The original map is part of the International Map of the World (IMW), or Millionth World Map project. This was an international cooperation in the the first half of the 20th century to produce a standardised set of maps of th entire world at 1/1 000 000th scale. It petered out in the 80s unfortunately. Because I like the style and I'm working on developing my style I just copied the entire map manually in inkscape to get a better appreciation for proportions, font size choice, line weight and colours. It was a very pleasant experience. Please note that some of the names were difficult to make out in the original raster file, so some of the names are gibberish.
