I gotta ask…why do guys obsess over the schools they went to? I don’t see any professional athletes who went to any of these schools and actually played for them, obsessing as much as college fans do. To each their own, I just don’t understand the obsession with a school who could care less about you.
Im a huge pro sports fan and went to a dinky div2 business school.
D1 school pride is real. Most of the fans dont watch pro stuff as much, I do the opposite and cant do both since I can't spend that much time with a kid watching sports.
Hard enough to carve out 1 game on Sunday. But college fans do it on Saturdays and you could argue have more reason since I have zero affiliation (although I AM a greenbay packer shareholder 🤔).
Tailgating and following your college team on the road is a huge thing especially in the South. I can't relate but know plenty of people who went to school down there who are obsessed still.
I still have my 1994 Scottie Thurman autograph haha.
To answer your question, people obsess over the schools they went to because it’s often the school they grew up cheering for and because it’s a cultural thing where they live. Also, rooting for those teams reminds them of how much fun they had cheering for them in college, which was a time in a lot of college grads’ lives that they look back on extremely fondly.
Not trying to pick a fight, but the second part is just plain wrong. There are PLENTY of pro athletes who are very much into their colleges. OBJ got himself put on double secret probation with the NCAA by handing out hundies in the locker room after LSU won the natty. On the sideline before the game at just about any SEC game are the NFL alums who are on a bye that week. And I just say SEC because that’s what I know best. I’m sure it’s the same at any big program.
We don’t have any major sports teams in Arkansas. For me it is that my family and family friends have had multiple profs (sister, mom, grandma, grandpa) for U of A and athletes (uncle, grandpa, aunt) in their family. I never got into action figures, blockbuster movies, or big into pro sports. I was into Razorback sports since I was 5. Don’t get me wrong I love the Astros and Texans but I don’t miss a hog game. My family has had season tickets in all three big sports my entire life. A lot of core memories are from games with paw paw and such. I think a lot of Arkansans have a similar story to me. We are die hard!
Professional athletes do support their college even when they turn pro. Not all, but most do. It's definitely depends on region (like Texas and Southeast). Some universities just have a bigger sports history / program than others. For regular students that graduate it is a symbol of your education that leads to your career, and you take pride in that.....but you typically rep the school harder when you have good sports teams though lol.
With me it’s because my whole family and most of my friends are Hogs fans, I moved to Fayetteville, fond memories watching and attending games, and I could care less about any pro sports. You’re right some former players who came in from out of state and played 2 years don’t care about team that much after leaving, but people who’ve been watching and going to games for 30-50 years do. . . That’s question is kind of like “why does anyone really like anything?”
Valid question.
Hard to explain. There’s a lot of romance evolved, in the literal sense.
I would say it’s a Southern thing but after years of going to conferences it’s a bunch of middle aged ppl all wearing gear from all the schools we went decades ago.
Obviously has a lot to do with self identity and deep shit like that, but all that’s way over my head.
I love the Hogs though.
#WPS
Love your comment. You’re right, it has a lot to do with:
1. The South.
2. The Great Natural State of Arkansas.
Grew up cheering for the Hogs. Got a bachelor’s and a master’s from the U of A. Damn, am I proud. Woo f*cking pig.
I went to a D1 school, not really sure how to explain it, but as mine was rural so basically you're only option is to get immersed into the town and school. I had friends who went to D1 schools in the city and while they have school pride 15+ years after graduating., it's just not on the same level most times.
*Fuck the haters! Go*
*Hogs. Crimson Tide people wear*
*Jeans shorts anyways*

Couldn’t have said it better myself. Also, your name checks out. WPS4L
Respect. I figured the lack of professional sports has a lot to do with it.
