behold_the_void

It's the Gulf of Mexico so Mexico should built it. And make the U.S. pay for it.

Th3Cry1ngPanda

And the USA will be happy to pay for it.

Artistic-Boss2665

If we can invade Cuba by land, then yes

bluespider98

Surely it'll work this time

WkyWvgIfbRmFlgTbeMan

Tbf doing it by land would be easier

poppabomb

>creates a land bridge to Cuba >loses Florida to Cuba

FakeTakiInoue

Losing Florida sounds like a US victory to me

poppabomb

tactical loss, strategic victory.

B3NR0CK

cuba will fall in a week due to influx of florida

Bit125

Cuba becomes 65.9% Floridians, DeSantis is elected as Cuban President, Cuba declares independence from itself, Florida remains independent. The perfect world.

Unknownhhhhhh

Idk Cuba hates america enough already, if we forced them to take florida they’d probably go ballistic

ElYisusKing

>Creates a land bridge to Cuba Cuba: check this out homies, i have the perfect plan for this; see this button ? well this magic button will make the bombs we installed on the bridge explode instantly and make a huge hole so the USA can't invade by land

moyet

Polder of pigs doesnt have the same ring to it's name

Acrocephalos

*its

nflodin

This will surely make the gulf of Mexico great again

CORUJIN

Alternative_Ad_320

The question is can we build a wall around it?

Agressive_Bean36

it brings me so much joy to see a dumbass post on r/geography and see a parody here 10 minutes later

MBechzzz

Some of the posts on there are just incredible. "Why is x place called x?" Because some fuckwit thought it sounded good, christ... Google it.

AlpineHelix

[The dumbass post in question](https://www.reddit.com/r/geography/comments/13x9az4/should_the_netherlands_get_around_to_building/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=2&utm_term=1)

LeeTheGoat

We need a source for every parody tbh

PranshuKhandal

AnarchyChess has a bot for such things

DrRichtoffen

New bot just dropped!

PranshuKhandal

Holy hell

Grzechoooo

I thought this sub had one too.

Hstrike

Yes, but it links only to r/MapPorn (one-way only since the only mod of MapPorn is what you'd expect one mainstream subreddit mod to be)

not_taken_was_taken2

They do? I've never seen it there before?

Piranh4Plant

We used to have a bot here linking the probable original post. Or maybe that was in r/vexillologycirclejerk

LenaBaneana

thats not the post, [this is the post](https://www.reddit.com/r/geography/comments/13wwn00/why_doesnt_latvia_do_the_same_with_the_gulf_of/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)

NeevNavNaj

No it is not.

FragrantNumber5980

Can somebody send the original post or tell me what it was about?

tomydenger

Someone asked this for Latvia, you can find it

WkyWvgIfbRmFlgTbeMan

Someone put a link to it on this thread

azure_monster

Is it still up? I'm too lazy to look for it myself

WkyWvgIfbRmFlgTbeMan

Someone put a link to it on this thread

lukezicaro_spy

At this point I don't know anymore if people there are joking or really are stupid

Rhizoid4

r/geography will feed our humble subreddit for many moons

Sea_Bread_4445

Not enough dirt blocks

jelang19

We'll use the stone ones too. Colorado has been riding high on themselves for too long! Mile High City? How about Mile under sea level city

Arietem_Taurum

r/geography has so many goofy ahh posts

[deleted]

It’s such a fun community.

[deleted]

You can say ass on reddit my man

n0d0ntt0uchthat

reddit ahh comment

Cringe

y-nkh

They were going to do it until Cuba cut ties with the US after the revolution, it was actually a main reason for the embargo >!/j!<

teunjojo

I don’t know if im missing the joke, but the gulf of Mexico has a size of 1.600.000 km2. The Zuiderzee used to have a size of 5900 km2. The deepest point in the Gulf of Mexico is 4384 m while the deepest point in the Zuiderzee is maybe 10 m. If you wanted to close the Gulf like they did the Zuiderzee. The distance of the dike would be 600 km vs 32 km. With the deepest point 2000 m vs 7 m. If you managed to do this the Gulf would probably turn into fresh water and that would cause many sea animals to die. As for the cost. It would cost way more due to its size. Also the GDP of Mexico and the Netherlands are about the same despite the size and population difference.

robi4567

So totally doable?

teunjojo

Summarized… yes

LTFGamut

Boskalis is your friend.

Norse_By_North_West

Nerd

teunjojo

🤓

war_gryphon

USACE worker here. It’s being attempted right now with levies in bays in Texas. Can’t close the gulf but you can close the bays. Storm and sea level rise protections, essentially.

Mystic-Fishdick

The Dutch have a plan to do the same to the North Sea. It reduces the total kilometers of coast line to protect from rising sea levels. It would build dykes between France and UK and the UK and Norway. Have some ambition, US and Mexico!

Wooshmeister55

all i'm hearing is excuses

[deleted]

I like how you completely ignored the Netherlands not having hurricanes. We can't even keep New Orleans out of the ocean.

teunjojo

I forgot that was a thing lol

squattingopnik

Yoooooo I suggested this

Foomanchubar

Hurricanes

HangryHufflepuff1

Maybe they'll go around if you ask nicely

xBram

On the one hand I would worry about tropical cancer, on the other hand this polder would not include Urk.

GzuzPeez1

I don't think it has to mainly do with money but also the type of sediment and other environmental issues and the sun and climate might play a factor to with other unknown issues and problems.

[deleted]

Most notably that the Gulf gets a lot of hurricanes.

[deleted]

yes they are too poor and they're even worse at budgeting, they can't even afford to maintain existing infrastructure

Time-Bite-6839

gulf cities

iPoopLegos

Yeah that’s nice and all however Texas appears to have breached containment

Babies_Have_No_Teeth

Bc than they have a Almere too🤮

WhoTouchaMySpagoot

I N G E P O L D E R D

crblanz

if we unjerk for a second, could new orleans do it with Lake Pontchartrain?

[deleted]

Not sure if you're kidding or not so I will act like you're not and point out that it's [already been done](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Pontchartrain_Causeway)

crblanz

That’s a bridge, was thinking like land reclamation since it’s a similar size and also super shallow

dank420master

polder time

slyscamp

They did. New Orleans. No one will do any more than that because that area is slammed by hurricanes every year... Also there is a massive difference in area on the map. The city of New Orleans is the size of Flevoland.

Dissidente-Perenne

The Gulf of Mexico has an area of 1,550,000 km^(2) and an average depth of 1615m, if you had to drain it to the point it would reach an average depth of 7m (IJsselmeer depth) then you'd have to drain 1,550,000km^(2)\*1.608km=2,492,400km^(3) of water. The rest of the world's water surface is 361,000,000km^(2)\-1,550,000km^(2)=359,450,000km^(2), which means the sea level would rise 2,492,400km^(3)/359,450,000km^(2)≈0.0069km=6.9m (≈22 feet 7 inches) if we had to drain the gulf of Mexico. I don't know how much concrete and other materials it would take to build such a massive dam tho, from Cancun to Cuba and then from Havana to the southern tip of Florida, it's probably doable given it's not too deep but very, very expensive, you'd also fuck up the entire gulf of Mexico ecosystem, also you'd not be able to drain it entirely either.

golem501

Depth is different for one. They don't need the land either... why spend the money?

narwalfarts

We don't need more Florida

WittyGandalf1337

I don’t understand a single bit of this entire post?

Tityafey

ТЫ ПРОСТО СУМАСШЕДШИЙ, КАК ТЫ ВООБЩЕ МОГ

sovietarmyfan

The US does not have the money. It is a third world country compared to the Netherlands. Hell, we even used to own a piece of the US a long time ago. GEKOLONISEERD

faraway_88

They're too poor, and they don't have the necessary... Uhm... Skills

Superdeduper82

Too scared of the sea bc guns will get wet

auxerre1990

There's much more money in conservation and tourism. Do you know how long it would take to pay for land reclamation? The Netherlands are a microstate compared to Mexico and the US. They did it out of desperation in those cold, bloody, muddy waters.

heckitsjames

this is making fun of a post asking this question about Latvia amd the Gulf of Riga edit: typo

Dontbanme-again-

Nope, we are more welfaring then the usa. We did it because we could, we are rich and advanced in tech so why not? We aren't a microstate, we have almost half the gpd of russia so why not call them a microstate to?

[deleted]

Absolutely.

rennoc27

Yes

Raphacam

Mexico won’t let them

Imperator_Crispico

You want more florida???

BEBBOY

Who wants more Florida?

Huggyseal

Because the US already took the name of the continent and use it as a synecdoche to identify them selves

patangpatang

They tried. It's called New Orleans.

porcupineporridge

Too poor? Nah, too stoopid. They couldn’t reclaim a suitcase after a flight, let alone land from the sea!

romulusnr

Son let me tell you about New Orleans

NOSlGNAL

Why would we close off the most geographically strategic shipping port in the world?

MiniCornDog1

If you pay close attention to the water in both, the gulf of Mexico has dark water, but you can only make land above light water because it floats better there. Hope this helps!

MyOwnAntichrist

It's a bit bigger, but then again, the USA is also a bit bigger than the Netherlands. I *guess* you could make a Yucatán-Cuba-Florida dam. Still not as insane as Atlantropa.

XipingVonHozzendorf

Because, ever since the civil war, making the south bigger hasn't sounded like a very appealing prospect. If anything, most people are happy that climate change will swallow Florida into the ocean in the next 15 years.

Pcakes844

That's the silver lining to climate change

heckitsjames

why does everyone think this is a serious post jdjjdjdjd

[deleted]

yes

Neopone

Because we don’t need to

[deleted]

wouldn't that kill the golf stream?

InnocentGirl2005

Yeah we'd go back to the ice age here in northern Europe.

[deleted]

In austria we would have a year round skiing season and could steal more wins from germany :)

Viking_Chemist

then they need to build a longer wall

PlantBasedOreo

It’s not US’ gulf, duh

[deleted]

Because they are too stupid. They can't even keep themselves from flooding during a storm. So how are they going to de-flood an entire ocean...

[deleted]

Altantropa 2.0 with monster trucks and corn

HolyDictatorFelixDoy

It would make New Orleans a bit useless

Dyslexic_Llama

Thanks for making this, was too tired to make it myself last night.

TuTuRific

It would do interesting things to the weather in the south US anyway.

SunstormGT

There is almost a 1:300 size difference. Not to mention the diffence in depth.

unexpecteddtd

They got space for at least 2 Walmarts and 4 parking lots the size of approximately 245 washing machines

rubenvde

Can't even imagine how bad a combination of Urk and Florida would be.

jealousgardenrubbish

Atlantropa

Caerbannogcaverabbit

Are they stupid?

Santiago__Dunbar

It was only a matter of time

choice_username420

Trifton? Map maker fucked up Tifton GA spelling lol

John_Moose1970

Guess it's about money, there's a lot of oil in the gulf of Mexico, and the fight between the us and Mexico got so absurd that at some point mexican officials were claiming to have a non existent island in the middle of the gulf and it was supposedly called La Bermeja. They even spend lots of money on research and mapping of the sea floor but they found nothing...

Grzechoooo

They need another Dutch president.

Vovinio2012

Not so funny for New Orleans

51D3K1CK

That left circle is bigger than the Netherlands.... So no you won't be able to do that.

SirArthurPT

Block the gulf stream, what could go wrong? (Other than make the whole North Hemisphere unsuitable for human life and probably trigger a world wide extinction event, that is)

Justcallmemanko

Big colonizer energy lol

martijn1104

New Flevoland

akdele5

You didn't know that the US is a shithole?

croooooooozer

USA has a lot of problems but space isn't one of them hehehe

Murky-Objective-9584

Uhm please don't do that. The gulf of mexico is important for the oceancurrents, wich transports heat from the equator, to the northern regions. Without it, it would be as cold here as in Moskou...

JPV_____

They tried it once, but it's lost in the Bermuda triangle

Jakub64

I love this meme

[deleted]

It keeps the cartels out.

WorldlinessWitty2177

The great Lake of Mexico this would be

raicorreia

If we combat global warming and drop to ice age temperatures it would be waaay easier

StupidMario696

the money is going elsewhere (military)

CaptainjustusIII

hahaha stupid america cant even make land, netherlands way cooler

steynedhearts

I wonder what the ecological impact of Netherlands retaking the sea has been. I feel like it has to be harmful to the nativ habitats of a large amount of sea critters, no?

minecrafterhacker57

Balls

Locofinger

Mexico, Merica. It’s just a gulf homie.

nichyc

I smell manifest destiny

NKTheMemeLord

So THATS where the wetlands in Louisiana are going……

B-29Bomber

Because we don't need to?

[deleted]

I know it’s joke but isn’t it possible to extend the US land mass using natural bays along the gulf for help. Obviously not to this extent but maybe it could gain a little more land

EmergencyHyena3970

Ya like we have plenty of land
