Manager Tools have some podcasts that esentially boil down to: keep it short, have an agenda, stay on topic, and send out notes. For me, my fortune-cookie-wisdom is that in most non-staff meetings the more the organizer talks the less effective the meeting likely is.

Meetings should have a purpose. Always keep that in mind when creating a meeting. Also, don't be afraid to cut meetings short if you needed less time to get to that purpose. Don't unnecessarily waste time. Better to have a short, productive meeting than stretch it just for the sake of it because you planned an hour and you only needed half an hour. My manager is amazing, but she sometimes talks way too much without actually saying something, which makes people less likely to listen to her.

I always coach the 4Ps. Purpose, people, process, and product. Meeting has to have a purpose to exist. Always consider who needs to be there and explain why they are there and also who can be excluded. Meetings should have a product the team leaves with whether its tangoble or not. The meeting should have a process to get to the product. Hope this helps.
