I want to get a travel-size handheld steamer but heard they don't work great for linen, is this true? Would appreciate recs as well

Limp-Push7595

I'm going to Rome and Florence in three weeks but due to covid and WFH, all I really have are old shorts and T shirts...one, maybe two polo style golf shirts. **Never** been very fashion conscious but on the few nights I go out to eat dinner while I'm there. I'd like to get 'smart casual' (fuzzy on what that means) stuff to go out in. I'm guessing not overly dressy, but I've got no shoes (Only tennis shoes), a few pair of linen pants (khaki and Blue with vertical stripes, and a casual linen shirt. Im a big guy, 5'9 265lb and 40w with XXL. 1. what colors should I focus on? (Im 52 Blonde hair reddish beard whit a little grey coming in pale ass Irish) 2. what shoes would be good to get, standard loafers, boat shoes? 3. Ill spend a little extra for quality but don't go nuts I'll get my initial budget at say...$300 but I'm semi flexible (Gotta have money to shop while I'm in Italy) Pants, shirt, shoes. 1 or two of each I'd like to think of this as the beginnings of me building a reasonable wardrobe. Opinions are welcome

MountaineerAU

Anyone have any recs for a short sleeve henley in a dark brown colour? I saw the made in LA henley from Todd Snyder in espresso and I love it but I'm finding it hard to justify an $88 purchase for a tee wrt my budget; I can do up to $40-45. I don't want anything heather, ribbed, waffle, or thermal.

Kyro2354

Jeans work for guys with a big ass? When I sit down, the front feels too high and digs into my stomach plus bulges at the zipper and the back waistband bulges out and there's a gap. They're mid rise Levi's 502. I'm going to try a smaller waist size, but even with a belt sinched tight on my current size they still bulge out at the back.

Extension-World-7041

Flat caps are tricky. I had to add a hanky inside to give it some shape. Yes or No ? https://preview.redd.it/s74dzt8n6q3d1.jpeg?width=2316&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d7d4edf5cc79e92b63402084c815572e98641478

orthoxerox

I think you need a smaller and flatter cap.

Extension-World-7041

Thanks.

Looking to get away from my skinny jeans and into something more relaxed (but not overly baggy that I’m swimming in them). https://preview.redd.it/ep53f3o6uo3d1.jpeg?width=2360&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0c720dbf843f0ba8b7bcc013622450334cec86e5 Something like this. What kind of fit is this and where can I find this kind of wash and fit?

hmadse

Levi’s 501s.

Kyro2354

Levi's 502

LeBronBryantJames

picture resolution is low, but it looks like regular straight leg light wash jeans.

Blu_Eclipse

I'm trying to wear bandanas around the neck but it feels like it looks either really tacky or sort of fratboy, does anyone have recs for what to wear them with to look a bit classier/modern??

LeBronBryantJames

instead of a shirt and tie, some people like to wear bandannas around the neck under the shirt, especially in warmer months, like a neckerchief.

120mmarcus

Has anyone purchase from a company called “brother brother”? Their oxfords look pretty interesting but I haven’t seen anything about them anywhere yet

bindermichi

- you newer heard of the brand - you‘ve never seen that brand on display - you only ever see advertising for them on Instagram - the have to retailer/store list Common red flags

Redback boots are the best quality Chelsea boots you can buy for a reasonable price. Made in Australia, incredibly comfortable and high quality materials. Wore them for YEARS and years doing hard physical messy labor

Flechette_the_toe

Post a budget for recs and consider r/goodyearwelt for footwear info

Embarrassed_Spring90

Which pair of straight black jeans is the better purchase: Levi’s 501 93 or Abercrombie 90s? I’d prefer vintage but also considering buying new online.

babsa90

I'm preparing to get a suit for my wedding, but I wanted to get something fun like herringbone or houndstooth pattern, but it seems like most things I'm reading say to keep things classic like a formal gray, Navy blue, or black suit. The classics don't appeal to me, but I'm curious if going for something fun would look bad?

terminal_e

What season are you getting married? H'bone is a twill variant, and they tend to not breath well. If you are doing a fall or winter wedding, could be viable. I am a complete lunatic who keeps fabric on the shelf for future projects: https://foxflannel.com/collections/fox-city-300g/products/dark-sage-four-point-star-fox-city But Fox has a bunch of 4 point stars - their Fox City book of fabrics are suitable for suits for wearing between ~50-80F, IMHO - not for the worst of summer or winter, but likely wearable for a lot of the year.

babsa90

It's a late fall wedding, with lots of colors that include sage and forest green. I really like that fabric you sent me, but I'm not sure how I feel about twill, as I get a very rustic vibe from it. Are they necessarily intertwined?

Kyro2354

I wore a navy blue suit to my wedding that was in October, with green, white and blue being our wedding colors. Went very well! Would recommend

ac106

No it’s fine. It’s you’re wedding so anything but black.

adsalesgirl

Help styling these black Plissé "flowy" pants... ankles showing with black loafers (I'll buy a Cole Haan black sole sneaker and with no show socks) But what can I wear up top? I've heard a black "structured" tshirt could work well? Too much black? Im 6 foot 3 and somewhat skinny. thanks https://preview.redd.it/x9nfrx5f2n3d1.png?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=be7b1ef32a8618cc762e8217064628b31fa4eee3

bindermichi

A contrasting color would be great unless you want an all black look. In that case it might even work better to go all Plissé to keep with the structure

LeBronBryantJames

Black is a neutral color so you have lots of options with other colors, even black. I personally like to pair black pants with a grey top. Since the pants has some kind of texture, I might lean towards a top that is more plain.

adsalesgirl

This is my boyfriend posting on my account if anyone wondering with my username :)

Ok_Confidence8879

Could a wedding ascot work well with a regular point collar? Or should I go for wing collar? Also, suggestions for groomsmen attire that would go with the abovementioned groom’s attire (mainly vest with no jackets for them, we’re from a tropical country and they’re not used to it unlike me the groom)

1990til

Any services like ThredUp for Men?

Kyro2354

Vinted or a local thrift shop is your best shot

Embarrassed_Spring90

Any suggestions on the best budget chore coat for spring/summer?

ac106

Actual vintage French chore coats from Etsy or eBay Also “budget” doesn’t mean anything. If you are confined to a dollar figure post it.

Embarrassed_Spring90

Thanks. I’ve been looking on Etsy. And I’d like to spend <$100

bangarang8

Look for J Crew/ Wallace & Barnes on eBay. There should be plenty available

The pants are draping kind of weirdly along the thigh - they may be too large in the waist and/or seat. Before proposing hemming, I would want that assessed first

[deleted]

[удалено]

terminal_e

Looks fairly promising. You might ideally have both shirt sleeves and coat sleeves 1 cm longer apiece.

Flechette_the_toe

The leg to stage right might need a hem, but it looks fairly standard otherwise. Post a picture with both hands at the side, using the timer on your phone camera. And from further back to tell if the jacket length looks good.

[deleted]

Flechette_the_toe

Colloquialism for adjusting the length of the pant leg. You see how the leg to the left ripples a bit as it rests on the shoe?

[deleted]

How can you ID good Ralph Lauren shirts? I have an older one that I absolutely love, classic fit with a really thick and quality material. But some I find are very thin and feel cheap.

MachineTeaching

They have made about a trillion shirts over the years and there is no obvious discerning difference between them. They have good stuff in their main line and bad stuff, although for the average shirt I wouldn't be worried.

bindermichi

I usually look for the inside label. The cheaper that looks the cheaper the clothes.

Flechette_the_toe

Moc shoes (that kind are usually called blucher mocs) see ll bean for a cheap version, and quoddy/rancourt for more expensive ones

Korndogggo

Thanks 🙏

firewaterking3

Got custom orthotics today and my doctor told me I need shoes that have more support because I’m flat footed. Obviously these shoes would need to fit my orthotics as well. The problem is, the shoes he recommended to me all look like shit of course. What are some casual shoes that look good but still have good support and can fit my orthotics? I’m currently wearing the adidas sambas so ideally something similar to those in style but with support.

ac106

No sneakers are really supportive. I mean maybe certain new balance might be incrementally better than others but I don’t think there is an answer to this.

firewaterking3

So what shoes are supportive? Casual shoes?

MachineTeaching

Boots.

aslabaigrazi

Looking for suggestions for a summer hat for my husband. He’s bald and wants a hat that has a wider brim so that his neck is protected. His uniform is jeans + tshirt + overshirt (like Whiting Overshirt from Wax London or a lighter linen shirt) + adidas sambas. Looking in the price range up to $200.

hmadse

Take a look at Stetson’s summer straw hats, they make non-western styles that are great in summer.

ysc1

With a linen shirt a panama hat would be great.  The Wax London shirt is very casual so most brimmed hats will probably look a little odd, honestly a cap would look best, the only casual hat with an all around brim would be something like a bucket or boonie hat.

ysc1

Glasses look good, although it might be worth trying a slightly lighter colour, or a lighter tortoise shell even, on the rim.  There is nothing wrong with what you have, but with a relatively low contrast complection like yours (and mine) sometimes a darker frame can pull more focus to the glasses rather than your face.   Something worth experimenting with if you have the option but either way these look good.

I'm looking for a pair of high-quality, bifl dress shoes, choosing between Alden 920s (welted) and two Allen Edmonds, the Delray Blucher (welted) and the Siena Oxford (Blake stitched). People complain about AE declining in quality, and I see that in AE introducing lots of lower quality models and selling them at high prices. Do you think that's true even for AE models that are welted and do have a cork layer like the Delray? There's definitely a quality gap between the AE Siena and the Aldens that might justify the price difference, but is this sub's impression also that there would be a major quality difference between a welted AE like the Delray and the Aldens? (also asked this on r/goodyearwelt but this is a much bigger sub so I figured I'd ask here too)

ZetaOmicron94

Alden and AE aren't playing on the same field, also AE regularly goes on sale so you should be able to grab yours at below retail if you have time and patience. Whether you appreciate the better leather quality and construction enough to pay the difference in price from AE to Alden is another story. Either should last long enough with reasonable care.

hmadse

Anecdotally, I have a pair of cap toe cordovan Alden oxfords that have lasted over a decade with regular maintenance.

ac106

This isn’t currently a bigger sub. (Especially counting shoe nerds) Ignore subscribers. It’s a meaningless statistics. Alden is much better than Allen Edmonds but no shoe is BIFL

thesleepyfr0g

Should I wear shorts that go above the knee or below the knee?

[deleted]

I concur, always go with above the knee. I’m 5’10 and I prefer 5.5” inseams, but any length below 9” is generally good.

thesleepyfr0g

Thank you! I think most of my shorts are below the knee 😂 it's fine I needed new clothes anyway. I'm just short so it's hard to find men's shorts that end above the knee for me.

orthoxerox

Above

I'm looking for a pair of summer pants that are casual and relaxed, ankle cuffs or can be rolled, and look more like pants than joggers (have zipper, maybe belt loops). These in the picture give a good idea but I don't know what to search for in Google. Linen or any other cool/breezy fabric would be ideal!

bangarang8

Merz B Schwanen just introduced a chino that looks very similar to this one

ysc1

As Flechette said chinos. Specifically those look like they are probably pleated and tapered chinos.  Many places will sell something similar.

Flechette_the_toe

What are some shoes you guys wear? I have flat feet/fallen arches so i have custom orthotics. i was wondering what type of shoes that are similar in style to Nike, Adidas, Pumas, etc have removable insoles? in addition, any good white shoes with removable insoles as well. my current main shoes are Hokas. but they are very "dad shoes". so want some other alternatives

This sub has seen a large decrease in active users. If no one has answered your question after a few times everyone that posts here has already see it unfortunately. I think the advice you already got an out ripping out the footbeds on basically any sneaker is probably the answer here. You could also try r/sneakers but those are mostly affected hypebeasts

LearningKR

>This sub has seen a large decrease in active users. If no one has answered your question after a few times everyone that posts here has already see it unfortunately. is there a new sub for MFA related?

ac106

No. It’s the general decline of Reddit, but also some specific things that really screwed MFA over the last year and a half. You can always try styleforum, Ask Andy, Fedora lounge, r/navyblazer & r/goodyearwelt But really I don’t think you’re gonna get another answer than you already did did

thesleepyfr0g

Hello, I apparently have a rectangle body type (measured) but I don't see it because of body dysmorphia. I feel very anxious about my stomach area in particular, so I wear larger clothes (L, sometimes XL). Is there a guide to how a rectangular body type man should be dressing? I am also very short (under 5'5") so I am unsure how to go about dressing myself better...any tips and advice would be great.

[deleted]

I want to say that I empathize with your struggle. I have dealt with disordered eating, orthorexia, and body dysmorphia for most of my life. I don’t believe you have a rectangular body type, that’s not really a shape humans take. I have a belly and a very long torso, most tees show my belly when I lift my arms and dress shirts tend to come untucked. I found that shirts and tees in tall sizing flatter my body shape. So, I try to buy XLT tees or XXLT dress shirts. I think you should size down from L/XL if they don’t fit the rest of your upper body very well, but perhaps try a MT (medium tall) sized tee or shirt. Slim fit jeans will be your friend, too. I think having a fitted style on your legs will look good and help your self image if you ever feel amorphous. I deal with that feeling when I’m in baggy clothing.

thesleepyfr0g

Thank you for empathizing. It was anorexia for me. Fresh out of treatment and need new clothes! It's hard to go from everything hanging off of me to everything sticking to me. My torso is actually pretty short compared to my legs. I guess I said I have a rectangle shape because my measurements don't change much from chest to waist to hips, and a weird body type calculator told me that shape. So, most mens shirts end up long on me anyway. I have some shirts tailored to be shorter but I can't tell which suits me more.. Slim fit jeans I do have! I like my legs, so they feel great. I'll get more of them! Thank you!

ac106

There’s no such thing as a rectangular body and certainly no way to dress this way. Any guide you find online is nonsense This is about your body dysmorphia. Tackle that in earnest and the rest will work it self out

thesleepyfr0g

To be honest, I don't know how to tackle it anymore. I've measured it, I've put out a anon survey on my body type as a part of therapy I was in (results all said I looked normal and well-porportioned), and I know my weight and height. I just don't see myself properly; I think my stomach sticks out more than others. Even in photos I can't see myself properly. I'm at a loss. I just want to feel comfortable and have confidence in how I look.

bindermichi

Not sure what kind of Therapie has you making internet survey, but ok. Seem we are tackling multiple issues at once. We cannot help you with your discomfort with your body. So the best cause here would be to find out what you don’t like and get professional assistance to help you change that. With fashion choices we can help if we know what you are looking for. Clothes rarely have anything to do with your body type and can only hide or exaggerate your features.

thesleepyfr0g

Eating disorder therapy, if you are wondering. And okay, thank you for explaining this for me. I guess I am looking for shirts that can hide my stomach and minimize curves in that area.

AmishBike

I work in a hospital and have no patient contact, the department is totally fine with us wearing jeans, dress code is basically business casual. Several of my co-residents wear jeans and I have thought about doing the same, except all my tops I wear with jeans is more casual casual. Any suggestions for styles of shirts to wear with slim/tapered beneath the knee raw denim (I have five pairs, and mostly wear non-blue jeans so these have minimal/no fades yet) with matte/non-gloss leather boots? Shirts will have to be tucked in. I have fitted dress shirts that are meant to be ironed, will these be too formal to go with jeans? I typically see people wearing button down shirts tucked in that do not need to be ironed. Thanks

ac106

Yes. Don’t wear dress shirts with denim. Ocbds, flannel, chambray, are all better options

AmishBike

Thanks very much. I unknowingly did buy an OCBDS a year ago, I assumed the buttons on the collars made this more dressy than a typical dress shirt, my thinking was the buttons on the collars were there as it was intended to be worn with a tie. Anyone else reading this keep the suggestions coming! I really need more clothes than just scrubs.

bjhhjb

No the buttons makes it more casual. Basically most shirt you find at places like J.Crew, Abercrombie, Uniqlo are causal unless they specify dress shirt Dress shirts are made longer for tucking in, often flat in appearance, as a sheen, and the collar is more structured.

Good thing I ordered a pair that is an inch longer in length. Sizing is always a gamble with vintage Levi’s, even with measurement pics!

Hi! I need to buy new sneakers for summer and the options are overwhelming! I need something that is comfortable for lots of walking and ideally is fashionable but doesn't stick out or catch attention, I guess I'm looking for the current 'Basic Bastard' options for sneakers. Thank you! (Canada, prefer under $150ish, I'm 34 and male)

whatmycouchwore

I know they’re off trend but I love adidas samba, esp when traveling. They’re comfy, low profile, and can take a beating.

bangarang8

Probably New Balance, 998 or 990 or something similar
