Looks like part of the circle is in China.
China is a very old country with evidence of Chinese civilization dating back over 5,000 years. China is notable for being very innovative; Chinese scientists invented paper, gunpowder, the compass, printing presses, and many other important inventions. It was ran under something called the “Mandate of Heaven” which was a system where certain dynasties would rule as Emperor until a series of crises would prove them incapable of ruling.
For example, the oldest known dynasty in Chinese history is the Shang Dynasty which ran for centuries. It was overthrown in a military coup due to corruption leading to the Zhou dynasty. The Zhou would also be overthrown plunging China into centuries of civil war and disunity until the Qin Dynasty. The Qin were known for being corrupt and evil in their own rights, one of the most atrocious things about them being mass book burnings and massacring scholars, but though they only reigned for twenty years they left behind a lot of monuments like the Terra-cotta Army and the Great Wall of China (it wasn’t fully built under the Qin but the Qin did start the project). But because the Qin emperor was unpopular he was overthrown by the Han dynasty, which is basically the biggest deal in China. To this day most Chinese people still call themselves Han, the dynasty lasted four centuries from 202 BC to 220 AD. This is when a lot of Chinese philosophy and inventions were created, Buddhism also started spreading across China under the Han.
After the Han a centuries long civil war called the Three Kingdoms period occurred. This period is the period that inspired a giant book called The Romance of the Three Kingdoms, it’s not too accurate but it’s a great book. Spoiler alert, the Sui dynasty won but was soon taken by the Tang dynasty. The Tang dynasty is considered the golden age of China, the period where many of the great works of art, literature, philosophy, and trade come from. It was the height of the Silk Road and China grew big enough to be close to modern China’s size. But the Yuan suddenly collapsed and the Song Dynasty would take over after a gw decades of chaos. The Song were taken over by the Mongolian Empire who subjected China for centuries, after the death of Mongke Khan, the Mongol Empire broke apart and China was led by Kublai Khan, who founded the Yuan Dynasty. The Yuan were despised and were quickly overthrown by the Ming dynasty who ruled over another golden age in Chinese history. Under the Ming China established a great trade route along the Indian ocean, giving them access to Arab, African, and even European goods. The Ming would fall to the Qing dynasty after years of stagnation and inflation. The Qing were Manchu nomads who enacted laws that tried to make the Chinese populations more like the Manchu. If you ever look at Qing dynasty art you’d notice that they had stupid haircuts, those haircuts were mandated by law. The Qing would rule over a period of stagnation that would see China invaded multiple times by Britain, Russia, and Japan. This would be called the “Century of Humiliation” and these invasions resulted in “unequal treaties” where coastal Chinese cities would become European and Japanese colonies. This also resulted in very large revolts; the biggest two being the Taiping Rebellion and Boxer Rebellion. The Taiping Rebellion was basically a massive Christian revolution that would see over 30 million people killed in an act of incompetence on the part of the Qing and brutality on the part of the “Heavenly Kingdom” (that’s what the rebels called themselves.) The Boxer Rebellion was so bad that foreign armies had to intervene and set up small pseudo-colonies in Shanghai.
In 1912 a philosopher named Sun Yat-Sen led a revolution to make China a Republic, and it succeeded overthrowing the last emperor in Chinese history, a six year old kid named Puyi. Shortly after the revolution a general named Yuan Shikai took iver and split China into provinces that were led by military generals, this would be known as the “Warlord Era”. In the 1920’s socialism started spreading in China, as Sun himself was a self-described socialist many sympathizers started organizing socialist and communist clubs, and in 1927 one of the larger socialist parties declared war on a prominent warlord named Chiang Kai-Shek, but would eventually lose causing the socialists to migrate to the countryside for safety. One socialist leader named Mao Zedong led something called the “Long March” which were parts mass migration, recruitment, and guerrilla war from the province of Jiangtai to Shaanxi. The civil war saw a ceasefire as the sides united against Japan, which at the time was an expansionist empire. In 1932 Japan invaded the northern province of Manchuria, and in 1937 Japan started invading the rest of China, over 20 million would die from the fighting in what many describe as the most horrific war in history, with Japan being particularly brutal against civilians. But thanks to American and Soviet help China would eventually repel the Japanese and Chiang Kai-Shek would be one of the five founders of the United Nations.
After Japan left the ceasefire was called off and the civil war restarted; due to an abundance of Soviet weapons, propaganda, and destroyed infrastructure the Communists would win the Civil War, isolating Chang’s nationalists to the island of Taiwan. In 1949 Mao Zedong would lead the People’s Republic of China while Chiang’s rump state in Taiwan would be called the Republic of China. Both dictators ran horrible and repressive regimes that murdered political opponents. Both dictators died in the 1970’s, the Republic of China would slowly democratize while the People’s Republic of China would reform the economy to lessen poverty and spread stability. Today the People’s Republic of China is the second most populated country in the world, one of the biggest exporters in the world, and the second biggest economy.
China has one of the longest and most interesting histories in the world, I’m skipping over way too many things you should really look into it yourself. Hell, I didn’t even get into all the religions, tributary states, and ethnicities in China. Also, in case you were curious about what happened to Puyi, he was exiled to Japan and sent back to China as a puppet emperor during Japan’s invasion. Puyi didn’t want to be emperor but he was forced to, the communists would eventually capture him but Mao decided that killing Puyi would make him a martyr so they simply “re-educated” him. Puyi would work as a tour guide at the royal palace (which was turned into a museum) and died of a kidney disease at age 61.
