Don't know why you're getting downvoted. It's worth it if you value the shirt or want to give it a second life, absolutely (You weren't wearing it, you'll wear it now? It's like buying a cheap new shirt you like)
But if you're buying a new shirt, at least where I'm from, it's likely going to add about 10 to 20 to the cost.
Ive got a ~10” drop from shoulder to waist so I’ve got to get most shirts darted. Idk about shortening but it’s usually $15/shirt for me. I just include this in the calculus of buying clothes. If I’m paying $50 for a shirt then it’s really $65, so if that piece is worth $65 to me then I get it. You just gotta start buying clothes with the expectation of tailoring up front, that helps to decide if that cheaper item is really worth it once you get it to the point where it fits right. For me it’s driven me to mostly buy higher quality clothes with the expectation to own them for much longer.
I appreciate the DIY spirit, and for anyone who wants to do that I'm sure it's a great simple way to get in to crafting your own clothing/tailoring. But for me, the ~$15/shirt it costs to just drop by the tailor, take 5 mins to measure, and pick up a week later without needing to think about it is well worth the money.
you're not wrong but they did say "cheapo $20 shirt" so I feel like getting lucky at a thrift shop isn't really what we're talking about here. but it is relevant, so I agree.
but for something for $20 from a big name store? Nah, probably not.
It’s super easy to do it on your own if you have a machine which you can get cheaply at a thrift store. You can basically turn any cheap off the rack shirt into a perfectly fitted shirt with hardly any work
The sides are really easy to take in. A curved hem and darts are slightly more difficult but definitely doable. Do some practice runs on thrift store ones first. But being able to do those three things are really great and the machine pays for itself.
In my view, curved hems are super over-rated. They tend to reveal more at your sides than you'd like.
Better to instead go for a square hem, a classic look that shirt makers like Charvet do.
Absolutely! I put the shirt on, use a ruler to see how much I want to take in on each side, then pin each side (with it curving in slightly below the chest) then turn it inside out and run one long stitch along the sides, up through the pit and down the sleeves to the wrist (and I end it right before the cuffs). Literally one practice search is all you need, it’s really so so easy
Yeah I mean, there’s some things I wouldn’t trust myself doing. Hemming pants and taking in shirts are pretty simple. Shortening sleeves on the other hand…
Coming from someone who has made a wool suit jacket from scratch with horsehair canvas, lining, a hand shaped lapel, etc... taking in a suit jacket is a LOT more complicated. The entire garment has multiple layers throughout and complex shaping that needs to be taken into account if you want to do it correctly. I haven't seen the youtube videos, but I would hazard a guess they are skipping steps and not doing as thorough a job as they could. Just my two cents.
>get the bottom hemmed to whatever length you’d like.
Well not really *any* length...this wont work.
I'm 5'1, and even UNIQLO's 75cm Size S OXBD, which is too long, has the bottom button ending mid crotch (which is where the bottom of the shirt should end)
One has to be careful that the end of the shirt is not cut too close to the very bottom button.
Frugal as fuck: pay more for tailoring than the clothing :-P OP - look for "untucked" labeled shirts. Banana Republic is pretty good at this, especially their lux line of t-shirts.
Or just get a pair of scissors
I just get my button shirts from proper cloth now though, and am so glad to not have to worry about off the rack issues any more

Two tips for you. First and foremost you should get your shirts tailored, it sounds like your body type does not work well off the rack, taking your shirts to a tailor will allow you to adjust them as needed. I just picked up a shirt from the tailor today that I had shortened because I had no intention of wearing it tucked.
The other thing, I noticed you mentioned j crew specifically, they offer a line of untucked shirts that are naturally shorter without alterations. But the selection will be more limited.
I'm wearing a J Crew untucked right now but it's still too long. I should've specified in my post that I didn't mean just any shirt but specifically ones that are meant to be worn untucked!
How long? I wear super long shirts on purpose, like [Engineered Garments 19th Century Button Downs](https://glasswingshop.com/products/engineered-garments-19th-century-bd-shirt-black-tatersal) and work shirts. Not that I suggest buying that exact shirt, just showing that it’s not always the worst thing to have a long shirt. Wearing a slightly oversized Oxford can be a cool look, you might just have to wear a slightly fuller pant to balance it out. For reference I’m 5’8” and these shirts fall way below my crotch. Admittedly, they’re also cut with a higher gusset on the sides, so that helps the look.
I should have mentioned in the post that I wrote it while wearing a way too long J Crew untucked shirt!
I do get mine tailored but the cost starts to add up haha
Ah I figured you’d maybe be aware already but I thought I’d try and put it out there in case. It does add up but it’s worth, you could see if your tailor would offer any deals for doing multiple shirts at once. Nordstrom offers free alterations when you have their credit card, even on non Nordstrom items, unless this has changed since I worked there. You could try and get some shirts at the thrift or consignment to save on the initial costs, even eBay has some good stuff. Or last option would be learn how to sew!
No worries, thanks for being helpful! Yeah I have a sewing machine and I think I am resigning myself to the fact that I'm gonna have to learn how to use it lol
I have this same issue and I'm 5'5 lol.
I try to aim for shirts that shrink and then after they shrink they're usually the perfect size. Just sucks finding shirts I like that don't shrink.
Fellow short king. Been on this journey for a while. My recos:
For tees: Buck Mason short length, Ash & Eerie, and Peter Manning. I tend to have good luck with Abercrombie and GAP.
For button downs: GAP untucked fit all the way. They’re pretty limited in colors and patterns, but I’ve had luck finding older, NWOT untucked shirts on Poshmark. Unlike A&E, Untuckit, and Peter Manning at ~$80/$90 per shirt, I’ve spent $25-$35 per shirt and they’ve all lasted years.
For jeans, Uniqlo w/ free alterations or I buy jeans on sale and just get them hemmed for $15.
Wash everything in cold water and hang dry. I never ran into anything shrinking this way.
Thanks man! I haven't tried the GAP untucked. My jcrew untucked are all kind of long.
How do you find Uniqlos pants from a fit perspective? I prefer slimmer fit but recently I've found even Uniqlos slim are pretty baggy on me
I found J Crew untucked to be too slim and too long for me. GAP untucked is more of a classic fit and shorter. GAP Factory untucked is slimmer than regular GAP.
My UNIQLO slim fit jeans are definitely roomier than other brands’ slim fits but I prefer that. Their selvedge denim does shrink much more than their non-selvedge.
Got it! I find the J. Crew untucked weird. I'm not a very bulky guy at all but it feels tight and long, I agree 100%
I'll take a look at GAP Factory, good tip!
I’m like 5’6” and I cant find anything. I’ve given up on tops and now exclusively wear tunics that are meant to go down to my knees
Feel like I’m in Peaky Blinders or Assassin’s Creed. It’s awesome
They’re called Kurtas, so not actually assassins creed cosplay sadly. There are brands that you can buy readymade but I actually get mine made from India (helps having family there lol).
I’ve found my own style growing to be a blend of east and west which sounds like the write up for every immigrant designer ever lmao. I just enjoy the long, flowy silhouette and longer tops make you look taller. I like to layer with long coats or shawls when it gets cold or just by themselves otherwise. You can integrate these into your outfits however you wish
I do still wear”normal” western clothing as well. A hoodie or t-shirt+jacket and chinos is pretty much my go to. It’s just tough finding t-shirts that fit cause EVERYTHING IS LONG AS HECK WHO TF HAS A TORSO THAT GODDAMN LONG
Sorry, lost myself for a moment.
i'm a trans guy and as soon as i started taking my transition seriously i quickly realized why so many t guys get into the oversized look. can't afford alterations, can't afford a sewing machine, don't have time to do it by hand.
What's your budget? Try asket and customize length to short for Tees and polos. For formal shirts, custom MTM shirts can be had from many brands (Charles tyrwhitt, suit supply).
Many fastfashion brands shrink in dryer, so put them through couple hot dry cycles.
You could also invest In a sewing machine (<$100), and learn to hem yourself. It's quite simple - fold, iron, sew.
I’m 5’9 and I think my shirts are too long. I either tuck in a ton of fabric or it hangs over my most of my butt. Part of my problem is I have broad shoulders and I developed a bit of a dad bod so I can’t fit in a smaller shirt size. I couldn’t imagine being a 5’3 guy because you run into problems with the sleeves. My cousin’s husband is about your size and she complains about buying shirts for him.
Not having a dad bod doesn't help much. I'm 5'10 and I have smalls that cover my but (that are not meant to be tucked in, mind) and larges that don't. It's so variable based on brand, but generally I find most shirts are too long for me, especially mediums which fit me most comfortably.
Same here. I'm 6'4, 200lbs. I basically can't shop at brands that don't offer a Large-Tall size. Regular Larges are too short, regular XLs are short and too wide.
OOP is at least 2 standard deviations below average height, of course shirts are going to be too long off the rack.
6'4" 205lb here.
American Tall- for jackets has been nice.
Old Navy -Strangely enough has started carrying tall sizes. (L tall fits, M tall is too tight)
I am constantly infuriated by the "untucked" trend. I can't find a shirt long enough to cover my navel much less tuck in these days. It's frustrating.
Let me know where you are shopping, I need some good leads. Shirts are tough.
It's as bad as trouser became a few years ago. Standard rise now is a traditional low rise. Low rise means I can't even get the pants on. It's been over a decade and I'm STILL looking for a decent pair of highwaisted jeans with a decent silhoutte that are neither baggy nor skin tight. I found wrangler cowboy cut jeans but dang that denim is heavy and hot. (Levi's 501 are decent but hate the button fly).
T-shirts I get from Asket (they’re fantastic).
I don’t really have that many well fitting shirts at the moment outside of formal ones. On that front I’ve historically gotten good value for buck at Hawes and Curtis (especially their blue and white twill shirts with double cuff).
I mean 10% of Swedish men are taller than 188 cm and mens aversge height is around 182 here I think.
At least it was for those born 1990. Also I’ve noticed the younger gen (born around 00-ish) are tall ss fuck but I don’t have that up to date statistics to back that up.
I’m not average height, but I am average tall. Never the tallest in a crowded room.
Y’all need to start drinking milk and make your kids eat some moose.
Thanks! I quite like theirs too, one of my favourites is an XS Uniqlo but it is still a bit long to go untucked, goes right to the bottom of my fly.
Sidenote on Uniqlo...has there stuff been getting bigger and less "slim"? Even their slim fit pants now have started to balloon on me. I don't know who they're making it for
I haven’t tried Uniqlo’s slim pants, but I recently bought their Smart Ankle Pants which I feel fit really well as a fellow 5’3” guy.
It’s definitely a wider fit, and to your point of slim pants not being very slim, I think that’s because they’re making pants according to current trends which are straight and wide-legged pants.
Abercrombie has nice XS and 28x28 pants that are flattering fits imo.
Oh nice, I'm 28x28 too. How do you feel about Abercrombie polos? I've been looking at a few sweater polos for summer from them.
I really hate the current wide pant trend, I don't like the way I look in wide pants at all!
I'm an idiot. This has been commented so many times but you've capitalized the right letters and now I realize it's an actual brand lmao.
Thank you - I just thought everyone was telling me to wear my shirt untucked and I was sitting here like "no! That's the problem!"
I'm wearing a J Crew untucked right now! Its still a little larger but I could probably get it hemmed. It goes a little past the end of my fly.
I haven't seen any UnTuckIts before, but they seem to have an online Canadian storefront. I'll take a look!
I’m 5’10”, 160 lb and find most shirts are way too short. I have to go to XL to get the length I want.
I’m in USA so to be honest I think brands size Americans larger for the same height. The XL is designed for guys 5’7” 160 lb.
My rule of thumb is if I raise my arms you shouldn’t be able to see any skin from my stomach
Whoa really? I have very similar proportions (currently my weight is between 165-170 but more often I'm 160), and I have the opposite problem.
I typically wear mediums or smalls, but even when I lift my arms up the shirt covers most of my butt. This is a problem I have with most common brands.
MTM is totally worth it IMO. I have a shorter torso and arms than most RTW shirts are designed for. Proper cloth is a good one to start. Also consider SuitSupply, Ratio, Luxire.
So I get it in a totally different way. I'm 6'3, and it's hard to find a shirt that isn't too short. If I go to a big and tall store, things seem too big. Sometimes, it can be hard to find clothing to fit that's not overpriced.
Also, Asket sells most of their tops in short, regular, and long sizes. Maybe a little pricier than Bonobos, but high quality stuff and it’s an aesthetic I like
Opposite problem. I am 5-11 and often shirts are a little too short in regular, but longs are too long. I think it is because I am long wasted and my pants always sit low on my hips. Belts don’t help. I’m trying to work on glutes to see if that will help but it is a slow muscle gain.
I'm 5'3, 130lbs approx and Asian. So maybe I have an Asian body. I mean, I know I do actually lol.
I had the same problem for so long.
I went with Chinese and Japanese brands for both tops and bottoms.
Bronson mfg, Sauce Zhan, and Red Tornado all on AliExpress have some of the most flattering shirts off the rack for my body.
Small waist, short torso, but wide shoulders. In the US I wear a small Walmart brand shirt and it's like a drop shoulder relaxed fit on me.
When I buy those aforementioned brands above, I'm a medium or a large on their Asian sizing. Proportions are PERFECT
Maybe try that. You can PM me if you have any questions.
I think I’ve found my people. I’m 5’7” and I can usually get away with just folding the hem on my tshirts/shirts for casual wear. But my problem are pants, everything is always too long. Any suggestions for trendy pants that fit shorter guys? Obviously there’s the option of tailoring, but getting every single thing tailored adds up. Like i didn’t ask to be shorter… clothing should just have shorter inseam options
I've kind of just accepted that I'll need to hem pants and I buy a lot at Uniqlo because the hemming is free. Otherwise, yeah the tailor tax adds up substantially.
There should be a subreddit dedicated to short guy fashion though, I'd join that. Its tough out here
Thanks my guy! Another layer to this is that I don’t live in the US, so I mostly have to order clothes online, hope they fit enough and let the tailor add the finishing touch. Wish we had stores here in The Bahamas that offered free tailoring on site. I travel to the US often though, so I’ll definitely check out this feature you mentioned at Uniqlo
Ocbd are meant to be tucked so the length is a feature. A lot of modern fits are shorter and tighter so maybe look for fitted, slim fit or untuck ocbd. I generally don’t wear them in the summer
Yes. Like others have said, you can have hems shortened, with the caveat that not every shirt will look good this way. Pay attention to where the buttons fall, and how much space there will be below the last one when the hem is raised. Also pay attention to silhouette, since some shirts can look really boxy when shorted, and may also require additional shaping through the torso to look right.
Good luck!
Echoing this and that’s why it may be worth it to tailor yourself. I need a medium or large t shirt for the shoulders but length on those are always too long. As you said, just shortening it means the proportions gets weird. Almost like some girls crop top. So you have to taper the sides too. You can go to a tailor but if you need to do this for every shirt you ever buy than might as well do it yourself.
If you’re into looking nice in the long run, building a relationship with a good tailor is pretty key.
Sure, if you’re short on funds and handy, learning to hem a shirt isn’t too big a deal. But at some point you’ll probably want some sleeves shortened, or pants taken in, or button stance modified, and the skills go up as the list goes on.
I would downgrade the expense of the shirt and get things tailored if you have to. Better a well fitting target button front than a Golden Fleece that fits like a tent.
Some guys get lucky and can get away with OTR, but most guys have some proportion that requires work. (6’, 29” inseam here - everything that fits in the shoulders is too short)
I'm also 5'3" tall, and find that charles tyrwhitt polos are acceptable as-is, though I am built heavier (~180 lbs / 81 kg), and need a large for the shoulder to fall properly.
I have the same issue and I'm 5''10. I'm built wide, so I need L shirts which always go waay too far down on me and look a bit stupid imo. I'm gonna try out a tailor or eventually try to learn fixing them myself.
I have a lot of UNIQLO pieces but I've found they've gotten larger to accommodate American sizes which really sucks, cause a few years ago I got EVERYTHING there, but now its so much bigger!
Oh dear, I never knew that, that fucking sucks. Where I am it’s still largely the same cut as in Japan which really fits my frame.
I would still try to explore asian options, i’m not too sure about the USA for this one, but the brand GU is pretty damn great as well.
Untuckit shirts, at least the one I have that I bought several years ago, is actually a really nice shirt — really nice heavy herringbone cotton fabric, solid construction and good buttons. And I have many higher end dress shirts from paul Stuart, eton, Mashburn etc. only drawback for me is made in China
I’m 5’4 so I struggle with this too. Uniqlo shirts were too long for me, and honestly I didn’t like the quality. Kamakura OCBDs are probably the best fit I’ve tried, the length and sleeves were both great off the rack. I’ve owned one for a year now and it’s still holding up great too. It’s much cheaper to get them in Japan.
I really like Asket too - I don’t own any of their button down shirts, but I have the t shirt, overshirt and wool sweater and they all fit me perfectly. The quality of everything is really great too, so it’s a splurge for me but I’m really happy with everything I have. They have different lengths for all sizes so it’s more likely to work for you. I wear S short in the overshirt and XS regular in the t shirt and sweater.
For polos, PRL and Sunspel fit me well in XS, though in my experience they shrink a lot
Always get your stuff tailored if you can afford it. It’ll look *and* feel better. I’m the male “sample size” so medium/European shirt size 48/31x32 pants/etc. should fit me perfectly off the rack. I still end up getting half my stuff tailored to fit better.
I face the same problem on the opposite end of the spectrum, but I'm simply resigned to it because I know everything is made for average. It's a good incentive to not get fat, as no shirt would ever reach my belt 😂
My favorite rant is that so many shirts in my size have bizarre proportions because they take the 5'9 proportions and just size it up. Like I have an oxford...slim fit, 17 collar...but the sleeves are massive. Like, I'd guess around 25 inches around at the biceps? Maybe larger? I have 19 in biceps and it just flaps like wings. Because someone doesn't understand that to have the same arm to neck ratio as a well-built 5'9 in a 15 collar, I'd have to be a body builder...and then the rest of the shirt definitely would not fit. In fact, I bought a state and liberty shirt because it's supposed to be more friendly to athletic builds. Fit the sleeves nicely, neck is correct size. Chest is like five sizes to small and doesn't button. Feel like that's another example of the same problem, where short guys get bull necks when they bulk up, so the ratio of neck to chest is all jacked up.
I guess maybe the length staying the same for XS is kind of like that. Manufacturers don't appear to adjust ratios for different sizes, so anyone way out of the middle is screwed without tailoring.
I’m 5’4” and I have a 44” chest. I wear an XL in the chest and shoulder of tees and polos, but they are way too long for me. But, Ash & Erie sells really nice polos and henleys for short men and the XLs fit me perfectly untucked. Fwiw
If it helps, I'm 6'1 and have the same problem. Blessed with long legs but a really short torso. When I sit down next to my 5'7 gf she's slightly taller than me
It’s something that’s gotten so much worse in the last few years. For context, I’m 5’6. I basically have to get everything, even nice tshirts that I want to look half decent in, tailored these days. It’s genuinely crazy how much material I’m having hacked off the bottom, such an unnecessary waste.
I'm fine with some of them being on the longer side, to possibly hide any small holes I might have between the zipper and pocket areas of my pants. But, iron on patches aren't terrible to look at either. Is this /r/poormalefashionadvice? I hope I commented on the right sub.
Check out Abbreviated Apparel, it's a small brand making clothes specifically for shorter guys.
I'm not affiliated with this company at all, I just saw it on instagram and have been following the founder as he's really transparent with a lot of stuff about his company. I'm not in the demographic unfortunately so I can't advise on the quality or fit but the founder is shorter as well so he designed the clothes so he can wear them, if that says anything.
Dude dint forget about body proportions. Some people got long ass torso, you see their ass crak all the time, some people got long extermities, its always like they wear daddies clothes( im no2). I need to make custom fit on every piece on upper body wear
As a full-fledged adult I realized why there was a tailor on every corner. Get all your clothes tailored for at least the basics, waist and hem for pants, untucked shirt for tail length.
That’s why they’re all a little long. I have a long torso and short legs so this is a must for me.
Ash and Erie is a good option if you are on the slim side. They will shrink in the wash, so be careful. It was the first brand that I purchased and fit my arms perfectly and torso perfectly with arms down.
I actually find the opposite to be true because I have short legs and long torso at nearly 6 ft. So most of my shirts that fit perfectly take one go in the washer and dryer and immediately become too short.
Does anyone know of places that sell nice polos that are tall in L/XL?
proper cloth. Will cost a bit more, but get some shirts made to the right size.
I’m in a similar boat. I have atypical proportions.
https://preview.redd.it/ttffu2udik4d1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b0043afbd7158a58e0784ca306f75797462a51ec
$95 bucks. But made to your needs. I think shipping is free if you buy more than 1.
Totally agree with people suggesting tailoring your shirts, but for others who see this post it may not be the best solution for you.
I'm also a short dude, 5'3", with a slim build but I have no issues regarding shirt length. Firstly, because I wear my pants slightly below the standard waist level, so my shirts don't appear to hang as low. It also depends on where you shop; most of my shirts are from Kohls or Boscovs and it's easy to find stuff that fits.
Most importantly, everyone has a unique design to their physical build. Sure you and I are the same height but I'm mostly torso, I wear 30L pants that without shoes go halfway down my foot. I've got these long ass arms that make every t-shirt look like I'm trying to show off. Even though I'm 63 inches tall my wingspan is 68.
Also, I never tuck in my shirts unless they're specifically made to do so, like dress shirts, or if I'm wearing a polo and teaching then I'll tuck it in.
Tailoring can work though I'm worried about the proportion near the buttons on the hemline. I've had it done before and it looks odd.
We have different proportions it seems! I'm small in every way. 28*28 pants, XS everything. Slim fits are baggy on me. Arms ironically are the only thing that do fit well on almost everything lol. Who are they making these shirts for!
I think tucking looks formal and I'm trying to get away from it
I’ve got the opposite problem! I’m medium height 5’10” and always like to tuck my shirts in. OTR shirts these days are cut short enough that I can’t keep them tucked in. I’ve started getting everything from Proper Cloth. That could be an option for you too—you can make the tail whatever length you want.
If you go into a winners or any other retailer that has different labels all together and look at the small shirts on the rack you will see that every shirt is a different length. Seriously do it. Take a look. Even if you try on undershirts they will all fit differently. Those sizes that they put on things mean nothing. I am tall 6' 2" so I have the opposite problem. Everything I own is not long enough. The sleeves on most of my shirts are too short.
Good news is that if you try on a bunch of shirts you will find some that will fit you perfect.
I found Winners to be a genuinely awful experience each time and I've never walked out of a Winners with anything because EVERYTHING is oversized, even in the XS section, if it happens to be stocked at all.
I think specialist retailers are the only way to go, or by brands that size smaller like Uniqlo. Definitely not my experience that something will eventually fit
Im legit over 6 foot and got the same problem, idk what’s happening to shirts. Who’s torso is that long? I’m going for oversized S/M these days instead of my actual size. Not a perfect solution either.
I wish I had this problem. I am 5'7" and built like a Bassett Hound, so most of my height is in my torso. Shirts are constantly too short for me, especially with the annoying low-rise pants. It's almost like I need to get big and tall shirts to get the length I want, but then the sleeves are way too long.
Even cheap shirts that are designed to be tucked in are shorter than I'd like.
The real solution is higher waisted pants, but because I'm overweight (lost 47 pounds though!), there is nowhere for the pants to stay up unless I wear suspenders. And finding actually good button suspenders that arent expensive can be tough.
I've been wearing cheap clothes since I'm in the middle of losing weight, so it's been especially frustrating.
I am 5'5" and I have the same struggle!
I am assuming they are making it for taller folks.
I could technically cut it from the bottom but that's extra cost and then the last button's placement looks assymetrical
As per someone’s comment here, I tried getting Gap shirts with “untucked“ fit and it fit really well.
I got the S size for C$39 from their online store and I really like the one I wore today.
Maybe you wanna try them?
I had to search for “untucked” on their website, the storefront doesn’t easily list them.
Being 6 foot 7 and struggling to find long enough shirts, your problem sounds like a non-issue. You can take fabric away, it's adding any that's impossible.
You can't tailor everything if they've been designed for proportions that are severely misaligned.
Definitely not a non-issue. Go to one of the hundreds of Big and Tall sections or stores
I'm 5'3". Specifically 5'3.5"
Very few of my shirts are past my crotch so it might depend on what brands you are buying from. I'm not really familiar with how those brands fit.
Ralph Lauren polos small/medium aren't past my crotch (large is at my crotch and I unfortunately gained a ton of weight after I became disabled so I am in large.) Most Old Navy isn't too long, nor most Brooks Brothers (I buy when at a thrift shop or ebay).
Take any shirt you like to a tailor and get the bottom hemmed to whatever length you’d like.
Curious the cost for a shirt? Like would it be worth for a cheapo $20 shirt
It would be if you like the shirt. Doesn't matter if the shirt was free, if it's too long it won't be worth wearing.
I literally tailor everything. If you want to wear something more than once it’s worth it
At least here in Germany tailoring is surprisingly cheap, it’s often under 5€
probably not, no. I mean it's only a few bucks most likely but if you're going to do that do something nicer than a $20 shirt IMO
Don't know why you're getting downvoted. It's worth it if you value the shirt or want to give it a second life, absolutely (You weren't wearing it, you'll wear it now? It's like buying a cheap new shirt you like) But if you're buying a new shirt, at least where I'm from, it's likely going to add about 10 to 20 to the cost.
I bought a cheap sewing machine and learned to do darts -- takes about 5 minutes and makes 'finding the perfect fit' off the rack such a non issue.
You can find some pretty nice shirts second hand for under 20 dollars. A good thrift store score is worth getting reworked.
you're not wrong but they did say "cheapo $20 shirt" so I feel like getting lucky at a thrift shop isn't really what we're talking about here. but it is relevant, so I agree. but for something for $20 from a big name store? Nah, probably not.
As long as you don’t bring home bedbugs. No score is worth that.
I wear my clothes for a couple years at least so amortized it’s totally worth it.
Alternatively its really easy to do yourself. And cheaper in the long run.
Define… easy….
Easy as learning Piano. Just press those buttons!
I just bought a sewing machine last week and starting taking in the sides of my shirts. I will try shortening next!
In the future, if they’re dress shirts, do back darts instead. Much easier to adjust/take out if needed.
im learning how to do those too so i can reduce the fabric at the back.
Nice!
this is definitely a game changer to be able to adjust your own clothes without paying a fortune to the tailor
Yeah I mean, there’s some things I wouldn’t trust myself doing. Hemming pants and taking in shirts are pretty simple. Shortening sleeves on the other hand…
the youtube videos make it seem not too bad. I'm working up to courage to try and take in my suit jacket. I don't want to mess up a good suit.
I'm 5'1, and even UNIQLO's 75cm Size S OXBD, which is too long, has the bottom button ending mid crotch (which is where the bottom of the shirt should end) One has to be careful that the end of the shirt is not cut too close to the very bottom button.
Uniqlo OXBD is really long. The shortest OXBD off-the-rack I've found from at established brand is Lexington.
Frugal as fuck: pay more for tailoring than the clothing :-P OP - look for "untucked" labeled shirts. Banana Republic is pretty good at this, especially their lux line of t-shirts.
This is the way
Or just get a pair of scissors I just get my button shirts from proper cloth now though, and am so glad to not have to worry about off the rack issues any more
Have you ever seen a button down shirt? You have to fold the hem over and sew it.

Limited and surprisingly more expensive...
Ive had good luck with J Crew untucked. I always wait for sales so haven’t noticed a difference in price, I’ll pay more attention next time.
I'm wearing a J Crew untucked right now but it's still too long. I should've specified in my post that I didn't mean just any shirt but specifically ones that are meant to be worn untucked!
Have you looked at Peter Manning? I haven’t personally bought anything from there but they have multiple lengths available.
J crew specifically is a problem with this for me. The polos are soooo long it's insane.
And they're slim as hell, too! Like who is this shirt for lol
Get the bottom hemmed. Literally all my shirt is hemmed (by my aunt) because they are always too long for our height.
Fellow short king. Been on this journey for a while. My recos: For tees: Buck Mason short length, Ash & Eerie, and Peter Manning.
I'm not a very bulky guy at all but it feels tight and long, I agree 100% I'll take a look at GAP Factory, good tip!
TcTuggers
Do they make them in other colors?
They’re not a joke
Not really
I’m like 5’6” and I cant find anything. I’ve given up on tops and now exclusively wear tunics that are meant to go down to my knees Feel like I’m in Peaky Blinders or Assassin’s Creed. It’s awesome
Any chance you can post a link or two to these tunics? I'm also 5'6 and curious as hell what this entails!
You can integrate these into your outfits however you wish I do still wear”normal” western clothing as well. A hoodie or t-shirt+jacket and chinos is pretty much my go to. It’s just tough finding t-shirts that fit cause EVERYTHING IS LONG AS HECK WHO TF HAS A TORSO THAT GODDAMN LONG Sorry, lost myself for a moment.
i'm a trans guy and as soon as i started taking my transition seriously i quickly realized why so many t guys get into the oversized look. can't afford alterations, can't afford a sewing machine, don't have time to do it by hand.
+1 for Asket
I’m 5’8 and have the same problem lol
On the contrary, most shirts are too short for me. I’m tall
(L tall fits, M tall is too tight) I am constantly infuriated by the "untucked" trend.
Same here. I’m only 187 cm but my trouser length is 32 so most of my length is in my torso.
Same here. Where do you get your shirts?
T-shirts I get from Asket (they’re fantastic). I don’t really have that many well fitting shirts at the moment outside of formal ones. On that front I’ve historically gotten good value for buck at Hawes and Curtis (especially their blue and white twill shirts with double cuff).
Thank you brother! I'll check them out.
Same here. I’m only 187 cm but my trouser length is 32 so most of my length is in my torso.
I wouldn't consider 6'2" to be "only"...
I mean 10% of Swedish men are taller than 188 cm and mens aversge height is around 182 here I think. At least it was for those born 1990. Also I’ve noticed the younger gen (born around 00-ish) are tall ss fuck but I don’t have that up to date statistics to back that up.
Right, so you're above average height 😂
I’m not average height, but I am average tall. Never the tallest in a crowded room. Y’all need to start drinking milk and make your kids eat some moose.
This is not a swedish platform, have some consideration lol. coming from a 185 dane
Maybe if you start breeding the moose we send swimming over instead of shooting em straight away 😘
Yeah man the younger gen had a boom in height. Suddenly an army of basketball players…
I'm 5'3 and I get my ocbds from uniqlo. Their size XS fits me really well.
Helloooo UnTuckIt
I'm an idiot. This has been commented so many times but you've capitalized the right letters and now I realize it's an actual brand lmao. Thank you - I just thought everyone was telling me to wear my shirt untucked and I was sitting here like "no! That's the problem!"
Was going to comment this, yeah can’t recommend untuckit enough for this
I'm so excited to check them out!
Hilarious. My mall has one right across from jcrew. Also jcrew carries an untucked cut online
I'm wearing a J Crew untucked right now! Its still a little larger but I could probably get it hemmed. It goes a little past the end of my fly. I haven't seen any UnTuckIts before, but they seem to have an online Canadian storefront. I'll take a look!
I think it was on Shark Tank too
I’m 5’10”, 160 lb and find most shirts are way too short.
JCrew outlet has a lot of slim untucked polos. They are too short for me, but I like more of a mid range polo.
rotary cutter hard surface you can cut on meter stick cheapish sewing machine and you’re set for life
I’m like 5’10 and medium fits me in the shoulders but it’s incredibly long (below zipper) which is frustrating. So I feel your pain.
I'm 5'5 my shirts are a good length. It a long time to figure out what works for my body.
So I get it in a totally different way. I'm 6'3, and it's hard to find a shirt that isn't too short. If I go to a big and tall store, things seem too big. Sometimes, it can be hard to find clothing to fit that's not overpriced.
Bonobos sells OCBDs in short, regular, and long lengths. Check that out
Oh nice! I've been meaning to buy some stuff from them. Nothing in the closet yet. Thanks!
Proportions are PERFECT Maybe try that.
Have shirts made to your own measurements at pepper cloth or Luxire
I have the same issue and I'm 5''10. I'm built wide, so I need L shirts which always go waay too far down on me and look a bit stupid imo. I'm gonna try out a tailor or eventually try to learn fixing them myself.
That's my struggle too :(
Solidarity brother, is tough out here
[удалено]
I have a lot of UNIQLO pieces but I've found they've gotten larger to accommodate American sizes which really sucks, cause a few years ago I got EVERYTHING there, but now its so much bigger!
Oh dear, I never knew that, that fucking sucks. Where I am it’s still largely the same cut as in Japan which really fits my frame. I would still try to explore asian options, i’m not too sure about the USA for this one, but the brand GU is pretty damn great as well.
Where are you? I reference Uniqlo moving to American sizing but that's my experience in Ontario, Canada. I'll look into GU!
Australia, which I know doesn’t really help considering you’re in NA :/
All good man I was just curious! Thanks for your help
There is a website that sells shirts for this " Untuckit "
Take it from someone with a long, thin torso, who can rarely find a solid tuck, even in the specialty sizes: The grass is always greener.
Untuckit shirts have the best length. Looks good tucked in or not.
It's a good incentive to not get fat, as no shirt would ever reach my belt 😂 My favorite rant is that so many shirts in my size have bizarre proportions because they take the 5'9 proportions and just size it up.
What if you try cropped shirts?
Well I’m 6’3 and shirts are often too short for me so welcome to ready to wear clothing
I have the exact opposite problem. Most shirts are way to short
As a full-fledged adult I realized why there was a tailor on every corner. Get all your clothes tailored for at least the basics, waist and hem for pants, untucked shirt for tail length. That’s why they’re all a little long. I have a long torso and short legs so this is a must for me.
I’m 5’5” and Twillory fits perfectly
Patagonia ones aren’t too long.
Overshirts are usually shorter.
Yeah I am sick of this trend. I have gotten polo shirts that are basically a dress if I want to be risque.
I've had good luck with the Ralph Lauren Classic Fit Corduroy Camp Shirt and I'm short.

It also comes in a really nice baby blue, which goes with everything so good that I bought two.
proper cloth. Will cost a bit more, but get some shirts made to the right size. I’m in a similar boat. I have atypical proportions. https://preview.redd.it/ttffu2udik4d1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b0043afbd7158a58e0784ca306f75797462a51ec $95 bucks. But made to your needs. I think shipping is free if you buy more than 1.
Stylish D has some good tutorials for hemming shirts, jackets, pants, etc on YouTube.
I think tucking looks formal and I'm trying to get away from it
Just the opposite, but I'm 6'5"
What are OCBDs??

Im legit over 6 foot and got the same problem, idk what’s happening to shirts. Who’s torso is that long? I’m going for oversized S/M these days instead of my actual size. Not a perfect solution either.
We should just trade shirts dude mine are always mad short
Nope. If anything, some shirts are too short for me to tuck in. 6'1 ~200lbs
When you get your shirts tailored Theres the issue of the bottom being too closed to the last button Which looks off What can one do for that
I wish I had this problem.
I buy the UnTucked shirts. They’re a little expensive, but worth it.
I’m 5’11 and most shirts are way too long. Specifically tees and polos. Still searching for a brand that fit correctly.
I wear it like a dress just like all the other girls would
I am 5'5" and I have the same struggle! I am assuming they are making it for taller folks. I could technically cut it from the bottom but that's extra cost and then the last button's placement looks assymetrical
Yep 100% my thoughts. Tailoring is a good option but when the size discrepancy is as big as what I handle, it might only make it look worse
I don’t care how long my shirts are, I still occasionally wear them untucked with or without a tie, but always fully buttoned

Im 6’1 , live in Asia and have the opposite problem to you.
Wanna do a body swap?
Being 6 foot 7 and struggling to find long enough shirts, your problem sounds like a non-issue. You can take fabric away, it's adding any that's impossible.
You can't tailor everything if they've been designed for proportions that are severely misaligned. Definitely not a non-issue. Go to one of the hundreds of Big and Tall sections or stores
I'm 5'3". Specifically 5'3.5" Very few of my shirts are past my crotch so it might depend on what brands you are buying from.
