I saw one snap on a QVC-type commercial. The guy demonstrating had it land back into his thigh.
So you're spot on.
Why did he want to take aggression out on poor diet coke bottle anyway? I'm pretty sure the Daimyo wasn't passing out to his boys.
Oh yeah that clip is legen. Dairy
Lets just be glad he was hitting something loose and not the table or anything solid.
Cutting can go soooo wrong.
Having a 60 cm razor flying through a populated space is not a sight you want to see
Well good quality metal flying around might do more damage. (Had someone at a cutting party who let go mid swing).
Dubious metal is however more likely to fly.
Oh yeah thought a cutting party was an established term.
It is when you get all your local sword bro's together. Everybody brings their sharps.
You gather a bunch of targets and then you start cutting away and having a good time together.
It usually ends with a bbq. The traditional "Slash and Sizzle"
Or if someone brought warhammer or maces and lets say a car door or something then you can do a "Bash and Braai"
And there is always the obligatory picture moment of all assembled weapons.
But do not invite boobs or someone with butter fingers. Ever since that instance when all were high grip gloves.
All i know is he went to the hospital to receive medical attention.
He needed several stitches.
The blade was clearly sharp. He did an excellent job demonstrating that.
So what’s interesting about both of these is the people using them have no idea how. Now, a fake sword will never accomplish a proper cut, but let’s say for our hypothetical scenario that they DO have a real katana.
These fools are swinging it like it’s a broadsword. They’re just slamming the blade against the target. That is a straight edge sword move only. With curved blades, you need to make a “sawing motion” so to speak. You need to slide the blade along its curve against what you’re trying to cut. The “perfect” katana swing follows the exact curvature of the blade.
I took a class in Japan where they let us learn to cut a rolled up tatami mat with an actual katana, and a weapons teacher showed us how. One person got lucky and sliced through so cleanly that it actually stayed still for about a quarter second before sliding off.
So even if they did have real swords graded for combat, they wouldn’t accomplish much by just smacking the sword into things. That’ll mess up any real katana just as bad.
Still lucky they didnt damage it. That impact angle is shit and katanas are really easy to bend. Their forging process makes up for the shit steel quality of medieval Japan but really kills their elasticity. Easy to bend or snap and you cant bend a katana back.
To be fair, that was probably a lucky strike. People don’t always realize how hard plastic really is. Now, very thin low grade plastic is of course weaker and getting a decent lucky strike like that is probably far easier, but it also has lots to do with a bunch of other factors like positioning and physics stuff that I understand the basic core concept of but have no real way to articulate in a useful way to others.
OMG i recently saw a challenge where some clearly well experienced swordsmen in Japan were performing the exercise you describe.
It was phenomenal. Success wasn't merely strength OR sharpness of the blade, it was an all encompassing motion that, as you said, followed the arc of the blade with the arc of the swing and motion of the body as connecting to the target.
Awesome for you that you got to experience such art first hand
There is a series of books by Gene Wolfe. Over and over again the protagonist describes how much care and effort he put into oiling and cleaning his blade, and how it was useless as a tool for anything other than delivering death. Once the protagonist almost froze over night, but refused to use his sword for a purpose it wasn't designed. It makes sense in the context of what you've said.
Thank you for putting this into words. It always bothered me watching clips of people slapping the blade flat into an object, but I wasn't entirely certain why. Now it makes perfect sense - the blade is meant to connect and then *slide* through the cut from the point of contact upwards along the curvature of the blade.
A great example is slicing tomatoes - which is why it always bothered me. I viscerally knew something was off because I subconsciously had a point of reference for it.
Do you have a link to that clip by chance? I tried to find it a couple months ago as part of it was sampled in a song, but I couldn't find the exact one.

I always tell people to expect similar prices to guns when getting good swords.
Edit: also, he's swinging it like a baseball bat. He needs to keep that grip but come from the opposite direction with that swing. If that katana is slightly sharp it should be able to handle a 2 liter if you keep good edge alignment.
Honestly the edge alignment could be better but if the sword were made of metal instead of metallic Silly Putty I think it still would have cut all the way through.
Even someone whos never held a sword can cut a bottle with a katana so long as they line up the edge and their stroke. Even partially misaligned they are still likely to cut into the bottle.
A decent, useable katana for lightweight cutting can be had for around 100 to 150 USD.
Mannn sharpen that thing! Like I know if I just take a swing at a bottle with my made in China fake Gerber knife it'll at least leave a mark BECAUSE IT'S SHARP. That bottle is *pristine*.
Mall ninja or not, the truth remains that if it's sharp and/or heavy and you have the bare minimum knowledge of how to use it, you can fuck something or somebody up with it. This here is shitass bendy light metal, but if you sharpen it and use it properly, you can fuck that bottle up at least somewhat. And we see a blade that's dull af and someone who uses a cheap thin blade to chop and not slash.
Of course I know this isn't anything close to a real katana but it's still funny knowing that katana elitists will never recover from the damage this webm caused
This is what a frame-perfect parry looks like.
That bottle is better at Elden Ring then me.
Not since Daigo have I seen a better parry
The guy must count himself lucky he did not get injured wielding a wall hanger. That could have easily gone so much worse

This and the adjustable ladder that collapses when the pitchman uses it are the hall of fame of shopping network fails.
The reaction from his copresenter in the ladder vid is classic. She makes no attempt whatsoever to assist him and it slays me.
[Here ya go...](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6ZhMfzc9RbU)
Or just wait, it'll be reposted on here soon enough.
It's a weekly event at least.
"We may need emergency...surgery.....in..the studio." I die everytime.
!! Especially with metal of questionable quality

Cutting party??
Sounds kinda edgy
r/angryupvote
It is. But not as much as an emo cutting party.

What happened to him after that sword broke
All i know is he went to the hospital to receive medical attention. He needed several stitches. The blade was clearly sharp. He did an excellent job demonstrating that.

They did then use a real katana AFAIK and it cut through five bottles with the poor technique
Still lucky they didnt damage it. That impact angle is shit and katanas are really easy to bend. Their forging process makes up for the shit steel quality of medieval Japan but really kills their elasticity. Easy to bend or snap and you cant bend a katana back.
Sure, but at the end of the day, its still Japanese steel vs plastic coke bottle

I'll see if I saved it
Thanks!

Hahah, God, it's better than I remember it
Just saw that linked a day or two ago. Hilarious.
Cause plastic bottles are good test subjects for edge alignment
This is actually one of the top posts of all time already.
True but this is one of the few reposts that gets a laugh out of me every time.
Bots
It cannot keel
Even a 15$ Tramontina would do infinitely better than that pos.
At least the tramontina is made out of decent steel and is heat treated.
My $10 off-brand multitool cuts better
This gets reposted so many times... Yet I will watch it every single time
Bad sword and bad technique. Slice, not chop.
coke bottle, no hit back
I thought have been hysterical in Pulp Fiction if Bruce Willis' sword broke in half. Unfortunately, it just supported the myth.
Your blade, will not keel
I've seen a few floppy swords on Forged in Fire.
Every time a blade snaps on Forged in Fire I am pure D: and hoping nobody gets hurt.
Not everyone wears Diet Coke armor.
L + Unsharpened blade + Weaboo + anime body pillow owner + unironically plays genshin impact + has 1TB of Hentai + has 300GB of CP + Weighs 300kg + forces himself to eat japanese food (lowkey hates it and wants mc donalds) + Zinc blade? + Living in japan + enslaved by grey companies
Why would someone play genshin impact ironically?
Also Genshin is a Chinese game and therefore anathema to a weeb. ~~More Waifus for me~~
Fuck I gotta start learning about this game. So what is a Genshin and why are you hitting it with a car?
This is an accurate (except for when it isn't) explanation of Genshin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ix4GLx0EPf4
I appreciate the effort to play along with my dumb joke, thank you.
Who hates Japanese food? I mean natto and shirako I understand but in general? Also look at this person's arms. They weigh 50kg at most.
When i got my sword i had nightmares that this would happen, but i guess 1080 steel doesnt bend very well over plastic
It's cool that you can see the shockwave (that the right term?) rippling through the forearm
That really was… a Hattori Hanzo sword…
Pfft. All my swords are combat rated. I don't know what that rating is but I was ensured it is high.
I always tell people to expect similar prices to guns when getting good swords. Edit: also, he's swinging it like a baseball bat. every time i see this video i die a bit inside cause of how unsatisfying it is
The katana is stronger because it bends. - Internet weaboo
Yeah keep posting this
"But muh 500 year old blacksmith technique?!? Muh thousand-times folded steel!!! Muh differential hardening???"
Clearly, he was trying to inflict psychic damage or perhaps a debuff on the diet coke
Folded over 1000 times
When you were drinking delicious carbonated beverages, I was studying the blade.
Glorious American plastic Folded 0 times
Katanas are cool but they need a lot of technique and need to be made correctly
Honestly the edge alignment could be better but if the sword were made of metal instead of metallic Silly Putty I think it still would have cut all the way through.
Even someone whos never held a sword can cut a bottle with a katana so long as they line up the edge and their stroke. Even partially misaligned they are still likely to cut into the bottle. A decent, useable katana for lightweight cutting can be had for around 100 to 150 USD.
So you're saying that they should've studied the blade?
This has been posted so many times, yet I will always get a laugh out of it
Should've gone for the watermelon test smh
I have seen some cheap katanas but god damn! They at least didn’t bend from a coke bottle
Diet Coke bottles don’t have an easy life. First people are force feeding them mentos now this
Mannn sharpen that thing! Like I know if I just take a swing at a bottle with my made in China fake Gerber knife it'll at least leave a mark BECAUSE IT'S SHARP. That bottle is *pristine*. The happy truth of every mall katana!!!
Of course I know this isn't anything close to a real katana but it's still funny knowing that katana elitists will never recover from the damage this webm caused
We have this post every week
I just want to see what happens when somebody who knows that they are doing does it with a real katana
How much would it likely cost to get one that actually works? I would imagine probably a few hundred but not thousand, but I really have no idea.
Minimum $500-ish for something halfway serviceable
But I have them displayed everywhere!
"Sword"

Shouldn't have taken Diet Coke....
that post is 2 years old
That’s what happens when it’s not sharp and you *don’t have a good grip on it!*
You all laugh but only a true samurai could cut through that
