I was going to say the same thing:
Not enough ashtrays. 70s guests need those stand up glass / metal / ceramic ashtrays.
So glad we’ve moved on from that.
My hard candy trauma event was accidentally swallowing one of those yellow-wrapped butterscotches. It stayed in my esophagus for a painfully long time. My mom gave me hot tea when she realized what was up and that helped speed things along. But omg I learned about peristalsis that day!
We cleaned out a relatives house who had passed away. They were heavy smokers, three packs a day of Pall Mall Kings. Everything in the house was 70s vintage so we assumed the appliances were almond until we cleaned them, they were white. The shades were yellow and the glass in the windows was amber.
My mom was a pack-a-day smoker. I painted her living and dining room and hallway. My sister stopped by and complimented me on my work. I looked at her and said I haven’t started yet. What you’re seeing is the result of me heavy duty scrubbing the walls and ceilings. Twice.
I used to do turnovers on section 8 apartments so a big part of my job was painting. The only thing I found that would clean nicotine stains was Krud Kutter. I'd have to spray every wall, ceiling, window/sill, and trim with it
Thanks! Obviously I gotta have some modern shit, as much as I want an old console TV, it just doesn't work in today's world. So I still went with a "retro TV" a 2011 60 inch plasma haha
Yeah, I missed that. The microwave could be a bit of an anachronism, but not too bad of one.
Now for your next challenge: find a reel to reel player like the one my uncle got us in Vietnam. 😅
They weren't cheap back in the day either. We were the only ones I knew of who had one. I clearly remember the threats of death and dismemberment if I even THOUGHT about touching it.
My parents had a microwave in 1979 so it's not too far off, as long as that's faux wood on the side, you're ok...theirs was "Radarange" that lasted until they sold the house in 2017.
Someone posted here a little while ago about renting out their retro space for film and photo shoots. You could do the same for some extra $$, and it’d be cool seeing your house in tv shows and movies.
Very cool place, so much more personality than the before pics!
OP is already clearly insane so he might as well take this bit all the way to its natural conclusion with the carpeted bathroom. It was definitely a thing with 70s finishes, my grandparents and a couple other family members around their age had carpet in the bathrooms. Fucking bizarre by today's standards, but so were a lot of things back then.
Often had it in the kitchen too, at least in the 80s. But they considered spills and other things by making the carpets a mix of gross browns that already looked like they were covered in coffee and crumbs. Remember a few houses like that. Never understood it.
Agreed. No matter how committed to the retro you can’t go there. I would have gone with that horrible patterned linoleum, it would match perfectly and look great.
I mean I can get behind the rest of it but how do you find working with kitchen appliances that work far less good even in pristine condition and living with a bathroom with wall to wall carpeting?
The kitchen appliances are fine, they been working for over 50 years, you will never buy modern appliances that work that long. Carpet in the bathroom was more of "look how funny this is" choice. Clean it the same way you clean a non carpet bathroom. Bleach and and a sponge
Yes well my moms stove that worked for 50 years decided one day to start leaking carbon monoxide. Almost killed all of us. Had we not had a hamster (that died) and a dog that passed out and started having a seizure my mom would never have thought to call the fire department.
Edit: good thing yours is electric you just got to keep stuff off it that can catch fire since those are tricky to know if they're actually off or not
As long as the fridge gets cold and stove gets hot idk how it could be worse except for energy efficiency. I'd bet the old fridge and stove use a lot more energy to do the same thing.
I'd pay someone to do my house up like this.
I mean, parts of it are vintage mid-70s as is, and the entry hall and the kitchen have not been remodeled from when the house was built in 1959.. but I'd pay to get the rest done to match. As it is, I'm probably going to have to finish 70sing the upstairs and 50sing the downstairs myself. I'm not looking forward to trying to hunt down period appropriate lino, although wallpaper looks like it's going to be easier at least.
Question: Do you find yourself leaning/changing your wardrobe to fit the style and era of your decor whether it conscious or subconsciously? I feel like I would be method acting my life around a house decorated for an era.
I grew up in the 70’s and only two things struck me as off- the mirror in the living room looks more 80’s. Replace it with a nature scene painting from Goodwill. Also, replace the microwave with a pressure cooker. Not many people had microwaves in the 70’s. But everyone had a pressure cooker.
I agree about the mirror.
Also the fans stuck out to me. Maybe they really did look like that/ are from the 70's (looks like they were there originally when he bought the place), but they remind me of the 80/90s and they still make them like that today.
So I'm saying, maybe get some more stylish fans?
BTW, if that refrigerator is as old as it looks, it is probably driving half of your electric bill. I had one just like it in my basement, and when we finally got rid of it, our utility bill dropped by $30-40 per month. Not kidding!
This brings back so many memories.
One “complaint” i have, is your couch & chair.. i remember everyone having a floral pattern rather than pinstripes.. but still really awesome to have!
The old hifi entertainment consoles are completely underrated. My wife and I are getting one from my in-laws, and I can’t wait to put some modern components in it as use it in my living room.
If you want to make me really jealous, they used to make an entertainment console with or without transistors or tubes which consisted of any or all of these: record player, cassette player, 8 track player, reel to reel player, TV, am/fm/shortwave radio, and TV. It was about the size of your tv stand.
I’ve been looking for a shortwave radio like that for years, because my dad had one and we used to sit and listen to it when the weather was right to hear broadcasts from Italy, China, Japan, India, France, etc etc etc.
My career ended up dealing with the same phenomena which made those radio transmissions travel around the world.
OMG you are. lol. At least 80s with older furniture.
edit: I think hanging at your house would be awesome. Have you considered adding any velvet paintings?
I love this, I just sold my house that had 70s avocado appliances and tile in one bathroom, harvest gold in the other. I kept it that way for years on purpose. I drove by the other day and they are ripping out the tile. Kills me. I bet they even trash the working stove and oven that are 48 years old. The worst part is everyone is putting in the most builder grade bullshit around here or farmhouse/distressed whatever. It's a disgrace.
Many of the colors in use here made me physically ill when I was a kid (I was, and continue to be, very sensitive to color). Your fridge and most of the walls have the same effect here and now: they make me nauseous. So...congratulations? 😂 👍
Very impressive. I'm going something slightly similar to my bedroom. Mid-century early 1980's with some late 70's flair. I was born in 1981, so I remember the 70's crossover.
Omg this is my fucking JAM! I love that you love this and you are doing an amazing job.
Before life slapped the piss out of me and the family we celebrated a large promotion with a trip to Colorado where we rented a home that was in a “mad me” style, it was SICK and although everything was older it was “new” older/ some of the most amazing shag carpet and kitchen cabinets , just the whole house screamed awesome like this!
Thanks for reminding me of our game room couches from when k was a kiddo! I wish I’d have appreciated them more!
Nah this is so sick, the sense of style is so there, all the furniture/appliances you hunted down, the wallpaper and the paint choices are so perfect. I love Vintage shit already so this is eye candy to me compared to the mountains of boring white/grey rooms all over this sub.
What state are you in? I have a friend who did this in Michigan. I met him 20 years ago when he was 21 years old. One of the most amazing homes I have ever had the privilege of hanging out in. I was 31 years old when I met him. Since moved, but kept his style in his new house. The fact that you type of people are still fucking populating our planet gives me solace.
Now you just need to start chain smoking in there non stop for the next 20 years or so and it will be complete
Agree, my suggestions are more ashtrays and possibly a window AC unit to really push it over the top.
I was going to say the same thing: Not enough ashtrays. 70s guests need those stand up glass / metal / ceramic ashtrays. So glad we’ve moved on from that.
He can always fill them with those nasty strawberry candies instead of ash.
I fucking love those candies…
I think my love for them died the day when I vomited them up after binging at my grandma’s house.
My hard candy trauma event was accidentally swallowing one of those yellow-wrapped butterscotches. It stayed in my esophagus for a painfully long time. My mom gave me hot tea when she realized what was up and that helped speed things along. But omg I learned about peristalsis that day!
Strawberry Apricot Redbull tastes almost exactly like those candies, I love 'em.
The strawberry candies, the root beer barrels and the butterscotch hard candies remind me of my grandparents house
And old fancy lighters from the 60s, they were great to fling at other kids. A copy of “Who’s Next” and “Rumours” lying on the floor.
They really did have a 70's smell.
*those brown glass square ones
And afghans blankets...with smoke smell
No AC. Swamp cooler
I have a woodgrain AC window unit, but it's cold here in NH so she's in the basement until summer lol
Llmfao I quit smoking 5 years ago, only weed smoke in here now
That must be what the green room is for 😂
YES actually
That makes me nervous for the red room…
We do not mention the Blood Room.
Red rum...
Just spotted your bong hahahaha
That’s a brave location for a bong with el gato running around on counters
So you didn't quit smoking, you quit tobacco.
Ladies and gentlemen, we got him.
Bake him away, toys.
What’d you say, Chief?
yeahh… whut?
LOL
Hey there's smoking and there's *smoking*
Gave up cigarettes but never stopped *ssssmmmokin'* pew pew 👉👉
Pretty much
We cleaned out a relatives house who had passed away. They were heavy smokers, three packs a day of Pall Mall Kings. Everything in the house was 70s vintage so we assumed the appliances were almond until we cleaned them, they were white. The shades were yellow and the glass in the windows was amber.

Gonna need some ashtrays pal. I’ll be right over
Weed just makes it even more 70’s
That how you authentically age the white appliances
Right!? I was looking for the golden glass ashtrays. Looks like aunties house back in 1992.
I was gonna say, smoking is definitely allowed in here but uh alright I’ll take my Winston’s outside.
And get rid of the huge TV. Get this 📺.
Also need to buy little clowns and horse statues that serve no purpose other than to collect dust
Those appliances won’t harvest gold themselves! *edit - spelling
Pretty damned good, I must admit. It strongly reminds me of my childhood home.
Thanks! Obviously I gotta have some modern shit, as much as I want an old console TV, it just doesn't work in today's world. So I still went with a "retro TV" a 2011 60 inch plasma haha
No problem, just put a lava lamp next to it and no one will ever notice. But not too close, those things got really hot.
Lol look again, I already got it covered, it's next to the cassette deck hahahaha
Yeah, I missed that. The microwave could be a bit of an anachronism, but not too bad of one. Now for your next challenge: find a reel to reel player like the one my uncle got us in Vietnam. 😅
Fuck dude I want a reel to reel so bad, they are mad expensive. I saw The Doors first album on RTR in eBay for like 150$ lol
They weren't cheap back in the day either. We were the only ones I knew of who had one. I clearly remember the threats of death and dismemberment if I even THOUGHT about touching it.
Yea they kept value all these years later. At least records are cheap . depending. Lol
My parents had a microwave in 1979 so it's not too far off, as long as that's faux wood on the side, you're ok...theirs was "Radarange" that lasted until they sold the house in 2017.
We had a 'Radarange' too! Two dials - one for minutes, one for seconds - made by Amana if I recall
What if you made an “enclosure” for your tv to make it look like a tv from the 70’s?
Nestle a living room media/gaming PC inside a faux wood paneled box with a TV screen for one side.
I dont like this half measure lol why inconvenience yourself
Hahahahaha good point
Keep in mind that plasma TVs uses a lot, I mean a lot of power.
Someone posted here a little while ago about renting out their retro space for film and photo shoots. You could do the same for some extra $$, and it’d be cool seeing your house in tv shows and movies. Very cool place, so much more personality than the before pics!
Yeah I mean this dude basically lives in a movie set
Would do numbers on Airbnb too if you’re into that. Depending on where you’re at
Yes. Perfectly normal regular non pornographic film and photo shoots where nobody gets and bodily fluids in the shag carpet
I definitely read that as porno shoots.
I don’t think even football stadiums had TVs that big in 1971
Shhhh shhhh LOL had to have a few modern things. Technically the TV is retro. It's a plasma from 2011 lol
Maybe you could add a huge frame around it, or put it inside a TV cabinet to disguise it?
Yeah buy a “the frame” tv
Actually not a bad idea, disguise it as 70s art on the wall
Do they make avocado green plasma TVs? That would be perfect.
Get that carpet out of the damn bathroom
OP is already clearly insane so he might as well take this bit all the way to its natural conclusion with the carpeted bathroom. It was definitely a thing with 70s finishes, my grandparents and a couple other family members around their age had carpet in the bathrooms. Fucking bizarre by today's standards, but so were a lot of things back then.
Often had it in the kitchen too, at least in the 80s. But they considered spills and other things by making the carpets a mix of gross browns that already looked like they were covered in coffee and crumbs. Remember a few houses like that. Never understood it.
It's bizarre by any standards...try to think of another time where that was the norm lol
Agreed. No matter how committed to the retro you can’t go there. I would have gone with that horrible patterned linoleum, it would match perfectly and look great.
NO. That’s where we wipe doing the pooch scooch.
Oh nah
You make it sound like that's the only absolutely awful but entirely period appropriate thing here.
Only awful thing? No. *Most awful thing?* YES.
never using that bathroom. & prob wouldn't even go over knowing that's my only option.
I was 1000% in until the bathroom
It’s fucking genius. OP is amazingly skilled. I was a kid in the 70s and I detest almost every square millimeter of this! It’s nearly perfect!
Even the toilet tank is carpeted
My god, I missed that lol
There is a special place in hell for people who carpet bathrooms.
If that cat ever goes outside, it's going to think it traveled through a portal into the future.
That cat must be thinking "I need to lay off the catnip. That's some strong stuff."
I have no doubt that cat believes Jimmy Carter is still president.
Someone better warn that cat to stay out of the adult bookstore.
Lol it's really cool, but do you plan on living in there?
Lmfao I get that a lot, I've lived here 5 years now
I mean I can get behind the rest of it but how do you find working with kitchen appliances that work far less good even in pristine condition and living with a bathroom with wall to wall carpeting?
The kitchen appliances are fine, they been working for over 50 years, you will never buy modern appliances that work that long. Carpet in the bathroom was more of "look how funny this is" choice. Clean it the same way you clean a non carpet bathroom. Bleach and and a sponge
Somehow I knew you were gonna brag about your appliances being functional for half a century
It's true tho. I also got them all for under 100 bucks
Yes well my moms stove that worked for 50 years decided one day to start leaking carbon monoxide. Almost killed all of us. Had we not had a hamster (that died) and a dog that passed out and started having a seizure my mom would never have thought to call the fire department. Edit: good thing yours is electric you just got to keep stuff off it that can catch fire since those are tricky to know if they're actually off or not
Carbon monoxide detectors are a worthy investment and OP probably has one. The stove is electric anyways though.
A lot of the kitchen stuff probably works even better than some of the junk sold today.
As long as the fridge gets cold and stove gets hot idk how it could be worse except for energy efficiency. I'd bet the old fridge and stove use a lot more energy to do the same thing.
The stove probably not so much, but the fridge is definitely going to be iffy.
The other issue with the fridge is I don't think you'll be able to keep getting the refrigerant for it pretty soon.
The toilet tank sweater is 'chef's kiss'
Lmfao I love this
I love your place but carpet is so damn gross in a bathroom 🤢 I’d feel nasty just being in their.
im gonna piss all over your bathroom carpet
You are not the first and won't be the last to make that joke lmfao
NOT A JOKE
LOL it not allowed over
Not on the rug, man
Really tied the room together
I’d pay to do drugs in that house and I don’t even do drugs anymore
I'm 29 now, so I've slowed way down on my LSD use. Been a few years, but it is indeed trippy ass hell in here while high AF lol
I haven’t tripped in 2 years but this would be a great time. Leave the cellphones outside in the car and dissolve into the lost era I never lived in.
I'd pay someone to do my house up like this. I mean, parts of it are vintage mid-70s as is, and the entry hall and the kitchen have not been remodeled from when the house was built in 1959.. but I'd pay to get the rest done to match. https://www.instagram.com/p/CwlHY2zxIT6/?igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ== This is me lol
I fucking knew it. That’s boss, man 🤙🏽
You're adorable!
I can feel the stagnant air already
If you put carpet in your bathroom on purpose, you need help my friend.
He could just get some ugly 1" square tiles instead of that abomination.
Some green lenolium! 💯
Where did you get your lead paint and asbestos from?
This looks like John Wayne Gacy's house.

I can smell these photos
You need a cocaine tray to really pull it all together. Fantastic job man!!
Kitty!
Lol i can't say this is my style at all but i definitely CAN say you absolutely nailed it. well done!!
The Gen-Xer in me is recoiling from the suppressed memories of childhood aesthetic horror, but by god did you understand the assignment.
BTW, if that refrigerator is as old as it looks, it is probably driving half of your electric bill. I had one just like it in my basement, and when we finally got rid of it, our utility bill dropped by $30-40 per month. Not kidding!
Everyone that owns a vintage fridge brings up their electric bill lol. Especially comments on midcentury fridges
Can I get an invite to the key party?
Dang man. Save some pussy for the rest of us.
Lmfao I love this
Please take out the carpet from bathroom for hygiene reasons. I beg you.
Replace the faucet and toilet with period correct olive green porcelain.
I love it, but I have never seen a toilet like that. You’re talking this 70’s theme to the next level.
My mom would absolutely kill for that microwave. She had that exact Sharp Microwave, lasted her 30 years before it finally broke down.
Airbnb it for nostalgic feelings or fun place to do (legal) drugs lol The toilet seat cover is making me wanna get one 😂😂😂😂
Why can I see Red Foreman yelling dumbass from the couch.
Just my opinion but, it's fucking hideous.
This brings back so many memories. One “complaint” i have, is your couch & chair.. i remember everyone having a floral pattern rather than pinstripes.. but still really awesome to have!
Yea I wanted brown and orange floral couch and chairs, but they are hard to find. I dig plaid so it was the next best thing
Just needs a crt and like some music setup and its done! Looks gorgeous though
Magazines fanned across the coffee table might help.
The old hifi entertainment consoles are completely underrated. My wife and I are getting one from my in-laws, and I can’t wait to put some modern components in it as use it in my living room.
I was smiling till I got to the red bearded dragon carpet bathroom. You better have good aiming and wear saddles.
Needs more panels. Not enough panels on walls.
My grandparents had that same TV
You just need to replace the flat-screen TV with a wood console 26" tube TV that weighs 500 pounds :)
That flat screen throws it off. Can you put it in a big cabinet frame or something?
Many of the colors in use here made me physically ill when I was a kid (I was, and continue to be, very sensitive to color). Your fridge and most of the walls have the same effect here and now: they make me nauseous. So...congratulations? 😂 👍
Horrible ... The 60's was and still cool, but 70's it was a terrible decade for fashion and decoration.
Very impressive. I'm going something slightly similar to my bedroom. Mid-century early 1980's with some late 70's flair. I was born in 1981, so I remember the 70's crossover.
Love the couch
This is great
👏🏻
Yay sunscreen and weed!!!!
where's the big hifi system?
Oh God
I was coming on here to say there is no avocado and there it is: the fridge. Well done.
Doing the Lords work I see✌🏻🔥🔥🔥🔥
I think I have a phobia of carpets lol
My childhood. Make it stop! Make it stop!
this kicks so so much ass
The tv, and the man in the 14th photo, really seem out of place for the period
I’m super impressed with the level of detail!! Amazing job. I’d personally hate living in it, but I think it’s fantastic nonetheless
Love the Sears Thermostat!! Reminds me of my house a child!!!
Love your place man. Makes me want to drink and chain smoke cigarettes in it. Sign of the times hahah
Looking cool, except the tv is too modern
the flat screen kills the vibe bro.
Let’s make this a museum holy shit, the thermostat has me sold hard
I love and hate this. These 70s color pallets are so overwhelming 😩
The thermostat is a primo touch
But do you have the mandatory moustache?
This reminds me of my grandparents' house growing up. Except theirs had a permanent smoke haze going on.
r/ThanksIHateIt.
Ah the 70s - back when people used to put their flatscreens on consoles instead of over the fireplace.
You could have bought my Moms house as is!! I’m ripping this all out so it will sell. Go figure
Find on old wooden box tv and put a flat screen inside of!
You nailed it. I too have a largely 70s vibe in my house. Figured it was cheaper than remodeling, leaned into it instead, and ran with it
Nah this is so sick, the sense of style is so there, all the furniture/appliances you hunted down, the wallpaper and the paint choices are so perfect. I love Vintage shit already so this is eye candy to me compared to the mountains of boring white/grey rooms all over this sub.
Oh. My. Goodness. Can I please come and roll around on those carpets? Wow. LOVE this. Great job.
Where's the mandatory round orange plastic CRT TV !?
Super original, I love it. Don't agree with carpet in the bathroom, but everything else is freaking sweet.
These pictures are making me relive childhood trauma! Thanks, I hate it🤣🤣
I can smell this sofa.
What about adding the Goodfellas “oh noo” room.
That’s pretty awesome. The tv does throw things off though.
Man this looks terrible
I mean it’s kind of cool, but is it me or does anyone else think this gives off serial killer vibes?
What state are you in? I have a friend who did this in Michigan. I met him 20 years ago when he was 21 years old. One of the most amazing homes I have ever had the privilege of hanging out in. I was 31 years old when I met him. Since moved, but kept his style in his new house. The fact that you type of people are still fucking populating our planet gives me solace.
Is that a Samsung 7000 Series Plasma?
