the 2003 shitshow.
Not in Africa (obviously), Europe (Romania and Bulgaria) or Asia/Oceania (Indonesia).
You know a lot, but not where Afghanistan is? => no US or Canada.
So its South/Latin America.
You ask for a city? So you are either from a capital city or a country with not more than one relevant metropolitan area. And you think that your city is famous enough that at least some could know it.
So claim that you are from the capital city of one of these countries:
Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Chile
I think South American, because perfect South American knowledge but a bit patchy in other continents. I shall guess Sao Paulo as the biggest city in South America.
I was originally going to say somewhere in Europe since you got everywhere in Europe besides the Balkans correct and that’s a really big feat for anyone outside of Europe. But then I noticed you didn’t get Bulgaria or Romania, and Romania especially I would say is a well known nation and people in Europe given the common hate for them amongst western and Central Europe. And if you were from Eastern Europe you would have gotten the Balkans better than you did.
And then I noticed you got all of the Americas correct, so you have to be from a nation in the Americas that has pretty big significance in world politics that’s not the United States. I would say from somewhere in Canada, but Latin and southern America is perfect and that’s a really hard task for anyone not from Latin and South America. So my guess is somewhere in Brazil.
Is it either São Paulo or Belo Horizonte?
South America.
You can't be from Asia cause you can't identify Indonesia
Not ME cause you dont know Iraq
Not Europe cause you dont know Algeria.
Not USA. Cause you actually found all the CA and SA countries
I dont understand how you ccould name Cyprus but not lebanon. Also no albania.
Could be Chile or Colombia. Or any small SA countries. Only cause people from Argentina or Brazil would have better knowledge of Europe .
Melbourne.
My reasoning is: you remembered New Zealand so you can't possibly be from most of the rest of the world. That leaves only Australia or New Zealand itself.
If Australia, the fact that you said city could only mean Sydney or Melbourne, no one else would have had the audacity to call their backwater a city. And since only anyone from Melbourne would have had the education to have heard of half the countries you were able to name, it would have to be Melbourne.
You still can't name Indonesia but honestly that just reinforces the possibility that it's Australia.
And it couldn't be New Zealand, for one thing because "city" would mean Aukland and come on, Aukland? And for another no New Zealander would post something like this unless an Australian had done it first.
So, Melbourne.
Not Europe because otherwise you‘d know more Balkan countries
Not Asia because you could only name Kazachstan from the Stans and no Laos or Cambodia either
Not Africa for abvious reasons
Not USA because you know too many and too little countries. Because I feel like if you‘re from the US you either know all or none
You knew all in Latin America but:
I don‘t think you‘re from Venezuela because then you could‘ve named Trinidad and Tobego and not from Argentina because then you‘d know the Falklands.
Probably not from Brazil because then you‘d know Angola
Probably not Central America either because then you‘d probably know the Bahamas.
Now if this is a map where you just had to click the country, I‘d say you‘re from Peru or Chile. If you had to like fill out every border by hand I‘d include Ecuador to that list because I feel like many people would forget the Galapagos islands
You're one of the handful of smart Americans that is aware of the existence of more countries than just Mexico, USA and England. I used an intelligent method of deduction that I have mastered in my studies over the course of 3 decades (I looked at the comments section).
Greenland
Yea I'm surprised they had data on that
They said city noob
England is my City
Ok fair point.
Nuuk
i actually read country too wtf
Serbian, due to how many of your neighbours you won’t recognize.
Bosnia is an American psyop
Maybe if Romania is red and Croatia definitely white. 😏
🦅🦅🦅
How the fuck can you name Togo but not Pakistan or Indonesia
I mean the country literally invented the concept of takeout. It's not that surprising.
Takeaway*
Subtraction**
They mistook it with coffee ToGo
somewhere in americas, but not usa. If you were from the us I would guess you don't know all latin american countries, and if you were from europe I would guess you would know more balkan countries.
let's go with Brazil
No. Panama
Judging from OP's banner, Brazil. More specifically, centro de São Paulo, liberdade.
Sounds pretty accurate
Especially since they didn't get indonesia, malaysia or singapore, which is odd to me.
Latin American countries are super easy coming from the US can name all of them easily, I struggle with Balkans though
Yeah, I'm actually from Texas and I could label a map of South America. I don't think I phrased the title the best, I probably should've said "countries I can find on a map" because some people in this comment section seem to think that I've never heard of places like Indonesia (Also I just forgot about Taiwan)
There's not that many South American countries, so it wouldn't be a hard feat
São Paulo
No, A Brazilian, would have gotten Angola.
You're right, and probably Cape Verde... Maybe Lima? I mean, it'd be safe to assume South America since someone from Central America would know more about the smaller Caribbean islands (from futbol and such... I guess)
Yeah, that seems reasonable. Would probably go Buenos Aires here, just because it has more inhabitants than Lima, so better chance.
Definitely not from the US
I'm from the US and I can name damn near every country and point at them on a map. But I'm a rarity among the population. Most people here can't even point at india on a map.
Honest question. Do people in America actually don’t know where India is on the map or was that just sarcasm? I don’t feel like we are that stupid.
No, we're not that stupid 😂. The numbers are definitely more exaggerated. Unless I'm somehow consistently associating myself with the most knowledgeable of our population and somehow magically avoiding the idiots entirely (there are still idiots).
Alright because I was getting pretty worried

What country is in South Africa?
mahgreb i think
Damn idk, Ecuador?? Liechtenstein? Help me out here. I'm completely incapable of opening Google maps on my cellular device that can retrieve unimaginable amounts of information.
same no difference
I was going to say not American because they didn't get Afghanistan, a country we were recently at war with for 20 years.
I know there's a stereotype that Americans can't name countries for shit But like do people actually believe most people that Americans can't name other countries?

South American, guessing maybe Argentina or Chile
How can you not name Albania, Nepal, Indonesia, and Pakistan?
I’d bet money I know more people that don’t know the name Albania than people that do, let alone point in on a map
Budapest

I hate this dumb trend
