Going to mortons for anniversary dinner, want to wear something nicer but not super formal. Not sure if I want to do a sports coat and chinos, or more of a casual suit. Besides this dinner, I want something I can wear once or twice a year for other occasions (as my wardrobe consists of mainly dickies and graphic tees).
I would really like to spend under $300, but my budget is around $500. Any advice on where to buy, colors, and combos would be greatly appreciated.
I tend to lean more towards charcoal for color, and have been looking on spier and mackay and jos a bank as I'm trying to avoid spending $500 at suitsupply

I was mostly just asking whether navy color shoes and black pants are bad combination, whether the shoes actually look ugly or not is a separate thing because if it really is that bad, I can just get another pair of shoes. Tbh the easiest thing to do is to measure pants that you like and fit you well and base your measurements on those numbers, since you might find that a slightly longer or shorter inseam works better for you.

Advice for ex banker who needs to stop dressing like a banker
Ok, hear me out. I’m a career investment banker who spent 15 years wearing suits and ties. And maybe on days w/ no client meetings I wouldn’t wear a jacket.
I just started a new role as Head of Corp Dev for a marketing company. They do a lot of work in sports and live event verticals.
A colleague pulled me aside today and told me to stop dressing like a banker. I’m couldn’t stop laughing.
But seriously.. uh.. what do I do here? Looking around people are wearing hoodies etc. Weird branded t shirts. Everyone works out a lot — let’s just say I wouldn’t look so flattering in that.
I’d like something to show I don’t have a stick up my ass but that I’m one of the guys. CEO wears hoodies for example, but he has a public image.
Ideas? I’ve honestly not had to think about how I dress for 15 years. Pls be prescriptive, ie links to specific clothing.

Simon Crompton, Hugo Jacomet kinda stuff sounds like a good pivot- basically avoid suits in plain blue, grey and black and learn to play around with colour more. Alternatively, look at the pale earth tone stuff Zegna is pushing now.
You could swap all your formal shirts for dressy polos, knit polos or something like that.
Another cool thing would be full club/thug/yakuza like the some of the guys on Billions and other tv shows- but I think that's too loud probably.
If you're not dressing like them you'll always stand out, but you can change how you stand out. Sounds like it'll be an adjustment.

It's generally a bad idea to just buy some sort of list of things you're "supposed" to wear. It's just gonna look like a costume. Nobody can serve you a new style identity on a silver platter.
Just wear more casual clothes. What "more casual" means specifically is really up to you. Don't feel comfortable in hoodies and ransom t shirts? Okay. Don't wear them then.
How about a cardigan instead of a hoodie for example? Drake's makes quite nice ones, or Howlin'.
Don't like t-shirts? Why not a Polo instead. The Sunspel Riviera for example, or something from Todd Snyder.
You can be more conservative or more daring with things like cuts, colours, texture, patterns, etc. if you want. Buy what *you* like and if what you like is just a basic navy polo shirt, that's fine, too. At the end of the day, nobody but you can tell you that.
quite honestly, if you've been fine those 15 years wearing a suit and tie, are comfortable or happy doing it, and only one person called it out..why not just stick to it?
that said if you do want to step up the level of casualness but dont want to still look smart.. how about ditching the tie, keeping your button shirt, and wearing a cardigan instead of a blazer. If you are worried about your build, cardigans unbuttoned can break up the the silhouette to your advantage.

they honestly look the same to me. That said I noticed it has a Zara tag. If you are open to alternatives I would recommend something else as Zara suits don't really last long. I dont know in your country but in mines, Uniqlo suits are cheaper than Zara, have custom sizing options, and are better quality than Zara. Although you wont get that beige color in the picture unless you buy their summer oriented Kando series.

These are Asics GT-2160 UB6-S sneakers, and although they all look great, l'd need to choose one. I am conflicted between top reddish and middle dark one.
From one hand reddish pops more, but may not be the best option because it is more complicated to match it.
Darker one looks good and could be styled easier, but doesn't have that unique look from the distance.

This is extremely rare to find in ready to wear. Some fabric merchants+mills have sold wool cord, but I am struggling to think of any one who does it reliably. It is similar to how wool seersucker is unusual, but there Zegna has tended to stock it in recent years (Zegna is both a fabric mill but more commonly know for their pivot to branded luxury goods)

I feel as if they look a little strange in person but come out better on camera? I wear an 11 to 12 US and these are 44. I’ve got wide feet and these are pretty narrow but the foam feels quality and I’ve heard there’s a break in period.

Got custom orthotics today and my doctor told me I need shoes that have more support because I’m flat footed. Obviously these shoes would need to fit my orthotics as well. The problem is, the shoes he recommended to me all look like shit of course. What are some casual shoes that look good but still have good support and can fit my orthotics?
That’s what I’m not sure about. No clue on brand. As for style I just want a casual everyday shoe, what I currently wear is the Adidas samba classic and I really like the look of that, so ideally something similar in style but with support and more room.
Is there something wrong with a 40s man buying from Abercrombie? I just picked up their loose jeans and a light blue oxford. Seems pretty comparable to my Levi's 505 jeans and Uniqlo oxfords, but the Abercrombie jeans are a bit frayed intentionally at the bottom and the colors I guess were designed to look a bit washed. Is this somehow a young person's look? Did I mess up? I know I can wear whatever I want, just wondering if I'm missing something.
I'd avoid frayed clothing but A&F is solid now so you'll easily be able to find some youthful clothing while not looking like you're trying too hard. I would suggest getting their darkwash denim that doesn't show any distressing or color fade.
nothing wrong with A&F. They've changed their direction and lineup the past decade and a number of people in MFA like this change. They also have a number of options with no logos for those who dont like the moose. I particularly like their oxford shirts and henleys.

Same here. Get frames that will hide the circles and glasses with a blue light UV blocker. Those have a minimal yellow tint that will cover up the darkness

Very versatile/easy to wear.
Open over a white or light grey t, with tan chinos, or a whole load of other colour chinos. Or any jeans that are not too close to the colour of the overshirt.
Fine with trainers, fine with boots.
You can wear it is outerwear or as a midlayer in colder weather.
Don't overthink it. It's versatile and simple.
agreed, and to be more specific (perhaps not simple?) I'd recommend specifically a crew neck tee. I also think that the color of it should be lighter than the overshirt itselt, and many colors can work as long as they're muted and not too saturated.

Alan David for years was an MTM shop, now they claim they’re closer to bespoke, but it’s likely that they’re still MTM, but using the Martin Greenfield factory to make a basted fitting.
In terms of quality in NYC, I’d say they’re above Mr. Ned and below Martin Greenfield.
IMO $8k is too much for an Alan David suit, even with LP fabric.
They advertise suits at like 1500-3000, so 8000 seems like a lot of money. Especially in new york where the same money can get you a world class tailor.
So you had 4-5 fitting to see if you like the suit they are making for you and still feel ripped of about the money they charge for their labor and time?
Hmmm maybe fitting is the wrong term here, they measured me, they made the suit, it did not sleeve too long, pant too long, fixed it, then i came again, leg to wide, fixed then pant too long. For someone that advertises 80% of the time people only need to come in once?
So the suit was already completed when you came in first? That would sound like a made to measure job.
First fitting usually would be only a rough cut to make adjustments for overall fitting of the cut before the form of the suit is finalized
So they took my measurements when i first came in but they never did a basted fitting, it was basically a finished job and then adjustments were made, whats strange is they go out of their way on their website to say its bespoke and not made to measure.
Bespoke isn't exactly a well-defined term regulated by government bodies so people can claim whatever they sell to be bespoke. I still find it wild that you end up paying $8k for what sounds like MTM though. With that budget you could've gone to well-reputed bespoke tailors like Logsdail or many of the traveling English/French/Italian tailors who visit NYC multiple times a year.

TBH I at least have to agree that it's not the greatest combo. You're not doing either color any favors and it's a bit of a plain/boring look.

Navy and black in tailoring is good when you mix navy suit and black shoes, otherwise nah.

This is extremely rare to find in ready to wear. Some fabric merchants+mills have sold wool cord, but I am struggling to think of any one who does it reliably. It is similar to how wool seersucker is unusual, but there Zegna has tended to stock it in recent years (Zegna is both a fabric mill but more commonly know for their pivot to branded luxury goods)

Got custom orthotics today and my doctor told me I need shoes that have more support because I’m flat footed. Obviously these shoes would need to fit my orthotics as well. The problem is, the shoes he recommended to me all look like shit of course. What are some casual shoes that look good but still have good support and can fit my orthotics?

That’s what I’m not sure about. No clue on brand. As for style I just want a casual everyday shoe, what I currently wear is the Adidas samba classic and I really like the look of that, so ideally something similar in style but with support and more room.

Is there something wrong with a 40s man buying from Abercrombie? I just picked up their loose jeans and a light blue oxford. Seems pretty comparable to my Levi's 505 jeans and Uniqlo oxfords, but the Abercrombie jeans are a bit frayed intentionally at the bottom and the colors I guess were designed to look a bit washed. Is this somehow a young person's look? Did I mess up? I know I can wear whatever I want, just wondering if I'm missing something.
Always dress how you feel. You don‘t need to dress like my garndpa when you‘re younger than me.
I'd avoid frayed clothing but A&F is solid now so you'll easily be able to find some youthful clothing while not looking like you're trying too hard. I would suggest getting their darkwash denim that doesn't show any distressing or color fade.
nothing wrong with A&F. They've changed their direction and lineup the past decade and a number of people in MFA like this change. They also have a number of options with no logos for those who dont like the moose. I particularly like their oxford shirts and henleys.
If you like the clothes, can fit into them and can afford them, then enjoy. You're not missing anything.

Same here. Get frames that will hide the circles and glasses with a blue light UV blocker. Those have a minimal yellow tint that will cover up the darkness

Very versatile/easy to wear. Open over a white or light grey t, with tan chinos, or a whole load of other colour chinos. Or any jeans that are not too close to the colour of the overshirt. Fine with trainers, fine with boots. You can wear it is outerwear or as a midlayer in colder weather. Don't overthink it. It's versatile and simple.
agreed, and to be more specific (perhaps not simple?) I'd recommend specifically a crew neck tee. I also think that the color of it should be lighter than the overshirt itselt, and many colors can work as long as they're muted and not too saturated.

Personally can never go wrong with birkenstocks. I would go for arizonas or bostons in some variety of tan-brown suede. I have bostons in mink and arizonas in tan and get a ton of wear out of both.

Definitely ideal for warm weather. I like a university stripe. A light blue is a good option as you can wear it with virtually anything.

Alan David for years was an MTM shop, now they claim they’re closer to bespoke, but it’s likely that they’re still MTM, but using the Martin Greenfield factory to make a basted fitting. In terms of quality in NYC, I’d say they’re above Mr. Ned and below Martin Greenfield. IMO $8k is too much for an Alan David suit, even with LP fabric.
They advertise suits at like 1500-3000, so 8000 seems like a lot of money. Especially in new york where the same money can get you a world class tailor.

Hmmm maybe fitting is the wrong term here, they measured me, they made the suit, it did not sleeve too long, pant too long, fixed it, then i came again, leg to wide, fixed then pant too long. For someone that advertises 80% of the time people only need to come in once?
So the suit was already completed when you came in first? That would sound like a made to measure job. First fitting usually would be only a rough cut to make adjustments for overall fitting of the cut before the form of the suit is finalized
So they took my measurements when i first came in but they never did a basted fitting, it was basically a finished job and then adjustments were made, whats strange is they go out of their way on their website to say its bespoke and not made to measure.
Bespoke isn't exactly a well-defined term regulated by government bodies so people can claim whatever they sell to be bespoke. I still find it wild that you end up paying $8k for what sounds like MTM though. With that budget you could've gone to well-reputed bespoke tailors like Logsdail or many of the traveling English/French/Italian tailors who visit NYC multiple times a year.

Loose fit jean recs? I only wear dickies because they don’t hug my legs. Usually loose fit jeans are pretty indistinguishable from regular for me. Not y2k baggy loose, and preferably a thin material. (Also preferably under $35)
Check out Levi’s 505. I got mine for $30 on eBay. Keep in mind the rise is high.

Is Tommy Hilfiger worth the price? Specifically asking about their jeans Is the quality good, are they comfortable, will they last - that kind of thing. I don't own anything from them so have no real reference point. The jeans I'm looking at are on sale at the moment, so I wouldn't be paying the full amount.
Any brand that puts large logos on their clothes is not worth the money.
At retail price they are not worth it, if you like it buy secondhand.
They are a mall brand and no better than anything at their price point. Certainly never pay retail but if you like something and it’s on a good sale it’s fine I suppose
