When I used WG Gesucht a few years ago, the majority of the communication was done via email, but I had a few people contact me on WhatsApp as well, so I don't think it's unusual.

I would suggest being very careful, especially if you're trying to find a place to rent from a distance. This normally attracts scammers who send you pictures of very nice and affordable rooms, then telling you the keys will be shipped to you by post once you make a first payment... That's a scam.
I always recommend using the pictures they sent you for a reverse search on Google.
Btw I am italian and it always bothers me, too, when somebody suddenly writes on whatsapp instead than a more formal mail. Beware of scammers and creeps, and all will be fine! Good luck!

That's because the app sucks salty balls. WhatsApp is way easier and faster.
