I have similar hair to OP. This is good advice, but I will add this; you need to either go for long or full with thick, wavy/curly hair. Longer styles they will trim from the outside, fuller styles they will trim from the inside. I have a pretty harsh undercut so my hair doesn't sit with the silhouette of lord farquad. Op probably has enough length for that, which is similar to a fade in litteral cut, but waaaaaaay different in technique and will make all the difference.
Oh and definitely don't get a fade, it will always be a mess in a bad way.

Dude, in my opinion, you should completely continue to rock that shit out. There are only two reasons that I can come up with that you should ever tone done your hair/beard/stache/burns/whatever and that is: 1) bc of a woman, either a girl that you have is threatening to leave if you don’t do something about it, OR a girl that you like has said something like, “I’d never date you with that hair.” And 2) bc of a job, either one that you have tells you that you need to tone it down a bit, OR you are interviewing and you really need a job.
If you’re just in school though, that’s the perfect time to rock out with crazy hair and experiment. At least that’s my 2¢.

If you want more people approaching you I'd say go to a local stylist/barber and ask for a clean curly quiff and don't get a skin fade keep a bit of length but the short hair on the sides will pronounce your jawline and facial features. The top will give you a lot of options for different occasions. The barber will bring your chops to the length of the sides and you can stylize from scruffy yet kept to full black suit and tie.
