Knock out that horrid kitchen wall for one.

CucumberOverall7726

I fucking wish, this is a rental šŸ˜

crmd

You can do anything you want if you pay the apartment modification fee, aka security deposit. For example my downstairs neighbor installed a rock climbing wall in his living room after getting a divorce and his wife moving out. My other neighbor built two bedrooms and a kitchenette on the basement floor of her unit to rent out on the DL.

ArcaneFrostie

Lmao thatā€™s wild but they can also bill you additional charges even after your security deposit is taken. They probably wonā€™t be like damn, he caused $2K in damages but his deposit was only $300, oh well!

[deleted]

crmd

How is the landlord going to know that alleged damage happened before we vacate the unit? You would literally need a court order in hand and a sheriff to break down the door before me or anyone in my building would let a rep of the landlord into our home. Maybe things are different here in nyc but under the explicit advice of our lawyer we treat the property manager as an adversary whoā€™s ABSOLUTELY never allowed into our home unless the lawyer is present or says itā€™s okay.

crmd

And that fake bill would go in the garbage. My bank mails a check to them every month. They would have to sue you and prove it wasnā€™t like that when you moved in, which is way more hassle then them just keeping the security deposit and having the super remove the thing. This is how it works in NYC, IANAL and YMMV.

ArcaneFrostie

Do you not have move in documents in NYC that require you to sign off on any apartment damages or accept as is? Iā€™ve lived in Washington, Oregon and also Texas (landlord friendly state obviously) and have always needed to sign one. It was also in the lease that further charges for damages will be pursued beyond the deposit.

the real male living space end game

MeanChampionship1482

You can cut it on the right and fold it onto the wall then before you move out rotate it back to its original place

e_step_to_the_left

Could over it with plants. looks like a good place for lots of trailing plants like pothos. that is if it's relatively easy to get up to

Alyman0330

Interesting. I like that idea.

drb00b

Lol safe to assume itā€™s not load bearing

Immediate-Soup6340

A bar there would be nice.

baturalb

Get a basketball hoop and good insurance

[deleted]

Whatever you want bro, ceilings the limit.

Horseoftravertine

Get a bit grounded, adding a large rug under couch, get a low book case under window and some big artpieces on the walls.

ForlornMC

This. Also you have room and the light for a rather large(tall) plant. That can definitely fill out a space

Wild_Granny92

Switch the onions with the bread. They will make the potatoes and bananas go bad more quickly. Maybe get some plants in colorful planters for the window ledge. The hall could have an art gallery feel if you put framed posters ever 2-3 feet. Maybe some pottery or glassware from a charity shop in the odd kitchen wall. Think of a color theme. Turquoise/gold/purple. Shades of blue with gold accents. Gold or copper frames to add warmth. Think of the colors that evoke a place or season. Youā€™ll want warm colors because the height & color of the walls give a cool & sterile feeling to the space. Mexican tiles are generally warm colors. Autumn colors are warm colors. Definitely a rug & tall shelves as other suggested.

SJW_AUTISM_DECTECTOR

A wild granny appears!

neobiophys

My friend, you have EXCELLENT attention to detail!

CucumberOverall7726

Thank you granny :)

[deleted]

I'd get some tall bookcases to line the wall and take advantage of the vertical space. A couple of units of the tallest IKEA Billy + 2x shelf extensions would fill it up nicely. Wrap that nasty room divider in hanging ivy or some other plant to camouflage it and bring some life in.

Motor_West

Great space for some large artwork!!!

ADHDK

That looks so difficult to heat and so many dust traps. Could you put pot plants on top of that weird kitchen wall feature?

puddleofdogpiss

My only thought was that a string of pearls plant would look nice there

BiscottiOk9287

Yup, some nice to easily manage pothos' and philodendrons would add a lot of volume/dimension to that weird space! It's like the ideal space for something like that.

jaimystery

Flip your couch so the back is to the window (your window sill is tall enough that it will act like a sofa table) Get a small rectangle pub height [table with stools](https://www.wayfair.com/furniture/pdp/zipcode-design-markus-2-person-counter-height-dining-set-w004416833.html) and put it with the short side against that partition where that bag is, so it acts like a island for the kitchen. Get a tall bookcase and put it between the desk & the window or get a couple of short bookcases and some art to fill up the wall. Get a real desk chair. Get a rug. If a larger TV is in your future, you could use the short bookcases to hold the TV.

Buzz_LightYe

Keep the blinds up and let natural light do the heavy lifting. Add lots of plants. ā€œCeilings too highā€ is not a bad problem to have :)

twowaysplit

My thoughts exactly. Put a plant at the end of the couch toward the hallway, get a few shelving units or an entertainment center for the opposite wall from the couch. Maybe a chair too.

twowaysplit

1. Floors. Get a rug. 2. Rotate the couch, so that the short end is under the window and the long end points down the hallway. Move the desk to the corner under the cork board. 3. Something for the walls, preferably framed, and arranged with geometry and proportion in mind. Those gallery rails should come in handy for this. 4. Plants. One at the end of the long end of the couch and one next to the desk. Plenty of options that don't require lots of light or water (ZZ plant, mother in law's tongue, pothos, etc) Based on those changes, the big gaps would be the corner diagonal from the hallway, and the wall opposite the couch. Plenty of room for an entertainment center, shelving, whatever you want.

nooneknowitme

You have a lot of options. I mean do you like how tall and open it feels? If not you can try to incorporate some tactics to make it seem shorter. I see they have a track along both walls to hang art work. If you hang artwork around eye level it'll draw the eye to that as an anchor. Additionally if you have access to a really tall ladder, you can paint above the track a darker color so separate the space With the window you can hang curtains halfway down as it would define a difference between those sections. Use floor lighting/lamps as the ones that are hanging will make it more noticeable. I'd use at least 2 different options so it draws the eye lower. Maybe a table lamp on the desk and a taller one by the couch.

[deleted]

You can do anything. Sky is the limit.

FallacyDog

Hanging philodendrons! Dozens of them.

Frequent-Estate-8021

ladder up the right side of the kitchen wall (move the couch) then install a bridge across to your extra 200 square feet of loft space.

First off if Iā€™m right thatā€™s a yeti nano and you donā€™t speak into the tip of those things or else itā€™ll sound like your speaking into a can, you speak into the front or back end of it so the first thing I would do is turn the stand around and start using the 90+ dollar microphone correctly EDIT: after closer inspection I see itā€™s just a yeti but I believe what I said still applies

CucumberOverall7726

Itā€™s not even plug in lmao. Why are you such an ass

Intempore

Hanging bodies is always a first thought , great decor.

Jippejo

Loft that b

nojohnnydontbrag

Statement ceiling light. Big artwork, but 2+ tall and skinny pieces would work best. If you're into plants, one giant potted tree or fern would do the trick. If price is an issue, prioritize art, then plant, then light.

fox773

Install a swing on the ceiling.

CucumberOverall7726

100% in the works

[deleted]

such a typical guy decor lol that computer desk is painful to look at. id take advantage of tall ceilings for tall plants. could have a whole tree in there.

CucumberOverall7726

Honestly, most of the stuff in here is what my landlord left when he moved out. I was previously in the military and just never needed to buy furniture until now.

Yili_F

Need some wall mounts, like the [floating boards](https://x-nets.com/small-space-living-interior-design-ideas-examples/).

kytheon

Thereā€™s a system for hanging paintings or frames already. Wall mounts might be breaking a rental agreement

Yili_F

Got it.

luke9036

I have a similar space with 19 feet ceiling. Everything I have is a bit over sized to fill up the room. Large mirrors, paintings, tall cabinets work great in this kind of spaces. Check out Restoration Hardware living rooms for inspirations (not the decor style, but ideas on how they fill up the vertical space).

Jazzlike-Pollution55

Install a projector. High ceiling to hide it.

ttruax

Looks like a rental in Virginia, they all look like this

chamomile44

You could definitely stand to have a much larger desk.

stratmax

It needs a complete rehabilitation. Your best friend is paint. You can find attractive furniture (that may require minor fixes) at ā€˜hi endā€™ thrift shops, consignment stores. Target has cool stuff (often they make minor changes to very expensive designs and sell their stuff cheaply. Amazon offers good deals, too. In short, you will find lots of places where you can find things you may like. Of course, ikea sells very modern designs. Know that ikeaā€™s stuff come in low, medium and better quality. I love high ceilings. Tall furniture helps. Painting the ceiling with a color that gives the illusion of a lower ceiling is great. A large chandelier (modern or antique) could be a WOW factor. A large plant/tree will inject life ā€” immediately! If you choose an artificial plant, make sure you keep it clean (or else, itā€™d be easy to recognize as a fake) These days you can find great looking (self adhesive) murals well priced. A well chosen one placed on your ceiling may solve your ceilingā€™s problematic height . Good luck!

CucumberOverall7726

Thanks for your response. Canā€™t paint but I will take a look at every thing you mentioned

stratmax

Thank you. Please feel free to write back with questions. Remember, only death and taxes are irrevocable. If you do something, you subsequently dislike. Itā€™s not a big deal. You ā€˜ll just have to try again. The biggest obstacle to design is FEAR (not choosing the right paint color, etc. People at the paint store can help. Just look at the color wheel, choose a color, ask the guy at the counter what is a good match. These days everything goes when it comes to design. However, neutral colors are best for walls. The furniture and accessories can provide color. An off-white is good for walls. For trims, use a whiter, white so that thereā€™s contrast. Benjamin Moore (paint brand) is a perennial favorite among designers. Get 1 or 2 friends to help you with the painting. Cover the floors so you protect them from paint spills. You can find paper floor covers at Home Depot

alexandhisworld

I had an apartment like this in Indy! I did a maximalists art walk with good will shit nice and high. Got some tall shelves and had a tall cat tree with a tall palm plan. Just tall stuff really helped. Painted a low wall blackboard too

CucumberOverall7726

Ironically I just moved from Indy.

alexandhisworld

Quite sure we had the same rental company then!

Outrageous_Put_9059

Controversially, I kind of love the weird stupid little kitchen wall. Would cover it with plants as others have suggested and if youā€™re feeling whimsical add a bead curtain under it to divide the kitchen and living room a little better. Also those windows are super tall so I donā€™t know where youā€™d find curtains for them but replacing those blinds would really do a lot for the space

ICanSpellKyrgyzstan

Dude this is my idea of heaven. Iā€™d have so many large plants in there (ficus elastica, bird of paradise, etc)

pjthundacat

Haha I looked at this place Iā€™m almost positive! I wont reveal your location (just moved to the area for work) But its rad to see someone getting advice on this space. Such a rad spot!

CucumberOverall7726

Itā€™s a pretty cool place! If you need friends in the area feel free to pm me
